I’m seriously about to find an ‘88 Corolla (my first car), drive out to the strip mall parking lot in my ex-girlfriend’s (old) neighborhood and sit there and stream this. Not even to cry, just to pretend I’m young again.

Anything “emo” related brings me back to a time in my life where everything was ok and existence seemed so linear. This playlist took me back to my preteen years - riding bikes after school, sneaking out during sleepovers to explore the neighborhood, kissing my crush in the snack bar of the local roller rink. Life felt as if it was complicated then but little did we realize how at peace we actually were. Those long lost friends and memories are ones that truly make me tear up sometimes. Not only were those days simple, but they were the ones we never knew we’d look back on wishing we could experience it just one more time. I hope anyone that reads this who thinks they’re a failure or a disappointment remembers that child with the world in their eyes. Those late nights of playing pickup football with the other neighborhood kids. The feeling that anything really was possible. Don’t give up on those memories. Use them to will yourself through the dark times. Much love to you all and I wish everyone a peaceful, prosperous and, most importantly, happy existence.
Edit: I never expected so many of you to be touched by these words. It means so much to know I’m not alone in these feelings. Much love to every single one of you.

We didn’t have phones and constant distracting technology attached at our hips and we were better off for it. I enjoy being an adult because I love my wife and children, but I wish we could go back. I wish tech stopped in 1995. AOL was good enough for me. Playing hide and seek in the neighborhood. PlAying rollercoaster tycoon on the pute. Skateboarding everywhere. Exploring the woods behind our houses and in other neighborhoods. Going to the carnival at the local church parking lot every year. Life was simpler then because it was simpler. I want to go back so bad. But I can’t. Just tired of all this fucking technology.

I think the thing most missed is the simplicity of emotions when you're a child. Happiness. Sadness. Excitement. Before you have time to grow conflicted, contrived, doubtful, confused. Where complex emotional situations tear your identity from one place to another and your sense of self is scattered.

This just reminds me of when I’d got off work and I sat in the parking lot until 10:30 (we closed at 9) and my manager asked if I was ok. I’d respond with, “yeah… no… I’m not sure?” He said, just need some time? He was so nice to me ever since that day. Best part is a few months later same thing happened, but we both noticed each other on opposite ends of the parking lot, we both sat in our cars for about an hour just looking at the other car knowing exactly what was going on. Conversations without words are the most powerful.

I've been a Midwest fan for years, but something about this.
This is what it feels like to wake up and get to work at 6am and it's dark and it's cold. But it's mid December, so when you get off work at 6pm it's dark and it's cold again and it's raining or even snowing now, so you've gotta drive 20 miles home in the middle of it, and then you finally get home at like 7 after driving home past crowded restaurants and stores and bright ass Christmas decorations glaring you in the face past your windshield wipers, and realizing you literally missed an entire day and that the holidays will have come and gone before you know it, and that it's already two weeks til Christmas and you haven't even started shopping yet. And then when you get back to an empty apartment because you totally don't feel alone enough as it is, you have just about enough time to eat and play a video game for 30 minutes before you gotta go to bed and wake up at 4:30 to do the whole goddamn thing again, and you wanna say something to your partner, but they're 3000+ miles away and busy with something else so you just have to say "I love you. I'm sorry I'm never here. Thanks for sticking around. I'll see you tomorrow maybe." And you know what they're gonna say, it's not your fault, you're working your ass off, you're a hero. But it never feels like it. So you just suck it up and go to bed and try not to feel completely bereft of anything but pure agony.
You can cope well enough in the summertime, but in the winter, it's almost impossible.

Honestly that was just me venting about life at that point in time. I have seasonal affective disorder pretty bad, so shit got pretty real there for a little while, pulling twelve hour days in the dead of winter. Especially these Southern winters where all it ever does is rain and it's gloomy all the time and you can't help but sit there and focus on everything that's going wrong. But. Unfortunate as it is, the only way out is through sometimes. It is what it is.

There's a strange dynamic with nights like this. We look back on our darkest, most hopeless of times with a bit of romanticism. There is something special about not knowing where you're going, or if you will ever succeed. You feel things on a strong level. It's difficult and depressing, but also very visceral, raw, and genuine. But the perseverance of your internal flame will manage to keep you warm on cold, starry winter nights.
Then, years later, you look back and realize while that part of you will never go away, those tough times made you stronger and more resilient, and you appreciate the courage you had to summon to keep moving forward. This type of music complements that better than any other type of music I can think of, it's very special, and reading through these comments I'm glad I'm not the only one who managed to get something positive out of their darkest times.

Reading through these comments and sobbing more and more, so many people feeling the same makes me both extremely sad and incredibly less alone and more understood... not even midwestern, i'm eastern european, but this music speaks levels to me as to so many here. 15 years have passed and i'm now almost 30, feeling the same heavy pain i felt as a kid. Only difference is back then there were a bunch of friends that shared the feelings, now not a single soul in my life to share my pain with... noone except this music understands. Shit life throws at you keeps piling up and life goes by trying to deal with it but never quite managing... and that persistent feeling of "When will life really begin?" that never went away since early teen years.

I’m a Midwest 2000’s kid and this feels like the day Borders closed down. They were doing a big clear out sale and so everything was really cheap and I got some science kits from them.
Or like in my state it’s cloudy almost all winter, so the light pollution gets built up and the sky is an almost electric orange.
Or jumping on the trampoline or stargazing at my parents farm. Or going to the only elementary school for miles. Or going to the city pool even though where I lived was barely a town.
Me and my family all getting together in the suburban. Sometimes sitting in the trunk on the drive home from church, donuts in hand. Sitting in the trunk of a pickup on the wheel as we go bouncing down the gravel roads to help my nana do different errands.
My godfather took me hunting. We didn’t get anything but it was a lot of fun and I saw a bluish-grey deer.
And also, I don’t live in the Midwest anymore and DID YOU KNOW THE REST OF THE COUNTRY DOESNT HAVE HALF PRICE BOOKS?! I LIVE IN SUCH A POPULATED AREA BUT THERE ARE NO SECOND HAND BOOKSTORES ANYWHERE NEAR ME

I use to play this playlist a lot after my breakup it made me think I wasn’t good enough for her. I did nothing to deserve this I gave her all the love I could’ve ever given to someone. She even told me how much she loved me and then she left as if she never said such words. It didn’t matter how much she apologized I was already broken inside and torn up from how much time I invested. Whether it was hours, days, months and even skipping out on family time all for her. I was broken though, but I’ll never let it happen again as I am now out of that hole and had set it aflame. I’m more positive than I was before. I’m so glad to be more confident and more loving towards myself as it feels as if I’m at peace, I am good enough I have lots of love to give because the world around us needs it most when it’s in scarcity. Thanks for this playlist, I hope someone finds their way out of the darkness and learns to love the silence.

I’m not feeling alright. I found the love of my 39 year old life. And she just said she can’t be in a relationship right now. I have no idea how to process it and feels like everything in my life has lost all it’s flavor. I am literally sitting alone, feeling abandoned and heartbroken. Haven’t much family or friends to share what I am feeling.

Lots of great songs. I remember I would listen to Unfinished every September 4th to remember my ex-boyfriend. It still gives me chills, the lines, "I still dream of December
, Dancing together with rings on our fingers, And the two shall become.." How Chris trails off at the final line, it's a feeling that can't be easily described. I'm glad I'm better now. I owe it to Mineral.

Geez. For me, the times of emo were my high school years, learning who I was, learning what life had to offer but really not going anywhere, not amounting to much of anything. Half of those friends I spent time with are now dead thanks to wrecks, bad decisions or drugs in a miserable small town that I moved away from. But every so often, I hear a playlist like this and takes me back to sitting outside my girlfriend of the time's house and playing acoustic guitar with her dad while she just stared and smiled. Life was so much easier.

I was in college when Sunny Day Real Estate came out. Loved those first two albums, played them on college radio all the time, and often listened late at night being sad about girls. Life does get better from there.
Now I'm 47 and laying next to my sleeping wife who is recovering from her second cancer surgery, and I can't help but wonder how much time we have left.

i feel weird and out of place being born and raised in california "the bay" and listening to this because i love where i live but reading these comments i almost have this romantisized view of being a small town emo teenager and just running around late at night with my friends. idk it just feels strange because im 16 and i have friends and we hang out and have fun and i love them and i feel like im doing what i want to be doing right now but every night when i come home i still feel empty. i think its just because school is so stressful and i dont know what i want to do with my life or even if i could get into / pass college even if i wanted to go. i guess im just pouring out my emotions into this comment so maybe i can look back at it when im at a different point in my life, i love you all and just know you can always change you're life for the better no matter what has happened in it so far.

it really does sound nice but as someone who lived in socal, now lives in a small town, finding friends to run around w it so, so hard and rare.. and, no one ever really runs. we all get holed up. i have a lot of romanticized ideals like yours too, maybe even more, but man.. i promise it’s not what it seems. i really wish it were. i feel the same emptiness, though i’ve got no friends to hang with either way, so i’m glad you’ve got something going on. personally, i’m just hoping college next fall brings the community and intensity i’ve been longing for and without for years. i really hope you do get to look back on this and say you were able to find your people to run around with. it sucks so hard that we got stuck with all the teen romanticization when we have significantly less freedom than our parents and theirs.... luckily though, most of us can find that from 18-25, maybe onward. really is hard to cope with in the mean time though, cos it’s so easy to want it all so badly anyway. what’s there not to love, really? do you ever get that feeling you miss it even tho u never lived it? idk, man, i’m rambling on but i sincerely wish the best of luck to you. we’re gonna endure all this cruel longing and find our groove, and all this is gonna be a dim memory. i don’t have faith in much else but that

This reminds me of working at my old job. It was one of the worst, most busiest nights there, and I finally got off hours after I was supposed to already be off. I was waiting for my ride. It was the beginning of 2021, I was about to be 21, I couldn't drive, didn't own a car, finished home-schooling but came out not any more smart or really talented than I was going in, could only work jobs like this because I didn't know how to do anything else, and was constantly facing criticism and harsh comments from everyone around me about how underdeveloped I was. I remember it all building up to that one moment, I was so mixed. Angry, upset, confused, and just done with it all. Before my ride came to get me, I thought a lot about how much I hated where I was, who I was, and what I was doing with my life. In that moment that I had enough, and was gonna do something about it. Still in the process, learning to drive, getting my own car soon, and moving out. It's never too late to learn or do anything. There's still always the option, the chance. You just have to put the effort into achieving it.

      @@Jonathanbrynt I'm definitely doing. Lol.
in all honesty, not that great haha. I'm a lot less stressed out since I'm currently not employed anywhere, but I fear that I've become a neet. I no longer have the ability to work 40+ hour weeks at the awful jobs I've worked at for the past 6 years as I just can't handle it anymore, but I'm not qualified for much of anything else. Eventually gonna run out of money and well, at this point, not sure how I can continue to live without a job. Even though I'm with my parents, they're still making me pay rent. Not really sure what to do, just kinda letting things pass me by until I really Have to deal with them. Trying to find work from home, tho, so maybe things will eventually look up. Things haven't been exactly great the past 5 years for me, just kinda hoping at some point, if I keep working at it, things will get better, I'll maybe meet someone, etc. Although, none of that has happened, and at this rate, I'm not really sure it ever will. Things are just kinda happening and it's mostly out of my control. No idea what's going to happen to me as time passes, lately, every single day has just been the same way. Sorry if I kinda vented there lol.

Note to my future self when I come back to this.
You did it bro, look how far you have come. Look at all the hard work you’ve put in and look how it paid off. Look back at the first time you kissed her. Look back at the time you felt hopeless. The time life felt like it was over. The adventures, the sadness. The hope and the joy. Look at you now. You’re doing it bro, just believe in it. Believe in yourself. It’s okay if you’re back looking at this because something happened. Just don’t dwell in the bad and focus on the good. It could just be a bad day, but it’s not a bad life. Chin up. I love you. Don’t forget to tell her you love her, I know she means everything to you. Don’t be afraid. I love you guys.
