Finally I find someone explains how to make this chart I see everyone doing and no explaining how to make. 😭♥️ I'm looking forward to buy this set and this video helped me a lot 👏👏👏
Thank You Thank You ...and Thank You !!! I've learned more about color and the rewards of mixing primary colors up by yourself than the hours upon hours I have spent watching people with dozens of "pre-mixed" paints. When You mixed the colors together I really got to see what make(s) the color. The individual colors "become" another color, instead of being a seemingly original color on its own. Don't get me wrong; I know that every color is a calculated mixture, but the understanding of how it was transformed is lost when You're only seeing the end results. Again, Thank You. This was a Great Instructional Video.
I just bought this set and its my first tubes ever and I finally invested in a few good quality brushes! slowly but surely building my collection but because of videos like this I am not rushing to buy every tube and learn to work with what I have!! so excited though great video too I subbed
Awesome Video - I found how you mapped out and showed the two color (warm & cool) wheels super helpful. And the masking fluid idea - dare I say genius! I've learned a lot, Thanks so much!
I just bought this set. I have made my chart and tomorrow I'm actually doing my swatches. I just love this set. I know this is an older video but it still got me excited for making my mixing chart! Thanks.
I just purchased this set along with Quin. Gold from Daniel Smith and I'm soo excited. I hesitated at first because I knew I was going to become addicted and its pricey but I figured what the heck. :) the essentials can be mixed and create some gorgeous colors and I just had to get Quin gold because it's such a beautiful color. I'll be making my chart when my DS come so this was a great video to watch. Take care Sandy!
AWESOME video! I've been wanting to invest in good watercolors, and debated between M Graham and these. This really helped me decide and I am also going to make a color chart for the first time ever. Thanks Sandy!
Great video, Sandy! Thanks for clearing up my confusion on the blues, since I was sure you had gotten them reversed. Then I read the note in the description--aha! :)
I'm lucky I was researching split-primary color theory before I got these so I knew the Phthalo Blue (GS) [green shade] was the cool version. Though I'm planning to do charts of the cool vs. warm primaries, I'll also do some mixed charts to see how they neutralize.
just beautiful, and I can see an addiction coming on! love watercolors and the fluid nature of them, was just on your painted grapes video, not sure how i landed on this one! lol Thank you for trying all these out for us before we go out and spend the $- :) Maria
This seems like such a wonderful exercise for beginners like me to do! Thanks again for always informing and inspiring at the same time, Sandy!! And I've already placed my order right after these videos went up! (I just went straight to your blog post and decided on my "must haves" for now, with your help of course, and then I watched the videos. Haha) Can't wait to play with my first Daniel Smith Watercolors!!! 😆
Wonderful video Sandy! Although I am not primarily a watercolorist, I've always found Daniel Smith to be a superior product. As far as I'm concerned you did not mix your blues up. ;) I have always considered Phthalo to be warm and Ultramarine to be cool. In fact, I just discussed this in a recent video on split primaries!
+Sandy Allnock LOL. Yes, I have seen artists list them both ways, I think it depends on how you use color. To me, at least, the way I see it seems obvious. Phthalo Blue leans towards green which is warmer than violet therefore it is warm and Ultramarine is cool. Phthalo reminds me of tropical oceans and summer. Ultramarine looks icy like a violety winter sunset. Does that make sense? :)
Walcott Fine Art me too, green is cool, violet is cooler , Blue is the coolest, Ultramarine blue is well known as a violet/purple blue, purple blue and cad red medium (if it’s avaliable)
Who is the youtuber that you referenced about glazing? I'd like to check it out. Also, I'm a sub because of the watercoloring and I'm so pleased to see you doing more with it
So the vertical column color is 2:1 to the horizontal color row? Or as you stated vertical column color is big dot and the horizontal row color is little dot.Am I understanding that correctly?
So I'm probably one of those idiots who buys all the tools but has no talent or common sense. I began with Derwent watercolor pencils and Inktense, and love them, but wanted to move on to "real" watercolors. I bought all 105 colors of the Mijello Mission Gold paints. Do you recommend putting forth the effort of creating a swatch chart for that many colors? If so, I'm guessing I would need to buy one or two of those large uncut sheets of paper? haha Thanks!
Wow! That sounds like heaven. The Mission Gold paints are great and very tempting for art supply addicts. You could swatch all 105 on a 22" x 30" watercolor sheet and then keep a palette with 12-48 of your favourites. Good luck.
You didn’t mess up the warm and cool blues, and monochromatic pigment is the proof, in a pigment of red, when with heat, it turns yellow. And when violet , it turns blue which is a bit Cyanish like a Phthalo blue which is closer to yellow
I like your videos. I would only ask that you increase your volume. The difference between you and the ads that pop up means that my ears get completely blasted when a commercial comes on. That Bealls ad is an ear drum destroyer.

Love this! I love color swatching/ color mixing studies videos.
The grid with the masking fluid is genius! I love making these color charts and waiting for them to dry so they don't bleed together takes so long.
That’s so smart Sandy using masking fluid ! I always have trouble with keeping “in the lines” while making a large chart !😂
Thank You
Thank You

what a fantastic lesson on color...I have to watch it again because it was a lot to take in for one time.. thanks Sandy
pat
Just received the Essentials set, and so I am watching again! TFS, Annette

Art hasnt changed much that last 100 years.

I have multiple brands of professional watercolors. They're each great for different things, but the Daniel Smith are definitely my favorite!
Thank you for explaining how to make this chart 😃. I’m just waiting for my DS Essentials set to arrive. I can’t wait!
AWESOME video! I've been wanting to invest in good watercolors, and debated between M Graham and these. This really helped me decide and I am also going to make a color chart for the first time ever. Thanks Sandy!
I just received my DS essentials set, so I'm eager to get started and paint along with you.

The chart with the boxes is perfect for that :)

This looks awesome!. I need to see what I already have in my stash and do some charts.
Finally a chart with good explanation.
Thank you Sandy Allnok. This video is very helpful.
Thank you so much for the tutorial! Great information.

+Walcott Fine Art lol!! That makes me feel better. I hate disagreeing with the packaging on the set! 😍

Sandy Allnock the. Why are you feeling better
Thank you RUclips algorithm for bringing me here🙏
🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
Beautiful video. Thank you for posting.
I love all things Daniel Smith!!!!
Isn't ultramarine which is purple toned the warm and phalo blue which is greenish the cool?
See the description.
Sandy Allno
this chart is amazing!
Thanks so much, what an amazing video...I'm so bad at mixing colours...

Ohhh shoot I totally forgot to link to that video. Off to go find that link ... Sorry!
+Olivemeartsie Here you go! ruclips.net/video/N8_yRnL4YUY/видео.html
At the 1:20 mark: isn't French Ultramarine a "warmer" blue compared with Phthalo Blue which is a "cooler" blue with a green bias?
Artists debate blues all the time…the great thing is you only need to know what color you’ll get when mixing ❤️
Yes I'd use the blues the other way around. Phthalo blue is a cool blue and a stand in for cyan.
Wow, this is a challenge.
ultramarine blue looks "cool" to me, despite seems everyone is telling its the warm shade of blue.
There’s an ongoing debate fir decades but honestly it doesn’t matter. We can use it when that color, whatever temperature it is. 😍

+James Darrell lol! No, I'd pick maybe a couple colors to swatch. Maybe two reds, two yellows, and two blues. Good luck!

I like the idea of the masking fluid better than using washi tape
Sorry!
