    Colors of inspiration is a weird one!
    would do a split secondaries thing if I had that one, maybe adding cobalt blue violet, a blue green, a yellow orange, a red orange and a few deep colors like sepia, perylene green, maybe a gray or buff. Something sort of like the Qor high chroma set.

    Fyi. Fugitive Opera is an excellent color for underneath painting. Adding quin Rose or a red or Quin coral dropped in, even Scarlet Lake. Adds vibrancy & glow. Carbozole which I think is also known as Dioxizine purple mixed with colbalt & ultra marine or phalo blue makes a vibrant night sky for a snow scene, & splatter of white guache. I tried Kyanite thinking the sparkles would be perfect night sky, but it dries dull & looses that night sky enchantment even with white splatters, its just too heavy. Loved your take on DS specialty palettes & your reasons to challenge yourself.

    Yep they are great colors. I have them all and in their palettes. Love the colors. I use the nickel azo yellow to temper down my sap green. I was making my own sap green(phalogreen, quin gold, nickel azo yellow and ultramarine) but it is so nice to have it be done.Nickel azo yellow makes moody greens with Mayan dark. I do love to color mix. Great paint🤗

      Cards by Sharna, if you're talking about a blank box to build your new palette in, you can find them on Amazon (Meeden brand) very inexpensively. If you meant something else entirely, my bad! LOL

      Stacy Amazed by life thanks! Yes I somehow missed the blanks didn’t come with all the palettes so I was just hoping to get one of theirs. But I have more half pans than would fit in the empty spaces so I’m going to just get a bigger blank palette.

    Wow great video. Thank you so much. I'd love to get some of these but didn't know where to start and it was scary how expensive they were. I didn't know what colors would work for me to start, but these little sets of six seem great and not so expensive. I guess it's something that slowly builds over time. I've never used tube paints either. Always the ones in little pans from kids brands but want something with quality. I may get the blues since blues are my faves and the one you recommended for beginners. I like your big case too and have been looking into some of those.

      The granulation is indicated with a Y (yes) or N (no granulation). But the amount of granulation varies widely between pigments.

  • @Roslyngal
    @Roslyngal 5 лет назад +2

    Kinda makes me giggle that the Ultimate Mixing Set is sold in a palette that you can’t mix in 😝! Also that there’s no pigment/name details on side of the pans? That was tricky when they’re offering 6 blues in one set. Daniel Smith do make some seriously weird marketing decisions, but whoever develops their paints and sources those amazing primatek rocks can’t be faulted. Still number one for me.

    • @SandyAllnock1
      @SandyAllnock1  5 лет назад +1

      That IS a little weird; I think they didn't really expect us to USE these tiny palettes; when I talked with someone at the company they said they assumed we'd mix the pans in with our own, and they made inexpensive palettes so they could put the money in the process to make the half pans instead. :) Note on the colors - they're listed in order on the brochure tucked into the box. I marked mine with a pen in case I dumped it!

    Dang it. I knew I should have stayed with serpentine green! My son just went to the art store and bought me some paints. I was looking for colours that really work well for realistic foliage. I got undersea green and deep sap instead. It’s so hard to tell from the swatches and descriptions.

    • @Rebeccacell
      @Rebeccacell 5 лет назад

      But I’ll get them next time. This was great information!!

    • @everartokelli
      @everartokelli 5 лет назад +1

      Undersea green is a wonderful color for realistic foliage--it's a little warm for some areas, but adding a bit of blue or the deep sap green will make it very versatile, it's one of my favorite landscape colors. Add a lot of water and it separates into greens, blues and browns--less water and it's a great underbrush/grasses color and for adding dry brush over a colorful wash of florals. And the deep sap green is a lovely blue green for shadows and conifers. I've also been thinking of buying Serpentine (which is available in a affordable stick which works well cut off in a half pan) or Green Apatite to add to my landscape palette, but I think you'll love the colors you have.

    I know this was 2 years ago, but I just saw it now. Great video. One question. I've heard that moonglow is fugitive. Is this true?

    Sandy when painting with watercolor do you use the rough side of the watercolour paper? What thickness do you prefer? Thanks

      I use the rougher side. And 140lb. 👍🏻

    Do the watercolors move like this in your Bible journal? I know watercolor paper makes a big difference.

      The techniques need to be differeyon bible paper...but they do work nicely. See my Bible Journaling channel for lots of examples. 😍

    Do you worry about lightfastness? Do you sell your original art or just prints?

      I don’t stress too much but I typically choose ratings of I or II.

    Hi Sandy. This is a very helpful video. I am wondering if I buy the tube paints and add to a palette, will they dry out? Can they still be activated if they do?

    This is a wonderful video. Thank you. I wonder if you know of an alternative for Moonglow? Perhaps in Schimcke?

      Nothing I’ve seen does what moonglow does, sorry.

    Great video hoping to give watercolors more love this year. I'm curious as to why you called opera pink a fugitive color. It looks like from your color swatch like it would be beautiful for flowers. I have the original 6 started set as well as the 6 primitek set. Must add pink, purple, sap green and a few browns and grays. Hope you had a fantastic blessed Christmas.

      Fugitive means it will disappear if it's left out in the light.

      Opera pink turns a kind of dull flesh/tan colour in my tests (pretty consistent with others I’ve seen too). Some fugitive colours just fade significantly, some actually change to another colour (and change any area of your painting where you used them in a mix). It’s especially noticeable with Opera pink (and Aureolin yellow), because folks intend them as very strong bright colours (kinda neon!) but it can change to brownish in as little as 6 months in a sunlit area. Ok if you’re just splashing paints for fun, or working in a closed sketchbook or to photograph digitally (before it fades). Not ok if you intend to keep your work long-term, gift it for display or sell it. Hope that’s helpful?

    Can you use rubbing alcohol in place of water to use on polymer clay, and other different medias???
