I live in Bradford UK. It's a nightmare place full of drugs and bullying manipulative people. I've had to shut myself away from it to have any chance of surviving. An urban hermit basically. Thank God for films like this that show some honest decent and thoughtful people who recognize the horror and absurdity of contemporary life.
I am also from Bradford, I ran away from home twice as a boy to the Lake District, I wanted to live like a hermit, build a den next to Ullswater and live by fishing and stealing fruit from markets, but I was brought back home, I was only 11 years old..I got out of Bradford when I was 16 and joined the Royal Marines Band Service as a musician, left after 8 years and then studied classical guitar..I gave up all my possessions several times to leave society and play music on the street as a busker on continental Europe, settling in the Austrian mountains for periods of time and travelling through Italy, Switzerland etc..I've always had an attraction to Buddhism and visit Amaravati Buddhist Monastery in Hertfordshire regularly..so I found a way to live out my aversion to society and especially horrible Bradford lol 😮😊🙏
I'd love to know more about living as an urban hermit. I thought physical withdrawal from society, like Japan's hikikomori, was mandatory for hermit lifestyle. It must be challenging to arrest temptation and disengage from the stress and societal pressure in this age of technology.
Leave. Turn your thinking around in terms of what's possible. Even if you can only save a few thousand pounds you can fly to Asia and teach English and live really well on just a few hundred a month. Just an example. You're not limited by where you are now, only by how you think about where you are now. Design the life you want, understand there's gonna be bumps getting there then go for it. That's life. If you want to become wealthy, become wealthy. Find work that will let you grow. Educate yourself. Set goals to 'buy' the future you want. Allow yourself, your beliefs, your ways of thinking to change. Ignore your surroundings. The brain is capable of so much. It will amaze you if you keep the faith. Don't spend your life in an unhappy situation my friend. Fuck that. Just because it's where you are right now doesn't for a second mean you have to stay there. I believe in you
I am very reclusive, yet I am married. My husband is also reclusive. We actually live well together, doing many things separately. We have separate interests and hobbies, but we also have conversation daily. Neither of us like towns, shopping, eating away from home, or any type of 'social gathering.' We live in the country and after a number of uninvited intrusions by strangers, we erected fencing around several of our acres to keep people out. We keep some livestock and have a very large garden and greenhouse. Most of our property is heavily wooded with a stream that attracts lots of wildlife. We enjoy nature immensely. Personally, I find the majority of people to be superficial and boring. I prefer my own company much more because I have many interests. Many believe this behavior is eccentric. Doesn't matter what they think, as long as they leave me out of their overly-busy, noisy world. Well wishes to all recluses
That is a perfect description of the sort of life I’ve been want to live for a long time. I just need to find a way to start building on some land, without going into debt. I know houses are expensive I wonder about real estate?
@@thomasdeclerck-d3j A mutual acquaintance got us together so we emailed for a few weeks first. Only took a few minutes in person to acknowledge that we had a 'connection'. From there we went on a hike in a National Forest nearby. Within a few hours of talking once we reached our hike-destination, we knew that we fit together.
Enough is enough, many become hermits just because how poorly society is designed. Too much people, too much noise, too much rush, which means endless stress. I can't go to crowded pools, spas or stolovkas anymore. When I see queue anywhere, I just turn around and leave home or nature. Most people seem to like it. They like fast life and fast cars, but I am cycling all summer long. It's a slow travel, but you can enjoy every landscape it provides. I also hate modern cities, they want to become bigger and bigger, they want more and more, yet no one really needs more. All we need is less noise and peaceful days. I left big city to the next commune and nowadays it starts to grow. I miss river sure, which I like in Loimaa, called Loimijoki. But for now I am tryna to live as it is. It's hard as in ten years you see what growth is. There is rarely a free spot in a food shop at peak time. Someone must like it, but I just want to run from their shops. Absolutely no way I could visit one daily. Even once a week feels like chore. Good luck for every hermit out here. We can make it.
"Life becomes a repetition" truer words were never spoken. My friends and family cannot sit in one place for more than a few minutes, they must constantly be "going somewhere" or "doing something" they cannot simply be.
It’s like you go back in time to centuries before, when people lived surrounded mostly by silence and the sounds of nature. I have a little place in the country 150km from the city. When I get up there on weekends, I can just stop. Listen to the rain, actually see the stars. Hear an owl hooting or a koala grunting. Eagles flying. It’s beautiful.
I am a recluse myself. I live in remote wooded area. The only time I see other people is when I am forced to shop for groceries. Its not perfect, but its better than living in a violent city.
Seems there is something similar in west and east: those who isolate themselves from rest of society are generally considered crazy or having some other problems.. I mean, who wouldn't want to live amidst such healthy hives the cities offer with all the glorious dirt and grime.
The only thing that might explain why these people are considered "crazy" at this point is genetic pool and various degrees of mental illness compounded by generations of trauma. What do I mean by that? Two worlds wars, even more wars before that, cyclical financial crisis spread over time, etc etc etc. What you get from all that is the ones who remains in the cities and keep playing the game are already too far contaminated by the disease, and they keep breeding. The ones who manage to retain mental sanity are the ones who "escape the system" or go "live off grid", and these ones often do not breed, leaving only the crazy ones to carry their genes on. Well, you get the picture. It's not an optimistic outlook for sure.
@@FeelingShred it's true that society is getting dumber because the smarter and more self-aware ones are seeing the state things are headed to and are becoming depressed and dying in confinement, becoming addicted to food, drugs or games. Very sad.
No, people admire the ones who give up. If you stay in the world to fight concretely you are considered unspiritual. Staying in the world is more difficult, humble and altruistic!!!

Tbh I don't see the tragic thing in not being found after dying. Dying is just a natural part of life. If you chose to retreat from modern life you just accept the flow of life. When your time comes you accept that too. I rather die alone but free than live my life like a zombie or robot everything being dictated by the market, or an employer or company that doesn't give a shit about me anyway. They will fire you the second they can afford to. I think accepting death is one of the most important and freeing lessons a human can learn. Now bein afraid of pain is not so easy to overcome...but probably still doable once your mind is really quiet.
@SARA Couldn't agree more. Never had the need to leave something behind other than maybe a beautiful garden or forest for someone else to enjoy. Also don't need kids to continue my work or legacy, I think it only brings more karma and attachment. But obviously everybody is different and my way doesn't need to be other peoples way.
Words! This is why I decided to leave the work. I liked to work with computers, but 40 hours a week? Any work, I believe one can love for sure, but never so often it becomes a chore. I came home just to sleep and spend on items for boredom I had from work. Now I live on sabbatical, and I'd rather sell mushrooms, berries or collect bottles for deposit, than go to "normal" work. Once I have roughly 712 € a month, I can pay my rent, few bills and have food and other necessities in life. I have no car, and drive with my bycicle much like Rob Greenfield. I don't know what makes people work so much. Is money that good or vacation it gives in Maldivs. I'd rather never visit Maldivs to feel content in real life, as less money means less stress. Less anything, best teacher in your life.
I did 2 years in a rain forest cabin in Canada with my girlfriend and our dog. We had no vehicle, it was an 8 hour walk from the nearest person. Off grid, no hydro. Weeks would go by without seeing another person. I went 3 months without spending any money. Living off the land, berry's and fish. Watching the cycles of nature and playing a lot of guitar.
Bowdean Mcnowski good for you but that was not meditating. Billions of people live all their lives the way you lived for two years. You probably had enough to eat and your country is the security for you if anything bad happened but people living in developing countries would always be on their own
I didn't say anything about meditating ? "Billions of people" is simply not true. No, we had no food, we had to learn really quick how to forge, which during the freezing of winter was very difficult, we we're on a small island in the Pacific Ocean away from everything, after the first 6 months we became extremely under weight and I became very Ill. Its was 10 years after this experience that I did spend 12 months in a secluded meditation retreat by myself, meditated 4 -6 hours every night in silent darkness tucked away in the rain forest.
@@anth789 that's the problem. Everything is owned or claimed by some person of group of people. It's rare to find a person who will allow there land to be leeched off of. @@cheeweez7873 Yea especially if you live in Germany. There was one dude living for years in a forest owned by a person who allowed him to live there. But he had to leave because the government told him that he can't just life in a forest.
I really think of a recluse as someone who lives alone in the woods with no companionship at all, but there are defiantly a lot of people who are very isolated even if they live with others.
I have found this new lifestyle myself in the forest of Northern California. It is every wonderful thing I had hoped for ! However remember that, True it is: ‘Wherever you go,,,,,,,, There you are’.
That's very commonly said, but the true is that, while what you say is not false, the environment changes a lot the relation one has with oneself and the way your inner world develops and shows. Certainly, in calm places all the things that were hidden inside you show up, good and bad, but that's a good thing. Actually not in all places "you are". I would say in cities one is not oneself, and only when you move to the proper place: you are.
@@screambeyond I agree that being in the city activates our social masks, which makes it harder for someone to realize themselves. However, even going to a more peaceful area can have it's challenges due to the fact that everyone brings their subconscious with them wherever they go. I think thats the more technical explanation for this quote. This is often why there are various aspects of Vedic and Buddhist practices that involve cleansing the subconscious mind and body of imprints. Unless those imprints have been uprooted, they will continue to follow someone wherever they go. I think moving out to a more silent area only lessens the chances of those subconscious wounds being externally "re-triggered", which means that it will be a little easier to deal with them when they bubble up internally.

If nothing else it gave me the inner peace and gratitude towards the gods that allows me to be comfortable amidst the most stressful circumstances. I always wanted to be a hermit but not because of the reasons like school systems, shittygovernment, stressful jobs, etc. I actually want those things because it makes me busy and purposeful, the reason I want to be a hermit is mainly how people treat others in an unfair, bad, harsh way.
Over 20 years ago, the abbot of a famous Zen temple came to Atlanta, Ga (USA), where I live; during the question and answer period, I asked him to explain the saying, "Your Zen may be good enough for the mountaintop, but is it strong enough for the battlefield." I do not remember his response, given through an interpreter; I only remember thinking that I still did not understand. Now, I understand; the battlefield is our everyday lives; the struggles and fighting are simply the encounters we have with others, each day, and the struggles inside ourselves.
I live in the country, surrounded by nature here on the East Coast in NC. I have embraced the hermit lifestyle with health and enthusiasm for over 8 years now, and love, love, love it. I see people on my terms, I value my time, and do very well without the demands of crazy society. It takes a brave soul for this, but once it is embranced, it is glorious... One of the misconceptions about living this lifestyle is that you have no contact with the outside, and that's a very narrow, and primative opinion. One that the media usually pushes. NOT truth. Always In Peace and light...😇🥰
I've no problem with moderate dietary practices, but that is too extreme insofar as getting all the essential vitamins and minerals that the body requires.
In 2 months ahead i am going to live hermit. I have done with living in the city, paying my rent and another bills every month. I hate modern society, they always pursue anything without end as if they will live forever. I don't wanna live as wage slave of the rest of my life. I have no problem living in the nature because i love hiking and explore new places. Now i am 34 yo and don't have plan neither to marry nor having a child. Life in the city really sucks.
To be completely honest I do not think people should live as hermits or hikis or shut ins or what ever you want to call it. There is much wisdom to learn and perhaps in the short term it is beneficial but the longer you live that lifestyle the harder it is to ever come back from it. We are social creatures we long for connection we long for a purpose to keep striving on. It all seems very bleak when you face the possibilities of facing modernity but when you shut yourself out from the world it has a price. You will find valuable wisdom but you will spend the most important resource you have doing so. The time you spend down that path will drift away. The hardship you will face will be valuable not eating for long periods of time suffering with the human instinct to survive suffering with the burden of being alone. It is not a path most should choose. The time you spend disconnected will rob you of what it means to connect. The time you use to yourself is lost with time you could have spent with someone else. It is a path that seems romantic but it has a lot of suffering. I honestly think anyone considering it should really understand the difficulty before they engage in it. You are an adult and you will make your own decisions but understand that your escape will be challenging. A lot of people would probably love to be in your current position and many hermits might even harbor those same desires. Perhaps your path in modernity is very sought after even among the recluses that you want to emulate. I only say these things because as someone who wasted so much time I honestly think as bad as modernity is it gives a security that you can only appreciate once it is gone. Take care of yourself and walk your own path but remember what you are seeking is within. You can find it in the strangest of places you can see it everywhere around you. You do not need to cut yourself off to find it all you need to do is slow down and think from the heart.
Great points,@@lorddurden4189! Sure it's up to everyone to make their own decision. Some hermits are at their roots for so long, it makes life harder. It's very known that many hermits are not accepted in society, for example you might have trouble searching for a job. I am hermit myself for years, I wanted to live reclusive life after bad relationships, and strong rush in a modern learn, work, retire and die lifestyle. I no more search friends or relationships, I find it generally waste of a time and energy. I simply can't. When you have no one to talk, you start to have problems articulation yourself. There's many situations when I just try to tell cashier something, yet nothing comes out. It's like one is trying to say something, yet your tongue goes loco. Sometimes I miss my dog which passed away, but I absolutely have no need for one more. I can't take it one more time losing it after years of life with them. Situationships with people are not worth either, when you search truth-seekers and get someone who is using you for their benefits. After that and many more hermit is born. I am sure there are good moments in everything, but for me hermit life is best life. Hermit life just works, one can be alone, in peace and nature. No stress, just rest. For each at their own terms :)
So happy to see this kind of thing happening in China, and having them remember their roots. While it is good they have prosperity, all that gaudy materialism, is not wise nor conducive to inner peace.

I've become a recluse in the last decade or so. I used to be an extrovert. I used to like people despite knowing the depravity they're capable of. Then I found out first hand how deeply that same depravity pervades the very institutions that are supposed to provide security and structure to society. It almost destroyed me. I've not been able to feel safe ever since. I feel the most safe at my country home, but when my dog alerts to something outside, my stomach sinks in fear that someone has come to desecrate my life and take another piece of me. Sometimes I wish I could disappear into the mountains of China. Maybe there I could find the peace that so many sages claim is possible.
I had, and to some extent still have, a similar experience. Not in contradiction to what you said but in addition, you might find the desired peace in God, even from the far mountains in china 🙏🏻

Thank you for sharing. I like the way they are living. I am still not sure why one became reclusive, but you'll now it after peace and silence. What i don't like about society, everyone is in a rush. I hate rush, I don't want to rush each day to make money with which I do nothing. I don't need their money and I don't need their vacations in Maldivs. People go to work, so they can spend earned money on capitalism, which forces them at work every day. You can escape this rat race. I've become recluse after few relationshops. Sure I was probably boring too, but many people just wanted something out of you. Money is number one, everyone needs security, hence why most are in a rush for a relationship. Yesterday I sat home all day, only at dark evening around 9PM went to a shop with a 60 % bread for the tea ceremony. I grabbed one cup of a tea alone and I felt content. People, rush and noise makes me crazy. I just want to live in peace, to listen some edm music. I always felt alone with people. This is why one is reclusive. I will die alone too, one day.
This is a great video. I would just like to observe, though, that once the camera appears, it is difficult to distinguish between sincere, spontaneous gestures, and performance. When someone is filmed in a meditative pose, are they meditating, or performing? Once a hermit makes it on you tube, they’re finished. You Tube is peppered with “celebrity hermits.”
this looks like a dream. when I move back to Ireland I’m going to live in a small cottage in the countryside, minding my own business. I deleted social media off my phone recently and I feel so disconnected, but fuller, internally
I didn’t know this is becoming more common. I have been in my small trailer for a couple of months. I’ve gone out a few times to buy groceries, but a couple of weeks ago , I kept finding reasons not to go out. I understand so many of the comments here. I just didn’t know anyone else was doing this. My mind tries to accuse me for doing this but this is what I am now drawn to.
I'd recommend going shopping for food once a week. I can't go to shops more, they are so crowded. Instant stress from everyone in a rush. I hate rush, since life is better in slow motion.
There are many who chase fast cars, fast women and easy money at the McMansions - then there are those who want to be as far away from those people as possible!
Greed, anger, and delusion. We suffer in this spinning wheel angry at the world and want of things we don’t have. Once we have them, we want something else. Slaves to money, giving up our short time on this Earth to enrich our rent-seekers, for the few dollars that service endless debt for things we don’t need that only satisfy our desires for a moment. Then off to chase another desire and want. “If I only had this and that, and get away from this and that, I’ll be happy,” we say. It never ends; and then we die. Renounce, and go forth to solitude. Realizing having practically nothing but the basics of food and shelter is the path to the middle way. It’s liberation and freedom. Only then we have a chance to still the mind. When the mind is still, wisdom arises.

"If you want to bask in the sun you can find a rock to sit on. If you can take even a fraction of the meditative state into your doing, it ceases to become a chore. Also, when you are in nature, chores seem much less 'chore-ish'...if that makes sense.
What’s with all the people talking about how happy they are for these people these people are the product of a stressful capitalist system that’ll get worse if unchecked
They are modern hermits in a way. Just because you have a phone, doesn't restrict you in becoming a hermit. You wouldn't see anything about hermits if everyone was to decline all technology we have today. I live as recluse alone, I have laptop, phone and internet connection. You need to know things, what's happening around or to get help. Many of these hermits are not actually hooked to their electronics, just see how many of them look at their screens when filmed. There's always something else more important.

As a Chinese, that seems an odd thing to say, but maybe you just have little knowledge of our culture. There is complete freedom to practice any religion or concepts like Confucianism, in China. What the government does not tolerate are cults like Falun Gong.....pseudo religions that harm people's well being or spread divisiveness or hate.
Porridge, soups and bread. Tea for a drink. Many people ask what I am eating, but I literally don't like to eat anything. I only eat because you can not pass over life without eating. I don't like their stolovkas (I am from Russia, and we call canteens this way), as well I hate most of the foods offered. I am too lazy to cook, and meat is disliked strongly. I can take it when made, but when you are cooking from scratch, the taste and smell of the raw meat just makes me sick. People always laugh at hermits, but I literally eat bread all day long as I have no desire to eat anything else. Maybe fruits and vegetables as the bonus. For this year I stopped going to canteens or restaurants, as literally I hate rush in them and crowdness. There's a reason one is a hermit, you need silence and solitude. This is becoming a global phenomenon and I'm happy it is. I've totally had enough of what we refer today as society.
Especially today society and social media just makes me dislike people
It's an unnatural state the world is in.
❤Luke 21,36 KJV ❤
True that....I have relatives that do that very same thing. They are running themselves ragged and always wondering why they feel tired.
You're living my dream 👍👍👍
Plz let us know the difficulties if there is any..in your recluse life

Do you run into hunters, hikers, other forest dwellers?
Man you got lucky :)👍
(Living many other people's dream out there)
Seems there is something similar in west and east: those who isolate themselves from rest of society are generally considered crazy or having some other problems..

I don’t think dying alone could be tragic. It’s facing the inevitable with peace and not being disturbed.
I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.

Cool, thanks for sharing. Gald to see the youth taking some initiative.

I am so glad this video appeared in my recommendation list.
I have found this new lifestyle myself in the forest of Northern California.
It is every wonderful thing I had hoped for ! However remember that,
True it is: ‘Wherever you go,,,,,,,, There you are’.

Now I have an easily transferable career making sushi, one daughter and twins on the way. If nothing else it gave me the inner peace and gratitude towards the gods that allows me to be comfortable amidst the most stressful circumstances. This kind of life makes you strong in a way you never knew you could be. Don't mock these kids. They're following a more time tested and proven path than the one you yourself are on... I promise you that. Modernity has already failed... only a matter of time before that harsh but inevitable reality sets in.
In love with this documentary. I want this life.
What are you waiting for?
I would like to live as a hermit anytime!
Would very much like to live with the others in the Chinese mountains.
The hermit who plant 365 potatoes, one for each day, is so inspirational. In spring he can plant another 365, so he always has food
I've no problem with moderate dietary practices, but that is too extreme insofar as getting all the essential vitamins and minerals that the body requires.
Only one potato a day, you would definitely become sick if that’s really all you eat.

Awesome. This is necessary to the new generations

This kind of peace is what I will be aiming for from now on.

You wouldn't see anything about hermits if everyone was to decline all technology we have today. I live as recluse alone, I have laptop, phone and internet connection. it's easy to be a hermit like this when you don't have to worry about how to find your next meal or how to pay for a roof on top of your head
Exactly my friend. Exactly
I wonder if many Taoist monasteries were destroyed in China
As a Chinese, that seems an odd thing to say, but maybe you just have little knowledge of our culture. There is complete freedom to practice any religion or concepts like Confucianism, in China. What the government does not tolerate are cults like Falun Gong.....pseudo religions that harm people's well being or spread divisiveness or hate.
有能力養活自己 到哪都清靜
I was surprised to see the lone female living among the hermits. She seemed to have a better setup than the rest, nicer accommodations.
So is this retreat free? Who owns the retreat?
Might be Crown lands on the West Coast. Nature sets her own fees...
So what are the hermits eating?
It's not found in their stolovkas. I hate stolovkas so much, I will never visit one in a lifetime. I am not all the hermits here, but take or leave it. Hopefully it has something to chew. I think the hermits in a video even said what they eat, did you watch it? :)
