    100$ is the price in Europe, please shop around for the best deal in your area :)
    UPDATE- after filming this video I played and painted with this set, and as expected, the paints perform beautifully. The color choice is lovely, very versatile indeed, and I love the addition of Buff Titanium instead of white which many basic sets have... However, I still think the prices is steep and would rather buy tube paints and make my own half pan palette.

    I agree, the first thing I thought when I started painting with this set was woah thats a lot of browns... followed by a confused look about the grey since it was so easy to mix with two of the other colors in this set. I instantly wished for something like Cobalt Turquoise, though honestly I would have been happy if there were more unique colors better representing what I love about Daniel Smith (like granulating minerals, purpurite, even lunar black would have been so fun to mix with). When I sat down and started number crunching for my review I realized the other problem with the price tag on this set, is that all the colors are some of the cheapest colors you can buy from them. No hidden gems in this set, like Sleeping Beauty Turquoise was in the Blues set.

      Lol you read my mind. I have some more thoughts on these sets coming in a video tomorrow. Sleeping beauty for the win ;) I completely agree!

      Kimberly, totally agree, its like DS trying to get rid of colors that are not their best sellers & make the most profit in a hurry. I also think QaR came out with their well thought out small palette & DS jumped in the bandwagon thinking their reputation would carry them. I think they would have done better to price point it lower like a loss leader, because you'll love the paints and go back for the tubes, but not so much if buyers remorse taste remains in your mouth using a cheap box to paint, its not going to be a very good experience whenever you take out your box. I hope honest reviews like this get to Daniel Smith. I think they are responsive to their artist community. I will have to visit the artist they have used to compile the pallette & see how they reviewed the product & how their followers commented. Going to Jane' s Blundell site next.

    • @KimberlyCrick
      @KimberlyCrick 5 лет назад +1

      Other than the case itself, I would assume Jane Blundell is pretty happy with the color selection, because it was her choices @@denaheck1506 . Though I know what you mean, it's like they wanted to make max profit by using the cheapest colors. Sadly I don't think it translated well to a set of this price tag. For her followers I think they were expecting these colors, since she blogs about using them for her favorite mixing charts... But it doesn't mean it is a good fit for every artist. If Daniel Smith planned to make this price of a set, the case seems like even more of the failure, in addition to no one adding any more unique colors to Jane's selection, and maybe veto that convenience gray. In my review video for this set I fixed the lid with a glue-grid to create extra mixing space, but I really should not have had to do that. I'd be interested in hearing what you find about her follower comments!

    the sets are less expensive here in the US. However it is distressing that the palette is such a poor plastic as opposed to the nice metal tins out there for other artist sets. Also other reviewers have shown close ups of pans that dip so low in the middles that they contain much less paint in them than other half pans. It looks as though they did not give them the third pour. I was excited anticipating the ultimate set but after seeing these reviews I will continue to assemble my own travel palettes using tubes and Meeden tins.

    Blick has the 6 Half pan sets are $33. I bought the sketchers set, which was fine, I did have a few of the colors. Turns out I did not like the palette. The lid does not lay flat and as with most new plastic surfaces, it beads up. I used an eraser to try and help the beading. I returned the set.

    Doing straight color swatches sort of misses the point of the set. The idea is that you can mix just about any color you want from just these 15 colors. That's why Pthalo Blue and Pthalo Green are included - they're a bit much on their own, but they are wonderful for mixing. Still, it is awfully pricey.

    • @iritlandgraf
      @iritlandgraf  5 лет назад +5

      Lol it is called ultimate mixing set, so that's obviously the goal here... I might include a future video showing some of the mixing options, but this one would have been way too long if I added that in too. Of course you are right about the phthalos, and yet I still hardly ever use them, just my personal preference :)

    • @KimberlyCrick
      @KimberlyCrick 5 лет назад +1

      In a painting I tried to force myself to use phthalos @@iritlandgraf +Duck Pond ... Still couldn't get myself to reach for that green though, because Phthalo blue made such awesome mixes with the hansa yellow and quin gold for greens. With such an overpowering pigment, all I had to do was barely touch phthalo blue to my yellows to turn into a shade of green. I wasn't overly fond of the mixes I came up with using the phthalo green instead. That said, neither are really a gem, as you can find phthalos even in the most cheap of watercolor sets.

    That was some really nice swatching. The fact that you slipped some burnt sienna onto the ultramarine was a nice touch. I see so many videos do perfectly organized swatch sheets, but my impatient brain stares at how close some colors are to each other on a swatch page as if I could modify the video through telekinesis and make them touch.
    I like white palette boxes. they don't lay down flat enough, but they're more lightweight than the metal ones. I'm on the fence with the DS ones because I love that they hold more than twelve colors but there's no space in it for a pocket/collapsible brush. I might cave in and get the Colors of Inspiration one day because I want the colors.
    About a year ago, Amazon had a combo pack of six 5ml Daniel Smith Essentials tubes and six Primatek tubes for about $70 USD. If you look at the listing as of this comment, it blew up to $114, but you can still buy the essentials set and primatek sets individually for $30 USD each. Those tubes fill up a half pan at least twice. Then I did this silly thing where I bought the Watercolor Brush Cotman box set, tossed all the Cotman half-pans into an Altoids tin, and put my Daniel Smith paints from the above mentioned sets into the box and that became my main travel kit. That box set was $15, but an empty tin case with half pans is $10 and you get a really nice waterbrush with it. That setup was about $75 for a complete travel DS starter kit. $30 less if you don't care for primateks or want to buy them later.

    Blick online store is currently selling the 18 pan/two palette set in the US for $74.50USD and the 6 pan sets for $33USD. Of course the price can be higher in retail shops. This is comparable or lower than most other artist watercolors. Qor 12 pan set is $60 (18 pans could be $90), Da Vinci 18 pan set is $79 (6 full pans/12 half pans though, so a good deal), Schmincke 8 pan set is $106, Sennelier 18 pan set is $75.61 (on sale). These prices are not comprehensive or exact for all areas, but just for general comparison and perspective.

    I could see this being worth it if it was filled with the DS primatek paints... often it is expensive to get a lot of variety of the primatek in full tubes and a set like this with just those would be AMAZING. A few months ago I put together a Jane Blundell palette 🎨 of 18 colors, based on her 20 color palette. I substituted some brands I already had for some of the Daniel Smith colors. I substituted French Gray for Buff Titanium, because I already had it. The only reason I was excited about this was to see if my mix of Janes Gray was correct, and it looks pretty darn good! I thought the set was very expensive, especially when I owned everything but Buff Titanium and the real Janes Gray. I have my set in a Mijello 18 color palette that I purchased from Amazon. I am super happy with my palette based on her color choices, vs buying this set for $79 US.

    • @iritlandgraf

      Absolutely, if you have most of the colors already you're way better off to set up your own palette, especially considering the palette here is defected in my opinion.

    • @iritlandgraf
      @iritlandgraf  5 лет назад

      Some companies have a different formula for their tube paints and pan paints and some have the same. Paint from tube is fresh and juicy and one can use large amounts with ease or in a very intense application. When it dries, it can be rewet and used the same way as pan paint. Some artists prefer fresh paint and some prefer to rewet dried paint. Tubes are more economical than pans so if you paint often they are the most cost effective option. I think Daniel Smith pans are the same formula as their tubes. Hope that helps!

    The blues would be a nice set to get because it has both the Sleeping Beauty Turquoise and Sodalite Genuine. Both are expensive, not available in 5ml tubes and the turquoise at least, is one of the controversial pigments (not necessarily made all of turquoise). Still, both are interesting and buying just half pans of them would satisfy curiosity, especially if purchased someplace that offers discounts. But ripoff is definitely a good description.

    I totally agree, they are overpriced! And... some of the sets are weird in the way they are composed... because IF I were to spend 50€ on one of the small sets, I will pretty definitely already be into watercolor, and I will have some of the basics, like I definitely have an artist grade Ultramarine, and an burnt sienna etc. If I am already interested into the brand, infill probably have tried some of the special colors, like, I have the moonglow (And hate it).
    And, for comparison, Schmincke 5ml tubes here in Germany are around 4,20 to 8ish€, and if I do my math... let’s say I exclusively take series 3, I am at 36€ for my tubes, and I can get a metal tin for them around 10€ from Amazon...
    what i am trying to say; why should I get them? They are overpriced, I can get a the tubes that I want in tubes, probably even cheaper.

    Honestly I care for that JB mixing set but that's just my own preference, also the half of the pallet case for mixing is on a angle ,so what your mixing will just puddle near the hinge .I do like DS paints but these sets and pallet cases get a thumbs down , I'm sorry for being so blunt , there are many better sets that you shared in your gift guide! 🤗🌹🌸💐

    I’m baffled at how they can justify the cost of these tiny pallets. It makes the brand look greedy. I to will stick to the tubes. Love the review, really enjoyed it.

    For me, all pans sets are overpriced, tubes have just a much better money per ml ratio.
    And buying a simple palette does not cost much either.

    • @iritlandgraf
      @iritlandgraf  5 лет назад +1

      I mostly agree with 2 reservations. One is that many people, especially beginners find pans more user friendly and less intimidating. Also while tubes are more economical, they are still more expensive than pans, and many people who dabble in watercolors or have many colors don't go through paint as fast as more prolific painters. So even thought they are more expensive per ml, with say 50 dollars I could get 10 half pans or 4 tubes (just guesstimating to make my point, hope that makes sense). But yes, now that I paint daily, it doesn't make any sense for me to buy pans.

    Hi thanks for the review. I would have bought this set if I didn’t already have the tubes. So I’m not sure how well they will sell. I think they should do a set of all the primatek colours. I would definitely buy that. By the way will you be trying out the new Prima watercolour set in vintage pastels.

    Hm, I understand that set is overpriced. I'm in the US and they're much cheaper here at Jerry's Artarama. Then again, even with that I think it's so much cheaper to get the tubes and fill your own pans.

    • @iritlandgraf
      @iritlandgraf  5 лет назад +1

      Hi Kori! Yes this set is cheaper in the US compared to Europe. I actually don't think it would be cheaper to buy 15 tubes of DS paint, but definitely more economical. If only the palette was usable I think it would be a good overall investment but as it is... Nope 😉

  • @terrybanet3330

    Watching this but small sets are $33.36 and large ultimate at $74.79 at Blick. I managed to find them cheaper with a coupon but the prices I quote have been stable on their site for weeks. .So, still not super cheap but significantly cheaper than on your video.

    • @iritlandgraf
      @iritlandgraf  5 лет назад

      Of course one should always shop around and look for good deals. These sets are marked as 35% off at Dick Blick with the prices you mentioned, so definitely a lower price than other places, and not their listed price (it's actually 114$ on Dick Blick for the large set). Being in Europe we don't get such deals on most American brands, definitely not on DS paints, and I was stating what seems to be more or less the regular full price.

      THEMAYQUEEN1 yes, mint tins or pencil tins. Paint the inside with enamel paint to prevent rust and the top can be used for mixing without beading. It works great and is light weight.

    I'm putting together a DS set of 12 as my foray into this brand, the essential's set supplemented with, Sap Green, Pthalo Green (BS), Yellow Ochre, Burnt Sienna, Moonglow and Ultramarine Violet. That total ends up being about 86 USD, where as the ultimate mixing set is 115 USD at the cheapest I could find :/
    However I find myself *really* wishing I could buy the Winsor and Newton Cotman pocket set pallet separate. Just the pallet. I *adore* that pallet. The paint not so much but the pallet is so perfectly sized! I do wish it fit standard half pans though :/

    A bitter pill to swallow, yes. If you want DS, get the essential set and add burnt sienna or quin burnt orange, and thalo green blue shade.

    • @iritlandgraf
      @iritlandgraf  5 лет назад

      Absolutely. It is worth to mention that some of their half pans set are better value. The blue one for example. To get all those colors would cost a lot, and even though it's def less economical, the little set will cost less (more per ml of paint, of course) and let you play with all those pretty colors.

    I agree that they are overpriced !! I’ve also had negative experience with their customer service , which leads me to think their “ ego” has grown quite large ... hence, they probably feel they can charge what they want .. oh well :-/

    • @mydogeatspuke
      @mydogeatspuke 3 года назад

      This comment aged quite well. They really ramped up the ego in recent months, now even seemingly trying to manipulate the market on top of lying about contents and lightfastness, and the shoddy quality control that still hasn't been addressed. Very strange that they're such a popular company, especially when they charge so much for such easily replicated mixes.

    Oh Irit, DS should put you as one of the "flagship" artists on their page and have your 18 color limited palette dot cards as an color choise option :D
    I think you have there a nice point, I was really disappointed with prising what it comes to these poured half pan sets. And plastic palettes with gold embossed logo? Where is the functionality of artist quality product? Or is it meant for a students and starting artists, is this a promotion product? Then drop the price to 25% (they are giving less than 5ml tube of each pigment in it)! I have almost all colours in 15 ml tubes from Daniel Smith. Some o my favourites I have in pacs of three in storage just in case I run out one day, and if anyone ask me DS is my number one choose for aquarelle. But this pan sets are making me cry, It like a Series V pigments. They are robbing people :D Oh Irit, thank you for nice review and Sorry for this cry, but I feel same like Porshe could start produce new car models with tyres and engine from a Lada...

Maybe because I buy them all :D.. @@iritlandgraf

    Fun video. Yucky Brown. Hahaha. True! Disappointed so many colors in the DS palette are semi-opaque. I found it funny you thought phalo blue to be too intense. I had to check out your artwork at that point thinking you work in landscapes or something! But to my Surprise your art is almost psychedelic. Wonderful bright & intense colors. Thought oh my? I use phalo colors sparingingly because of their staining qualities. For you in Not in US. Sieniliea & even Winsor Newton are expensive in the US & Daniel Smith are our lowest priced. I think Daniel Smith could have done better with their paint box too. Not very luxurious & no real mixing area. Plastic is not usually that great for mixing. For the price not very artistically designed. I just bought the QARs new box 12 colors like the Box better (they have small circle wells in the lid & the lid is enameled white). love the size great for travel, but EXPENSIVE. I'll make my own DS with a new little travel empty palette I found on Amazon. Thanks for the reviews on the other paints.

    • @iritlandgraf
      @iritlandgraf  5 лет назад

      Lol you have a point there, but lately I've been painting mostly with sediment based watercolors, so compared to that the phthalos are intense, and as you mention, staining. I'm very fickle ;)

    I have this set. I bought it for much cheaper her in the US. I think they are great but No way I would pay that much. I would rather buy a much bigger set for that price. I paid 55 for mine. The markup is ridiculous over there. I am so sorry. I hate the DS palette. I ended up buying a WN set that fits 24 but came with 12 pro pans so I can put all of them in there. I honestly use the WN more than the DS colors. I think they are super granulated, which I thought I would have liked, but I don't. I was very disappointed with the palette. It should have come in a better palette

    Shame on D.S. Buy a Meeden Metal palette, fill it with Da Vinci tube colors, and enjoy! I believe the reason they included 2 palettes, is because they knew beforehand, that their 3D printed like boxes are warped, don't open properly, hinges snap off in no time, and are garbage. They should have recalled that product, but I suppose their marketing people advised against it. They likely have 1000's of more to unload. Very disappointed. Total ripoff. Check out DaVinci. A family run company, that cares about artists. After finishing what I have of DS paint, will never buy another! Also, I have noticed, when I fill a pan from a tube, with DaVinci, 2 fills and you're good tho go. DS 4 fills, and it just keeps shrinking and shrinking. To the point where they fall out of the pan!
