A well-researched and comprehensive video that touched upon some of the very questions I have grappled with when thinking of the future of languages. As a Tuluva Mumbaikar, I am aware of the many layers of complexity involved in the whole language/ dialect debate and how language is as much (if not more) about cultural identity than mere communication.

Beautiful and unbiased presentation, a bit concerning that Hindi wiped away so many smaller languages and their culture is lost forever. The future generations may never know what their forefathers spoke 😮
I'm a guy with Hindi as my Mother tongue but I respect all the languages there is no need to impose Hindi on other states. Since they have their own languages which have been preserved for more than a millennium, but hating on people just because they speak Hindi is not okay ! Jai Hind 💪
It is not hating hindi speakers, it is the fighting against, mistaken as hate, the people who wants to impose hindi on the rest of non-hindi citizens. Without english, there would have been no India as it exists now. It is the British who occupied various princely territories and formed India. We inherited that in the early forties but had to part with some land for Muslims, hindu- muslim conflicts. Imposing of majority ethnic, religious, lingual force on non hindi speaking population will sure repeat 1947. Nobody wants that but the hindi zealots may make it happen. Remember the cause of creation of Bangla Desh and break up of USSR. Let wisdom rule over language fanaticism.

@@dontbeafraidimhere5421 You have made many valid points. Even countries like China, which had banned English during their Cultural Revolution, are now realising their folly, and have made the study of English compulsory in all their schools. But the biggest reason why we need to continue with English, alongside Hindi, is that it is the only "neutral" language which binds North India with South India. This is a fact of modern Indian history, and the sooner we accept it, the better.

This is because of your attitude that you think people who speak local are illiterate. You are proud to speak English than any other language. You cannot say that Hindi destroyed everything. Hindi is very close to northern and mid India languages.
Great content. Unbiased, thoroughly researched and provides a clear picture of the history and current status of languages in India. Though I don't understand Hindi fluently, I could understand the content through images and data on screen. Ironically, I have a request. Fantastic video! 1) look at movies of Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam cinema: songs feature native Dravidian words as well as 🚩Sanskrit ones like प्रेम, प्राण, हृदय, समय, भोजनम, धन्यवदाम 2) now, look at the 'Hindi' industry of Bollywood: songs feature 🇵🇰Urdu words like Ishq, Aashiqui, Mohabbat, Mehboob, Khuda, Rab, Waqt, Wajood, Izzat, Ijazat, Hifazat, Rishta, Zindagi... But still, BJP/ RSS want to make हिन्दी as National Language over 1000s year old తెలుగు, தமிழ், ಕನ್ನಡ, മലയാളം languages. 🤔
It's not about BJP. It is central government's policy overall. Never forget that it was congress which tried to make Hindi the only official language of India. They inserted a clause in the constitution which makes it the central goverment's liability to promote Hindi.
Every government is mandated to make Hindi as national language. Even if a PM from south is elected as in case of Devegowda or Narsimha Rao or anyone in future, he will promote Hindi. It has nothing to do with BJP, RSS. A central government will need a medium to connect to all as it can't publish every notification in 1600+ language. Even if anti-hindi DMK occupies center it will start promoting Hindi as it will need to communicate with northern/NE/Bengali/Gujarati people. Even they will have to bring a common language. You can't end the concept of link language. I do understood mother tounge is important and it's duty of its native speakers to protect it and pass on to next generation. But when you are living in a such a big country a link language will be needed. It might be anyone English, Hindi or anyone else. BTW, those chauvinist who thinks that only Hindi will destroy their mother tounge and not English should learn about English History and how many languages it has killed to become so big. The rise and fall of language is a natural phenomenon. It is bound to happen and nothing can stop it. We can only pass our mother tounge to next generation and hope that it goes on till it becomes more popular. No need to hate other languages. PS : I am not a native Hindi /English speaker but could connect to you all only because we all were watching a Hindi language video and commenting in English language while our mother tounge is different.

Keep it up bro, Bengali as a language is more beautiful than Hindi, Bengali script may be a derivative of devanagiri but it definitely looks more beautiful and artistic with its sharp edges, also, our national anthem is in Bengali not in Hindi, don't let anyone force you to speak any language against your wishes, take it from a proud Tamilian who does not like to be forced to learn any language and yet is a polyglot blessed of the Lord Jesus Christ for His glory. ;)
I'm from Tamilnadu. India is a country in diversity. We should cherish every language available here. We should give priority to our mother tongue first. If you can't read, write and excel in your mother tongue but you know third language means, It is really shame. Mother tongue is like mother, Giving food to others letting your mother to starve is a sin.
You are right brother , even I am not in favour of forcing Hindi on people who have different mother tongue but we need a connecting language that is not foriegn (like I am using English now 😅) , would you agree if that connecting language is Sanskrit ?

Hi bhaiya, I loved the video.. I am from Dharwad, Karnataka and can speak 3 languages Kannada Hindi and English and can understand 6 languages, kannada hindi and english (completely) and Marathi, Telugu and German( partially) And here in our school hindi is complousary as 3rd language Until 8th standard and then there is a choice between kannada and hindi... Here we almost watch hindi content in youtube along with other languages but the reason of protests against it that the fear of loosing our regional languages, jobs , and status... So we are protecting our languages which is right but we don't hate hindi until someone insults or disrespects our languages, in my opinion there should be no national language and if the govt. Want to promote hindi they must ensure not to harm, disrespect the regional languages and promote them as well, We must protect and continue the diversity of languages as other countries like Switzerland does.... The conclusion is that we personally love hindi and north India💙 but want to protect and conserve our native languages which absolutely correct....
Im a native हिन्दी speaker but I respect and doesn't promote the imposition of major language to other minor languages. Our culture is diverse and should be conserved forever ❤ Promotion should not contains harm to any other community. Peace to everyone 🙏 Vande Matram 🇮🇳

@@Amoghavarsha. actually kerala has many type of people. Different people have different identity. Most Christians in kerala are not recently converted like rest of India. The first converts were Brahmins who mixed with Syrian migrants around 100-300 AD. After that many Christians from Arabian peninsula migrated and settled in kerala before the begining of Islam. All these Christians consider them different from the Christians who converted during colonial period. The muslims of kerala are Arab traders who mixed with local population (Aryans and Dravidian) and settled in kerala. So they also have a different identity. Among the hindu population 30 percentage are Nairs. They are Aryans and they consider sanskrit and Malayalam as their language. The Brahmins and Nairs mixed sanskrit with local dravidian and Malayalam was formed. Ezhava community is about 50 percentage of Hindu population. This is the fault of Indian finding father. Never choose the majority language/biggest language as lingua franca because it will cause jealousy and the sense of favoritism towards one language. Indonesia and Pakistan are the only successful countries to unite all the ethnics with one language because they chose small/minor language as lingua franca. Indonesia chose Malay instead of Javanese, Pakistan chose Urdu instead of Pashto

Great Work!! This video is a gem. ❤ As a Bengali, I never suppot Hindi imposition. ❌ Yes I know Hindi and English because it's my choice. But government can't make it obligatory! That will result in huge protests for sure. Also, one thing I thought worth mentioning, Bengali and Punjabi was the most important language while our freedom struggle because most of the freedom fighters were from Bengal and Punjab. If you go to Cellular jail in Andaman (kala pani k uss paar) you will find that most of the freedom fighter prisoners were Bengali and Punjabi. Also, Indian National Anthem is in "Tatsama Bengali" language close to Sanskrit. Even, "Vande mataram" was written by a great Bengalee man Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay! The only Nobel Prize in literature in whole India is a Rabindranath Tagore. 🏆 Also, I know every other Indian languages including the beautiful south Indian languages have their own pride and rich history. So, imposing Hindi would serve as the last nail to the coffin ⚰️ of Indian Unity in Diversity. Never try to impose Hindi on someone.
Bro every state contributed towards independence movement. Maharashtra UP and Rajasthan too had their fair share. The first independence movement started in UP which was indigenous. FYI If there were no Marathas India would no longer exist as a Hindu country. In short many communities contributed towards Independence which include Bengalis and Punjabis. In the end NS role could have been bigger than others to attain independence.
Bengali Communist Bhadralok have Spoken. You should thank this nation for What narrow Strip of former Bengal which still Exist. It was Bengali-Bhadralok Communists who started Naxalism. You forgot About all Marathi and other Freedom fighters. Stop Crying nobody is imposing Sh*t. Bihar and UP are your neighbouring states. You wrote this in English. Just like that people are Learning Hindi. Almost 60%-70% people can understand Hindi all over India.
@@Trials_By_Errors I expect you read my comment again carefully. No, I didn't forget anything regarding other freedom fighters from other states. I just said that freedom fighters from Bengal and Punjab are large in number. And Bengali language had an important role in India's freedom too. That's it. And yes I already mentioned I understand Hindi because it is a choice. But you can't make it obligatory to learn Hindi in other language areas. Don't forget, all languages are local languages: Hindi is also a local language for non-hindi speakers.
This is absolutely a super quality content. I am from Bangladesh and very proud Bengali. I can't speak Hindi....but I can understand it. Bangladesh was created from Language movement and we know very well how painful a foreign language imposition can be.

Being from Central Uttar Pradesh l can speak Hindi,English, Awadhi, Braj and Bundelkhandi. My mother tongue is Awadhi and we use Hindi and English for official purpose. l love Hindi the most coz unlike other languages Hindi is the confluence of myriads of dialects which binds all the north Indians together. Hindi is comparatively the most similar language to every north Indian language and thus even the local people can understand it. Thus we do not have to face communication issues in the entire north Indian states.Hindi is not killing our local languages or dialects at all, in fact we are taught some parts of Braj and Awadhi in Hindi literature! Hindi connects us and doesn't divide us. However I don't support imposition of Hindi upon those who are unwilling to learn it, particularly South Indians who have totally distinct linguistic roots. JAI HIND🇮🇳

Excellent/उत्तम explanation. As a unifying force, I believe Khari Boli Hindi should be the official language but only for union matters. State governments can continue to use languages in their states for official work. Meanwhile, smaller languages can be preserved through their promotion on the district level. This could solve both the problem of unifying diverse elements at the national level and preserving diversity at the regional level.

Official language status is also nominal. De facto many other languages are also officially used. eg. Marathi is the sole official language of Maharashtra. Not Hindi, not English. But in practice Govt. of Maharashtra and the various Municipal Corporations under it also utilise English, and to a lesser extent Hindi. In Ulhasnagar, all signboards are written in English and Sindhi (Persian script) because of the high Sindhi population there. Govt. also runs Kannada language schools in Kannada villages in Solapur and Kolhapur districts. It is the responsibility of the government to adapt to it citizens and provide services in their language. Only the central government has shown some level of pigheadedness when it comes to langauge.
Please, Maharashtra govt is worse. They are forcing private establishments to put up signboards in Marathi. If you want to make language adaptable, you need to let businesses decide for themselves - they will only succeed if they put the language used commonly by that locals in that area. So whatever language they choose without force is automatically the correct one. In Mumbai they used English for so long, so clearly that was not a problem. But govt forced Marathi. They pretend Mumbai is not multiethnic and impose Marathi and Marathi nationalism constantly, with inflammatory historical claims

Even countries like China, which had banned English during their Cultural Revolution, are now realising their folly, and have made the study of English compulsory in all their schools. The problem with people like you is that you consider Urdu as Pakistani, despite the fact that URDU is an Indian language.

A well-researched video and explained in simple terms.
I think local language should be prompted and our Studies can be in English, like studying content in English with the help of local language. In my case English and Marwari, we can simultaneously read them.
