- The Punjabi language is the 10th largest language by a number of speakers in the world. The origin of the Punjabi language is really a less explored area in literature and the beginning of the language is unclear. According to the most quoted reference, It is believed that Punjabi was originated from Prakrit or Sanskrit language back in the 7th century. It matured in the 10th century and became literary rich in the 12-13th century. The languages of power in the subcontinent were Persian, Arabic. Punjabi was the language of common men. According to a book written by Dr. Jaspal Singh Mayel, The language of Harrapan could be Punjabi. He believes that Punjabi is 5500 years old.

I can read, write and speak Punjabi. I studied punjab since my childhood till 12th. I gained maximum marks in Punjabi as compared to other subjects because Punjabi is my mother tongue. But I am sad that in Pakistan there is no recognition for Punjabi language. Proud to be punjabi
It is indeed sad; it is still the language of the masses in Lehnda Punjab. Spoken far and wide. But the elites with their weird identity crisises have tried to displace local (real) languages with Urdu (10% of the pop. at the time of Partition in Pakistan spoke it as a mother tongue). Go back just a few decades and there were Punjabi news channels, papers, drama serials and wider media in Pak Punjab. Everyone who is Punjabi whether charda or lehnda - speak it with pride!
Those who say punjabi is a badtmeej language,they are accepting that their forefathers were badtmeej. They must be ashamed of it.

Punjabi language is derived from Prakrit language and Prakrit language is derived from Vedic Sanskrit.
I can read and write and Gurmukhi punjabi and my 5 yr ol nephew is also learning 35 akhri and not just this am also leraning shahukhi hopefully we will manage to tapp in our new genration so in coming future we can hope for the best for coming generations to love our culture and be pride of our roots .

shahmukhi is basically farsi script with punjabi boli, but gurmukhi is origional script made
@@ਗੁਰਸਿਮਰਸਿੰਘ don't confuse Punjabi with the scripts. Punjabi is a language written in two scripts. East Punjab has Gurmukhi and the west has Shahmukhi.
Before that we had the Brahmi , Shards Takri and Lande scripts.
And please don't forget the writings by the Nath sect of Hindu sadhus in the 8th century AD. In our Punjabi 1200 hundred years ago!!!
