6:53 "She's got the shine"
You're not far off, because this was written by Stephen King's son
Horror runs in the family
Get your fkn shine box lol
And he has mentioned several events of King's books in his, so he's writing in the same Universe.
@@minski76 Some of Stephen King's recent novels like "Dr. Sleep" also mention events from Joe Hill's books, so they're definitely in agreement that they're writing stories in the same universe, at least some of them.
@@flaysol7719awesome comment 🤣🤣🤣
A fun small spooky movie. I liked that the kids aren’t idiots and they get on as siblings. A nice change
I think the ending was terrifying. I was 70% convinced that Finney was going to walk out of the basement and disappear because the whole he was captured, he was just another ghost.
The little girl was phenomenal in this.
So was the main boy who played Finney.
I know right and for a kid I know who's never been spanked she pulled that scene off spectacularly well
I agree with you. She was terrific.
Girl is amazing 💙💙 definitely be best friends with Ellie from last of us series and hit girl
gwen..? her actress?
I wondered about the window grate as well until someone pointed out that after the first two times, the Grabber never fully enters to the basement. The basement door opens into the basement to the right. From where he was standing, the Grabber couldn't see the window because the door would block his view. Finn was really lucky that the Grabber's brother showed up unexpectedly for an extended stay. This caused the Grabber to put his normal "method of operation" on hold. This was good for the story because the audience doesn't have to see the pedophile in action. That would have been too horrifying. It was enough to know it was around the corner. The Grabber's extended absence gave Finn plenty of time to be alone and work on his escape attempts. Such a damn good movie. I'm so glad you guys reacted to this. I can't wait to see you guys react to "X" and "Pearl."
I'm not always onboard with these types of ghost-centric horror movies, but the concept of helpful ghosts and a living person causing all the problems was refreshing. The thing that really stood out for me is the acting skills of the two main kids, Mason Thames and Madeline McGraw were phenomenal as Finney and Gwen.
It got me that you both mentioned "The Shine". The movie is based off a story written by Stephen King's son.
I love this movie. They did an excellent job of getting us emotionally invested in kids we only see for a few minutes on screen. The cast did a great job.
Fun fact, the actress who plays the sister is the real life sister of the actress who plays Violet at the beginning of Doctor Sleep (also Nell as a little girl in The Haunting of Hill House). The two leads in this were so good! Such good child actors - can't wait to see what they are in next.
In the hands of a lesser director, this hybrid of supernatural and true crime could've been a laughable disaster...yet Scott Derrickson pulls it off like a master. It all WORKS, and of course, the great acting by all helped tremendously.
The writer is Joe Hill, who is Stephen King's son (yes, THAT Stephen King). He just uses his mom's maiden name, because then he would be Joe King throughout his career. Stephen King is a funny guy.
This movie was really good. The part where he was talking to Robin on the phone and the ending where Gwen sees Finn walking out of the house made me cry.
No dna testing back then. Crazy how easily we take that stuff for granted now but how important collecting and holding onto evidence turned out to be.
One of my favorites of the year. Parent’s definitely have a hard time watching this cause of the subject matter and I definitely got scared a couple of times. It was so satisfying to see the kid kill the grabber.
Anyone else notice the "You forget your life when you die" thing is lifted directly from Casper?
Well in reincarnation, how the hell do you not know anything about your past and become a completely different person? Cuz you forgot.
The director of this also made The Exorcism of Emily Rose,a movie you should see(or have you already.I’ve seen so many episodes I can’t remember). Also, this is based on something by Joe Hill,Stephen King’s son.Just a few tidbits I thought you might find interesting.
The Cops: "We responded to the location based an anonymous tip that we believe came from the subject's deceased brother."
I'm happy to see Joe Hill's books adapted to the big screen, especially when it's done so well. He's easily almost as good as his father, except Stephen King is a book-churning machine that never stops putting new stuff out, while Joe Hill writes at the pace of a normal human being. I also love how they seem to have agreed to write some stories in the same universe and Joe Hill's books sometimes mention events from Stephen King novels, and some of the most recent King novels sometimes also mention events from Hill's books.
The part you jumped out of your seat at made me and everyone else at the cinema jump to😂
The movie they’re watching is The Tingler, directed by one of my favorite directors William Castle.I even wrote an essay on him(containing some incorrect information) for school and bought his Autobiography,Step Right Up,I’m Gonna Scare the Pants Off America.
The Black Phone movie is based off of a short story by Joe Hill (Stephen King's son), so you're probably on to something with the whole "shining".
I love this movie! The kids were incredible & the fact that they both had psychic/medium abilities was so unexpected and so cool.
I absolutely loved this movie. I had so many different emotions watching this. This also gave me similar vibes to Prisoners which is another movie worth watching if you ever have the chance. I love the fact that Ethan Hawke and James Ransone made another movie together. This movie is definitely one the better horror movies that came out of this year, next to Smile and Prey.
Totally agree, very similar to Prisoners. With some supernatural aspects mixed in.
Great movie. Simple premise, no bloat, perfectly executed.
I’m genuinely surprised you guys haven’t watched Sinister. You should definitely check that one out! The Black Phone is based on a short story by Joe Hill, Stephen King’s son, a great author in his own right.
12:12 - Except DNA testing for criminal cases didn't begin until 1986.
Even in its early infancy DNA testing wasn't able to pinpoint a specific person... It was more a blood type match
The scene where Robin is teaching Finn how to attack with the phone was emotionally gut-wrenching. It's a tragic but touching moment
that part always gives me full body chills.
you mentioned both pennywise and the shining, yet I think you missed the fact that the short story its based on was written by one of stephen kings sons, joe hill. who also played the little kid in the surrounding story in creepshow.
In the original short story, the Grabber is a part time clown (a la John Wayne Gacy) Because the film versions of "It" were so fresh in everyone's mind, they switched the Grabber from a clown to a magician. I actually think the magician is scarier in this instance.
Joel Hill wrote the Grabber based on John Wayne Gacy, as all the victims were boys.
Ironic you made the John Wayne Gacy comparison, that’s who the character is based on essentially. It’s more apparent in the book
@30:41 - “Fucking shit! God damn it! Fucking kids.” 😂😂
My son screamed so loud at the theater at the first scene where Mrs. Movie's covered her eyes. Had me on the floor laughing so hard.
I always love seeing Mrs. Movies getting scared and screaming or yelling in sudden panic! Priceless!! :P
As someone born in 1978, you were right in saying it was a great year! 😊
I just watched this movie last night and it was a LOT better than I expected. Some great acting from the kids.
One of my favorite horror movies of the year. Great performances by the teens and Ethan Hawke is terrifying and entertaining.
This movie and Barbarian I think are the best horror movies of the year. I hope your patrons has Barbarian on a list for you guys to watch. It is a total WTF movie and it's wonderful.
The baseball scene makes me think of Dazed and Confused. Mr. and Mrs. Movies, have you watched that?
The black phone movie was based on a book by Joe hill aka the kid (billy) from creepshow
He would forever be known as the kid that killed the grabber.
What if the Grabber was still alive though?
“Jesus what the fuck” is my new favorite movie line
Mine is "fuckin fart knocker" lol
I love how everytime you thought you knew what was going on you were completely wrong lol. The entire time I'm just like nope...nope....nope...just wait till you find out! Lol
DNA testing wasn't very good for along time. Even in the 90's it still had room for improvement. It wasn't really until the early 2000's that it really has advanced enough to make a bigger difference. I can remember an episode of Homicide Hunter where Joe Kenda comments on one of his cases where DNA testing at the time was rather unreliable.
I think at this time they could only really determine secreter or none secreter. They also needed a lot of DNA to do any test and once done the DNA was 'destroyed'. They could probably do a comparison if they had a big enough sample and the correct person.
They were doing blood typing which (usually) pinpointed the blood type of the perpetrator. Combined with fingerprints, it did a decent job. Poor police work caused more problems than the technology of the time.
The movie he's watching with the tub & red color is The Tingler, that one would be fun for y'all to check out!
Saw this one in theaters months ago, felt like I was watching IT sequel with a Sinister vibes
I really like the dad in this movie. He’s not a perfect man and he struggled to just be a decent man but he was trying. Very interesting character to not just be a bad guy.
Did you not see him abuse his kids?
@@theslashmastah
It was a whooping. It’s frowned on now but in the 70’s teachers could hit you. So you can’t view it through a today lense. Also it’s why I said he wasn’t perfect and struggled to be decent. He was a normal guy raising two kids alone. His kids are a reflection of who he really is.
@@B-Dad Not sure if beating your kids in a drunken stupor would be considered just a whooping
@@tbates2906
He wasn’t drunk. It was the next morning. Drunk would have been beating her during the night when he got home. He was upset not drunk
@@B-Dad I always get a kick out of people claiming abuse is spanking... I got whooped as a kid because I was a little a hole.... Now do I think he went a bit to far yes I do.. But back in the late 70s mid 80s even this was common as all hell and its how we learned
Great surprise of a movie this year. Hawke was phenomenal, should play more bad guy roles
Such a great reaction! Really enjoyed watching it with you guys!
You haven't watched Sinister?! Ohhh! Hope that happens soon.
I'd really love the miss reactions to the tapes
@@eddv6090 hahaha! Definitely
That movie creeped me out, haven't seen the second one though
That movie was so terrifying. I remember I got scared for one week hahaha
The rope physics scene was great lol
Amazing movie. And the kids did a WOW! Job.
The scene where she is being beaten by her dad, is some of the best acting I’ve seen from anyone, let alone a kid in a long time.
I remember coming out of the cinema and the first thing me and my partner said was, wow how good of an actor was the girl.
That scene gets me every time.
@@oisquidyx The actor who played the Dad and the boy who played Finney did incredible in that scene too. The Dad's shaking rage was terrifying and Finney's helplessness at wanting so much to help his sister but he's frozen in fear, is so heartbreaking. All three actors combined is what made the tension-filled scene believable.
Keep up tye reviews. Really enjoy watching your reactions
Steak-stuffed phone receiver is a rough way to go out. Definitely a more cowboy way of doing it than stuffed with dirt.
By the way,Jesus,What the Fuck? is the name of my new Country music album.
Y’all be safe. Supposed to be a bunch of snow y’all’s way this weekend or week👍
You both should react to the movie Smile, other than the way it ends that movie scared the hell out of me when watching it in the theaters plus a lot of good jump scares there and it is starring Kevin Bacon's daughter as well. Good reaction I loved this movie as well and Ethan Halk does such a good job being creepy. I think the story of the Grabber is that he was abducted as a child and brought to that house with the Black Phone in it and the one that took him played the Nauty Boy game with him in some way as well.
Thank you beautiful people for being so awesome
Great Joe Hill movie. Now if only they would adapt a film version of his novel "Heart-Shaped Box"...
If they ever make Black Phone 2, I want to find out what happened to the other kids, and how they die by the hand of the grabber. Also if Gwen gets kidnapped next, would she sacrifice herself to save her brother Finn?
Cool movie but yeah, I kept saying "you got So many weapons down there!"
Such an amazing movie reaction! Will you guys be reacting to Smile?😀
Actually if you look at Robin's ghost his body has a paw print on his chest. He met the dog.
I liked the Stephen King references in this. This was fun and intense. Never seen it before.
Great scenes with Robin and Vinny both first and last part were cool and sad
This is written by Stephen King son and based alittle off of Gacy who only killed boys. Its also the reason the kids inheriting it from their mother have the shine.
Just saw this the other night…loved it!
The Black Phone is one of the greatest supernatural horror movies of all time. The story, performance's, music, images, astomphere, tension, and cinematography was outstanding and incredible. Ethan Hawke did a phenomenal and spectacular job portraying The Grabber as he put tons of emotion and depth into his role. It was decent. To this day I still watch it and I consider it a classic. It never gets old. 😍💯😎👍
I've heard this from people.... Mainly those that are fans of the movie.. but people nonetheless... Lol jk
Supernatural elements in horror isn't my thing.. But I enjoy watching people get scared 🤣
Ok, let's not over-exaggerate...
I liked the movie. But that's a stretch. Nonetheless it's a good 8/10 movie.
@@SeanIsTooOP I'm biased against supernatural/paranormal horror but I still give it 3/10
The highest rated horror for me in that category is still The Conjuring which I gave a 5/10
Weird. I thought it was one of the most disappointing movies I've watched in quite some time. It shouldn't have been marketed as a horror movie.
6:18 I just met John Dugan who played Grandpa in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre this past Monday night while attending a screening if an indie horror film he was a part of called Harlow's Haunt. Nice guy (got a small clip of the viewing on my channel, though he is mixed in with the crowd and you cant see him in the actual clip)
They didn't do DNA testing in 1978.
I think this movie was inspired by the true story of Johnny Gosch a paperboy that was abducted in the 70s. And if you like these you should watch "Lovely Bone" and "The Girl in the Basement" also part taking by true storys.
As a mum of a 4 year old and an also being an older sister to two boys aged 16 and 13 and a 16 year old girl this movie genuinely terrified the fuck outta me it’s honestly a heartbreakingly incredible movie
Dude.....I was just about to go to bed. Then I saw this on your channel. Time for another 🍺
16:49 Same
a funny christmas movie for you two, The Ref
I found out after watching this, but the short story this movie is based on is by Stephen King's son. Which would explain why I was reminded of the Shining and It.
Is the dad not Daniel faraday from lost? Lol😂
Night of the Creeps(1986). 👍
This movie, Smile, and The Menu are my favorite horror movies from last year.
The old movie they watched was not an episode of the Twilight zone. It was in fact a movie called The Tingler starring Vincent Price. Very creapy film, well worth a watch.
Tom Savini designed the mask,
16:48 lol iv heard her scream be4 but not like that...that had dome bravado in it lmao 🤣
I love the sister character she was alil badass her brother to
The scary movie he's watching is "The Tingler"... worth a watch! A Vincent Price classic!
Cool movie reaction
Great movie, I love Ethan Hawke in these kinds of roles.
Honestly, I can see this being a franchise starter, with the killer returning as a ghost and trying to manipulate people through the black phone to kill for him.
year end to all great films really cool
This definitely beats 24 lol
I've never even heard of this movie. It looks like a good one. I'll have to watch for it.
This movie creeped me out bigtime and made me so scared the whole time. Especially being a mother. Also it's not confirmed why the Grabber is broken. Whether it was due to his own child abuse OR if he had a normal childhood & still ended up broken (Which is even scarier, when you think about it). It's not confirmed because like Ethan Hawke said himself, "because it doesn't matter why he's broken, what matters is he IS broken."
The movie shows the Grabber was a sick paedophile that murders his victims after they play his "naughty boy" game. They made a few subtle signs to show what he was, hence why he was shirtless, & why one victim mentions the grabbers "favourite" part of naughty boy etc.
Also noticed that the Grabber did, in fact pick certain types of kids. The Grabber only picks boys and notice how they all have long hair, that he could play with.😖
I think this movie would of been alot better if we never see the kid ghosts, only hear them over the phone. The suspense woulf of been alot better cuz you wouldnt know wether they were truly dead or if maybe they were trapped in another room.
I dont know. I just think showing the "dead kids" as ghosts thst he can clearly see is what took the fear away from me. At the point i wasnt scared for his fate cuz he was shown to us to have "powers" lol.
Excellent choice! Love this movie 😎👍
You guys haven't seen Sinister? I don't know if you should. I would say it's too scary. Not in a fun movie way but in an "I don't want to keep watching this" way. It was ranked scariest movie in a scientific study done that measured average audience heart rate.
I’m saying this a year later but if he went upstairs the guy that said “fuck with Finn again I fuck with you” his names robin snd the grabber was gonna beat him with robins belt if he got caught
Surprisingly good movie.
Remember jump scares are really something unexpected that fin a flash startles you to me scares is something that makes you believe your health us in danger and can go on fir some time imo but my most heart pounding moment is when he gets the lock open and the dog starts barking my favorite moment is the moment Bruce says to grabber fins arm us mint next thing you hear is grabbers neck snapping! I saw this in the theaters lived it loved your reaction honestly kparents should use this movie to teach kids about the dangers of "grabbers" out there what to look for what to avoid basically stranger danger dobnot approach ant kind if veh etc
Oh man ya’ll definitely need to see Sinister if you haven’t! One of my favorite horror movies of all time!
American History X
Now that's a powerful movie
Abracadabra I want to reach out and grab you. Makes sense.
great film
Coolll movie. goodnight 👊🏻
