I love this song, but honestly, don’t think it’s the best introduction. It doesn’t come close to blending genres as much as other songs and the abbreviated length doesn’t showcase Vessel’s songwriting & arrangement genius across genres. I think The Summoning, which is the song that broke them to the masses, would’ve been better, or Ascensionism which is personally my favorite song ever. Rain & Take Me Back to Eden as well.

I adore this band, but they are very lyrical in nature. Perhaps you would like The Summoning, Chokehold, Take Me Back to Eden, or Ascensionism more. They are all from the newest album and is where the band took off. I think this is a good song to introduce the band to new listeners as it's somewhere in between their newer and older sounds. But I believe those songs would grab you.

Also the offering is an amazing track. Pretty much a metal track but has Vessels writing all over it and great performance overall

I wouldn't have someone listen to "Take Me Back Eden" as one of the first songs they check out from Sleep Token. When exploring Sleep Token's music, I'd suggest saving "Take Me Back To Eden" for later. It's a beautiful culmination of their work and is best appreciated after diving into some of their other songs. There is a reason why that song is placed as one of the last on the album (which has the same name as the song itself) from which it comes from.

I think you will enjoy Hypnosis from the same album. It offers a bit more pay off towards the end where this song lacks it I personally feel

Check out The Summoning from the newest album Take Me Back To Eden. This is the metal album of the year. Worship❤

I keep hearing how mind blowing and amazing they are, and while they're excellent musicians, nothing they've done has hooked me yet. I feel the same as you. Still waiting for that one track to reel me in, but I haven't heard it yet even after being recommended several of their songs.

I've seen this band live (opening for BABYMETAL in 2019) and I'm of a similar opinion to you.. I don't dislike it but it hasn't really hooked me. Most of it just washed over me like this song here. I do remember a nice moment from that gig where it got more energetic and a bit black metal-y.. but most of it was like the song in this video
In my head I put them in a similar place to Swallow the Sun.. except Swallow the Sun pulls me in musically far more and has a beautiful contrast between their ambient and heavy moments. I should probably give Sleep Token's newest album a go since it seems to be getting lots of attention

I enjoy this song but I agree with everyone who says this isn’t the best intro. I would definitely check out Higher, Jaws, Hypnosis, or maybe even the Summoning for a better payoff/climax, catchier melodies, and more versatility and genre blending 🤟

It’s hard to pick the song that will draw you in more bc there are sooooo many options. I suggest the summoning as well that’s the one that caught the US by storm I would say or chokehold. Sleep Toke summoned the USA and we answered 😂 Worship

This band is going to take the world by storm. Alkaline is great but there is an extensive library. Please consider take me back to Eden. Their production is amazing and their songs feel so full. Once you get a hold on how good of artists vessel and II are, you'll be hooked.

The Summoning, The offering, Chokehold, Vore, Dark Signs, Granite, Aqua Regia.
I'm 45 and I'm floored like I was when I 1st heard Pink Floyd, Tori Amos, and Deftones.
    Give it another chance.
The problem is, it's a story arc and they dropped you into the middle of it. Having listened from the beginning to the end, it's a ride. ❤

I think this is a good score for this song. Although, I wouldn't sound as hesitant about the score as you did because I actually quite enjoy it and I would give it a similar score. I picked this one as a Prioritized Request because I think that it serves as a good intro to Sleep Token. It's not meant to be mind-blowing, just a sort of gentle start. I'm glad you didn't have actually anything negative to say about it, as I think "Alkaline" is very good. Also, the music video shows you what Vessel looks like, which is another good reason to watch it early, as none of the videos for their latest album "Take Me Back to Eden" feature any band members.
You're not alone in highlighting Vessel's vocals. People praise Vessel's vocals all the time, and in most cases it's one of the standouts from Sleep Token for them.
I made sure to bring up the American Alternative Metal band Issues that you reacted to last year because they were the band before Sleep Token that mixed in R&B and Pop with Metal. Although Sleep Token's "Alkaline" doesn't have R&B in it, they have other tracks that go in that direction, I thought it was worthy of mentioning Issues as another Alternative Metal band that are trying to expand the sonic range of Metal.
And it is interesting that you had a similar first reaction to Sleep Token here as you did with your first reaction to Issues with their song "Drink About It" - you thought both were very good and had nothing actually bad to say about them, but they didn't quite "hook" you. For those of you who are fans of Sleep Token and haven't come across the American Metal band Issues yet, or if you haven't caught David's reaction to "Drink About It" by Issues, you should definitely give it a watch. Here's the link for you below:
David's reaction to Issues - Drink About It: ruclips.net/video/QNCwOxNo1kg/видео.html
As I said, I picked "Alkaline" as an intro and will be submitting more Sleep Token for you to check it out. In fact, I also have to squeeze in more Issues as well, since so far, you only heard one track from those guys.

I had 100% the exact same reaction to Alkaline the first time I heard it just a little after the album came out. While I liked the song, it didn't blow my mind. It's well written, arranged, and performed, but it didn't give me a rush...didn't pull me in. After that, I listened to Hypnosis and The Offering (which I thought also were quite good)...while I enjoyed the musicianship, the songwriting, arrangement, and especially the drums, it still just didn't grab me...I listened to them a few times, but they didn't go on a playlist or anything like that. And so, I didn't really give them much thought after that...for over a year.
Then in January, Chokehold came out...and then The Summoning the next day...and I got pulled in. It just suddenly clicked for me. It ended up being Vore that really got me--I could not get enough Sleep Token...there was no going back. I had to go through their entire catalogue and listen to everything they ever did over and over and over...and I just fell in love with all of it.

This song was realeased on their second album, back in 2021 (If I recall correctly). Their third album is titled "Take me back to Eden" and was their third album which dropped in April of 2023.

Also; should give them another go, they have such a wide range in their music and tbh this one is on the low end imo. Would suggest Vore or Gods if you want some energetic throatpunching shit. Chokehold or Aqua Regia if you want some more melodic vocal display.

Sleep Token had a breakout year this year with their 3rd album Take Me Back To Eden. They made many 10 top metal albums of the year lists with it.
Some have joked ST made a new genre of metal..Sexy Metal.. its mainly all due to Vessels vocals. The blending of different styles of music is very real. Sometimes youll get an R&B flavor in a song that has heavy metal in it. They've also been described as a metal Imagine Dragons, I can kinda see that point. Very interested to see what they on the 4th album

Even if you don't react to them, listen to Take Me Back to Eden and Ascensionism in your own time. Spectacular. Alkaline is a good track but a very average one in terms of the Sleep Token back catalogue. This is a very special band.

I’ve seen this, and now Thread the Needle in the upcoming recordings. Surprised they were there first ones requested. I love Alkaline. But I think they have better songs for your first reaction

Your reaction is pretty one point, even as a long time fan it may take SEVERAL listens to truly grasp what all is going on in the song. Since your a metal guy definitely look at the Summoning, Vore, and Aqua Regia. I promise you won't be disappointed.

Sleep Token is odd for me. I can listen to them as background music if I’m doing something else. But I can’t listen in my car. Some songs I hate. Some I love. Did see them open for nothing more. They were much better live.
