And it was actually mentioned they were preparing to replace him (Howard) a while ago cause of the questions regarding his health. And also that Jesse didnt want to join out of fear that fans would reject him. But as they made it known that Howard wouldnt continue he pretty much gave it a shot in auditions.
The best long and short of the history I can come up with is: Jesse waa the original singer, he had a vocal injury and had to take a break. Howard came in and stayed with KSE for a looooooong time, then had issues with Diabetes so he had to retire for a while, in which time Jesse came back and Howard was doing Light the Torch stuff, then this song and video happened. Jesse is still lead singer currently afaik, but they perform this song live together to this day. It's a much better love story than Twilight and this video never fails to make me smile 🥹

Howard had major health issues with his diabetes and the split was amicable because Howard's health needed to be the priority. Since then he has lost a ton of weight and slimmed back down to the monster of a man we know and love.
