    The fun thing about DIY is you can do small custom modifications like this that no commercial builder would ever have the time / thought process to do. Truthfully a lot of these take a LOT of time that we as owners don't mind committing and we will know it improves the livability a lot :). great to watch the progress on your project!

      Thanks so much! Very true, no builder trying to make any money would be taking the time to do any of these tasks without an expensive change order 😂

    Cool thing building your own! Awesome job, getting a lifelong education on the fly!

    It is so cool to know what will need to hang from walls while framing. I've been through a whole life trying to figure out how to fasten stuff with no stud where needed 😊. Don't forget bath fixtures like towel bars and tp holders.

      Haha yes now is the time for blocking! We will probably do a whole video dedicated to all the various areas of blocking prior to drywall

    On the pocket door, remember later that you can't mount anything on the wall where the pocket is (inside or out...) because it doesn't have any studs. Even hollow wall anchors can damage the door as it passes through the pocket.

      We actually will have two floating shelves that overlap the door frame! But planning some special steel to make it happen 👍🏻

    Cool customizations! I'd be worried about the pocket hole screws in some of the applications you used them in tho... especially the platform above the laundry room if it will potentially have a bed and hold people. Why not just toenail with GRK or simar structural rated screws? Faster, no predrilling, and properly load rated.

      Thanks! I didn't think it really warranted anything extra, if I needed to make another trip to the store I would've just bought hangers. It will more practically be a storage shelf than anything, too little headroom for even a kids bed now that I've climbed up there a couple times. But feeling how solid it is I have no worries on the strength. The screws I used are #9x2.5" general purpose, not the thinner pocket hole screws. I think there's 15 of them on the center three 2x4 joists, side joists nailed to walls

    Those screws cost around 10 times what nails cost. I'd have used your framing nailer for the furring strips. If you're worried about holding power, just use ring shank nails.

      @MasonDixonAcres  5 месяцев назад +1

      I was curious so I did the math, the screws are 5.2 cents each, nails are 2.7 cents each. So they are 0.93x more expensive 😁
      For the furring strips, I chose screws over nails due to no risk of splitting the 2x2, better control, better pullout resistance than a ring shank, and it was easy to pull a bowed strip tight. Worth it imo

    instead of 3/4 x 1.5 boards.. use 3/4 plywood and sheet rock on both sides super strong, can hang shelves on it [on both sides if needed] use pocket screws on the edge of the plywood every 10" around and you wont need any furring strips.. just a idea

      That's a good idea! Now I just have to stomach the price of a couple sheets 😖

    Think you need to put away the pocket screw jig until all framing is done. Seems like extra work compared to toe-nailing.

    I am so glad to see you are aware that using a "hand hammer" is not a good idea. I see so many RUclipsrs using "hand hammers" and "foot hammers". As someone in their 70's, with many joint problems, I can tell you that you WILL regret not taking a moment to get a real hammer or small sledge to move something.

    Do yourself a favor. Quit saying “The Amish Guys” and say the framers. You could be sounding prejudicial, when you probably aren’t. No doubt mistakes were made, but that was not religious based, but craft related
