What bass is that?
I liked the part when the bass told me everything was gonna be alright :,)
It's always like that on this channel...Peace
I should be able to like this comment twice 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼💯
Don't know what's better. The bass telling us its gonna be alright or davie504s therapy lol. Gotta love those bass players.

So... This popped up on my feed as I was sitting here lost in depression. This year I lost my father my brother and my wife... and out of nowhere.. this wonderful piece of music appears before me. I'm not sure really what happened but i ended up in a heaping mass of tears... but i feel better. it's almost as if the notes say " don't worry, it's going to be ok". My father was an musician and played a little of everything. He had a studio for a bedroom more or less. When i was sad growing up, dad would play for me. I'm 30 now and he's not here to make it right. I'm sure this comment will get burried but Charles, thank you for this.
Hope your ok mate🙏
Dude...hang in there...
Music is so special. Hope you’re doing better man
im here for you man
it's going to be ok
This piece makes me feel a way no other song I’ve ever heard ever has. It makes me feel sort of sad, nostalgic, calm, optimistic and peaceful. Charles deserves so much more for making this masterpiece.
Thank you!
Brings a tear to my eyes and makes me remember when shit was decent
You dont play the bass. You make it sing.

seriously the most beautiful bass solo i’ve ever heard in my life.
Have you ever heard ryan martini
If you liked it then check out Michael Manring - Selene.
He pretty much pioneered this whole play style with the piccolo bass :)
Look up some 6 string bass solos. They're breathtaking. There's a good one named pink moon and another called this strange life, by a very amazing bassist here on YT, I don't know the name of. You'll find it
Check this out. This is my favorite bass piece. This is Michael Manring who really pioneered these hipshot tuners. ruclips.net/video/aY4Ra2KOyas/видео.html
Also look at:
Jean Baudin [vanishing, transcend]
Curtis Rielley [the chase]
I almost clapped, and I'm just sitting here in my bedroom like an idiot.
Haha, me too😁
😆😆
I clap anyway!!!
00:55 reminded me of "Forever Young" By Alphaville. The chorus. Incredible, dude.. Just mesmerized by it.
AGREED
I simply cannot unhear "Forever Young, I want to be, Forever young" over that main melody
then its not just me
Same :D
All I hear is "when you were young" the killers lol
It's only like two notes away from being the same melody, so yeah
I read this and immediately heard it
This is probably one of the only professional bass solos that I've heard that wasn't just a bunch of scales without tune melody or a story to tell. This is my new favorite solo.
My thoughts also
Orion would like to know your location
@@Copp.r as much as i love that song, orion is not a bass solo, and beyond that, although it's very good the solo is only 20 seconds long out of a 8:27 long song
MelloYello yeah but the bend at the beginning of the solo is very haunting, if you take into fact that the writer was taken from this world much to soon, the solo tells a story
In all honesty, I think this may be one of the most amazing things I've ever seen and heard. The technique and musical composition of this piece are rivaled only by each other.
It's astonishingly beautiful, and technically mind-blowing all at the same time.
Agreed!!!
Hear this with your eyes close, it does magic.
The fast part gives u the push u need to chase ur dreams.
The slow part gives u immense calmness that everything is safe and secured.
Its a therapy.
Well said...
This is why I love music, it's simply just amazing
I'm not lying when i say i wouldn't mind this being the last thing i hear when it's my time to go.
music is a beautiful thing
Agreed
Listen to "Michal Manring - enormous room"
Same!
Couldn’t agree more
BRAVO! Came because of Davie. Stayed because of Charles. Now i am forever a fan
Epico
And Forever Young?
same here!
OMG
unknown fact: when he starts to emit light at 1:46 , this is not post editing. he has found the chord that David played to please the lord, therefore, he has been chosen by the divine to rule humanity with a bass in hand.
in all seriousness though, this really put music into perspective for me. look what this man made with two hands and only four strings.
Second part is so true, he really used everything on that instrument to its full advantage, he’s also amazingly talented too
Not David, but Davie
Just beautiful. It strikes the right balance between compositional excellence and technical skill. The use of the hipshot tuners give it a cool novelty without overusing it and turning it into a gimmick. The song follows a three act structure with the finale being a reprisal of the opening, which makes the brain feel nostalgic for the intro just moments after having heard it for the first time. It's as much theatre as it is music.
Hauntingly beautiful.
Coundnt have said it better. Spiot on.
Excellent analysis.
Probably the best summation of anything that ever was in all of human history.
It's not a gimmick. He's using those tuners to play otherwise inaccessible harmonics. This is my fav of all his work I have heard, as it truly delivers real emotional depth via both melody and sensitive nuance.
Who else wanted to hear an extended version of 0:00 - 01:21? Idk why but that part is so beautiful, of course the whole thing is, but I just love the first part. ♥️
Yeah
Honestly the best part less is more in this case
I am so with you on that. I wish there was LOTS more of that in this performance.
im with you too!
I agree.. the whole thing is extremely impressive, but that first part is soooo relaxing that you need more of it..
Celestial tuning sounds beautiful and heavenly, and that's definitely what the bass solo entails! Great work here man, always a pleasure to see ye

Literally the most amazing piece of bass music I've ever heard. The parts where you detuned the natural harmonics with the slapshot legitimately remind me of shooting stars.
There is some "Forever Young" vibes going on.
Ramonzeira Yeah exactly I thought he was really inspired by it, first thing that came to my mind
At the begging I thought I heard a little bit of “faithfully” too
One riff is a single note different from forever young. One note off. More than “a vibe” just one note different is a direct rip off
Forever Young is a song by who?
@@roku_nine Alphaville
The music between 0:54 and 1:21 is just so utterly beautiful. It feels like saying goodbye to a best friend, remembering all the good times you had together and watching them disappear before you while they smile and wave goodbye.
Johnny S dude I’m finna cry why u do this?
Johnny S that just happened to me so I’m literally crying right now
Dude. He ripped that part off. It's driving me insane trying to figure out what song he was playing right there. When I figure it out you believe I'll be right back here. And before anyone gets angry, just because he ripped it off doesn't mean it isn't amazing. I play guitar and write stuff and unintentionally rip stuff off all the time. It's just a matter of being caught

Definitely sounds like something Devin Townsend should be singing majestically too.

Absolutely.
100% agree. Devin Townsend is my favorite musician. (I understand that doesnt qualify me to make judgements in absolutes) Im just saying I hear it too (;
So true! The tapping and harmonics sections were like something out of Ki, and the strumming part felt like the ending of Singularity. Amazing track from Charles!
This piece sounds more like Michael Manring to me. I wonder if he wrote it himself? Excellent execution
This kind of music remind me to ichika, the best thing is that this one doesnt last only 30 seconds

I still come back to this every now and then. Simply amazing. I have no idea how one could create something like this. There are so many beautiful songs out there, but to create something so beautiful and with ONE instrument, none the less a BASS??? It’s insane to me

When You Were Young by The Killers has a similar vibe to that melody.
It sounds like a skrillex melody I can’t put my finger on the name.
The intro and outro is better. it gives me chills
This really makes me feel something. I don’t quite know how to describe it, but it just feels very nostalgic in a way. Also a bit sentimental, but it’s a good kind of sentimental. Kind of like it’s saying that everything will be ok if you believe.
I've watched all the songs. All the compositions. It's this one. This one is the best. And the bar is really high.
Even throughout the craziest parts of this solo, his sense of melody is just insane
Why the hell aren’t these RUclips bass players in bands. Like what the hell.

solo bass is totally different that band bass, bass is usually a supporting instrument in a band, no way they play anything even remotely close to this complex lol
LittlePrince yeah, there’s a cartoon about drummers, with the first guy playing triplets and 5/8 time and an intricate rhythm. The guy watching says, “You’re amazing.” The next guy plays a boring but solid 4/4 rhythm. The guy watching says, “You’re hired.”

All the people on here like “Why you using pick, not epic” keep watching he slaps and fingerpicks, its all just different techniques to vary your skill level, sound and sharpness, let the man do his thing because clearly he knows more than you
If it doesn't go with what they've been told is the one and only true way to play, they hate on it.

1 year later this is still a banger
Nice pfp :)
One of my favorite things about this video is looking back every few months and seeing comments from people who just heard it for the first time and had their minds blown.
Does anyone get that nostalgic feeling in their stomach when listening to this? I can't even explain it? Damn you are super talented!! Well done 👍
Yes, reminds me of childhood even though I didn't listen to anything like this.
I *think* that's due to the mode he's chosen.
Talk of modes often scares people off, but there's really one thing about them worth knowing: each one seems to very easily convey one or more specific feelings, like nostalgia?
Ionian often sounds sentimental, Phryggian sounds mysteriously exotic (to Western ears) etc etc.
I found just applying the basics of that concept helped write stuff that followed my ideas better
✌
Did not even know a lever tuning system like that existsed. Totally wild. I remember back in my high school days when the timpani had a foot pedal to tune stuff on the fly

It's like if Andy McKee was playing bass.
Major, major props.
Watch some Michael Manring, the counterpoint to Michael Hedges (the real inspiration for Andy McKee).
Glenn Saunders I followed your suggestions and was interested in these artists. I can certainly see where some of their pioneering sound had an influence on these artists but I would say these two have both done enough to differentiate their sound beyond mimicry. McKee adds a percussive element that is missing in Hedges work and the liveliness brought by Berthoud is more engaging than Manring’s very contemplative licks. All are talented, without question, and this comment is not meant to detract from any artist.
you would like Stu Hamm. It sounds like hes a major influence on charles
Andy McKee is exactly who I thought of when I heard this
Stunning. Never realised a bass could sound like that. Heavenly, indeed.
They're piccolo strings, so he's kinda cheating. Great song nonetheless.
