  • Review of Daniel Smith Watercolors & Demo (Chinese Lanterns)
    Today I am reviewing the Watercolor Essentails Set from Daniel Smith. The colors included are:
    Hansa Yellow Light (col yellow)
    New Gamboge (Warm Yellow)
    Quinacridone Rose (Cool Red)
    Pyrrol Scarlet (Warm REd)
    Pthalo Blue GS (Cool "greeny" blue)
    French Ultramarine (Warm "purply" blue)
    Here is my basic split primary color mixing video: • Color Wheel: How to mi...
    If you want a more in depth course try the class Luminous Watercolor Mixing: www.craftsy.com...
    You can find a good deal on Daniel Smith tubes on Blitsy: shrsl.com/?~dauf
    They also have the set I used at Simon Says Stamp: shrsl.com/?~daug
    (but honestly, you can get the 6 tube set for half the price on Amazon) amzn.to/3O47SfQ
    I really like these paints and this set is perfect for clean bright mixes, perfect workhorse colors to start off with. The only negative I can think of on Daniel Smith paints is they are expensive but luckily they often have sales so you can keep a list and stock up when you find a deal. I alos love the discriptions they put of each color on their website, although warning, you might get talked into buying:) www.danielsmith...
    This 6 color set is wonderful for beginners or experienced artists wanting to try and compare with basic colors. I'll say that the quality is excellent so advanced painters might want to try some of their more exotic pigments to round out their collections especially if you seek granulating colors.

    I don't think I have ever watched any of your videos that were these old. It's encouraging to see the basics of your channel even back then! I'm so glad you have remained true to yourself. Thanks Lindsay.

    I just want to say thank you for being REAL with us. You're not an "art snob" like some of the others I see on here and I truly look forward to all of your videos no matter what medium you're using. I like the longer videos to listen to while I crochet. :3 Thanks to your yarn dyeing video, I can make whatever colors I want and don't worry about discontinued colors or horribly knotted store buys. Keep up the great work!

    Great demo! I love the way you did the chart. Some others I have seen are so pickily done that I, as an inexperienced painter, feel intimidated. But you give me permission to be imperfect and just have fun and learn. Thanks, Lindsay!

    I purchased these and the other set so I have more colors. I am on vacation and I am painting a picture with them as we speak. This is the first set of watercolors that I purchased that were more than 12 dollars, LOL!! I love the colors and will send you a picture when I am done. I am only on the first layer. I am taking my time. I did the background and a couple of the flowers painted. I won't be working on the detail probably when I get home. I a m very nervous about the detail part, that is usually when I mess up, LOL!! Thanks for reviewing these, I always love your opinion on crafty things!!

    I bought this kit after watching this video. It has been six months and I have finally used them. I am so happy with them. This video is awesome thank you so much for introducing me to Daniel Smith and M Graham paints. I just started a six week course with a local artist and I am so excited. My 3 only completed paintings are all from your tutorials orchids, dahlia and a landscape. I love your channel.

    I love all of these paintings, especially the wiggly leaves on the lanterns :)Thank you for the reviews, I have not only been inspired, but I use the information I get here to make an informed decision on where to spend my money. Posting products to Australia is very expensive, as it is to buy them here if they are available. So knowing all the pros and cons is very important to me. Most of my watercolours, pastels, watercolour crayons and most of my pencils and even my markers are based on your recommendations. I have been absolutely delighted with every purchase.

    I love this essentials kit! It's fabulous. I've been using it myself and gifting it to my WC friends for a number of years now. I used to get it for around $35 on Amazon and other places like Blick and Jerry's. Alas, it's gotten more expensive now, but is still so worthwhile. These are the perfect combo of a warm and cool of each of the primaries. You can make almost any color from them. I adore them. When I want to limit the number of paints I carry for whatever reason, these colors are perfect, especially in the small six color sized painters palettes available online. . Daniel Smith paints are a superb quality paint and a small amount actually goes a long way. So nice to see this video. Good color chart ! Thanks for this video! I love your enthusiasm!

I am on a budget and am still using a student pan set! I actually enjoy mixing my own acrylics and so on. I'm a mixed media artist.

    Lindsay, Get some of the Daniel Smith sticks! The colors are beautifully vibrant and I love the Primatek colors in the sticks like Serpentine Genuine , Sodalite Genuine, and Hematite. Also, I want to mention how versatile the sticks are! You can draw with them dry or wet and get beautiful texture. You can also treat it more like a pan and brush the color off with your watercolor brush and get a much smoother look. I personally love to draw with them wet and dry and I love doing en plein air painting with them because they're very portable. if you do get several of them, I would recommend getting the little plastic stick containers that Daniel Smith offers to keep them clean and separate from each other.
    I am fortunate that I live within an hours drive from Daniel Smith store and factory in South Seattle, WA and at the store you can get them for $8.50 each. I find that if you go through the Daniel Smith website, they tend to sell for less than the list price with most being under $10. Amazon and some other websites tend to sell them for list prices.
    Finally I want to mention that when I was at Daniel Smith last, they informed me that the pigment that goes into the sticks is exactly the same as what goes into the tubes. The sticks are just the pigments and gum Arabic and when processing the paint in the factory, right before they add liquid for the tube paints, they take some of the mixture away and bake it for 1-3 days and thats how the sticks are made.

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  8 лет назад

      +Annie Tracey it sounds like they are a better value. I think I will try some next. Does the surpentine granulate when painted from the stick as the paint will from the tube?

      @anniefitzgerald4447 8 лет назад

      +thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich
      It absolutely does granulate! I only wish that they had more of the Primatek colors in stick form.

    I love Daniel Smith, a fun less expensive way to obtain the larger tubes of DS water color is to order the Triad sets from their website. They use 3 colors to paint an entire picture. The set is usually around 50% off regular price of paint. I ordered one set a month and I think it was around 20 bucks and included free shipping... that was a few years ago. it's a great way to learn color theory as well and the sets make great gifts!!!!

    I am so excited to be building a DS palette. I am starting with these and the Primatek sets. I have a 40 half pan tin for them, and I will collect over time. Very fun, and a way to TREAT myself to a new color once a month. I will be doing pigment studies to help me select colors. I want to use many of them as mixing colors to add granulation to my use up my very good quality student paints, and my 36 White Nights that I have had for only 2 weeks. I enjoy the palette, but I do not get a sense from some of the shades that they are top quality. Learning that no brand makes the perfect everything!

    I have just a few of the Daniel Smith colors. I don't know if they still offer the "Triads", but I used to buy them whenever they had a special that I could afford. They would demo a picture that could be done with only three colors then sell those three colors in a bundle. I think most of the colors they sold that way were mixed colors though, not single pigments, but they were beautiful colors. It seems to me the colors are so intense that I can use less paint to get the same intensity of color.

    Great video Lindsay! I got this set about 5 months ago...it is pretty nifty. 😉 I would suggest the D.S. primatek set of 6 to try. I love their primateks and I think you would find they would go great with a lot of what you do. 😆

      +Viv Randles They are just a group of paints made by Daniel Smith. These particular ones are made from precious stones/rocks. www.amazon.com/Daniel-Smith-285610006-Introductory-Watercolor/dp/B00WT5VK62/ref=redir_mobile_desktop?ie=UTF8&dpID=51iztQik%2BnL&dpPl=1&keywords=primatek%20watercolor%20set&pi=SY200_QL40&qid=1469578046&ref=plSrch&ref_=mp_s_a_1_1&sr=8-1

    Very helpful review! I love New Gamboge because it is like painting with sunshine, or at least the old single pigment formulation of PY 153 is. Just as you do, I prefer single pigment paints. When Winsor Newton could no longer get PY 153, I switched to Daniel Smith. Then when artists on WetCanvas began lamenting about Daniel Smith's supply of PY 153 running out, I sort of panicked with the rest of them. I had a 15 ml tube and a half, but I put DS New Gamboge on my Christmas wish list, telling my daughter about it soon running out, thinking I could always use another tube. Well......I guess she loves her Mama because under the tree was a box of 5 15ml tubes! Since I still have not used up my original supply, I guess I will be painting with "sunshine" until my dying day and still not run out! LOL. BTW, the new formulation of PY97 PY110 is not really a true replacement so I am glad I have my lifetime supply.

    Hi Lindsay, Just did a cost comparison for a set of 15 ml split primary colors (6 tubes each) from Cheap Joe's : Daniel Smith $68.48 and M Graham $56.79 so you can try the Daniel Smith without guilt! They have fabulous granulation and there are extensive mixing
    charts on Jane Blundell's blog showing her basic 15 colors to make any color you would ever dream of, and then some! I got her ebook of charts for $17 - can always have with me on my computer or tablet!

    Lindsay I purchased the dot cards, 5 of them for 28.00. I was very disappointed. Several of them didn't activate from the cards. Several had very little paint and was so light for a swatch. I sent an email to the company and never heard anything back. I love the colors but didn't order any more tubes.

      +jillmayo huh, the back to me within 2 days of my email. I sent a photo of the duplicate tube so they know I really bought it and got 2 of one and not the other. Maybe snap a pic of the problem card and send it. They were really good about it.

Did your explode out the top as soon as you opened them I had that issue and was not prepared for the extra paint? They are gorgeous will order the dot card to see the colors I really want. Thanks for the education on mixing them. Will have to watch your yarn dyeing thx N4ncy for mentioning

    After watching your videos for over a year I am inspired to get into art especially watercolor. What is a good beginning set? I literally have no art supplies aside from the average school supplies. But as a teen on a budget I really need something that's inexpensive. Would you recommend the Royal & Langnickel kit????

    • @thefrugalcrafter

      +SimplyTina I would recommend the Lukas studio set, it is $12 and the paints won't fade. Jerry's artarsma sells it. Or the Cotman sketcher box, if you are in the us you can use a coupon on that at Michaels or acmoore or it is $14 on amazon.

    Hi Lindsay! I know how much you love your M. Graham watercolours. I want to invest in some artist quality watercolours, and I'm torn between Daniel Smith's & M.Graham; with some people saying that the M.Graham's aren't suitable for travelling pallets & plein air because they have a tendency to a) attract bees?! And b) drip out of palette because they never really dry. Has this ever been a problem for you?
    Thanks so much 🌷

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  6 лет назад +1

      +J3nny haha no, never been a problem but is humid environments they take a long time to dry so you might want Daniel smith. You can't go wrong with either.

    Awesome review, thanks Lindsay! Would you say these are nicer than the Mijello paints? I already have the Mijello set but I've been wanting to try these out, that granulation looks to die for.

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  8 лет назад

      +Jess Elena not nicer but many are more granular. Try a tube of French ultramarine or another color that granulates that is unlike what you have. Their website had good swatches to see. Use them together;)

    I would love to see a review of the DS watercolor sticks. The 15 mil Tubes of Piemonite and Serprntine, in the PrimaTek line, can't be found for less than $16.74 a pop! Having used them I can say that they are truly unique, but I'd much rather spend $8.99 on a stick version providing they wet out well and granulate like their tube counterparts. The prices are from Blick and Jerry's BTW and they even have the superpower of being impenetrable from coupon/promotional code under any circumstances. HA!
    Anyhoo, dollar for dollar M Graham gets the gold for being the highest pigment load for the money, but they keep their color selection to a reasonably low count. That said I use a lot of M Graham paint, but the Daniel Smith PimaTek color formulations are novel and unmatched as far as texture and granulation.
    It's a wild world of watercolor out there and I would love to see some PrimaTek sticks in action. Thanx for all the info you provide.

      +thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich I linked it and prices on the description of the Cotman Set II video - the UK price should be £65 ($80?) but discounted at the moment to £25 ($35?), which makes the $48 US price seem better! The 12 colour set is discounted at every vendor worldwide at the moment so I expect that is being changed or discontinued maybe.

    This was oh so helpful since I'm thinking about doing the Bluprint Startup class, which is probably the one you referred to in your video. You never said anything about transparency. The tomato color is less transparent than the color suggested for class, so hopefully it will mix okay. I thought granulation was a bad thing (never knew first-hand), so I'm glad you explained that it is really fun! Now I have to decide if I want this one or the less granular Windsor Newton that Bluprint is selling. Oh, decisions, but this is definitely a good first watercolor set. I'll likely get it, but put the colors in pans. You are such a wealth, Lindsay and it's hard to even consider what I'd do without your advice archive. Thank you again. Off to see if you have an affiliate link to it.
