    Believe it or not, beards were largely a cultural norm in the US in the 1800s... being clean-shaven was considered a sign of wealth because a decent shave was like a good haircut: you needed to go to the barber for it. Some men owned shaving implements, but by and large most did not. Imagine paying for a haircut every day... that's what it was like. So beards were pretty acceptable. Once Gillette came out with an affordable disposable razor in 1903, the association of "clean shaven" = "wealth" really helped spur a trend toward men shaving in order to look respectable. If you'll look at the pictures/paintings of the leaders of the church, you'll notice right around 1900 beards pretty much went away.
    I think this discussion really does illustrate well the enmeshing of Utah Mormon culture with what some consider some kind of unofficial doctrine. In California where I grew up, I cannot think of a single male ward or stake church leader who had facial hair. In Texas, facial hair among church leaders is not the norm, but not so uncommon that anyone notices or thinks it's weird when you look up in the stand. I personally have gone with a perpetual 5 o'clock shadow as my skin breaks out horribly when I use a razor. I just use beard clippers with no guard. I looks like I shave, but I don't. And it works for me.

    I live in the great state of Alaska. I also had the honor of health building our Temple here, was in the same room with President Hinckley as he gave the dedicatory prayer. patriarch Frank Millimun gave the opening prayer. I have a beard, it is well-kept and quite a few people have complimented me on it. Although for some funny and strange reason temple workers are not to have facial hair. Same with stake presidency & Bishoprics

    How does a college's honor code (that is owned by a church) somehow represent the entire church? That's like saying that because BYU-I doesn't allow you to wear flip flops on campus that the whole church can't wear flip flops. And using your same logic, because the prophet is in charge of BYU-I than the whole church can't wear flip flops. This is a ridiculous episode and even more ridiculous logic. Sorry guys, I am not a fan. 😟 And because I'm a member of this church I am very concerned with how your content may have unintended, negative consequences.

    • @Old_and_Wise
      @Old_and_Wise 7 лет назад +4

      I don't believe they ever said the college's honor code applies to the entire church. Members are free to grow and wear facial hair as they please.

    • @daniellecalder5193
      @daniellecalder5193 7 лет назад +5

      You're right, they never said it. I am pointing out how the logic and examples used in this video are not only untrue but are a logical fallacy. Example: because they implied that BYU's honor code applies to the whole church (since the prophet is in charge of BYU and the prophet is in charge of the church). The prophet is also in charge of BYU-I so with their logic the WHOLE church wouldn't be able to wear flip flops. Get it? Not only is this untrue, but their reasoning is ridiculous. A church school's honor code does not apply to all church members and the girl said that it did. This is a perfect example of the unintended consequences behind their episodes. You can't pick and choose which parts of the honor code apply to ALL of the church, if you say that one policy does you imply that the rest do as well.

    • @Old_and_Wise
      @Old_and_Wise 7 лет назад +2

      Ummm...they conclude their entire episode (starting at 7:31 to the end) by saying grow a beard if you want to. They never imply the BYU honor code applies to the whole church. Not trying to debate with you - just trying to help clarify. When Shelley was talking about the prophet, she was specifically talking about BYU students and the Honor Code they (the students) follow while attending BYU - and that the students should follow the BYU honor code because as she puts it "the prophet signed off on it". She concludes that if you (as a BYU student) don't want to follow the honor code at BYU and would rather grow a beard, then go to a different school. I rewatched the episode just to make sure this was the case. They even clarify they're only specifically talking about BYU students at 3:34. Seems pretty clear to me. Hope that helps!

    So wait, beards are gross according to her. Yet, Christ was the one who designed our bodies. Christ gave us the ability to grow beards and Christ makes no mistakes. So you're saying Christ made a mistake making it possible for men to grow beards?? Your move.

    • @ianforsyth7804
      @ianforsyth7804 7 лет назад +8

      First off, nice one.
      She can think beards are gross and still believe Christ was perfect. You are proposing a false dilemma fallacy. Thinking something is gross doesn't mean it is a mistake. For example, I might think Indian food with a curry taste is gross, but I don't think they made a mistake. It's just their culinary preference and culture that influenced the flavor. My opinion doesn't determine the goodness of the food. It's just my perception. Shelley's perception of beards is negative, but that doesn't mean her perception of Christ is negative. I don't know about you, but I worship the Savior and not the Savior's beard.

    When I started my job as a professor at BYU, it broke my heart to hear there was no hope in me getting a beard card. With tears in my eyes I shaved. In my office, I then posted, behind my computer monitor, a meme from the cartoon "Dexter's Laboratory" when they say "It doesn't matter if you have the beard on the outside, all that matters is that you have it on the inside." While I never thought anyone could entice me away from BYU, I got recruited away 10 years ago. My face has never been clean-shaven since.

    You three are so funny. And I agree with Shelly. Beards are dirty and smelly and cool women don't like them. They are disgusting, along with mustaches. Imagine a man with a mustached who has to blow his nose. Gross!
