- Urbanization may be sweeping large parts of China, but some people still prefer to live in seclusion in far-flung areas, away from the hustle and bustle of city life. One of them is a young woman who left the city to live in a small hut on a mountain, choosing to lead a quiet and traditional life. Assignment Asia visited Zhongnan Mountain in Xi'an, which a photographer named Xiangzi now calls home.

In 2 months ahead i am going to live hermit. I have done with living in the city, paying my rent and another bills every month. I hate modern society, they always pursue anything without end as if they will live forever. I don't wanna live as wage slave of the rest of my life. I have no problem living in the nature because i love hiking and explore new places. Now i am 34 yo and don't have plan neither to marry a woman nor having a child. Life in the city still really sucks.
GO FOR IT. DO NOT WAIT.

Maybe start a B&B on the mountain so people can stay for a few days, come to rest and explore and leave with an refreshed mind and spirit.

It seems like she is at peace with herself and nature.
I think the safety comes from the mountains themselves. The Zhongnan mountains are full of myths and considered holy, and is the birthplace of kung fu in Chinese culture. There are many hermits living there. Given the local people's deep reverence to this history and culture, I don't think there will be many who will dare disturb the sanctity of those mountains.

You know. In America. If I wanted to live on a mountain. Which I do. But nevertheless.
First of all. I’d have to buy the land.
Second build the house.
Third pay taxes.
China. Or wherever this girl lives must have a similar system. You have to pay the government. There’s more to this story than what meets the eye.
Youre right about america but in some places in China you can just go live in the mountains. Dont have to buy the land or pay taxes on it. Check out Amongst White Clouds documentary about mountain hermits. Heck in Bhutan if your homeless the government will just give you land. America isnt the worst place but is a huge scam.

thehunterzz456 Zhongnanshan has been famous for thousands of years and is not far from city of xi’an so it is not difficult for her to run business of small hotel for people who like to experience hermit life. What she needs now to make her heart peaceful now, I guess, and I wish her a well balanced life of natural peace and convenience of modern.

not a recluse, just a nice girl living in the countryside or mountain clean air environment, in a nice house too. however, video and photo doesn't reveal the bugs, mosquitoes, smell, water source and sewage system. if she has water supply problem, then should dig a well or find a spring or river to tap. tks for upload, good idea to follow if finance is not lacking.

Zhong Nan Shan is famours for it hermits for a long historic time. In 1980, someone (Red Pine, an America) once met a hermit who even didn't know Mao Zedong.
