Note: Just to clarify on my single card over two card comment. The way that box art works currently is that it exists on the first SD card, but if your roms are on the second SD card, it's a bit of a hassle to scrape those roms, and then have the artwork show up in the right spot on the first SD card. So much so that I chose to make the guide one SD card only.
If you don't care about box art, feel free to use two SD cards. Format the second SD card as EXFAT, then create a ROMS directory, and follow the same steps with just adding subfolders for each system. That's all, the only thing on that card will be a ROMS folder with system subfolders and your games inside.
A few more tips:
1) In Retroarch (settings > directories), you can change the BIOS and Saves directory to be on the TF2 card, then copy all your BIOS and saves to that card so that they're all together with the ROMs. This way you don't need to back these up when upgrading OS. You just need to backup artwork and retroarch settings using the backup manager in MuOS.
2) Since in-game save files are compatible with all cores, there's really no reason for it to save them in core-specific folders. In Retroarch (settings>saving) you can disable "sort saves by core" and enable "sort saves by content folder" so all your saves are in a folder with the same name as the console folder.
Nice tips,i will try this..thx you so much
A good day for the SP. Really appreciate the work of all the talented devs and content creators like you. 🙏
lets goooo! i just bought one and watched all your videos about it! thank you for all your vids they are so good:)
I've been using the RG35XX H version, which felt super rough around the edges (understandably so). The new muOS, and the changes it brings for the SP, feel tremendously better. Thank you so much for the simple and straightforward guide, Joey!
Thanks Joey, you're a saint!
I'll try to install the muOS on my RG35XXSP after I receive my 128 GB micro SD card. Great video dude! ✌🏻
Super cool video 😮
The boot time is 6.3 seconds and that's a great Achievement. Congrats!
Best reviewer and retro gaming news man around!👾🕹️🎮
Awesome! Easy to follow even for a newbie.
I just got my RG35XX SP!!! I'm about to go ham on mine!
Agreed. It's a solid CFW lad. Great setup guide lad. Thanks!
Just a Heads Up Micro Center Micro SD cards work amazingly! Me and Zu always use Micro Center SD Cards on our Handhelds.
Thanks joey 🙂
HDMI output is completely broken right now. Once you unplug the device from the TV, sound stops working from the SP, even after numerous restarts, and resetting the config. Only fix is to reflash the card...
What version are you on? Just saying "right now" probably won't be of much use in 3 weeks or so.
@@kevinstrident latest release, 2405.1 REFRIED BEANS
@@johnkiyo9752 Thanks for clarifying.
FOR ANYONE ON MAC - Raspberry Pi Imager also works to flash the card
Joey, Can you make a tutorial video that goes in depth to setting up SyncThing for both muOS and the Steam Deck?
😮 no "format to ExFat before flashing" indication? First time I see this in one of these guided, congrats! Finally somebody understood that that is a useless step
I want to upgrade to this pretty bad, but I just followed your first guide exactly a week ago lol. I'm too lazy to go back and reflash the SD card that I just bought to do the first run of this. Especially after all the time spent getting it all configured in a way that I'm happy with lol. Wish there was an easier way to upgrade software but I guess that is where the benefits of having 2 SD cards comes into play. Joey, do you think you might be able to make an upgrade guide as well?
Thank you for this great video Joey! Just updated from the previous muOS version. Do anyone else have issues with frame pacing issues in MGBA rumble and gpsp core? I didn't have this issue in my previos muOS version. Frameskipping is turned off and I'm using the sharp shimmerless shader. I can see it when running left or right in all pokemon games. What is the standard shader used for GBA in muOS? Retroarch automatically used the sharp shimmerless shader I already used in my previous muOS version.
Maybe its just me but its taking a looooong time to download
same, like a few hours to download and im connected to an Ethernet with no background programs running
Alternative link in the description or use Jdownloader like I said in the description, multiple options :)
Mine got to 1.3GB and then said it was complete even though it obviously wasn't. I tried again with Jdownloader 2 and it worked fine, still pretty slow at ~1.7MBps, but way faster than I was getting. Apparently there's a torrent link on the Discord too.
@@JoeysRetroHandhelds pls do two card setup. i will not have my roms on the system sd
@@nirgunawish You can check the muOS website for instructions, I won't be doing another video unfortunately.
Great video, everything is well explained. You don't want to make a video on muOS (AnbernicSP) how to set Portmaster correctly?
Thanks! Do you have any plans on doing a guide for Syncthing? Your guide for FolderSync was amazing, but now my Linux devices feel left out!
This OS is literally one patch away from being damn near perfect.
Thanks for the detailed guide, Joey. I set up MUOS today following your video perfectly.
One question: the speaker is crackling a lot after the update even on lower volumes. Any ideas? I know its mono and cheap but I dont believe its normal. Thanks
Depends what you mean, the H700 series has an issue across all devices with static noise and crackling (even across all cfw). But if it's something else, not really sure.
Thanks man!
Great video thank you! I do have an issue when i change the sleep function in settings and then save it the whole system crashes and all i get is a black screen. I then power cycle it and it crashes on the splash screen. I have the RG35XXsp model
14:27 The better (and intended) option is to put your ROMs into different folders for different cores. Keep most of your GBA roms in the "GBA" folder and make another "GBA but with mGBA Rumble" folder, then move your ROMs and assign the core for that folder.
Good option as well yep.
mgba rumble doesn't have auto save/load state. I was trying to figure out why my games wouldn't quick resume and realized the core didn't support it. Quick resume works great in gpsp
It's a bug, pins in the Discord have a fix.
Hey Joey, this is great stuff. However, from what I understand the only way to update MuOS is by performing a fresh install. Is there a way to save all of these settings and apply to new updates? While it is great, I just don’t want to have to do all this every time there’s an update.
Yep, use the backup options in apps, task commander. Then restore them using archive manager. It'll restore a lot, not everything.
Perfect. Just what I was going to ask.
@joey hey brotha question installed refried on rg35xx plus. All is perfect but it doesn't go on sleep mode..can u help
Sorry - beginner here, is retroarch standard on the system or is it part of the muOS
I am looking to be able to run a pixel grid shader over GBA/GBC games but I’m a little confused with all the OS options
HDMI out still not working, if u use it, the sound will no longer work from the device. Port master keeps crashing and wont responde. And still no scrapper....Just thought yall would like to know
Did someone try out the HDMI output? What are the differences from the StockOS?
Can i use the stock sd card built it on my rg35xx h?
Hello, good morning, I have a couple of questions, can you play nds? With this OS, platforms such as n64, dreamcast, psp are optimized? With this OS, are the same filters applied as well as the Gba logo in the games? Do they serve functions like WiFi and Bluetooth? Thanks, I'm using the translator so my English won't be perfect
I used Balena Etcher to flash MuOS. What are the problems using it?
Retro Achievements quit loading on my Ambernic SP with muos refried beans I have checked retroarch and I have them turned on and have even re entered my user name and password and saved my configuration. Lastly all my other devices retro achievements is working fine.
Hey Joey, how have you gone about customizing inputs and hot keys for N64 or Dreamcast?
Pretty simple, I don't play either of those on a device without sticks hehe
1. Can you remap the power button so that it toggles between dpad and joystick for N64, Dreamcast, and PsP?
2. Does N64 work in retroarch rather than the horrible standalone emulator? I see you csn change thr core but are the cores in retroarch or the standalone n64 emulator?
1. No.
2. Both are available. If it works, shrug, I didn't buy this for N64 personally.
Can you pass the same card between an SP and a 28XX to keep the same saves and states?
Yep.
You might want to add a pin comment on how to fix the screen scaling. I couldn’t figure out how to keep it filled
Hm? Can you give an example?
Is there a way to just update from beans to bean refried by putting the image in update folder (rg35xxsp) ?
Nope.
I have an RG35XXSP currently being delivered to me, it'll still take some days for it to arrive, so I wanted to ask this ahead of time
I don't have much experience with SD cards, other than using it for say, my 3DS and Steam Deck, so sorry if this sounds like a stupid question
Why do you suggest I get an SD card reader? Do I only need it if my computer doesn't have an SD card slot? I have one on my current computer and it currently does not have an SD card inserted. Can't I just insert it into my computer, or would that cause problems?
You can.
Does this apply to 2 card setup?
3:02 After I select "RG35XX - SP", my device shows a boot screen that says "FIRMWARE UPDATE" and "Updating 'boot.bin' for device!". Then, after a few seconds, it says "Updating 'packages.bin' for device!". Once a few more seconds go by, the screen goes black and the green LED stays on, but nothing happens. I'm using a SanDisk-brand 128GB SD card, and my SD card reader is also UGREEN brand. I've followed the tutorial closely, but I can't get past this step. Any suggestions?
Try redownloading the image and reflashing, seems something corrupted.
stock sdcard died after first game launch..cannot keep it
Retroachievements has quit loading on both my Anbernic SP's very odd they were working but have quit am I going to have to re-install refried beans?
I can't say I've experienced that issue, you may want to join the muOS Discord and report it, not sure what's going on.
@JoeysRetroHandhelds I finally figured it out the system showed me being connected to the internet when I wasn't so once I was truly connected everything works fine 😊
Can anyone advise me on how to override the core screen scaling, I have it set to full in RA but when I load a game it defaults to the core provided scaling.
Overrides, save core override.
@@JoeysRetroHandhelds Thank you, i guess I forgot to do that when I changed it
I’m on the verge of buying the SP, the only thing what is stopping me is the miyoo flip. I wonder if it will have a better cpu? And when it will be released. Can I hold on…….? 😂
Hah, good luck.
If the Miyoo A30 is any indicator, don’t waste your time and just get the 35XXSP
@@nickentrosI love the miyoo mini plus so I have high hopes for the flip.
Is there an easy way to customize the hotkey combinations on muOS? I find some quite odd.
I show it in the video unless you mean something else?
@@JoeysRetroHandhelds Thank you for the reply. Aren't those the in-game Retroarch ones and not the system ones like brightness control etc.?
Does sleep work on drastic?
I can't seem to get the download for the firmware to work :( it either fails or just doesnt start
Use Jdownloader.
Does it still do Bluetooth?
The muOS Discord invite link doesn't work anymore, can you post a new one?
You sure? Seems to work: discord.gg/USS5ybVtDz
Will a 64gb card work okay for the new os? I only have like 10 gbc games on my card
Yep.
@@JoeysRetroHandhelds awesome I’m downloading now and gonna get set up. Thanks for your vids
What was the issue with balena etcher?
I just used Belena etcher and I’m not seeing any issues at all. I’ve used it for 3-4 devices now. 🤷♂️
@@josephfaircloth8322 same on my two. Good to hear!
What about macos?
Whats the benefit of this it seems like a massive downgrade? (New to this)
i just want nesbox theme from Emulation station :( is muOS using emulation station?
It's not.
@@JoeysRetroHandhelds do you recommend knuli? or not yet
@@alexisdanel9370 knulli works amazing on mine. also looks better ofcourse... emulation station is always nice.
Stock RA is a much better experience though
I would very much disagree, but we all have options.
Is there an option to search for games?
Not yet no.

Updated supporter screen
You should have mentioned the broken HDMI issue like the others have mentioned. Thanks...
I don't use HDMI, so how was I to know?
Great video but you don't need to use shaders on MuOS, the issue requiring shaders are in Stock OS
No, the devs included shaders as it's across all CFW.
To bad you have to start with a fresh install and there wasnt a simple update.
If you're coming from muos already, it's really easy using task commander! Can backup almost everything and restore it. (don't backup config or wifi)
@@JoeysRetroHandhelds Are there instructions to update?
@@iced00777 muOS discord has for what to backup, but it still requires a full flash.
I mean.. you could just copy and paste (manually backup) the whole retroarch folder (maybe another folder or two?)
And keep ROMs on a second card.
Right?
@@Stunnax757 They made a lot of changes to RetroArch between builds, so I would definitely not do that.
Bluetooth support ?
Negative.
the using only one sd card puts me abit off
You can use two, just don't suggest it unless you don't care about box art. They have instructions on their website.
Can't stand muOS i prefer Knulli
same.. looks better ofc and many themes etc etc... batocera ftw
