As a younger collector just getting into the game I’d love a chance to collect some of the older omnis like this, hopefully we see this reprinted in the reasonably near future
@@Vitalhunter222 you probably could but you’d get a whole lot more out of it if you read the main book first. There’s a lot of plot threads that continue in the companion.
Two of my favourite Omnis! Everything Miller did with DD is classic stuff, but "Born Again" is one of the stories that changeg me from a kid reading comics into a comics fan. The Swedish translation of it was released in two magazines in 1988, when I was turning 14. I remember waiting for the second part (they came out three months apart), sneaking a peak on my way home and then finally reading it on my parents balcony on a warm June evening. It blew my mind! Superhero comics could be like this?! The story, the internal monologues, the art; all amazing. This alone makes Frank Miller one of the comic greats, no matter how hard he fell from grace afterwards.
The Daredevil by Frank Miller & Klaus Jason Omnibus was my first omnibus. I was surprised at how heavy it was and considered returning it. But instead I decided to give it a read, I’d never read Frank Miller’s main Daredevil run before, and I loved it. The entire experience. The size of the art, the details of the quality of Millers art, the continuation of issue after issue. The quality paper. It was all amazing. Now, a couple hundred omnibuses and counting, that might still be my favorite omnibus. It’s just so good. Everything about it is amazing. Frank Miller’s art has never looked so good. This is the perfect comic book.
I just read these a couple months ago. When Miller takes over the writing, you fully understand why it was such a groundbreaking transformational series in the 80s. Born Again is amazing, but like you I think Man Without Fear is the ultimate highlight.
those were the very first omnibuses I ever bought and basically, a starting point of my journey into collecting and reading comics. This brings back amazing memories. It's a great read for the upcoming Autumn.
That quote you mentioned was my favorite DD quote! "Born Again" is one of my favorite comic stories. And agreed that John Romita Jr. on JMS's Spider-Man is Bar none the best thing he's worked on!
This for me will always be the most legendary comic runs of all time.. offcourse these 2 omnis are my prized possessions- i might have read the Main omnibus around 5-6 times
Just finished these last night for the first time and I must say, damn. What a good read. I managed to get the main omnibus along with the first Lee/Ditko omnibus for a smooth $100 a piece. Probably my best find and prized omnibus possession. Personally, Born Again, and the Man Without Fear are exceptional pieces of work, it’s hard to pick one or the other. Really hope for everyone’s sake that this gets a reprint, because this is a must read for anyone.
Nice retro review. Born Again is my definitive Miller Daredevil, though Man Without Fear was my first introduction to the character in the early 90s. And, you know, everyone always points out the tragic love story with Elektra, but no one ever mentions the tragic love story with Heather Glenn, also going on at the same time.
Great video Omar, Daredevil by Miller and werewolf by night were my first omni's I ever got. Thank you Omar for getting me into them. Keep up the great content
Wow, I was just reminiscing about these omnis today lol. These two are my favorite omnis together, my favorite run of all time, and also has my favorite comicbook story of all-time, Daredevil: Born Again. Highly, highly recommend these to any reader!
Both of these omnis should be one of those evergreens from Marvel. You can never go wrong with these Daredevil classics from Frank Miller. Can’t wait to get the reprints when they come out as I’ve only got select story arcs in singles (Man without Fear) and TPBs (Born Again) 😎
I got these books and the Elektra Omni, all in great condition, for $234 on eBay. Considering how rare the DD Omni is, I think I got a pretty good deal. Edit: Okay, I don't have these first printings with the mini dust jackets, but they look really cool! Mine have the full DJs, and the red is a bit darker, so I'm guessing that was the second printing.
Some of the best Daredevil material of all time. If you’re in the US, the companion is still on Amazon through third party sellers. I just recently bought mine for about $60.
A reprint is definitely needed. Somehow gotta find space for the companion while its still in print. Frank Miller not only re-imagined Batman but also Daredevil and it works such talent. Thank you for the amazing video Omar
Sexy books, I should finish reading my copies. Missed out on Ed Brubaker's omnis. Would be smart as hell if Marvel reprinted his run as one big hardcover. Just like how they could've done with his Cpt America reprints.
Last year I succesfully collected the full daredevil run in various formats from the very beggining to frank millers run. I went with the box set because I got a very good deal on it, but maybe one day I'll upgrade. Thanks for showing it.
Excellent choice for a retroview sir! I just re-read these volumes myself! CLASSIC, must read DD material for sure. I've picked this material up in multiple formats over the years. Fun Fact: the DM version of both volumes had the standard full dust jacket with classic DD cover images (DD#181 for the main omni and DD#227 for the companion). These have been reprinted a couple times in the past and only fell OOP due to the more recent release of the DD by Miller box TPB box set. I'd be willing to be that once the box set runs its course, we'll get reprints of these volumes again.
My first printings had the DM style jacket covers which follows the use of original cover art graphics. This, X-Men, and Spider-Man were my jam back in the day. Enjoying your retroviews!
I read it last year. Perfect build-up for Daredevil made by Frank Miller. His artwork is adorable, writing is excellent even by today's standarts. Unfortunatelly, i haven't The Man Without Fear, because in my country Daredevil by Miller, Bendis and Waid didn't sell well at all, so we don't have a Miller companion hardcover, but only 3 volumes of original Frank Miller run (and also Born Again TPB). I wish one day the local publisher release it, because i don't like reading in scanes and don't have so much money for english omnibus even without delivery. Great stuff!
Clicked this fully thinking it was reprint for these omnis. You should maybe stick the RetroView label at the front? Good content as always thanks Omar!
Yeah, I have those although one of mine has a printing error. I'm upgrading to the Masterworks that are currently in the middle of collecting this run.
Great retro-view and i'm glad you did it on these books. Hope Marvel sees it and decides to reprint them as I'm missing the prime DD book. Such seminal and amazing work with Born Again and MWF as the highlights. Miller, Mazzachelli and JrJr were on fire with these stories. Weird design decision for the spines but i guess its because its "Miller" they decide to do something different?
I am hoping to buy and read the companion book for the first time so I watched this video. I already have the DD by Frank Miller omnibus and I enjoyed that book.
Great review and having read some of the current daredevil runs by Chip and others its interesting that Frank Miller had daredevil kill a few guys in his lol which I just find funny how comics can do that to characters back in the day before they had their whole no kill rule like spiderman and batman
When it’s time for Marvel to reprint these books, maybe they can tweak the dust jackets to move the Marvel Omnibus brand to the top of the spine. These are titles that should always be available to collectors and first time readers.
If the companion had included the Elektra Lives Again OGN, it might go down as one of the best omni's ever, as is Born Again is essential & I enjoyed Man Without Fear collecting it as it came out in my youth ... I'll have to snag one of those someday
I got the 3 trades with similar covers to the Omnibus and I'm hoping not only for an Omni reprint but also books in the Epic Collection. Who picked up the title when Frank Miller first left DD? Was it Dennis O'Neil?
Omar love this! Could you PLZ speak w David about MONSTER SIZE frank miller daredevil MADE for direct market only. I think it would sell huge among the direct market. Imagine Byrne/Austin X-MEN Monster Size!!!
Just laughing to myself imagining this being the original spine-gate, haha. I was able to grab this companion (the one with the normal omnibus spine) for real cheap a few years ago because some dudes wife was selling his collection off 🤫
Aqui no Brasil, o omnibus do miller e do Janson foi dividido em três encadernados, a editora panini so começou a produzir edições omnibus esse ano, mas as três edições são bem bonitas.
Thanks for the retro-review! This run got me into reading Daredevil. By the way, "Marvel likes to keep a standard format, and stick to it?" - but none of the new spines align and invidual volumtes have no uniformity to them!?
I'm 300 pages into the Miller omnibus, where the first 150 pages were written by Roger McKenzie. I actually really liked McKenzie's issues and so far I'm not really seeing how Miller massively overhauled the book. The two runs seem roughly equal. Maybe Miller's genius starts to shine later in this book, but so far I'm feeling like McKenzie deserves more love than he gets.
I enjoyed reading McKenzie's issue too. That's what made the DD by Frank Miller Omni so awesome for me. I enjoyed the stories even when Frank Miller was not the writer.
I think they (Marvel) will defintanty reprint this omnibus again at some point (I think it's had two or three already?) poeple will just have to be patient. This run his helled in such high regard it would be silly of them not to hahaha XD.
I would love to own these in hardcover and part of me badly wants to pull the trigger and pick them up when they pop up on ebay, especially volume 1, ( damn hard to find now) but I refuse to pay an arm and a leg(sometimes up to $200.00+) and you just know key books like this in comic history will get another reprint at some point.
I hope when they reprint these Daredevil omnis they update the covers. Never liked them. Presumably there will at least be a variant option so I really can’t wait how they do it.
I'm just wondering how come these omnibus are never evergreen especially with daredevil this is one of the most famous runs as far as I'm aware with Frank Miller I think they should be evergreen to be honest
Reprint! Reprint! I've got these in the form of 3 paperbacks, but would definitely buy them in omnibus format. Perhaps they can be reprinted when Daredevil is reintroduced into the MCU of during the next anniversary, which could be the 40th anniversary of Elektra's death in 1982. Dang it Omar! I thought we were getting a reprint for a second😭 here's hoping this retroview will turn Marvel's gears though
Fingers crossed it’s just to hype us for a reprint!
same here, I was really hoping this was news that we were getting a reprint lol
Same here. One of the top reprints I'm waiting for.
Was sure it was Omar saying a reprint was coming... :(
Good news it's being reprinted now!
I need a reprint of these. The actual omnibus has been out of print for years. Companion is still pretty cheap
Good timing. Finished the first volume and i’m halfway through the companion.
@@Vitalhunter222 you probably could but you’d get a whole lot more out of it if you read the main book first. There’s a lot of plot threads that continue in the companion.
I NEED these in my life! Come on Marvel, you know you want my money!
One of my favorite runs and two of my first omniboo purchases.
these were great.
Well my heart rate blew up when I thought this was being reprinted ....now I'm sad...damn retro review lol
Wish they would reprint these (and the Ed Brubaker Dare Devil) all of them are no longer availabe in my region.
And the Mark Waid run.
Hopefully we can get a reprint! Currently trying to get every issue of the series for reasonable prices. Let it happen Marvel!
Daredevil is my #1 hero and I have the Miller stuff in trades but man I may need to upgrade if these get reprints. Loved seeing the oversized

those were the very first omnibuses I ever bought and basically, a starting point of my journey into collecting and reading comics. This brings back amazing memories. It's a great read for the upcoming Autumn.
What timing! I just picked up a copy of the 1st printing of the omnibus locally.... can't wait to tear into it!!
We could use some Daredevil reprints, I don't think anything is available anymore
That quote you mentioned was my favorite DD quote! "Born Again" is one of my favorite comic stories. And agreed that John Romita Jr. on JMS's Spider-Man is Bar none the best thing he's worked on!

You got it!
Would love to see the companion omni get a reprint!
So, what is the difference between omnibus and omnibus companion? Btw. I need a reprint of the first omni!
Omar when will we get a reprint!
I got the 3 trades with similar covers to the Omnibus and I'm hoping not only for an Omni reprint but also books in the Epic Collection. Who picked up the title when Frank Miller first left DD? Was it Dennis O'Neil?
Who did the next best on DD? Bendis? Nocetti? Zdarsky? I'm curious to see what you think
Yes, it was Denny O'Neil, he was soon joined by artist David Mazzuchelli.
Should’ve included the Elektra omni in the retroview. Better yet, also Elektra Lives Again.
Omar love this! Could you PLZ speak w David about MONSTER SIZE frank miller daredevil MADE for direct market only. I think it would sell huge among the direct market. Imagine Byrne/Austin X-MEN Monster Size!!!
Thanks for the great video!
I think part one of Born Again is issue #227, not #226
Just laughing to myself imagining this being the original spine-gate, haha.

I hate that everything I want a book, it's gone lol
Aqui no Brasil, o omnibus do miller e do Janson foi dividido em três encadernados, a editora panini so começou a produzir edições omnibus esse ano, mas as três edições são bem bonitas.
We should get reprints of these omnis for 2024, Daredevil’s 60th anniversary
2023 is when the first one will be reprinted.
Thanks for the retro-review! This run got me into reading Daredevil.
By the way, "Marvel likes to keep a standard format, and stick to it?" - but none of the new spines align and invidual volumtes have no uniformity to them!?
Omar: Marvel like to keep a standard format.
Marvel: Hold my beer.
Ahem... I meant the size of the little DJ. :)
Great overview. Do you have the Master of Kung Fu omnis? I'd love to see a retroview of those omnis too.
It’s the change up and the building of the mythos that has long been established as part of Daredevil.
I enjoyed reading McKenzie's issue too. That's what made the DD by Frank Miller Omni so awesome for me. I enjoyed the stories even when Frank Miller was not the writer.
Just check CGN and the companion is out of stock :/
Frank Miller, Ann Nocenti and Dg Cheister really were the best Daredevil writers.
stan lee was the best Gene Colan best art imo
Would you be intrested in reviewing the daredevil by Frank Miller boxset? I know it's not like new or anything now
Possibly an unpopular opinion, but I read these back to back and preferred the companion overall to the first volume.
@Grant Sherrill I make it a habit of having great respect for anyone who notices. Cheers dude! Lol
I think they (Marvel) will defintanty reprint this omnibus again at some point (I think it's had two or three already?) poeple will just have to be patient. This run his helled in such high regard it would be silly of them not to hahaha XD.
Is this good from the start or should scip to were Miller takes over the story?
I would love to own these in hardcover and part of me badly wants to pull the trigger and pick them up when they pop up on ebay, especially volume 1, ( damn hard to find now) but I refuse to pay an arm and a leg(sometimes up to $200.00+) and you just know key books like this in comic history will get another reprint at some point.
Just wait :)
Would the Batman Caped Crusader and Dark Knight Detective stories be considered sequels to Frank Miller's Batman Year One?
Masterpiece 😎
I hope when they reprint these Daredevil omnis they update the covers. Never liked them. Presumably there will at least be a variant option so I really can’t wait how they do it.
I'm just wondering how come these omnibus are never evergreen especially with daredevil this is one of the most famous runs as far as I'm aware with Frank Miller I think they should be evergreen to be honest

Hoping for a reprint
Reprint! Reprint! I've got these in the form of 3 paperbacks, but would definitely buy them in omnibus format. Or if they'd like to rush, this year, 2021 would the 40th anniversary of Miller's take over as writer.
My biggest disappointment with "The Man Without Fear" storyline is that Daredevil/Matt never calls Elektra "Olive oil" as he did in Daredevil #168. I have always wondered why Frank excluded that.
Excellent overview. A question Omar: the nearmintcondition code is still valid at Walts Comics?
It sure is, brother.
Reprint por favor, I ordered it once and the store just mislabeled it and it was the companion...
Still hoping for a reprint!
These are some of the best comics ever. I know Daredevil is certainly popular but it seems like he's nowhere near as popular as Batman, Spider-Man, or Wolverine and I think that's dumb.
I mean, yeah I'll admit I love those characters maybe just a scoosh more than Daredevil but just a scoosh.
This run and the Brian Michael Bendis & Alex Maleev run are incredible and I wish more people knew about them.
Where is the reprint for this?
