Note: According to muOS dev's, here's the explanations for shaders in case you don't want to remove them, they serve a purpose: "The reason we ship with a default shader is to remove jittering/stuttering you'll see in some games. You'll notice this very easily if you boot SMB1 on NES without shaders or filters and just run right for a few seconds.
There's been a lot of time put into fixing this (it's actually particularly egregious on StockOS). I think we have a fix that should make the next build (and is already in the 28xx build) that won't require a shader.
You could also enable the Normal4x filter which will remove that issue as well."
Just ordered my first retro handheld ever and will be using this guide to set it up with beans. Praying I learn to flash the sd properly. Thanks for the guide!
"joey sucks" you've sealed your own fate
Just got myself a 35XX H and this was very helpful. Thanks!
This video was extremely helpful! I really appreciate you making this. I was using stock OS because I actually liked it but was having issues where it kept crashing every time I booted it up. Finally decided to download muOS and got everything working perfectly including moving my Pokemon Emerald save file over because of this!
Best darn retro handheld channel on RUclips in my opinion 👾🤖💯
No, you're the best.
Thanks for the guide, Joey! I'm gonna be using your tutorial to load MuOS into my 35XX Plus
Cheers! ♥️
Have fun!
Nice Joey nice! Thank you for all the awesome H stuff recently
You bet!
Stellar work again mate!
This person must have more followers. Great content!
Nice looks good. Thanks joey
For anyone curious, I see some people asked in the comments, your sd card might show different under "Partition Scheme" and "Target System". You don't need to format or reconfigure partitions before using Rufus as after it completes it will be correct.
Excellent guide, thank you for your hard work.
Might have to revisit this for the xx sp
This is amazing. I just ordered my 35xx h from aliexpress today.
I hope someone makes an updated video of how some n64 games run on this new os while I wait for it
Spent my entire day watching this, setting up muos and scrapping box art. My disabled self didn't like this manual labor at all. Great vid btw
I follwed your Tips and now 2 days later i have a full blown 128GB Setup. MuOS is good, but it has a few bugs that don't pop up at first glance... BUT if you put your mind deep into it, it finally works. MuOS has RetroArch 1.18.0 vs. Stock with 1.10.3.
Loving muos simply for the fact that drastic works on it without any tweaks. It was completely broken for me on batocera
Wow! Super smash bros looked like it was running super smoothly. This is something I need to do. Thank you so much for this vid
Did you happen to try Goldeneye? Any luck?
Congrats on the tutorial, Joey. The wiki for muOS is very lacking and I got very important information from this video.
Hey great video thank you o followed all you instrc but my joysticks are not working on some games is that normal i have the H model
Amazingly useful video! I'm thinking of moving from Batocera to Muos - can I just cut and paste the saves and box art from one to the other?
Thanks!
No, thank you! I appreciate the support :)
Thank you very much for this highly detailed tutorial about muOS on RG35XX Plus.
Would it be possible to explain how to use the script from antiKk to get the meta text with Skraper?
This looks soooo clean! Going to work on this on my 2nd xxH handheld. Now I understand that this guide is meant for the handhelds being mentioned
But
Is muos also on the OG Rg35XX and is it any good?
Still in development!
I just made an IMG and booted up MuOS..truly smooth. Question: Does it have video player support (MP4, MKV, etc..), like the latest stock Ok of anbernic??
You should ask why they ship it with threaded video ON by default, the devices are good enough to not use it, it creates stutters and adds input latency. At least you can turn it off in the config file in a PC (it freezes if you do it on the device)
Awesome video man. I've noticed that removing the shaders makes NES and SNES roms stutter for some reason. Also happens in Botacera. Not sure why. Also, the DOSBox-Pure core won't recognize the DPad inputs in MuOS for dos games.
Yep! Found that out after, check my pinned comment from the dev.
Hey Joey, is this thing still in beta or is it fully fledged now? Is it better than Batocera that came out for these a few months ago, if so in what ways?
Is the battery drain issue fixed with this OS? It happens to me even with stockOS (that I switch off with full battery and I switch on next day to maybe 80%). Thanks!
Good guide but do I need to format my 252 gb sd card to fat 32 before flashing the cfw onto it with rufus? Any specific settings for formatting and flashing I should have too? Cant wait ti try out this cfw on my rg35xx h for some n64 emulation.
Thanks for the video! Great help! Though, i followed all steps for adding artwork and it does not show on the system.
does muOS support stylus usage on NDS games on the RG35XX plus? setting things up for the kids and am so confused
Great walkthrough as always! You are my go-to for all handheld reviews and CFW videos. I am still having trouble launching N64 and Dreamcast games on muOS however. You mentioned at 19:29 that you also had issues booting N64 so I am wondering if you could clarify how to resolve this issue. Thanks! --EDIT: I pressed select in the games list and selected a core for N64 (rice) but my games still won't launch. Any idea why?
Hm, zipped? Try unzipping them.
@@JoeysRetroHandhelds that worked! You’re a genius! Thanks!
Any idea if it maintains the same battery performance as the original software?
What’s wifi useful other than retroachievents?
I have two problems with muOS: I can’t configure the controllers for N64 and most importantly I can’t boot up games using the external rice core, but I know that my roms are not the issue. Is there any guide available?
Is there a reliable way to flash the image file onto the sd on android? I keep trying to flash it, but it keeps getting stuck on the splashscreen boot up
Is their a quick shut down shortcut? Thanks for the Vid Joey!
Not yet no.
@@JoeysRetroHandhelds awww it’s the only feature that has me stuck on stock OS. Thanks, Joey.!! 🙏
@@ADHDreamsLeft on the Main Menu, Shutdown Device, boom.
How does performance compare to Koriki?
i am planning to buy 35xx H,is it required to use 128gb? i only have an extra 64gb
Hi, Just did the scrapping according to your video (just the preview pics, no boxart cause I do not need it) but they do not show up when cruising through the games... Looks like everything is there in the right folders on the SF card though. System icons work perfectly though. Do you know what might be the problem ?
Ok, got it. Whatever artwork you put in the "box" folder is displayed in the game list. What you put in "box" and "text" is displayed when you push the menu button to see more information in the game.
Is it true that bluetooth and HDMI out is till not wokring with this OS. Is it aksi possible to hot swap Firmware?
Looking to do a two card setup so I can have tiny best set go game library on card number two. Is it a big difference in setup? And isn't it easier for future updates or to try different OS to have a 2 card set up?? 🙏
You can: muos.dev/help/addcontent / muos.dev/help/sd2issues
how do you set to auto boot last game? also for some reason I done the scraping and it worked but they do not appear when I scroll through my games list, no preview or box art. Not sure what I've done wrong. Great video helped me set up my RG35xxH.
I figured out you cannot have roms in seperate folders it has to just be the rom file within the console folder itself it cant be console folder>rom folder>rom otherwise the skraper will put all your image files in a sub folder too and they will not appear when you scroll games.
Can you use a dual card set up? Specifically. Having my ROMs on one card in the case of the plus and my OS on the other.
You can: muos.dev/help/addcontent / muos.dev/help/sd2issues
Hi, I'm currently doing your guide and now I'm in the Scraper stage and after a while I got the message that I've reached the end of the daily scraping but it's not good because I have a lot more ROMS to do for them and I wanted to ask if you know of another option where it's also possible to do this and thus work simultaneously with two Software instead of waiting?
Only way is to donate on the site.
Does this OS supports external Joystick and TVout?
Any clue how to add custom artwork for rom hacks etc? I thought it would as easy as dropping a properly named file in the right directory but that just gives a white screen with "No Dat" displayed, looked at the dat file but there's nothing obvious to edit in there either 🤷🏻♂
Does MuOS support OTA updates? If there’s an update, not sure I would like to set all of this up over again.
Not yet, but it DOES have built in backup utilities that greatly simplify updating the OS. Also, it's 100% NOT complicated putting your roms on a secondary SD - in fact, you can scrape all your systems and then your games and box art will stay there, and you can backup your saves and configs before flashing a new update, then restore those backups and be up and running immediately.
The silver lining of not being able to afford a 35xx h with accessories is waiting for the firmware options to mature haha. They all seem almost there. All of this manual scraping is kind of a deal breaker for me atm
Hello, good morning, I have a couple of questions, can you play nds? With this OS, platforms such as n64, dreamcast, psp are optimized? With this OS, are the same filters applied as well as the Gba logo in the games? Do they serve functions like WiFi and Bluetooth? Thanks, I'm using the translator so my English won't be perfect
Hi, is there any tutorial to scrap box art on MacOS? thankyou!
The RG35XX series taught me not to be a FPGA snob. This thing performs better than my Analogue Pocket.
My RG35XX H doesn't boot up when I insert the SD card freshly flashed with muOS beans for the initial boot. It doesn't have a problem booting up when I go back to the SD card I previously used with batocera. Can anyone please help? :S
is rg35xx 1st gen included ?
I'm lost at 4:47 what am I supposed to do everytime i press add it tells me to browse and choose a file
What would be the best Os for a R35S? I bought one and tried to install R36S Arkos but im having lots of trouble
That's unfortunately the only option, you can follow my setup guide and the pinned comment on that video.
It unable to display non-ASCII file names 😥
@JoeysRetroHandhelds Hi Joey, my DC roms are folders containing CUE and BIN files. MUos doesn't see them as games so I need to enter the folder and find the CUE to launch the game. It also means I can't select a default core for all the games in the system. Any tips?
Hey, I would convert them to CHD - joeysretrohandhelds.com/guides/recommended-file-types-for-roms/#Sega_Dreamcast
@@JoeysRetroHandhelds Thanks! One more thing: I've got TMNT running through Portmaster but the scaling is way off (RG35XX+). I can't seem to find the config file to change the resolution manually. Do you know this by any chance?
Apologies, I do not, I would check on the muOS Discord.
Can somebody tell me how in the world I don't have a bios file in my stock OS 240409?
Mac user, is there any other way to get box art? I have all the image files
So I’m trying to add box art from Skraper on my XX SP I just got. After I select the ROMs location on my stick and hit next twice it just closes out. Any ideals?
Hm, no, sounds like something is broken with the program. Try a reinstall of Skraper?
Thanks man I’ll try that when I get home. The card is all set and working just fine. Been using my system just fine too but not sure why skraper isn’t working, would it be the stock OS?
I would appreciate your help. I got to the part where the theme is set and I downloaded the ART BOOK zip file, but when I get to the device and select it, the display on the device goes crazy and turns into strange colors and not like yours. How can I solve this? ?
Thanks.
I would join the muOS Discord and try troubleshooting there, that's unfortunately out of my knowledge.
@@JoeysRetroHandhelds oh now it’s working I’m so happy thx for your guide I love it🙏🏻
@@Maor595 How did you fix it?? I am getting the same error.
what if after I do the Rufus part the device dont turn on? I followed the steps correctly im using a onn. A2 micro sd 128gb my device is the RG 35XX
35XX Plus or 2024? If you have the original 35XX, this doesn't work for that.
How to connect usb gamepad on muOS?
Bought a name brand sd card and still got fucked; not showing up in windows after flash and install, not even via diskmgmt... Any idea what to do?
Try connecting it to an alternate device, or use a different reader. I have an Anker card reader that will not read the new Sandisk 512gb card I just got, but it'll read other cards, and that card will work with other readers. I think there's probably a software solution that could fix your problem, but it's above the my pay grade
Just putting my Gameboy games into my "Joey Sucks" folder right now 😁
And by long while you really mean long while, after 45 minutes I restarted with a different SD
Oh more like 5-10 minutes max, any more and something is wrong. If you mean the first install of muOS.
@@JoeysRetroHandhelds yeah, it was definately the fault of the microSD I used. I threw in the SD I got with the device and I'm already setting it up
64gb enough?
can I use two SD cards one for SW and one for ROMS?
Yes, but you won't be able to scrape artwork as easily.
How do I scrape the box art if my roms are on TF2?
No clue, it's why I didn't recommend two SD cards :)
anybody know if the set up process is the same for Mac users? im using an old MacBook and had the hardest time setting up Onion OS on my Miyoo Mini Plus, being borderline computer illiterate def didnt help
Classic mac L
@@tswan137 a more useful reply would have sufficed but it's cool
What about rg35xx (no H, no plus)?
TBD from the dev.
Came to ask this too.
can you trade pokemon in the GBA games?
I don't think you can. But I'm sure hoping that we're able to with the future update. Along with Bluetooth audio, over there updates, and HDMI.
@@UniqueJ retroarch 1.17 and higher with the latest gpSP core version can do it.
Dual Card setup supported?
It is, but annoying for box art.
Hi,
Can't seem to fetch the box art, it's like the script is no longer useable?
Just did it yesterday, so I would double check your steps.
@@JoeysRetroHandhelds Thanks, got it working.
I had to download the raw script and not just right click save it.. oops
Does that OS work on RG35xxSP? Thanks
In the upcoming update, yes.
4:12 RIP midnight users
what do we select if we're using the SP?
Currently, the Plus.
@@JoeysRetroHandhelds Thanks but lets say hypothetically i picked the wrong one... is there a way to reselect that once its installed?
@@smulligan Yep, in Configuration.
Anybody knows if this firmware works for regular RG35XX?
Not currently no.
My box arts and previews don't show up, I don't know why 😢
Try going through the guide again and making sure they're in the right folders. muos.dev/help/artwork
I dont have the BIOS Folder or ROMS
I accidentally deleted my original sd card
You will have to source them unfortunately. If you want the ones from the device, the Anbernic stock firmware has them, from their firmware download site.
Theres no bluetooth setting
No 28xx?
Not yet.

@@JoeysRetroHandheldsthank you 😊
What if you don't have Windows? Can you use another platform ? I have Chromebook will that work with this as well?
N64 is much better than in trimui smart pro... 😢
Comment
This is unbelievably tedious, why doesn't it just recommend which core is best for each particular rom? That's what you're doing manually, why doesn't a list exist already? Not to mention you can't even save the core settings for each rom... im just supposed to remember?
This is like when i go to play skyrim, i add all the mods i want, get them configured perfectly... then by the time i'm done I don't wanna play anymore...
I prefer botocera far more
same, it has bluetooth, which is major. My 3.5 jack on my rg35xx plus lasted 3 days.
@@shinobusensui9395 thats crazy Ben using my RG 35XXH That One has been my favorite so far for PlayStation.
