    This set is amazing ,the greens are wonderful for landscape painting. You can achieve the depth of colour for trees and still retain the translucency in the wash

    You did such a bueatiful job showing these paints,I got so excited I up and ordered them. Yesterday I swore off such indulgences, but today, oh today is a new day and the possibilities just holler so loud. Thanks, you did a great job in covering all aspects of each color and I completely enjoye the entire video, begining to end. 😊❤

    I love both Daniel Smith paints and Schmincke, but I will say that I lean toward the DS more. What I will say is that while this is a fantastic set and it's about time that DS got off the pot and put out a quality pan product. Their first set was so awful - especially that plastic "tin" - that it really turned me off. Thank you for such a thorough tour of this set and love the treatment on the sword in the painting. I hope all is well on your end, my friend! Cheers!

      @@EveBolt Exactly! I don't know what they were thinking with that first set they put out. It was terrible and it cost $75 USD when they released it, but now only $65 which, imho, is still way too much. Anyhow, thank you again and looking forward to what's next! :)

    I am beginning to paint for the first time in my adult life at the age of 52. I just ordered this set yesterday and it should arrive tomorrow. I am very excited. I have some student-grade paints like Van
    Gogh, a few pans of Winsor & Newton and two tubes of Rembrandt. I haven't yet tried Daniel Smith but they have a masive palette of colors to choose from and I love the idea this comes with an extra pan of empty half-godets. I will really enjoy exploring and growing with all of these.

    Thanks for this in-depth review! I'm also glad for the release of a metal tin set from DS. That piece you created with them looks fantastic! I think I'd be more likely to go for the set of 12 so I could fill those empty pans myself since I like a selection of purples and violets.

    Thank you for this review. This is a good all around, versatile mixing set, skewed toward landscape painting, in my opinion. Though, I would like a violet. It’s not “unbalanced,” necessarily, like some people are saying; it’s just not full of the designer colors. It’s an excellent set if you really want to learn to mix.

    i really like the looks of the sets. One can always mix a nice dark almost black neutral with burnt sienna and ultramarine, so if I were to buy this I wouldn't really mind. I also never use straight up white watercolor in my paintings, I go over with white ink or gouache. I'm happy they included Buff Titanium, though. It can be a really useful color. I'm also really glad for the addition of a turquoise! It looks so lovely in that range. If I didn't have my mind set on the VanGogh paints, I'd buy one of these sets instead. But for me right now, VanGogh is definitely more affordable and less ouch to the pocketbook. I think for the colors to shine through, it'd be neat to see a video showing mixes one can make with the set on its own too.

    • @EveBolt
      @EveBolt  4 года назад +3

      I'll keep the mixing video idea in mind, thank you! And it can be a very distant goal, I don't think they will retire this set :)

      Don't be fooled (and waste money) by marketing. Having used both extensively, I can tell you that van Gogh is not only vfm but that you won't notice a difference between then and d.smith. if you want something better (and this will be marginally better), go with schmincke, w&n, new rembrandt, sennelier, maimeri blu, m. Graham. American journey and Holbein, I would say, also of the exact same quality as van Gogh, so with their pricing I would not suggest them, unless it's easier for you to get them.

    I quite like the set. A bit heavy on the yellows for my taste, and on my display it looks like the yellows are not very varied - some of them are very similar to each other and I'd rather have had a violet or purple. But the color selection seems good overall, and I love that it has a good CMYK triad!
    I like the matte black tin, it looks quite sleek. I do have Opinions on palette layout, but it's a pretty standard tin so I can't complaint too much. I wouldn't want to get an extra one since I already have a bunch of tins. I don't need to have two identical ones, but I can see how it could be useful for people who don't already have more than they need 😅
    Re: paper: could it be a sizing issue? I know the sizing can degrade over time, and that seems to often be the culprit when paper has unexpected mystery problems. Maybe you can start reviewing mediums and stuff next 😉 I know Holbein has a "multi sizing liquid".

    It's good to see a set of 24. The colour choices are really nice. Lots of varied greens. Personally I wouldn't go out of my way to buy DS. I base my experience on one tube and a dot card of 18. I can't say anything bad about DS, they're nice paints but they're not for me. That said, I do like the selection in this set and suited to your lovely illustration. Enjoy them 🙂.

    Nice review and at first glance a great set. But there comes a time when you've had it with sets; You've got your colors already be it from the brand itself (and if you're not a nerd or a hunter-gatherer of watercolors) or from many other brands. At that moment you become picky and I guess I wouldn't buy this set, especially not for that money, even not for the extra tin. It would double up with basic colors I already have and if I'm going to buy DS it will be other colors. I must say, I like that they put the perylene green in it and the cobalt turquoise.

  • @jaqubp

    Thanks for the video, Eve! I've been eyeing these new metal tin sets, because I've never tried Daniel Smith before. I'm baffled by the 12-pan set, as it has as many as three yellows (hansa yellow light, medium and deep). Even the 24-pan set skips on hansa yellow medium. The 24-pan set seems well-rounded, but I still can't shake off the feeling that by paying just a little bit more I could buy individual 5ml tubes and have a set full pans. Perhaps the 'Inspirations' set would be a better choice for someone who wants to give DS a try? I already have so much paint and at least the 'Inspirations' set offers non-obvious colors, unique to DS :-)

    I really like this set. The colors are very versatile. I find myself reaching for it often even though I have other watercolor palettes. I would prefer another non granulating blue instead of so many neutrals, but otherwise it’s great. I wanted to try the 15 ultimate mixing set but the palette was horrible so when this came out I was really excited. They are also selling pan colors in open stock but they are super expensive so I plan to refill with tubes. Hope they come up with more sets.

      Hard to compare, as I've shuffled around the colors in the Schmincke set to remove some I didn't use XD I would maybe reshuffle a few colors in the DS set too, making it on the same level as the Schmincke one :)

    i think the paper issue might have happend because those sheets absorbed too much moisture in some way. if the air is too humid it can transfer over to your expensive WC paper and making it as good as unusable over time ): happened to me too as my workroom is very close to our bathroom and all the wet air that escaped after showers damaged my precious stock of Arches paper..

    This is my all time favorite demo painting of yours! Love it!!! I can't find this set of Daniel Smith paints ANYWHERE! Not that I need it, but I love the tins and Jane Blundell color selections (I have all of the colors in this palette.) I was thinking of putting all 86 of my Daniel Smith colors in 4 24 full pan palettes (and a separate Primatek palete- or does it make sense to put them in color order?) because I was thinking it would be kinder to my brushes. Do you think it is necessary? I love the size of the Mijello paint wells, but I live the ability to move my paint around and it is not easilly done to add a yellow in the group when they are all poured, and of course I want them in order! Lol!

  • @poibeans8341

    After releasing the flawed plastic palettes it was about time for a decent metal set, imho. I do like the color selection mostly, it provides a wide and vibrant mixing range and covers the "basics". (I also have a very soft spot for Hansa Yellow Deep with its PY65... its one of my favourite yellows! And Perylene Green.)
    I am not exactly happy with the choice of browns here, could have easily replace at least one with a nice, vibrant violet. Since I have already build my own palette to my liking with their tubes, I wouldn't buy it. But if friends are interested in purchasing, I'd definitely would hint that out as well as their little tube sets.

    You might want to also check out In Liquid Color. Denise's review compares this to the set she has with Davinci for wildlife painting, and this is really close to it. It isn't as environmentally friendly as the Davinci set, but I doubt that was their goal for the Daniel Smith set.
    One can mix several nice purple tones so I'm good with not wasting a slot on it, especially if it was built to compete with the other palette, which wouldn't surprise me. The set for Davinci went well, so why wouldn't Daniel Smith want to get a piece of the action in what seems to be a popular arrangement.
    And don't get me wrong, I love the colors here and Daniel Smith paints. This set calls my name. I just can't see the palettes being this close without some inspiration from the other even if it wasn't completely intentional.

    • @EveBolt
      @EveBolt  4 года назад +8

      We'll have to disagree on this, hehe! DS' set has almost all the colors (or similar ones) to color selections put together by Jane Blundell. I really don't believe that DS took inspiration elsewhere (Jane Blundell being one of their recurrent collaborators).

    • @DrPhilologist
      @DrPhilologist 4 года назад +8

      @@EveBolt Yeap, this is a clear outcome of the collaboration between J. Blundell and D. Smith. People have been "taking inspiration" from her blog for years, and then randomly forget where their original 12, 15 and 24 colours came from or how they sought alternatives to mirror that original palette but maybe in a new direction. And I say this without even liking D. Smith products in the slightest.

    • @everartokelli
      @everartokelli 4 года назад +5

      I'm not surprised that many saw a similarity with Denise's palette, but I agree that this was very much a landscape palette based on Jane Blundell's work. I love earth yellows, but do think the palette overdid it there and I would have liked to see a granulating violet like Ultramarine Violet or Moonglow because they are very useful in a landscape palette for mountains and skies. But it's so easy to swap colors in a metal palette, it's not a deal breaker. I hope DS sells the empty palettes for those of us with DS watercolor tube "collections" :)

    • @DrPhilologist
      @DrPhilologist 4 года назад +8

      @@everartokelli Minor correction: not Blundell's work but her extended palette posted on the internet for close to a decade. Which is a very overt inspiration behind Soden's palette, as she used to admit in her earlier videos. Then she removed Jane's grey for Denise's green and one nickel pigment for a go-green yellow and suddenly originality and intellectual property theft were invented. And I repeat, I consider D. Smith (the new, corporal D. Smith, not what it used to be when it was a small, honest, family-run company) the most overrated art-related company out there. All they charge for is advertisement and their shady transactions with artists-retailers.
