- Do Mormons swear? Kwaku and Ian dive into the topic of whether swearing and profanity is okay or not.
Kwaku says that cussing can be funny at times but shouldn’t be done often and absolutely shouldn’t be done in a derogatory way.
Kwaku says that when he is back home in Texas he tries not to curse very much. He does this because he knows that his non-Mormon watch how he acts and speaks as a member of the LDS Church.
Ian mentions that the scriptures do say that we should have good language and that we should refrain from swearing as best as we can. He says that saying swear words and being profane isn’t what a worth priesthood holder should do and that we should do our best to not swear.
What do you think? Is it okay to swear or should we try to avoid saying bad words together? Comment below and tell us your thoughts.

Thanks for doing this episode!! It was so cool to hear your guys' opinions on it! :D
Thanks for all your videos! It's so fun and great to get online and have nice, calm, spiritual discussions. It's awesome to learn and to be a part of a wonderful community like this :D
"i love the Irish, best leprechauns" lol too funny
you guys should really do a podcast
A persons language expresses their beliefs, thoughts, intelligence, knowledge, and focus, so what does it say when any of our language is profane. The only truly sinful language is taking the Lords Name in Vain, but other profane language may be expressing other areas for correction.
There’s multiple answers for that. I’ve heard that taking the lords name in vain is doing evil and horrific acts in gods name, but I’ve also heard that Gods name is sacred. Therefore, one must use said name/names in said fashion.
@Jeff Carlin Well, it's exactly like Luke says. It expresses out beliefs. Us talking isnt merely "noises," it's communication. Each word we have had _meaning_ , and it reflects, put simply, who we are. The only thing I disagree with Luke about is the intelligence part, but everything else is accurate.
Not taking His name in vain and being respectful to Him also keeps us humble. Everything He commands us to do and anything He does at all in relation to us is for _our_ benefit. It's not that He's sensitive, He can more than handle it (for lack of better words). He just wants us to be happy, and we can't be without Him and His spirit. However His spirit cannot dwell on filth and vulgarness.
@Jeff Carlin Like I said, He can shrug it off. His commandments aren't for Him it's for _us_ . Meaning for _our_ benefit. And our Father isn't anything magical or supernatural.
@Jeff Carlin @Jeff Carlin You're taking a small part of the gospel and presenting it as the whole thing. One page in the Bible. The Ten Commandments does not and can not represent the fullness of His doctrine. The thing about the Old Testament and New Testament is that while it's a holy volume of scripture, it does not contain the full gospel either, and there's multiple reasons for that (for example, the Bible refers to at least 40 lost books). The reason that happened at all was because of the apostasy. All of the apostles were killed and the gospel was taken of the earth. Every one took parts of the gospel, many partial truths and tried to figure out the rest of it (which is why there are so many religions). However, through lots of divine inspiration, the fullness of the gospel was _restored_ on the earth, thankfully because many people wanted and needed it badly. And now we do have the full doctrine. Now we have all those commandments you mentioned directly from Jesus, even if it's not directly mentioned in that specific list that Moses delivered to the Egyptians.
John 10:34
Cussing is also different depending on the country, I'm in New Zealand this summer and working in the Church office building. People here say "damn" and "hell" all the time. I've even heard it from the stand! It's different depending on your culture.
We love these guys, darn it!! Cheers, cherished brothers!
I’ve been taught that foul language becomes foul once you use the word outside of its original meaning. Aside for suggestive swear words which are wrong in any context for me, when referring to a donkey or a female dog, the corresponding word doesn’t effect me as much as it would if someone were to use it to put someone else down or to speak crudely. As a general rule of thumb for myself though, I don’t use those words at all if I don’t absolutely have to. The environment I was raised in kinda brainwashed me to be uncomfortable around that kind of language I suppose. Haha.
This makes a lot of sense, and I agree that if there’s an alternate word that means the same thing that isn’t considered a swear word, why not use it
I remember this one time when i was like recently baptized the elders & i were having a conversation and a curse word slipped out and I was SO EMBARRASSED and just kept apologizing and the Elders just laughed. It was pretty funny after i went over what just happened. Also, they weren't like yOU TERRIBLE PERSON and shunned me. They were like you're ok dude it happens.
Phoenix Torres i love this story! A lot of people think that elders are these judgmental people but they are actually really nice!
That's the problem right there...shame based it worked on you eh
How did it slip out- and let's hope it wasn't a really bad word!
Great Vid! Keep them coming.
Almost had me there- when you said folks- I thought I heard the f word- good thing I checked a few times, and used the spell checker!😁
A good rule of thumb is to use language you think that allows the Spirit alongside you, exactly where you are
Edit: Well, that's _my_ rule of thumb. Honestly I think you should do what you really believe to be right and okay. We don't need to draw any specific organized lines.
Good to hear more opinions on this topic. In high school, I just got used to hearing the nonstop and constant use of profanity. Other than the profanity, it is a good high school experience. It just doesn't catch me off guard anymore. It is just normal in that setting, if I heard it in church or at home, that is a different story. I do agree that is matters what the meaning behind it is. In high school, I think it is just typical high school vocabulary that isn't supposed to have bad intent. Anyway, great video.
We love you guys💗💗💗
Personally, what I think is kinda weird about the church is we always talk about "oh, this is where we need to be", but we don't talk about what happens when you mess up as much, and we do talk about how to get where we need to be, but not as much as just talking about where we need to be spiritually. The most important thing i just to improve. Even if that just means removing S#!t from your vocabulary and just starting with that, EVEN if you use other words too. Just improvement is what matters. None of us will be perfect without Christ. We are here to grow, so grow. Don't stress about whether this is entirely right or wrong. Learn through the spirit and grow.
This episode totally confused me because I couldn’t tell when you were serious or if you were talking about saying the actual cuss word or the replacement word because you couldn’t say the actual word😂😂
LDS are not supposed to cuss or swear, but it happens. I used to swear like a drunken sailor before I joined the church and have reduced that by 99%. So if I can do it, anyone can. My favorite example was from a woman who was holier than thou and would shoot her mouth off over their lack of worthiness. I later found out her, her husband and kids all swear at home. One day she's late for sacrament and I'm minding the door. She's yelling at her kids and husband to hurry up. She proceeds to tell her family they are ruining her day while she's trying to feel the #*$#@#% spirit!
I swear (not intended) I saw this video several days ago... Why does it say this just came out today?
Purple Poet11 I wanted to watch it again a few days ago but it wasn't on RUclips anymore. I assume they had some complications and had to take it down and reupload.
Honestly, we wanted to refine the original edit. Thanks for being super patient with us, guys. Thanks for watching and commenting. Y'all are the reason the show is still alive and well!
I grew up around Catholics and I never got that impression.
I have noticed this defense with others. When you don't know how defend yourself just call the other fellow a liar. The fact is I grew up back east and there were plenty of Catholics. One of my best friends was a good Catholic but there were others that were not good Catholics. It never even crossed my mind not to do something because the Catholics don't do. I think your statement is more wishful thinking on your part than anything else.
Jim Caponzi Do you just spend all your time watching these videos and spreading Mormon hate based on your opinions and the possibly limited information you have?
Before I got baptize I use to curse a lot but after I got baptize i feel it is wrong to to say swear word because we are disciples of God and this is the wrong way to represent him.
That's my opinion
No that's not an opinion, that's a fact- there's no disagreeing or doubting, SWEARING is wrong and a sin period.
You know, it also matters about your environment. If you are in church, I would avoid all forms of cussing I would say unless it's necessary, but around atheists who swear themselves, it may be more appropriate/not as much of a sin if used to amplify something good, or even when used neutrally. I do agree though, all swearing that is negative is sin (Ephesians 4:29)
No swearing is swearing, even if you talk to an atheist who swears, you're still sinning, NO SWEARING means NO SWEARING under any circumstances.
@@pauljohnson6019 it depends on the Spirit
For you you may be lead to avoid all forms of swearing
But for others, swearing to amplify something good is great
I stopped swearing years ago and I ask for forgiveness if something slips...I take it very seriously but I know everyone has a different opinion on what swearing is.
The word "cuss" sounds like a cuss word to me in this video
The terms "swearing", "cursing", "cussing" , " profanity", etc. are used synonymously, but they should actually be differentiated.
Why is it every mormon I know swore around me? "JC"..the entire name ..and "Christ" in a grevious way were VERY popular. Never an alcoholic drink, never coffee, but something about swearing, they either grew up speaking like that or just emptied out their swears on me. It maybe just a regional thing as well since the only Mormons I know were from Utah and maybe in Utah people swear more than in the South. I am sensitive to words that have to do with eternal doom, but not sensitive on the vulgar carnal bodily swear words, although this is not something I strive for nor promote but hope that a man can be swear-free day to day.
If I wouldn't feel comfortable with children using certain words (culturally defined and agreed-upon swear words), then I wouldn't be comfortable using them myself, even out of their presence. Just like I don't think it's ok to use racial/sexist/religious derogatory words even if I'm not using them in front of the people (races/sexes/believers) at whom the derogatory words are aimed or semantically about. Because it changes the way you think, and thoughts really do have a way of seeping into actions or desensitising us to sacred or other important things like respecting others and ourselves, including our bodies-- from which most swear words are degradingly derived.
Matthew 5: 34 - 37
34 But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God’s throne:
35 Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King.
36 Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black.
37 But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.
3 Nephi 12: 34 - 37 says exactly the same thing.
I agree with Ian. I don’t think any swearing should be allowed (he says this around 7:40) and it really isn’t productive and only has the ability to drive the spirit AWAY. The spirit will never join you by using swear words. And I also don’t think a worthy priesthood holder is one that swears... it feels unclean and unpure.
I agree but saying some words should not be allowed is way to controlling and against peoples freedom of speech and people free will...
@@ATD1990 you can do whatever you want, just don’t forget that you chose to represent Jesus Christ when you got baptized in His church.
@@melepearl7916 all im saying is its wrong to control peoples speech or to want to... That dosent mean I speak inappropriately... Are you assuming I do because of my comment? I also do not believe in the lds church but in god, jesus christ, and the bible..
@@ATD1990 Of course you have the free will to speak how you want, the point is swearing is WRONG and a SIN, that's why you have acronyms to use instead of the actual swear words, if you must use them, which is considered less severe, and an alternate way out.
@@pauljohnson6019 whatever word you chose to use it's swearing doesn't make it any worse or better
I am new to this channel and have a very random question. Is the fish in the bowl on the bottom left corner of the screen real or photoshop?
Real! A live goldfish
Kwaku El it's going to be a sad day when it dies
Ian, you look exactly like Idubbbz. Especially when you where your glasses!!!! AND YOUR NAME IS ALSO IAN!!!!!!!
Daniel Norton I was thinking the same thing!
Daniel Norton my husband is named Ian
What if he's secretly iDubbbz? It's fun to think about
It's so weird to see so much "Greetings, Fellow Kids!" energy coming from people so young...
Now my son thinks it’s ok to swear. Please be careful with what you say.
Dood i try not too, but sometimes I say cusswords in my head. I never do in real life. But my head it like a tornado, sometimes i am just realy mad for some reason and i say a cussword in my head. Imma try to not do that
I'm LDS and I'm going to be in a short film that has me say curse words like "damn" and the S word. Nothing saying God's name in vein, but how would the church react?
Would you cuss in front of the Savior?
one thing I think of when I think of swearing. swear works are words that are meant or do hurt someone. even if your you're not meaning too.
I agree but also when using a swear word yes you could be using it to refer to the actual meaning then i don’t think that it’s the worst thing you could do.
I often interpret "af" as "as foretold"
Another discipline!!!
I find I don't swear as much since I converted.
You shouldn't cuss at all- 12 years 5 months and counting master agrees with you!
This is clearly all personal opinion ....
Its my opinion that there's always something you can say to relay the thing you're trying to say without cussing. I'll admit to having a cussing problem in the past, but the more I try to not cuss the better I feel, and the more I feel like I can have the spirit with me. I think it's about attitude as well. "it's fine" can be a dangerous statement. the same can be said about too-intemate kissing/touching with a partner out of marriage, or with drinking coffee or having just a little alcohol on holidays or special events. It's my believe that if you are going to follow the prophet and Jesus Christ, you should try to do it fully without compromise.
Jim Caponzi No one is perfect. So, therefore no one should be judging Right?
Nobody ever takes using the Lords name like that as a cussword. I think its pretty much a cuss word for sure.
“Why do you always fart after we get in the car?”
“Elder! Do not use that word (fart)! It’s very offensive to me”
Hit like if you get that reference. 😁
It's a rude word, that can be considered offensive, but it's not a swear word.
I think it's okay to swear (not use the Lord's name in vain) unless it's directed at another person.
Negative Nancy! Lol😂
3 Nephi 12:34-37
I find myself swearing more when I'm in the presence of my cousins and their friends but hardly any when I'm with my mom or my aunt I believe it is based greatly on how you are raised and who you hang around I don't curse at school or at church (definitely not at church) but I curse alot with my friends
Edit: I'm also from Texas kuaku
Riley Brantley what curse words do you use with your friends?
@@xRebx_ Well I hope you're not setting a trap for him, but yeah let him answer!
@@pauljohnson6019😂😂😂
I once was at Young Womans activities and I was gonna say "Look at my shirt!" But my toung didnt work and I said "look at my ****" XD XD everyone was lauphing and i was both lauphing and crying, but making sure it sounded like just lauphing
Brigham Young used to swear like a sailor. He even used GD. Btw God’s name is Yahweh, so GD isn’t taking the Lord’s name in vain.
The c word is too far. Judge the situation.
Eh, it's perfectly acceptable in erotic fiction, I'd say.
I don’t cuss at all but it happens on accident and you have to repent
If it happens by accident it means you're not totally free, and yes, you have to repent until you're totally free.
dopaf!
The c word Crap
You Mormons are good at back biting
i hope that mansplaining bit at the end was a joke. i really hate that word. very sexist if you ask me
Gary Cooper totally a joke. we got you:)
