    Hey everyone! Today's video is a chatty long (grab a cuppa) video about some of my favorite art supplies that are underrated or just ignored in the online social media art scene.
    Don't take this video too seriously, it is very possible that they are being praised by people I haven't discovered on RUclips. Also, like everything, personal preferences play a big role and you may not love these products as much as I do. Enjoy!

    I feel thankful for everything you said about Rembrandt! After trying various brands for over a year, this one remains my top favourite. They're cheaper than most professional watercolours in Europe, have a very balanced colour range as well as outstanding performance and transparency. I wish more people talked about these paints.

      I'm so glad! Yes, I completely agree and they are my go-to now, except for colors that they don't make, like some of the primatek Daniel Smith ones. But for the other colors, I'm going straight to their 20ml tubes, fantastic value!

    I agree on all of the above! I got excited when you talked about the Escada (sp) travel brushes! I have one, and it is my favorite out of all of my brushes. I can honestly say that I reach for it EVERY time I paint. Cannot say enough about it! I am still wanting the sketchbook, but I keep putting it off just due to shipping costs. One day, in a weak moment I will actually put it in my cart and push the purchase button! I did get that palette and it is wonderful! I am still trying to figure out how to customize the outside to fit my aesthetic, as red isn’t my favorite color. Other than that, it is perfect. I love the closure on it too. As far as YOU, Irit, you are such a delight to listen to! I just adore your personality and wit. Plus, you are so generous in sharing your knowledge and experiences, so thank you!

    I’m in love with Derwent pencils.... I just discovered the Drawing Pencils and Graphitint 4 weeks ago and have finally collected both sets (except the white, both sold out), but they’re sooo creamy and lovely to use, and the colour palette ❤️❤️❤️❤️. I already had and enjoyed the 36 Inktense tin from last year... but... yeah, Derwent are dreamy... and I LOVE their pencil smell!

    Yes! I always wondered why almost noone talk about Rembrandt. They are SUCH good paints and a very good deal. I think I paid like 9euros (on average, some are more some are less, obviously) per 20 ml tube at Gerstäcker, which is a wicked deal for an artist grade paint. I do not have too many of their colors yet, but I love the ones that I have, and this definitely is a brand that I will be purchasing in the future as well.
    As for Fabriano, I have not tried the Vergatone, but I do have a sketchbook of their's that I quite enjoy (it's a plain black one, I have no idea what it is called) and I absolutely love their watercolor paper, the very basic stuff that is simply called Fabriano Watercolour and is 25% cotton. My favorite paper of all is Canson Heritage, and right after that comes the Fabriano Watercolour.

    • @iritlandgraf
      @iritlandgraf  3 года назад +2

      @@iritlandgraf Yes, it is a great deal. And I just checked out the Austrian Gerstäcker store, and it costs the same there. First, that color looks wonderful on you.. I love my Rembrandt pallets. The colors are incredible I haven’t tried the sketchbook, but it sure is tempting. I love my Museum Acquarelle pencils but. I don’t like Crayons I and II. I suppose I don’t know how to use them. Finally, I have two of the pallets you show but without the inserts. I just ordered two of the ones you show. I really like my pallets, but I can see where you triple its use with the insert. Buyers beware as mine is the same price as yours, and it’s easy to mix them up. Finally, thank you for the heads up on the beautiful "coloring book." What gorgeous work! Thanks, Irit, for all.

    I love love LOVE my Van Gogh pocket boxes. I've been using (and still use) my Pelikan Watercolour set and usually always used them like the opaque ones (which you probably know, too. They're frequently used in school art classes here in Germany [BTW 👋👋 from Germany] ) The basic pocket set of the Van Gogh was the first I ever bought outside of that and I know they're not actually artist grade ones, but are definitely a step above and a good was to erase into the more artist grade stuff.

    • @iritlandgraf
      @iritlandgraf  3 года назад +2

      He's right, they are hard. For people who do full sketches in thick charcoal sticks these would be probably disappointing or not soft enough. I mostly like adding linework with them and for that the hardness is perfect. Some of the colors are a bit similar, but one doesn't have to grab the full set, I have the smaller 12 one.

    Hello Irit- I really enjoy your videos. So easy & relaxing to listen to. For my fave product that I don’t think gets enough credit: I love the Pelikan pan watercolor sets...the transparent set that Ive had for many years and now the opaque, both are 24 color sets. These are not technically “artist grade” but I put them in my “very good to excellent, but not pro” category. On Amazon, the 24 color transparent set sells for $43.00 & the opaque sells for like $15-$20 less. I have to say, I had purchased my Pelikan transparent set back in the late 80s and hadn’t used it since maybe the mid 90s. I took it out a few years ago and it was as if I had used it the day before. No degradation at all, no cracking or anything. The colors are beautiful and can certainly compete with the more expensive artist quality paints in terms of how they lay down & do the beautiful things wcs do, but there are no lightfast ratings, even though Pelikan says they are lightfast & use quality pigments. So these are for anything other than paintings that would be sold or displayed anywhere near sunlight. And also because they use unspecified pigments they may not mix as well as some of the higher quality artists colors🤗👍

    Yay, Dahle 133 - best sharpener ever! Call me crazy but I even take it with me on travels. Super, super great. An art supply I really love and that‘s not widely featured as art supply (rather as drawing supply for kids) are the Faber-Castell erasable pencils. People all over RUclips rave about the Col-Erase (some even say they are superior to the Faber-Castell‘s if they even mention them) but I compared both brands and cannot find any difference. What’s more, in Germany where I live they‘re so much cheaper than the Col-Erase ones. So I‘d definitely recommend them as an alternative for everyone who loves to sketch with erasable pencils.

    Van Gogh got more coverage than Rembrandt so far, haha. I bought a 12 halfpan Rembrandt palette, because the quality of Van Gogh for the price is so great and got me interested. It turned out to be my favorite palette ever ♥ got the Landscape set and added Quin Rose and Chromium Oxide Green.

    I was happy to see this. It confirms my own opinions of these products. I have recently discovered the Van Gogh line and even though I know they are considered a student line and I have tons of artists grade paints I really enjoy them. I started with the new dusk colors, then added the 20 tube set to them. I have been wanting the Graphatint for a while. Also, I have had the palette in my Amazon cart since I saw it a few weeks ago. I love my Escoda Versatil travel brushes and my Dahl 155 sharpener. Thanks for the information. I will probably also purchase the other sharpener.

      maybe, US/Canada M. Graham & Co is an alternative. I must say, I don't know much about this brand, because I don't have them available here in Europe. But, first of all, I think, it is ok to choose a brand nearer to oneselve, to avoid all that shipping and such (mostly also effects price), secondly, I heard from some artists using them. It might be, some special colours you would prefer from brands like DS or Schmincke. but the basic colours must be good - as far as I had heard

    I just found your video and I found it super interesting! Thank you for it! I am a coloured pencil artist who loves watercolours but they don’t seem to love me back... So I will mention supplies I know well and use often. Derwent has a new pencil line called Derwent Lightfast, which compares to Caran d’Ache Luminance. They have unique, complementary colours and I would love to add them to my collection of pencils, which includes the wood box sets of Caran d’Ache Luminance , Pablo and Supracolor Soft, the complete Faber-Castell Polychromos, and quite a few Graphitint. The sharpener... I totally get the fascination people feel for that those looong pencil tips, BUT when we only work with (very expensive) pencils, these sharpeners are killers! They eat the pencils at the speed of light as the angle removes a lot of wood every time we turn the pencil in the sharpener. I have a Derwent Super Point Mini but I rarely use it now. I use a Tgaal pencil sharpener as we can adjust the angle of the sharpening and get needle sharp tips that are precious when working on tiny subjects or details. I am a HUGE fan of Fabriano papers. I only draw on Artistico HP 300gsm as most professional coloured pencil artists as the quality is outstanding! I hope this information will be helpful to someone out there! 🌸

    I stumbled across QOR watercolour paints a couple of years ago and ended up with the full range. They are a different formulation than most but have beautiful rich colour pigment and flow. The price has gone up since I first bought them but they are still reasonable for the quality. I do agree with you on your love of the Derwent pencils. A lot of people say Van Gogh are better than the Cotman watercolours for beginners. I see a lot of people using cotman first, which is fine, i did it too, but if I was to start now, I'd rather been recommended Van Gogh more than i was Cotman. Royal Talens is a fantastic brand, I love it, and when I switched to professional grade I only bought Sennelier (another overlooked brand tbh, it's fantastic if you paint in layers) was on sale. Maybe in the future i'll save up and get some Rembrandt to try!

    • @iritlandgraf
      @iritlandgraf  3 года назад +1

      I agree, Van Gogh is far superior to Cotman. I think Cotman is just really widely available globally, whereas Van Gogh is more common in the EU. Sennelier are beautiful and at least in Europe quite affordable.

    • @RenataaMartinho
      @RenataaMartinho 3 года назад

      @@iritlandgraf Edited to say I'm from Portugal. 🙋‍♀️
      I love my Sennelier paints! I use them when i know I'll be doing layers, and the paints are really beautiful and delicate. I do wish they had more single pigment colours, but I dont remember having a lot of muddying up when painting.
      I know some people stay away from Sennelier, because they have honey on their formulas. Personally i don't mind honey, my favourite watercolours are White Nights (i just can't travel with them because the heat makes them even goopier and they run everywhere). Do you still use paints with honey (since i know you don't use paper with gelatin coating, i can't remember if you've ever talked about paints specifically)? What's your views on it?
      Also, can you please write down the name of the fabriano paper? I couldn't understand it and I'd like to try it 🥰

    • @iritlandgraf
      @iritlandgraf  3 года назад

      I am using what I have left but don't intend to buy them anymore. I cannot say I feel so strongly about using small amounts of honey for products as I feel about most other uses of animals. I do know the industry is problematic in different aspects like environmental issues of honey bees taking over habitats of other bees, cruelty of clipping Queen bees and posting them to faraway beehives. Also honey is meant for the bees and we take it from them feeding them some cheap sugary replacement. As I said, problematic. I'm happy to have other wonderful brands that don't use any animal products so it's not at all a sacrifice for me, although I do love Sennelier and White Nights and enjoy the ones I have.

    • @RenataaMartinho
      @RenataaMartinho 3 года назад

      @@iritlandgraf I see. I should maybe investigate a bit more about those practices. Thankfully White Nights pans are full size, so there's quite a lot of paint for me to go through. Sennelier is another story, since i've loved the palette a lot and it's not as full 😥

    You have me wanting yet more Derwent sets, lol. Have you tried their Color Soft line? I'm curious what the difference is between the colored drawing pencils and the color soft, which are a "colored pencil". I love all their products ive tried but im just curious what the difference is. Also my underrated product would be Princeton Aqua Elite brushes. I absolutely adore them and in the US they are very inexpensive. I have the travel brush set and a few others and no matter what I compare them to, they are still my favorite, and I never see anyone mention them more than in passing.

      I'm sorry Meg, I haven't tried the colors soft and probably won't, since I have good coloring pencils I enjoy. The drawing set seems to be really pigmented and soft, offering an earthy natural colors, I think they also say very light fast. Availablilty is the biggest reason I don't use R. Talens brands. I live in the US and the selection at retail & online stores is very low, especially in the Rembrandt line of watercolors. Thanks for the tip! Thankfully both are colors I don't like so all good :) My favorites are their granulating colors, French Ultramarine, oxides, cobalts, those are lovely!

      @@iritlandgraf Me too, the granulation from Rembrandt paints are gorgeous. There's another paint from Talens I love, is the Black Indian Ink, which is the best I've tryed so far, it is waterproof and the most pigmented.

    17:31 oh I love your pinkish colors in half pans💜 Can I ask their pigment names and brands please?

      Thanks, from right to left (bottom to top ?) the first two purply pinks are limited edition handmade watercolors that are no longer availabe sadly. Then Holbein brilliant pink, Shinhan Pass Bright Red, two more old limited edition handmade paints and Shinhan Pass shell pink is the last :)

    I have two old time manual sharpeners that make lovely points. They are older like 1960 or 70s.

    I want to try the Caran D'ache Museum Aquarelle pencils, but yeah not cheap. maybe for my 40th unless I just end up with a new graphics card, wouldn't turn down either lol 😛

      I recommend looking at the swatches on Jackson's, you can see some colors pack more punch and then others are probably comparable to other brands.

    I had said before these were expensive in the states. Well as it turns out it's more expensive on Jackson's because they only have pans and 10ml tubes and the 10ml tubes are $2-3 more than they are here. I can buy them at a good price here though, which I never checked and I can get 20ml tubes here. So I just ordered 4 to try out:)

    I’m pretty sure Royal Talens are no longer a Dutch Company, but were bought by a Japanese Company, Sakura.

    Wonderful video, I enjoyed hearing your opinions about all these supplies. I've been thinking of getting a desk sharpener, and wondering what is the difference between these two - do you use certain types of pencils in each one? Does the Afmat create a longer point than the Dahle? Thanks for sharing!

      @iritlandgraf  3 года назад +1

      I use all my pencils in both, the Afmat is the really long tips :) Probably Dahle is suitable for most people ;)
