lost the count of whispering myself "this is my best one" while on Dust. The "metro" feeling, and creep was awesome. Maybe plot may have been enriched a little more. All in all, loved it a lot.
Well I had it in my sights. And was behind cover. So I figured I'd better run away and enter an empty building. Thereby ensuring that this thing could sneak up on me from any direction. Great visuals. But duuuumb tactics. Might want to switch off that geiger counter BTW. That sound is sort of giving away your position.
@Reploid REVO The Geiger counter seemed to only sound loud, once the protagonist turned around; didn't make a lot of sense to me- since the Geiger counter's sound should have increased as the creature got closer, to be an effective device for defensive purposes, and not just when the protagonist finally turned around, and it was too late. So I agree, another, inconsistent detail in this visually well-produced (but story wised flawed) short video, IMHO. I personally think the little details are what really makes a story be a good one.
Yeah, I couldn't understand her tactics at all. I thought that when she got up on that bridge-like structure she had a big advantage -- she was elevated with a clear field around her and if the beast managed to make the bridge, he'd have to come straight at her without deviation. But instead she goes running to a dark building with a million recesses in it where the thing could hide and come at her from any direction. But what do I know?
This short really creates a realistic window into the final moments of a survivors life. Gritty and without direction truly unreliant on any narrative. What we see is what there is and sometimes that's all you get in life.
That poor ferret. I felt more remorse for it than the human. Not that I am totally without empathy but she is obviously the most capable being left on the planet. She let her guard down, the irradiated zombies still retaining their hunting skills put them to use when hunger strikes. They are definitely carnivores! This is one of the best Dust presentations I've seen up to now. Watched it several times with more viewings in the future. Well done you guys!!!
The building she is in when she is confronted by the monster appears to be some kind of art gallery or museum etc. A building that would have very little value to a survivor.
For a survivor who takes so much care in the care of her weapon, plus body hygiene - why and for whom? - she amazes with unbelievable carelessness during her patrol. Many of these science fiction films convince with technical brilliance, but the stories and motifs behind them are often very, very thin. I suppose they're all student graduate theses from a film school.
I think it's credible (just about). We know she has a weapon, but that doesn't necessarily mean she's a soldier. She could have acquired her weapons through other means, and learned how to take care of them through a combination of intuition and trial and error. (She might have some sort of engineering background, which would help her out a little.) Even if she is trained in combat, the film indicated that her peripheral vision is quite poor in that suit, making it difficult to spot threats, and the suit might also be muffling sound. The creature is also shown to be quite resistant to bullets, so running is arguably a better option than shooting. As for the shower, she does still need to remove sweat to prevent fungal infection (assuming that's still a thing).
It is never determined what kind of background she has, and compared to other films, I don't see any sense of outright carelessness on her part, other than perhaps going into a confined area of space perhaps, but then again you're trying to project military precision and tactics upon a survivor in an apocalypse.
A lot of legitimate technical criticisms have been brought up here, and I don't want to dismiss them, but I love this short as an exercise in creating a mood and tone while building a fascinating and tantalizingly incomplete world. It's a great seed that leaves the viewer wanting to learn more. I couldn't help but start filling in the blanks in my head.

Engage the threat?... _enough_ with the tacticool talk. 🤣 Was a bit dumb going into that building though, mind you, even outside she'd probably have died given the restricted vision in that helmet and the awkwardness of operating a bolt action rifle in that armour(?)
Well done. The practical and CGI were blended perfectly. I honestly could not tell the difference between the "real" and the generated stuff. Wide shots, overhead shots, pans, amazing work. The world looked real, and the character's interactions were seamless.
At about 7:01, the woman passes some newspapers and/or magazines strewn on the ground. This would imply that the apocalyse (whatever it was) happened only a few days before, since paper degrades fairly quickly. Then a little later, at 7:47, she comes upon the skeleton of some large animal. It would take three to six months for a large animal to be completely stripped to its bones. This is an inconsistency. Problem: A vacuum tube radio is not starting up in an instant... that particular model would need five to ten minutes to become operational. The effect could've been quite nice, she turns on the radio then goes and pours herself a coffee or some water, the radio slowly turns on, the volume and noise increases building up on the scene, she gets back on the chair... just saying as you clearly like mixing in old tech with apocalyptic scenarios. And I actually agree that those old radios could still work very well in such a scenario.

Insulting to any intelligent person. See can barely see out of her helmet, yet goes inside Into a dark place when a treat appears. She wastes two shots outside where the threat was minimal, (bullets are just growing on tree so it's ok to waste them), and when she's face to face with radioactive albino monster, she just stands there. All the cool set dressing, costumes and production design in the world cannot save you from a dumb script. The old twilight zone episodes still resonate despite zero special effects because they were smart and never insulted the intelligence of the audience. Props to dust for funding these but they need to be more judicious in the scripts hey green light.
Add to this the ammunition for machine gun (which she does not have) slung over her shoulder while she uses only a rifle and a pistol in the belt holster. In fact, no normal person wore a few kilograms of unnecessary ammunition. The idea for the film is interesting, but some details are unfinished and annoying.
Seems like everyone of these shorts deals with an “End of the World” dystopian future. Can anyone imagine what it will be like if we just keep going on and progressing? Let’s consider all the movies in the past, dealing with what they believed Today was going to look like. Everything from the “Jetsons” to “2001: Space Odyssey” to “Back to the Future”. No one got it right. Hell, Star Trek is closer. Flip phones, computers playing music, IPads...
I concur. In fact, an engineer friend and I ( biochemist) spent some time designing a world of the future. We had no trouble fitting 100 billion people into Texas with the rest of the world for agriculture/aquaculture, mining, energy production and recreation outside the megalopolis.
Every major science fiction prediction usually ends up being wrong. It's almost always because they are about some sort of apocalypse. The science fiction that is about progress (like star trek) are the ones on the money. Go watch Bicentennial Man if you want to see the future.
this is disturbing. you really did a job on me, I identified with this woman's survival struggle, her loneliness and courage. then, she dies so quickly and so uselessly, I'm guessing to be food for that... thank you for creating this incredible experience. I can't forget it.
Technically brilliant! The story is so good that you forget that you're watching a created world, and the visuals are seamless. I'm impressed with the depth of detail. It's all the tiny things you don't realize you're noticing, that makes a world believable.
Big lesson here is that everything you do is essentially a big waste of time. What is this movie trying to tell us? Life in apocalyptic state is hopeless if invaded by monsters or don't mess around with weapons? If somebody knows tell me.
You should avoid reading pulp era fiction then. Some Howard and Lovecraft stories can be rather heavy in the descriptive text, while the actual story could be summed up in just as short a time if condensed into film script.
kurtb8474 The visuals and unanswered questions had me very interested until the monster came into play and started chasing her. The acting was terrible and the effects seemed cheap and last minute not to mention they answered none of the questions first set up, having unanswered questions is not a bad thing but you need to answer some to have the ending feel like an ending.
Azure Tiger writing is very different from cinema. In writing being descriptive can be your best tool. This seems less like a short film and more like a test of color correction editing.
Why though? Why cant you simply do, what you are good at and enjoy? When your personal favour is in story based movies, thats cool. But if someone just wants to make beautiful films with great art direction, thats a niche too and there certainly will be people who also enjoy this.

lost the count of whispering myself "this is my best one" while on Dust.
🤣🤣 my thoughts exactly
Belt of ammo and a bolt action rifle? Pretty sure those don't go together.
If they are the same caliber then you can strip one round off the belt at a time. Can be used as an easier form of transportation in belt form.
The belt is not connected to the rifle, it's being used as a bandolier. Duh.
But it's still way too much bullets for a single trip/scout. Not practical at all. Plus it really weighs.
@@Maervyn you can never have too many bullets.
@@brianjungen4059 beat me to it. Would've been way better off with a stripper clip bandolier though. Getting bullets out of links sucks balls.
That helmet narrowed her vision and limited her directional hearing, and the harness her ability to move dramatically.
I think the helmet was needed due to the toxic atmosphere.
Thick walls and lots of paper for fire making.
She has looted walmart already.
As for the shower, she does still need to remove sweat to prevent fungal infection (assuming that's still a thing).
you've been conditioned watching too many movie stereotypes
It is never determined what kind of background she has, and compared to other films, I don't see any sense of outright carelessness on her part, other than perhaps going into a confined area of space perhaps, but then again you're trying to project military precision and tactics upon a survivor in an apocalypse.
@@Xydonus true, not to mention soldiers make mistakes and are susceptible to dying like anyone else

Yes like a plot
A lot of legitimate technical criticisms have been brought up here, and I don't want to dismiss them, but I love this short as an exercise in creating a mood and tone while building a fascinating and tantalizingly incomplete world. It's a great seed that leaves the viewer wanting to learn more. I couldn't help but start filling in the blanks in my head.
@Woochinatchika Kokillibolinov "Rich vacuous leftists"? What the hell are you even talking about? You do realize that this is a sci-fi short and not a political commentary, right? Or are you just spamming random videos to vent your anger?
@Woochinatchika Kokillibolinov So your personal social circle gives you special insight into how Dust finances their filmmakers and puts you in a position to judge their character as individuals? Wow. That's... "special."
Since you obviously have a personal gripe with everyone associated with an entire industry, why would you even watch the video, let alone make yourself look like an ass by making vague ad hominems about the people behind it?
Feel free to not answer, by the way. This thread is adding nothing meaningful to the discussion about the video.

And she's pretty slow on reaction...the creature peeked, ducked behind the corner then she fires...

Great visuals, but hey, it's a good story that's needed. OK as a showcase for CGI work, but as a short film, sorry it failed for me.
Right. EMP's don't take out vacuum tubes.
Perhaps the radio has a standby mode which keeps the valves warm.
That's right. Also a Geiger counter is not supposed to display voltages. They could have borrowed one for the film instead of that voltmeter.

The visual FX here are excellent, they made the film believable.
This seems to have potential for a tv series; it has plenty of room for world building.
Unfortunately the majority is very stupid, and this is what they like...

A+ for art and visuals, D- for story.
All visuals, no story. Should be the other way around. More story content, less emphasis on visual effects.
I agree.....no story...............made it end up feeling totally hollow..............
