Finally, after all these years, the water strider’s elusiveness is finally getting recognition, I spent literal weeks just trying to get one to spawn for my bestiary let alone a gold one
I had to make a spawn arena and even use journey mode buffs just to get them to spawn on a normal basis, not to mentions the golden ones!

@Reuben Pontoh I’ve never seen a golden one in a natural setting, so I have no idea. Even when using the arena I mentioned and increased spawn rates, it took quite some time.

I legit didn't even know Seahorse's exist, and I spend a lot of time in the ocean because it's my favorite biome. Also, it's a lot easier to not cut down trees if you aren't using *the best axe in the game*

@@uwufemboy5683 that has no correlation to what He's saying, it's pretty easy to make a weak axe and use it if your shaking trees specifically
A small tip for those wanting to add gold critters to your duplication menu in journey mode: catch one, and put it in a bottle or terrarium, then research the one of those it takes to unlock duplication. Then go to your local shimmer pool and toss in a few of those terrariums. It will give you an empty terrarium and the gold critter every time
you are a god. i owe you my life.
This also works with prismatic lacewings if you are very impatient with catching them or if you have trouble getting a second or third to spawn

A problem with golden critters is that normal enemies can kill them when you find them, making golden critters even more painful to get

There's an item that makes critters unable to be killed while it's in your inventory.

Yeah, I was lucky to find the golden seahorse not killed during a blood moon. Then the martians came....

I actually got the Eucalypt sap on my first day in my world and thought "wow I never knew you can get a pet in the first day" and then after googling the chance I never knew it was pretty rare

i remember having an arkaless, wait was that how you spell it or? anyways i had one of those swords you get from sword shines that were not enchanted sword i put it in a world i named flying islands then forgot about it (this was before journey's end mind you) then cam back to terraria and deleted worlds i haven't done anything in when i loaded up floating islands i had forgotten i made my base in the sky on a man made floating island and deleted the world after leaving it... :(

I think the rune wizard's spawn chance is increased when you are close to natural gem caves. So that may help a bit with the spawn rate, but not a lot.
I didn't know the Eucalyptus Sap was such a rare thing, because I got it on my first terraria playthrough right at the beginning, when I was chopping trees for wood. Now I am glad that I have it and I don't have to farm for it
The Universal Pylon is incredibly useful for travel IMHO. We could use some more Pylons in the base game (Space Pylon and Hell Pylon may be great in particular).

No, its useless, you can build cavern town near the hell and for example mushroom town for the space if you need it

You have methods that make those obsolete. Demon Conch for going to the underworld, and the Celestial Starboard for ludicrous speeds on the vertical axis
@@helm36 actually not useless because if you have specific pylons for Hell and Space, you can place the pylons you would’ve used there in other places. Just means more fast-travel spots. What you mean is that it’s not NECESSARY, because we can use other pylons for Hell and Space. But having more would be totally fine.
I'd say the Rune Wizard banner is the rarest item in the game. This is because, unlike the golden critters or the eucalyptus sap, it cannot be obtained by luck. It is entirely possible to find a golden seahorse the very first time you visit the ocean in a world, just like how it's possible to find the eucalyptus sap on the first tree you shake. But getting the Rune Wizard banner requires defeating fifty of, arguably, the rarest enemy in the game
EDIT: Since 1.4.4, kills needed for banners are adjusted to fit enemy rarity. As such, you no longer have to kill 50 Rune Wizards for the banner, but just 10 instead

@@cardboard._ Not at all. Nymphs can spawn pretty much everywhere underground, and aren't restricted to the bottom parts of the underground, on top of just straight up having a higher spawnrate than Rune Wizards

I remember starting a new world with my cousins and finding a Eucalyptus sap from a tree that my cousin dropped but forgot, I gave it to her after we built some dressers to store our items. I never knew it was that rare, thinking it was like a fruit's drop chance
In my 6 years of playing Terraria, I think that I’ve only encountered about 15 Rune Wizards! I think they are definitely deserving of the top 3 most rare item, or perhaps higher.

Finally after two years, some one acknowledges the water striders.
Those things are a massive pain to get to spawn. Even using journey mode buffs to spawn golden ones took lots of time and a dedicated spawn arena.

also i think sock is wrong about it only spawning in jungle ponds, it can spawn in forest and desert ponds too
i made a whole map's surface into a giant pond just to catch the golden goldfish, strider and dragonfly
(honestly i think the last golden critter i got was the dragonfly)
I remember that I once started up a new playthrough and on like the second tree the sap dropped. Since I had never seen it before I checked the wiki and wished that I could have used that luck on the rod of discord. Safe to say my luck goes to axes and pets.

I remember my friend somehow didn't know that leaf and wood wands could be found in living trees, so he made worlds just to shake all the trees. He ended up with 2 eucalyptus saps.
Honorable mention: Grapes, I legit got a few mechanical boss spawners before getting grapes when i needed it, i was grinding the 1/40 item but i just could not get it, it is also dropped from derplings ( and giant flying foxes ) Which are very common jungle enemies
I didn't even know Water Striders existed! The sheer amount of detail in this game, man.. This is why I like Terraria just a bit more than Minecraft

As a console player that grinded EVERY Banner before 1.4 nymphs aren't that hard to get if you know what to do (but still a flex) that rune wizard, and Tim to an extent, are the true bastards to farm. Even took longer than the sea snail banner (update bugged out my 1st one -_-)
I think if you have a Ruby robe or a red robe from the travelling merchant i forgot its name it gives you a higher chance for Tim to spawn although I heard this in 1.3 I don't know if it still works and if it effects the rune wizard
i have an 100% everything expert mode world that i spent a while one. neither of them are hard. while farming for the rod of discord, its not that hard. I got both before the rod, and you only need 25
Got the eucalyptus sap in one of my worlds on the first tree. I was so shook that I got him I ran to the wiki to check the odds straight away. Me and my friend both were amazed of the luck
First time I saw a seahorse, only one, I caught it and immediately after a gold one popped up on my hud so I of course snagged it and caged it. Haven't seen any more since, same with water striders, only seen a few. Makes it feel even more insane I actually got one. Good thing they don't have much use
I have killed quite a few gold critters though... I recommend you have the no harm guide with you if you're hunting.

Even though it’s not an item, research completion in journey mode is by far the rarest feat. It’s an absolute nightmare to get.
There are a few items you can't obtain in Journey mode, but can still be researched, such as the carrot, bone block (unobtainable), zombie arm statue (expert/master world only). I have to get those thing via multiplayer server.

i got the eucalyptus sap on one of the first trees i cut down in my game. i just started playing terraria again after many many years, and i had no clue what it did. good to know where my rng is sitting because i got that as my 3rd item, after wood and acorns

I remember grinding for these things... That was painful. A tip for getting the gold seahorse: stay at the world border at an ocean and use a life drain to kill non-gold seahorses. Being at the world's edge (and making the camera no longer follow the player) lets you see thigs spawn on-screen.
Another thing that helped me, after some experimenting, is that they seem to have a depth limit. As far as I could tell, if the ocean gets too deep, they didn't spawn. Could be wrong, but that was my experience. Bringing the seabed up meant they were spawning for me across the ocean, and not just near the shore. Then I... set up a teleporter system. No seahorses? jump on a teleporter at the edge of the map, warp back to just out of sight of the ocean, run across the surface with any set of water walking footwear, repeat. That's what did it for me.
i actually have seen a golden seahorse one in my playthrough lol, at the tme i thought, "oh cool, a golden critter" like it had the same spawn rarity as the others lmao
I see how fast I can get a eucalyptus sap in each world as a prediction to how good the worlds luck is. My fastest time to get a eucalyptus sap is 2 trees right of of the start.

i got both the slime staff and the sap beffore, i did not think they where special at all, slime staff was neat, but sap was just stored on a chest with many other pets, now i wish i would have the slime staff still, this is because despite not liking to grind at all, i like to store 1 of each item in games, mainly weapons and armors, but sometimes, i go a bit overboard.
Remembered this video when I just randomly was excavating a mountain for dirt and saw my lifeform analyzer say a gold water strider was near, Didn't know before this but I'm def gonna keep it as a flex for my place. Also, nice video!
I had no idea the eucalyptus sap was so rare! I got it after a couple days of playing casually and shrugged it off, almost getting rid of it
I had to get all of the golden critters 3 times for a journey mode playthrough where I got every item available for duplication in vanilla Terraria, and the golden seahorse was by far the hardest item to get. Even with the 10x spawn rate available in journey it took me an absolutely absurd amount of time to find 3. Definitely the rarest item in Terraria hands down.
Damn, so i've got 3 of these in a multiplayer playthrough without realizing just how good my odds are! Have the Gold Water Strider, Gold Sea Horse and Eucalyptis Sap all Pre-Hard Mode currently.
So now its just the Rune Wizard Banner and the Universal Pylon left...
Yesterday me and my friend started a new mastermode play through and he immediately went to go chop down a tree and got the eucalyptus sap off of the first tree. I was in shock and he had no idea what i was so excited about.
on one of my very first terraria play throughs, I chopped down a tree and got a eucalyptus sap. I played through up until the queen bee with it, and then I deleted the world because I didn’t like it. I had no idea how rare it was until i watched this video lol.
I didn't even know seahorses and water striders exist. As for other things, I recognized them from a silhouette (except rune wizard banner), and the sap thing reminded me of my current sorcerer playthrough. I got the sap from the fifth tree, then I got a wand of sparking in my first chest, then I got magic mirror, Hermes boots and cloud in a bottle in three consecutive chests in the same place, but then I ran out of luck. I broke 7 shadow orbs, all of them dropped muskets. Then, when I was getting the Terraspark Boots items, I couldn't get an Aglet from any wooden chest on surface, so I decided to go fishing. I got 3 tsunamis in a bottle, 2 pairs of selfish boots, 2 pufferfish or something and 80 gold coins from crates alone without selling anything.
i got the eucalyptus sap within my first week of hardmode first time playing, thought it was just another pet thing. did some research and now he accompanies me everywhere.
I didn't realize the Rune Wizard banner was rare they spawn at an avarage pace in my world, I remember finding that banner and the Tim banner right after hitting hard mode because I was looking for a Hel Fire
As someone that has 100% researched a character in this game, most are pretty good picks, the sap isn't that rare all things considered. What should have been mentioned is the Golden Grasshopper, which a normal Grasshopper only has a 1/100 chance of spawing after cutting grass, with the added 1/400 chance of it being gold, makes it around a 1/40000 chance of appearing when cutting grass. Also unlike the other critters when in Journey mode you can try to help up the chance with either luck or spawn rates, the Grasshopper is not affected by spawn rates at all. It took me about 6 hours to find the 3 I needed to research it.
Also I would notably mention the Golden Mouse as of (I wanna say 1.3 but could have been 1.4) it is actually technically considered an enemy so as to make sure enemies don't instantly kill it. While you think this may help with finding it, it also means that the added buff of being in a town (which lowers enemy spawn rates drastically low, sometimes to nothing, but keeps critters high, great for the Gold Bunny or Bird etc.) This not only doesn't work for the mouse but actually makes it rarer, took me about 4 hours of grinding in Journey mode although I could have made it more efficient.

I got the Sugar glider as my first pet relatively quickly when I started a new character earlier this year.
Didn't know it was so rare.
I also remember getting multiple slime staffs in the old mobile version. I thought it was kind of a common drop since I got so many.
I got the sugar glider back to back playthroughs. One as Ranger, another as mage. First tree I shook had one. Both times.

A few days ago, I was cutting down trees and I got the sap without noticing at first. That was probably one of the luckiest moments I’ve had in terraria.

the hardest well-known one in my opinion is the cell phone.
The cell phone was relatively easy for me to get. Just takes time. I got it in pre hardmode (I'm still in prehardmode cause I'm a builder) Actually, the hardest thing for the cellphone for me to get was the radar. I have dups of every other item, including the fishing stuff, but not the radar, so I could make 2 or 3 more cellphones if I had the damn radar. The radar is supposed to be the easiest find too!
I always get all of the materials for the cell phone in my world excluding the fishing ones.

It's weird because on some of my recent playthroughs I got half of these without realising how rare they were.
I find the eucalyptus sap really funny because my first time trying journey mode on console, my first terrarian day on journey mode I got eucalyptus sap
One time I was using the power of plantera to cut down trees and the sap came out of the top
I guessed right all except for seahorse. And yes. I didnt knew there is seahorse. For me, I only could have thought that this thing was added by calamity or the stars above mod.

I got 5 eucalyptus saps in like under 2 hours of my first game when 1.4 came out. I used the saps in item frames which looked like blood.

on a random terraria run i was doing during a flight and layover, i got the eucalyptus sap and was like “eh this is cool ig” and then used it for a while before trashing it cus i thought it wasn’t rare. Only now am i realizing the rarity..
I found that gold seahorse one time when I was fishing and I'm like "oh that's cool", now I'm very happy
I am so shook right now my character has eucalyptus sap and I have the slime staff in the same game and I've yet to defeat a single boss except for slime king that's so crazy. I had no idea hoe rare those items were and I have both.

I'd say the rarest item is the truffle worm banner, not that it's the hardest to get, just the fact you would have to be clinically insane to do such a thing

One day I was just creating new worlds to chop down trees and get some wood for a big project of mine. The first tree I cut down dropped the Eucalyptus Sap. I didn’t knew what it was until that cute little sugar glider spawned. Anyways back in the original world I got another one.

I got eucalyptus sap pretty early in the game and didnt know what to do with it, I have 2 rune wizard robes, and I had found a gold seahorse before killing it accidentally.
I saw a golden waterstrider on the rare creatures radar and then a slime killed it I was so mad. I’ve also got the sline staff and eucalyptus sap in the same run. And two spiffo dolls in one run
Something that irks me, is on one of the VERY first trees I ever shook on the day 1.4 released, I got the eucalyptus sap, only for my game to close without saving and I’ve never seen it since.
im surprised the dirtiest dirt wasnt on this list. although i guess it does make sense since your world is guaranteed between 3-9 youd just have to go through mining up your entire world till you find one.
I remember one time I was playing calamity, the FIRST tree I chopped down dropped the eucalyptus sap. I didnt know it was THAT rare
I got that sap from the lumberjack npc from the fargos mod with the tree treasures function.
Honorable mention to “the dirtiest block”, which according To the wiki, there are only 3/6/9 in small/medium/large worlds respectively. Of course one can just create a world with a seed where the location of one is known, but if one were to try and obtain the item properly, I’d argue it’s one of the absolute rarest.

I've gotten the sugar glider twice, the universal pylon on exactly 1.4, nymph banner, pinky banner and rune wizard banner on the same world with the universal pylon but haven't seen the 2 golden critters in this list
I'm fairly new to terraria and got the eucalyptus sap after growing about 15 trees. I didnt know how rare it was and almost sold it.
I had no idea the sugar glider was so rare... first time i revisited terraria in 7 or 8 years, last year, i played with friends and i got one within an hour of playing normally, and im pretty sure we had a second one in another few hours.
I remember one day while playing terraria being like “wait wasn’t there a pet that falls from trees?” And literally on my 15 tree the eucalyptus sap fell 💀, and also you don’t have to break the tree you kinda just have to hit the trunk once or twice I think
In my previous play through I got a eucalyptus sap on my first day and I never de-equipped it the entire playthrough
i remember farming for rod of discord with my friend and we got goddamn 3 rune wizard banners and only 1 rod of discord (he took it, we've been farming for another ton of hours later and still didn't get any so we just gave up)
I didn't realise the sugar glider was so rare, holy moly. I got one my first day playing the recent update at the time 👁👄👁
I guess it should have clicked that I never saw another one but I chalked it up to me cutting down way less trees after the first few in-game days LOL
I started my master mode run a few days ago and got the eucalypt sap on my first day.. didn't know it was rare
In my Zenith seed world, I ended up killing like 15 of them before I even fought plantera. It was very annoying how much they spawned lol
I was really lucky and got sugar glider very early in the game. I didn't know how rare it was so i replaced it with spiffo (wich is also rare) because it's so cute.
the fact that I accidentaly go the Eucalyptus sap in my multiplayer world while going to mine cobblestone is so incredible
I remember getting the eucalyptus sap from a tree in my journey mode world and I was just like “is that blood?!”
I guess I am quite lucky because I got the sugar gliders in one of my earliest worlds right at the beginning. I did not know it was this rare up until now
I didn't even know there were seahorses in Terraria. Though I did get the Tree Sap without trying and without even knowing about it. I feel really lucky now.
I remember the first time I played Terraria actually knowing how to play, i was casually chopping down trees the first day I played, and I was sharing my screen with my friend who told me to get Terraria, and probably my 20th time shaking a tree gave me a eucalyptus sap. I literally had no clue it was rare at all and he was shocked at how lucky I was for getting it.
