- In today's video, I plant a new flower bed that will eventually cover the brick wall at the back of my garden!
This brick wall has been unsightly for a number of years now and it was about time to say goodbye to it!

Its about time Mrs novice gardner got involved in these projects 🔥😎💪🏾
I can feel, that this is your backyard💪. Good work. Greetings from Germany
Don't mean to have a negative comment but I would have had to paint that fence and at least put some brick acid on that wall to tidy the background up. Just my opinion 🫤
Hi! THANK YOU (a big thank you) for all your lawn advice. I have learned so much. I now have a velvety green lawn, one to go. You’re patient and not st all about ego etc., so easy to watch. Thank you for taking the time to create these videos. Ignore the wallies with their bossy comments… or just graffiti the wall with a Pink Floyd “All in all we’re just another brick in the wall!” 🤩
Efflorescence cleaning liquid with a wire brush will make that wall brand new
Hi mate glad you made a bed. Just from experience if you mix in some perennials this brings in more interest and wildlife. Might be good on you front bed as they are hardy. Also hydrangea gives some winter interest and like low light areas. Hostas also good in shaded areas. Lupins, foxgloves, Delpheniums also give height and flowers. There is so much choice and as long as you don’t have a slug problem they will thrive. Highly recommend.
Lastly highly recommend a climber on a sunny wall. Clematis, is great, dwarf wisteria, are good even in pots and honeysuckle loves clay. Also recommend fuchsia and buddleja around the garden.
Looks great. Keep on top of the Robin Red. Looks lovely. Grows fast. If it overhangs your lawn the grass won’t grow. We had to cut ours back hard. You will also need to pick up the leaves. As they are probably one of the best at covering your lawn and leaving patches.
Really enjoying your videos. Thank you. 👍
Crying out for some masonry paint, but the bed is a cracking idea. I'm enjoying your videos fella!
Your walls need a washing with builders acid to get rid of of that white leakage. Its a common fault with today's cement.
Good work and great video 🤘
Nice to see you’ve chosen a couple of Photinias (Red Robins) and what looks to be a Choisia as well. They will grow quite fast in a few years and provide colour and flowers eventually which the bees love. One thing I would say though (especially while the plants are still newly dug in)… in the corner with the red robin/choisia you might want to space them out a little more as both can spread out quite a bit as well as grow taller. I’m speaking from experience here as I’ve got those next to each other in my garden and the choisia got a little crowded out. Of course, once established, the red robin is quite hardy and will tolerate pruning back and shaping quite well. In a year or so, that prison wall will be well hidden!
Hopefully it all starts to fill in over the next couple of years 🤞🏻
I did think about the placement of those in the corner. Fingers crossed it's ok, but is definitely food for thought!
@@NoviceGardener The red robin will grow pretty fast. Ours has gone mad this year and I saw a photo of it from about 3 years ago and it was tiny (about 3ft). Now approaching 8ft I'd say! It's a lovely coloured shrub though, esp in Spring. The choisia will eventually flower and the bees love it. Nice scent as well. I bet in a years time, your garden will be looking great!
It’s nice to paint the fences to match the brick. Gives as nice contrast against the green of the plants.
One piece of advice - check plants aren’t toxic/poisonous to dogs or pets. Plants in our back garden were already there when we moved in. Noticed our dog got continuously ill in summer months, spent a lot on vet bills etc. Then neighbour showed us an app to ID plants - turns out 50% of the plants were toxic to dogs and had been poisoning him when he was in garden in summer. Dug them all out, problem solved.
I’ll have a look at that, it’s a great shout 👍🏻
@@NoviceGardener app is called PlantNet
Also apply mulch to open soil to prevent weeds and retain moisture
Alan thitchmarsh don't have nothing on you mate lol, good video again mate
🤣
Nice one!
Honestly think you should have sorted the back drop out first...either battern stained fencing or just painting wall and fence. You will be trampling on planted flowers when you want to sort out the backdrop colours.
Nice, you thought about putting any Pyracantha on a trellis or something similar?
Looks good mate, but your lawns are shrinking.
Cheers 👍🏻
That was the only thing that's held me back for a while!
Great video. What plants do you recommend against a wall that gets no direct sunlight please?
Cheers 👍🏻
I'm no plant expert though so I may not be much help! I just went to the garden centre and checked all the labels and looked for shade tolerant plants.
Fatsia Japonica will easily demolish that fence in 3 years time. Wouldn’t even know it’s there
My missus always says when are you going to paint the fence panels 😅 that will definitely look good.
To be honest, the only reason I haven't is because I thought it would look odd if I didn't paint the fence on the wall at the back (too scared to risk my life up there! 😅)
@@NoviceGardener Haha, oh yeah that makes sense, hang over the other side with a roller 😂
Are you getting any seed germination from the overseeding you did on that lawn 2 weeks or so ago? It's hard to see, I know you mentioned not walking on the lawn to much because of the overseeding you did, but you didnt mention or show how that grass seed is doing.
I’m hoping to put a video up next weekend with an update. Started great, but the rain over the past couple of weeks has done a number on the seed around the perimeter next to the wood! Lots has done well in the centre, but will be going on again in the next week or so with a bit more. Just hoping for less rain! 🙏
@@NoviceGardener I was curious as I did mine 6 days ago, just not seeing any germination yet.
@@TonyTurbo78 Did some 3 weeks ago, seeing about an inch growth thus far. Slow and steady this time of year.
@@derrollbartram5200 Thanks for the info. How long did it take for you to see your first little blade of grass push up through the soil? I've done everything to the tee this time around, scarified, airated, A1 lawn seed, little layer of compost and rolled in, but no sign of any germination. I waited until the temps where up around 12+, its been lovely down here in the south this past 3 or 4 days and was expecting to see something. Soil temp is 13c or 14c, good ph level etc.
You have planted shrubs in a flower border 😂 . We all did it as novices don’t worry 😂
How rude that people have said your garden looks like a prison yard. It’s your home. Also, why do people criticise what you’re doing and how you’re doing it? I don’t get.
I sometimes think this 😅
Just out hear trying my best!
Nice work man - It'll be interesting to see how they do
