Same. In my opinion, the US remake is inferior. But it is a matter of taste. Ringu relies more on slow building terror and a grounded atmosphere, while the US version is heavy on special effects jump scares and action. So, I'm eager to see how you feel about the original. Just a heads up, never watch the US remake of The Eye, watch the original instead.

Yeah, I just wish you had started with the Japanese original. The American version seems a bit infantilized and with those character changes it's like forced into overused tropes. But still, if this one were the original it would still be a great movie, and it is good anyway. I'm not complaining, I'm happy you're doing it - after all it's already a classic and done it in such a short time since release.

I saw this in theaters with my cousin. We were just terrified out of our minds by the TV scene, and went outside in the dark for my mom to pick us up.
We get in my mom's van, still trying to calm down. When suddenly my mom excitedly tells us to look behind us in the backseat.
I kid you not, my mom had just purchased a new TV. It was sitting right behind us in the vehicle. We legit screamed in terror, and sat shaking in fear the whole ride home.

We hadn't seen a trailer, we didn't know it was thriller/horror - we knew NOTHING. The movie haunted me for weeks, and it freaked me out so much that I eventually became a huge fan of it. I totally understand the Mrs....I was in my 30s already when I watched this in cinema in 2002, "steeled" by watching Slasher movies for two decades. Yet this one got me. Goosebumps all over, and later that night, when lay in my bed and needed to pee, I switched on all the lights on the way to the bathroom, and went there and back again with pretty quick steps...
Honestly - at that time, and prior to this movie, I thought, nothing could get that reaction out of me anymore. We live and learn. 😂

You probably will never get a horror movie like this anymore, focuses on storytelling, character building, atmosphere setting, and show you the right amount of scares which ultimately brings you the effect just like what Jaws did to swimmers. It didn't rely on constant jumpscares like horror movies nowadays, when you finish the movie, you forget everything about it afterwards.
In my opinion, The Ring is one of the best remakes and also one of the best horrors to date.

Let Me In was a remake of Let The Right One In. Probably the best American remake of an international horror movie. I watched both and amazed how good a job the American one did. Both will scare you and creep you out equally. One particular "twist" was "removed" in the remake, but in hindsight, it was a fair choice because it would have been like a clone of the original, too identical. Still, creepy as hell.

No joke, this is my #1 favorite horror movie of all time and it easily surpasses the original material with quite a few poignant themes added to the mix (how omnipresent media is in our life [perfect to spread a curse - should change to smartphones/internet these days!], how it alters our perspective of the world, not to mention the entire strained mother & son relationship subplot, etc.). Hearing the "unaltered" sequence of Samara saying "But I do, and I'm sorry, it won't stop." is absollutely chilling. Yup, Samara with her power of projected thermography would burn these images of horror into the animals and her adoptive parents head to torment them, and it didn't look like an issue of lacking nurturing, it was all her being evil. That twist and the fact that evil wins in the end with Racheal being forced to spread the curse is just the perfect ending for this movie. IGNORE ALL SEQUELS. They are incredibly bad and ruin what made the first one great.

Ring 2 is definitely a big downgrade in quality from this one, which is a shame too since the director of the Japanese original helmed that sequel. But it's not like the Japanese films weren't often subject to really stupid plot details and sub par acting.
But I do think Hideo Nakata was just the wrong choice for an American $50 million English language film. It comes off cheap even though it's a budget increase. and without spoiling things, when Rachel visits Sissy Spacek and they discuss who Samara's father is, that stuff is so dumb.
And that's the stuff you honestly avoid by not watching the Japanese films. Once it gets into possession and ancient Ocean gods I think it's too much. I think The Ring is best as a stand alone ghost story, it is very unique as ghost stories go. Once they free Samara / Sadako from the tape is just becomes normal ghost movie which imo is a lot less cool.

This is the first movie in a long time that scared me when I first saw it. I was alone in the house, watching on the little TV in the kitchen. I watched the whole thing standing in the corner of the counter as far away from the TV as I could get. I haven't found a movie since that scared me and interested me all the way through.

This is one of my favorite ghost movies ever. It's one of the few ghost movies that follows the rules for ghosts to a "T"! Not many do. Just an FYI. The major clue is when Rachel is watching the Samara tape, she says it will never stop. This is why finding her body and putting her at peace didn't work. She can never be at peace.

  • @chrisbloomfield3350

I always felt that the movements of Samara were the scariest part. I.e. moving closer to the victim without appearing to walk at all. But it's just a movie. Only things I've seen do that are spiders *shudders* hahaha.

Pretty much all of the film was shot in Washington State, with the exception of the lighthouse which is in Newport, Oregon. Personally, I would have used the Destruction Island lighthouse off of Kalaloch, Washington, but they didn't. The Quinault ferry was used in this movie and was decommissioned in 2007 and has since been scrapped. The bridge that can be seen in one of the clips is the Deception Pass bridge, and that shot of the stone bridge over the waterfall looks like Christine Falls on Mt. Rainier, but I'm not sure if they had permission to film at that location.
There are even a few comics out there punking Samara by putting the TV on the window sill so when she comes out she falls out the window, or another one shows putting a tv in front of the main TV so she crawls from one into the other. Interestingly enough, I've been to Samarra, Iraq and they have a crazy-looking spiral minaret there that always reminded me of the Tower of Babel.
    The more you know...

I started off watching two other reactor channels. Dasha of Russia I watch because Dasha is adorable and everything even remotely sad makes her cry and it makes me remember why I loved a movie the first time I watched it. Also I want to hold her and comfort her. She's like a sad kitten
I watch Popcorn in Bed because Cassie, and her sister Carly, when she's on, get terrified when movies are scary and try to hide behind their blankets. It's hilarious!
What they both have in common is that the reactors are people I know I'd like. Dasha is the sweetest thing ever and Cassie is a fine woman that anyone would be proud to have as a friend.
The "You, Me and the Movies" couple are great too. He's a friendly, affable guy that I'd happily hang out with, and she's kinda special. I saw something where she was thanking him for putting up with her when she had some issues, and it was so sweet I fell in love with them both.
Also, she has beautiful expressive eyes, and she gets house goosebumps when scared. What's not to love?

I haven't seen the second movie. I don't know if they go further into what Samara's powers are. But it's said in this movie that she made the tape out of nothing. When the doctor was asking her about the pictures that look like x-rays, Samara says that they just are. Meaning she created them from her mind. Like she willed them into existence. And the tape is the same thing.
Great reaction. Maybe you'll check out The Grudge sometime. It's made by the same director and released around the same time too. It's another movie that'll likely give you goosebumps over and over this The Ring did.

25:00 the drawings of the long haired girl seemed to be giving you the chills, in anticipation of seeing her for real. the 1st chill is when the mother drew the hair over someone's face, then here when she sees what her son drew. this is an amazing, freaky film, they paid good homage to the original japanese version "Ringu". there were 5 Ringu films released in japan, and a cross over film "Sadako Vs. Kayako" where pit the ghost/demon from The Ring against the ghost/demon from The Grudge, another great japanese film series! good on you for checking it out! 👍

I feel bad that Mrs. Movies had such an unpleasant experience but it just goes to show how well "The Ring" was made.
There are quite a few scary moments but I think one of the scariest is when Aiden gets frightened when he finds out Rachel helped free Samara. Then what's supposed to happen?! What have they unleashed?!?! This is going to get worse?!?!?!
The original story is a novel. I think the Japanese movie is a more faithful adaption but there are a number of things that didn't work well when attempting to convert it into a movie and I think the US version did an excellent job around those issues making it a better movie experience. Other than those changes, both movies are extremely similar. Even all of the settings look alike.
I was disappointed with "The Ring 2". "Rings" was all right.
