😂 I think my partner also does not shy away from letting everyone n anytime anywhere about my blanket hording😂 I can bet my life he will just start if topic of blankets comes up.. he holds my hand now while we visit bedding section in any store
Thank you for this wisdom. I have an extremely hard time with this. "Justin Case" syndrome runs deep in my family. My mother and grandparents lived in communist Cuba where they often went hungry and simple things like toothpaste were scarce, so when they finally escaped to the states, they developed a serious hoarding tendency. My siblings and I were sort of indoctrinated into this way of thinking: "What if we lose our freedoms? What if the country becomes communist and you can no longer buy things? What if, what if, what if?" The Justin Case method is based on an underlying fear of the unknown, which can be difficult to resolve. However, I really believe it's not worth it to live with a burden of belongings out of fear and anxiety about the future. It's better to trust in Jesus and live in freedom, knowing our Heavenly Father takes care of us no matter what.
I completely agree. I have a hard time with “just in case” as well b/c I grew up extremely poor and you always learned to hold onto things b/c you never knew if you would be able to afford it again. I still have the same mindset now.
@@shellbell2167 Yes! And that mindset was reinforced during 2020, when you couldn't find rubbing alcohol and toilet paper in the stores. Now there are videos telling us that this year flour, sugar, rice, etc are going to be scarce & hard to come by. I refuse to participate in the panic, stress, and anxiety. I think we'll all be just fine.
This is THE BEST!! I think I’m going to make “Justin Case” labels to put on items during my next decluttering just to make it super visible how many things I’m keeping “just in case.”
Okay you two, this was THE funniest video! When Tom addresses you as “Minimal Mom” while burying you with your pile of throw pillows, hilarious! I just really enjoy you guys being so real. This definitely enlightened my perspective and I so appreciate your guidance through these (many) decluttering stages. I’m going to see those name tags ALL over my house. Another very helpful video. Thanks for the laughs!
Lol, I just threw out most of our throw pillows because the first thing the kids do every morning is throw them on the floor! Plus they were getting stained and dirty and grossing me out. I kept the one with a removable cover so I can wash it!
Every time I think, “I’ll keep it, just in case”, I hope I think of Tom popping out of random places and get rid of said item! Thanks for being a good sport, Tom!
Right! I actually lol also! And “on my gosh! That’s a lot of pillows”. And I can’t even get my husband to allow me to get a single throw pillow. I was allowed a body pillow for our bedroom. But that’s it. 😂
Dawn to Tom: "We're heading out to the garage after this" [i.e. the pillow throwing]. One of my new favourite videos for sure!!! Love the mix of decluttering wisdom combined with humour. Living in the Right Here, Right Now is something I'm really trying to work on this year. The Minimal Mom has been & continues to be a huge inspiration for me!!
Yes, I will show this to my husband... and he'll tease me, until he hears Dawn say "We're heading out to the garage after this!" ha ha ha... he won't have much to say....
What I hear is I've been letting "Justin Case" live here rent free, for years or decades. Humor & helpful, I can appreciate. Alright Mister you've been warned.
This was a memorable, funny and helpful video. My husband is a “Justin Case” kind of guy BUT he has decided to be ruthless going through all the stuff he has saved over the last 20 years. One cargo trailer has been filled and is gone. We are working on the second one. I think this is more like Swedish death clean which i totally agree with because my siblings and I got stuck cleaning out 40 yrs of my parents’ stuff and my grandmother’s and grandfather’s stuff. I joke about it being child abuse. It is not a good thing to have to deal with all this stuff after someone has passed. I do not want to leave all my useless stuff for my children to have to go through. I have learned, that just because something meant something to someone else, doesn’t mean it holds the same value to me. I don’t have to keep it for them now that they are gone.
"just because something meant something to someone else, doesn’t mean it holds the same value. I don’t have to keep it for them now that they are gone." My husband passed away 6 months ago, and a lot of his "treasures" and "Justin Cases" are what is cluttering up the house. A part of me feels like a cad for getting rid of things that meant so much to him, so I really needed to hear this. Thank you
My parents passed & my mom had an old glass dish with a lid. Like fancy for candy. It was green & ornate. It had been broken into many pieces & she had glued it back together. I believe it was her mom's or grandma's. I let it go but later felt a pang of regret for not caring more about something she cared so much for. But keeping it would have also made me sad. My mom was a sentimental hoarder & so am I. I know she would want me to have peace & be free of the chaos of too much. I hope I can get there. 🙏
This video had me laughing so hard 😂😂😂 “You’re hoarding pillows, Minimal Mom!!!!” 😂 Such great points though! My just in case items are those one-use kitchen gadgets!
So funny! And I was literally wishing for a cherry pitter this morning. I haven't used one since the 90's and there is absolutely no way I wish I still had the old one. I'm just going to use a knife.
@@lauranewman564 😂😂 I have a cherry pitter I’ve never used… and a shrimp peeler and a tofu press… I swear, I follow your advice in other areas of my house & life, Dawn! Time to follow this video!
This is one of my favorite videos! I also thought Tom was going to pop out of the cabinet!😂 My parents lived through the depression & kept everything! But didn't realize the extent until after they both where in Heaven. After my daddy passed my mother would not let me go through his things. She passed away in 2022, 12 years after him. For the past year I have been going through their belongings. Paper work from the 1950's, 6 closets of clothes of all sizes, etc. They even kept broken items in the outdoor shed! I guess those items were the"Justin Case" a part was needed for another item. I get the tendency to keep everything honestly & trying so hard to break it! Not only am I trying to declutter, I'm also battling the sentimental aspect of the items I'm decluttering. Everytime I begin to declutter an area and get overwhelmed, I pull up one of your videos to encourage me during the daunting task! This video gave me not only the encouragement needed for today, it gave me a great big chuckle that was much needed! Thank you so much Dawn for all your videos and Tom "Justin Case" too!
This is MY FAVORITE of years of your videos! Both bc it truly is my own biggest 'hang up' & also bc seeing the two of you interacting in this super Fun loving way- makes my heart happy for your marriage & for your children. Bless you Dawn. You are a bright soul, helping others in a very real way.
A couple of years ago I recognized that, although I was pretty minimal, I was susceptible to trying out new hair care products that I ended up not liking and then also not throwing out. So I made a rule: if you purchase a hair care product, you have to use it up before you go back to what you love. Well…, as you might imagine, I’ve purchased a new product exactly once in the last 2 years. I didn’t like but I used it and learned a lesson. I’m 64 and still getting it figured out ladies!
After the closet - Oh, no! Tell me he did not cram himself in the cabinet! 😂 So grateful for both of you. I guess it really can be that ridiculous when we listen to our own, "Justin Case!"
I struggled with baking pans and supplies for holiday baking. I started listening to you last year and finally last week I let all that go. No one in my family wants to make cut out cookies including my granddaughter. They are happy with bar cookies. I feel relieved. It was my tradition with my mom and sister and they are gone, time to move forward.
The pillow scene was hilarious! I love the name tags on everything. I think if I went around and did that, it would bring a lot more light on some items that should go! I did give away an aspirational/just in case/$$$$$ sunk cost grill today. After many purchased and lightly used grills over my adult life I have finally admitted to myself that I’m not someone who wants to grill out. Invite me to a barbecue and I’m all in but I don’t want to do it 😛
Ohhh, I had a grill that I loved and used all the time, but it needed a freshen up, a few new parts, but hubby insisted we buy a new one. It doesn't grill the same. Everything is either burnt or raw. Can't seem to keep an even heat. So frustrating!
I promise that in 4 weeks time when I hand in my PhD thesis I will look around my life at all the things I kept in case I had time when it was done and be honest about them. I've been working on this thesis for a third of my life. So many other things I put off because of the guilt of doing things that weren't work or thesis (so I did nothing instead). Need to mourn and let go of all those 'future selves' which will never be and be happy with who I became instead.
Hardest stuff for me is actually the stuff you never show on your channel. We struggle with tools, screws, gardening supplies, decorating supplies, DIY stuff mainly.
There was a video you made some time ago where you were in the bathroom and you had people open their banking apps and then recheck their balance when they were finished decluttering. That has been monumental in my decluttering progress. COMPLETELY changed the game for me. And unlike many others who have said they don't regret decluttering things, for me, there have actually been MANY times where I was like, "OH NO! I wish I didn't let that go!" HOWEVER, I would never ever ever ever ever go back and undo my progress for those things. Because even though I wish I had them when I was looking for them.. I can barely recall what they were now!
Oh my, I was raised by grandparents that lived through the Great Depression. Needless to say, the save for a ‘rainy day’ is ingrained pretty deeply. I do have more inventory than I need and it is a major job to keep it all sorted and stored. I am, one category at a time, paring it all down. Thanks for all the cheery support and inspiration!
My grandparents and parents went through WW2 - Justin Case was relentlessly present in their homes...and we have to deal with all that stuff since they passed 🤦🏻♀️
Now every time I think, "just in case" I'm gonna visualize this video! Thank you for making this video because "funny" sticks in my brain and I REALLY needed this one. Tom was great by the way
Yup I think this is a huge issue. It is for me and it’s my biggest problem. Growing up poor we never tossed out anything “just in case” BECAUSE we didn’t have the money to buy another one. We did have a garage that was big enough to store stuff so space wasn’t an issue. Also my dad was a mechanic so he had plenty of room to fix neighbors cars and ours too. That’s rare now days. I don’t have a big garage. It’s big enough for the washer& dryer and for tools but that’s all. It’s not even big enough for a car even if it was empty! I’m 100% disabled and I’m on a really tight budget SO the “just in case” thing is a huge THING for me and the financial situation I’m in. I’m going to be praying A LOT for God to help me and to help others when I put things in the donation boxes. I’m so glad you mentioned emergency stuff. I lived through the Northridge earthquake and if we didn’t have the emergency stuff we would have been in a BAD place. Since we had that stuff we were able to live through the 3 weeks of having nothing except for what we had. PS I do wish I could have a garden and that’s for MANY reasons too. It used to bring me calm but now being disabled it’s just a dream.💔
There IS wisdom in preparing. You do what YOU need to do... just organize it some. You know from experience to have items on hand. Perhaps a local/ near you gardener will share their garden bounty with you. God sees and knows. You are not forgotten. 💕
That was so good! Yes, even at 57, I can hear my mom when I throw out something that’s “perfectly good”….I’ve literally got yelled at by my mom-coincidentally she’s very boarder line hoarder…I like your take & also heard someone say “stop keeping things just bcuz of what you paid for it, the $$ has been spent, you either wear it/use it or give/get rid of it”…simple concept to practice .. thank you & Tom for the entertainment 👏👏
For me at my age hard things to get rid of is all the stuff that I don’t want my daughter to have to deal with when I’m gone. I’ve learned most peoples kids don’t want all the prized treasures we loved. I’m learning to just “use” the new towels, so to speak. ☺️ Loved this video.
I'm at this stage, too, and it is difficult for sure! It is much easeir if I keep the kids in mind and what they will want and not want 'some day'. Let's hope we both live a long and healthy life. 😊
It is perfectly sensible to have lots of pillows, lol! :) They are both decorative and practical. And they bring much joy! They are pretty, it is comfy to throw yourself in a pile of pillows, you can have pillow fights, and you can make your blanket fort super comfy. Pillows are a necessity!
My mom grew up after the depression and everything is kept just in case. It is so hard to convince her she can go to the store and replenish because why throw out “good stuff”…all the way down to the expired medications, expired canned foods, etc. I keep on having to promise I won’t throw away things that are good without running it by her. We started decluttering the house she and my dad have lived in for the last 50 years…married 56! Needless to say, it’s taking FOREVER, but I’m getting to spend a lot of time with her which I cherish♥️ Thank you for giving me guidance throughout this process 😊
My grandmother kept a "flat" (12 cans) of each: peas, green beans, creamed corn and beets under her bed. She was very good about rotating her stock and she & my step-grandfather went to the store EVERY DAY to replenish anything they had used. When I asked my Dad about it, he said they were SO poor during the Depression, my grandmother told him she vowed to never be without a full cupboard again. Those times impacted people for life.
That’s the thing. Once you have an instance where times are tight & you can’t just go get it if you need it even if it’s a thrift store, it’s hard to get rid of stuff. Or if there’s a history of last minute demands. Sure I only wear Khaki pants once every 5 years, but every time I need to wear them I’ve given zero notice from those demanding I wear them for work or whatever & what if I’m running low on funds at the time? My brain can’t get past that it’s easier to keep 1 pair of pants “just in case” than face the possible stress of getting it last minute or when funds are low.
Both my parents grew up in the depression, dad was in foster care as well. So Justin Case was the redheaded step child in our family. It's really hard to kick Justin to the curb, but Dawn is helping me get there! EXCEPT, this weekend, a holiday weekend, we were doing some home repairs, and hubby needed some stupid part, and I had one in inventory. Went to my toolbox, pulled the part out and danced across the kitchen floor singing 🎵🎶 I'm a hoarder!🎵🎶🤣🤣😂 30 second because of Justin, whereas a trip to the store would have been 3 hours and $6 in gasoline to get there! Oye!
Who knew the acting abilities you and Tom have! The way he gripped and convinced you was very effective! Very true to how we are when we try to declutter and keep so much just in case. Despite owning very little, throw pillows are an absolute necessity for me.
OMG I almost thought he was going to squeeze himself into the bathroom cabinet! LOL:) You guys are too funny! Justin Case is my nemesis! It's so easy to get rid of the low hanging fruit, but these just in case items are holding me back. Thank you for the reminder!
I have enjoyed watching you for over a year and I have to say this "woke me up". I guess I hold on to things just in case my kids might need them someday or they'll come home and I won't have spare dishes or clothes that they can use. My eldest son will be 44 in July and I've been waiting for him and my other two children to "come back home". Well, they are not coming back home to stay. They have their own households. Justin Case is "leaving" too...Thanks to you two for helping me to really see the things in my house for what they really are. You made me laugh and got your point across and I thank you for that.
I just spent the long holiday weekend purging, shredding, organizing, etc. I not only FOUND a purse pattern I bought "a few years ago", but I found the date when I bought it....on a 17 year old bank statement! All those old statements got shredded and the purse pattern is in the donation box! Like you, Dawn....I just never found the time. I also purged 50% of my craft supplies & 50% of my fabric. I'm on my way!
I think "just in case" items and what we buy specifically for preparedness are for sure different and I'm so happy to see you distinguish those two especially in times like these. Thank you!
Loved this video. My husband keeps talking me out of decluttering lately. He's very frugal and doesn't want to buy things again. But he had been noticing how nice it is when we have less stuff ☺️
Same! My husband keeps making the comments like “since you’re getting rid of all our stuff,” “how much did you spend on that and now you’re getting rid of it?” and “you won’t be happy until the house is empty.” It’s hard to go against!
I’ve been getting rid of a lot of my ‘just in case’ stuff, and I’ve found I not only don’t want to replace it, but I don’t NEED to. Makes me wonder why I had it all in the first place, and it’s definitely made me rethink how and why I buy things. I’ve managed to save quite a bit of money in just a few months time.
What a funny way to get a great point across!! I will forever think of Justin Case as a person now, lol. I love that you have so many pillows - showing that a minimal home can be cozy, comfortable and stylish AND still be minimal and easy to manage.
"Here. Could you hold this pillow?" LOL! You two are more entertaining than Hollywood flix. I know that's not much of a compliment considering the state of Hollyweird these days, but, really, you make my day! P.S. Dawn, your pillows take up more space than my fabric, so I think I really am a minimalist after all!
I NEED to share this with all of you, specially if you are struggling with "What if I need this"!! This happened to me this week and it has *changed my life*. I am an artist/crafter and i find it *EXTREMELY DIFFICULT* to throw things away, but this week, as I was holding up my crafting papers/die cuts/glitters/etc, asking myself "but what if I need this 😭!" A little voice entered my mind and whispered something so amazing, so profound and life changing that it gave me that "A-HA" click that I needed!!!!! And I'm going to share it with you all because this WORKS. Next time you're stuck & asking yourself "but what if i need this" just counter with this BEAUTIFUL sentence: *"Just use something else, then"* BOOM COMPLETE MAGIC. "what if I need this dress for an occasion ?" Just wear something else, then. "What if I need this patterned paper for a craft project ?" Just use something else, then. "What if I need this for that" just use something else!!! If you DIDN'T have that specific thing, you WOULD be using something else This phrase has been KEY in helping me declutter all unused items that I had difficulty parting with and I hope that this reaches someone who needs to hear it!!!
I have found that the rule of three works for me 🙂 i e I can either keep or purge 3 items at a time . Bizzarely just removing 3 items can make a big difference to a space . It only takes minutes so now I do this in every room every day 🙂 x
I got rid of decades of sewing supplies, fabric, the Singer sewing machine, and serger. An avid sewer in the past, I have survived. I also donated all my books to the Friends of the Library and now read only ebooks from the library on the Libby app, or the free ebooks as an Amazon Prime member on the Kindle app. I don't have to manage regular books in my house from the library, nor spend the time and gas to pick up and return them. I have the added bonus of enlarging the font to a comfortable reading level. After your hilarious video today, I, unfortunately, had to break up with Justin Case (even though he was quiet, he was sneaky!). Thank you for bringing him to my attention!!
Personifying just-in-case with Tom was brilliant! I WILL picture him telling me to keep something and it WILL make me more aware of my just-in-case argument with myself! You two made me laugh out loud!! 🤣😂🤣😂
So cute!!! I don't think we will ever think "Justin Case" the same ever again. Thanks for the fun visual.

I can think of so many things I've kept just in case! Make up, hair products, vitamins I don't even take, "painting clothes" in case I want to paint!! I've done so much decluttering but now I see I can peel away so much more!
I have been decluttering for awhile now, but during this video had an "AHA" moment! It is craft stuff. Particularly my supplies for counted cross stitch. I used to to it in the past, but I'm 63 and my eyes aren't as good anymore and realistically can't see myself doing it again. I will check with my ladies group at church and if no one wants ALL THE THREAD, it will be donated to the thrift store! Brilliant video Dawn (and Tom of course)! Lol love you guys. Thank you!
This was my “hoarding” thing too! I had one project that I’m stitching in a photo of myself and my son at about 3. He’s now 29 and it wasn’t further along. Epiphany: I found the completed project on eBay framed and matted, $30. It is so satisfying knowing I have it, but didn’t have to stitch it. Another is a really special project I was holding onto. Found that one too! For this one, I also found a blog where a woman kept track of working the project and it took her 690 HOURS! There are far too many other things I want to do, but having the finished projects gave me a really satisfying closure.
Exactly same as me! I loved doing my cross-stitch but my eyes are not as good now at 61. I did see a pair of magnifying glasses with a light on them in a post office brochure yesterday and thought now they would be good for my cross-stitch when I'm 70! haha
I loved seeing you and Tom interacting on this one. I've decided that "Justin Case" does not live here and if any of his stuff is here, it's got to go! Thanks!
This video made me laugh out loud! Your husband playing Justin Case was a riot. You did, however, bring up a lot of really good points. You have given me a lot to think about while I try to declutter my craft supplies...
This is one of your funniest videos. I love it. My Mom was deep into Genealogy, and my niece follows in her footsteps. My Mom died over 22 years ago. As I was going through books for a Garage Sale this weekend, I came across several Civil War books. I erased my was holding on to these books “Justin Case”. They are headed to the Garage Sale. Big Win !!
One thing that has helped me with my crafting is to ONLY buy things for the current project I am working on. Then I challenge myself to actually use those things and finish the project before moving on. In the past, I would buy all the cute stuff and then try to find a use for it. That is when the hobby becomes less fun and guilt can set in. We all have our weakness, Dawn. We will allow you some throw pillows.😀
The one piece of advice I have found the most helpful from your channel is to pass along items if someone else can make good use of it NOW rather than holding onto them until you might need them again. I started giving a majority of my oldest son's clothes to a family at church. By the time our new baby will need them we would have been storing them for over 3 years. Several children can use them during that time, and it feels good to share!
I am the Justin Case person so I needed this video. I save all kinds of craftable items Justin Case the mood hits me to craft and I might need them. I just turned 70 and I am starting to GET IT! I forget which channel I was watching that mentioned "SABLE" Stash Accumulation Beyond Life Expectancy. It has been on my mind ever since. Dawn, you said that nothing gets stored for free. Boy is that ever true. We have been paying storage fees most of our adult life for things we can't store at home and guess what; we can't use them AT the storage place and we have to decide what is there and when to bring it home in hopes of using it. It usually doesn't happen. We just pay to store it!
Excellent video! Requesting a video on what you store for emergencies (lighting, heating, food, etc) and how you decide what and how much. Thanks for considering! ♥️♥️
Tips for fancy knitters!! 1) stick to interchangeable needle set(s). Downsize tools and project bags. NO ONE needs 20 project bags. 2) don’t double up on knitting needles. If one size is busy on a dormant project, this will push you to unravel or finish it 3) don’t impulse buy yarn (except a couple sock yarns maybe) 4) keep a list of your favourite yarn dyers. Shop updates create a FOMO feeling but there is always beautiful yarn out there! 5) keep your stash contained: one bin or one dresser, whatever you are comfortable with 6) to get there, fear not donating or gifting some skeins. Some less fortunate knitters will love your fancy yarn and you will be making a difference! 7) embrace donating knits that you are not wearing. Clean, gleen, use a safety pin to pin a tag with care instructions and let it go to goodwill. 8) try to avoid creative burnout/competition/ guilt. For most, this means sticking to one project at a time. Love, a minimalist yarn dyer 🖤
I've got two small kids (1 and 4). Hearing you say that the time doesn't come just because the kids get older hit hard. Probably means I needed to hear it.
Truth. She's not kidding, take it from a mom of 4, who's kids are now 13, 19, 21, and 24. Time will only be consumed even more and in different ways as they grow. You would not believe the amount of "activity" that is offered and seems to be expected in this current world-view. And even if you don't succumb to the craziness of expectations your kids and their friends will keep you involved and busy anyway.😉
Yes, it's true. But it changes. Our kids are 14 and 16 and yes, we drive them to sports, we discuss more,... but it's different. I usually sleep through the night, I know (most times) what they want and need, we can talk about things and they don't need my attention 24/7. I remember the first few years being very tiring. I love having teenagers in the house. It's not always easy, but it's great. Invest in intentional time with your kids! Take care of yourself as well, whatever that means for you (alone time, friend time, declutter time,...😀) And enjoy every stage, because they grow up sooo quickly. It might not seem like it to you now, but if I think that our son will probably move out in 2 years, I wanna cry.
@@KarmaSlave717 agreed. Dawn mentioned in her last post growing hobbies vertically, meaning getting better and more detailed at one thing rather than having several different ones and bouncing back and forth. That really resonated with me now that my time is so very limited.
This is your finest yet. Personifying 'just in case' as Justin Case (dear Tom) was genius. This is the video that has done it for me. I'm just about to leave the season of having kids at home full-time (going to uni / college) and so I am ready to clear out 20 years worth of Justin's excused items. Books, tools, hobby craft kit. I struggle with paper (reference material) and costumes but I can apply the psychology to both where other logic, while as true and valid, has not quite excited me as much. Particularly useful was detailing your thoughts about your sewing projects and your mum's card craft i.e. not just whether to keep but if so, how much of it and where it is used are just as important. Thank you. I love you too.
The pillows cracked me up! One way to look at those is that you get to choose what you enjoy abundantly because you've gotten rid of the things that would obscure your enjoyment of the throw pillows. I was thinking as you were mentioning your mom's decluttering and simplifying her crafts about how she prefers, in retirement, to be surrounded by "the action" and it makes perfect sense. With three active kids in the home (I also have twins and a singleton! ages almost-7 and just-turned-5), I also love the idea of a room of my own, but I can totally see, once one has a home of one own (empty nest), that being with family when they are around would be preferable.
"You're hoarding pillows minimal mom!" I love the labels... That visual is hilarious & super helpful, to see how many Justin Cases are hiding everywhere. Thanks 😂😆
Hilarious!!! Great visual for future decluttering. 👏 I had a big bin of yarn. I was going to crochet when I retired. Never happened. I donated it to a rest home who was asking for yarn. It was a win-win!
The beginning of this video was hilarious! Tom played a good “Justin” 😆 This really helped me wrap my mind around the “just in case” items I hold onto.
I think it is travel gear that I keep just in case. I love to travel, and hate giving up the idea that I may not travel as much as I get older... Great video! Really creative, and Tom played his part so well.
I can never hear the phrase “ just in case” without thinking of someone popping out! I love the new angle you’re taking in your videos to make it funny and relatable like the whole episode with the garden and now this one- loving it!
I've pared down my craft items recently. I noted that the things I held on to became outdated, even some fabrics. This is especially true for electronics like sewing machines, photo printers, stamp pads, stamps! and scrapbooking supplies. They just looked old, and not vintage old. My scrapbooking "how to" books were old and had no embellishments in them. I gave a lot of the stuff away. Now I'm much like your Mom, I just want to do the hobby and not spend a lot of time looking for stuff and putting it away afterwards. Plus, now I work on a project until it's done. I don't start a new one until the one I'm working on is done. It's motivating actually.
This is the most creative, fun and figurative minimalistic video ever made! You are getting a superstar badge Dawn! Hats off for brilliant acting skills for both of you too 🤩
Returning to sewing when the kids get just a bit older..... I finally sorted through my "someday I will mend" basket and ended up donating a dress I made for my daughter when she was six. She had just celebrated her 30th birthday by that time! Another item that came to light was a favorite skirt which was part of a set - top and skirt and shorts - and by that time had been in my mending basket for 15 years! So now - I have a choice - I keep a mending basket - and try to designate 1 day a month to mend EVERYTHING in the basket - or out it goes! It's not perfect - but, hey, it's better than waiting 24 years for it to be mended! (the dress only needed one small rip in the hem fixed and one button replaced!)
YOU GUYS ARE THE BEST!!!! I love your acting abilities - and Tom is SUCH a good sport!!!! - my "Justin case" items are organizing/storage containers - even cheap ones from the dollarama - WHY do I keep them!!!!! I need a storage shelf/space for the empty containers!
I kept waiting for Tom to throw a pillow at you at the end of the video! Great job, Tom! And wonderful words of wisdom, Dawn. I’m in the process of thinning out my craft area- and I just parted with some punches I never thought I’d release. It is freeing. Thank you for the time you put into us hoarders!!!🥰
Isn't Tom a good sport!?! And yes, I do have that many throw pillows, fluffing my nest!!! ;) I hope you have a great day!!! - Dawn
The Pillows!! 🤣🤣
Good sport?!
I'm pretty sure he had more fun with it than you did!!! 😆😆😆
Just in case, you guys are so funny🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣!!
He's such a good sport. You two work so well together.
The "Justin Case" got me 🤣🤣🤣 best video!!
Tom throwing pillows at you and exposing you as a pillow hoarder was hilarious 😂
"These aren't all of them"... 🤣🤣🤣
They just kept coming! 🤣🤣🤣
😂 I think my partner also does not shy away from letting everyone n anytime anywhere about my blanket hording😂 I can bet my life he will just start if topic of blankets comes up.. he holds my hand now while we visit bedding section in any store
Haha... we all have our issues! 😂
Amen, sista. Jesus lives us and will care for us. He has promised.
This is THE BEST!! I think I’m going to make “Justin Case” labels to put on items during my next decluttering just to make it super visible how many things I’m keeping “just in case.”
Love this idea! You can write dates and it will work like the quarantine boxes
Anyone else think Tom was going to be hiding in the bathroom vanity and pop out? Too cute guys.
Lol! I was waiting for him to be curled up in there.
I did think that until I remembered how tall Tom is... I thought nope
Yes!!!!
Yes!! 🤣🤣
yees!
I saw a quote awhile back that said “throw pillows are the stuffed animals of adult women”. 😂 I like to fluff my nest as well!
For me it was baskets… I let that go 😂😂
I LOVE throw pillows
😂 I never thought of it that way! Maybe some truth to this.
I'll pass on the throw pillows, but earrings. You can never have enough earrings! (Yes, I have just two ears.)
“You can unsubscribe to Minimal Mom…” it’s not often I literally lol on RUclips, but That line made me LOL!
Tom has really gotten comfortable in front of the camera! Loved this!
I never laughed so hard as when Tom started throwing pillows "JUSTIN CASE". Hilarious!!! 🤣
I completely agree…hilarious ☺️
Me too!!
Yesssssss
Me too!🤣
He's a good sport!! "Justin Case"🤣
It's also fun to gift things NOW to friends and family that want and will use them. Otherwise, donate or recycle.
"just because something meant something to someone else, doesn’t mean it holds the same value. I don’t have to keep it for them now that they are gone."
My husband passed away 6 months ago, and a lot of his "treasures" and "Justin Cases" are what is cluttering up the house.
Say it louder for the people in the back! I love this.
This video had me laughing so hard 😂😂😂 “You’re hoarding pillows, Minimal Mom!!!!” 😂 Such great points though! My just in case items are those one-use kitchen gadgets!
I died 🤣
So Hillarious
And the cherry on top 🍒
The Wayfair commercial during the video with Kelly Clarkson ordering throw pillows because you can never have to many 🤣
This is one of my favorite videos!
I laughed so hard when Tom popped out of the closet, and even harder when he was under the bed!! 🤣🤣 Love you two!! 😄
My favorite part was when he was under the bed!
“YOU SPENT MONEY ON THAT!” 🤣
This is MY FAVORITE of years of your videos!
I thought the same thing! 😂
😂 I thought Tom was going to pop out of the bathroom cabinet! What a great skit
I did too!! 🤣
I was wondering about that too! I would have been VERY impressed! 🤣
Me three!
Yes me too!!! 😂😂😂
I was disappointed when he didn't. 😂
😂😂😂Tom and the pillows…the best ever.
Justin Case though. The struggle is real.
This was wonderful. Yes, Tom is a good sport. A Husband that will do anything for his wife is such a blessing!
Great!! Now every time I question something I’m going to picture Tom as “Justin Case” giving me the excuses to keep it. Lol
That was the goal, lol!!!!
You are perfekt. I am german, 67 YEARS OLD; and just now I am learning how to somplifie my home, my life. THANKS SO MUCH111
The pillow scene was hilarious!
How did you get rid of yours? I inherited one from the previous owners of my house and I haven't touched it.
So thankful for you and Cas and Dana. 43yrs of "inventory" leaving........ slowly but surely.
Well done on achieving your PhD!
@@paulavandieden8609 don't congratulate me just yet- so much to do and so little time!
Hardest stuff for me is actually the stuff you never show on your channel.
We struggle with tools, screws, gardening supplies, decorating supplies, DIY stuff mainly.
Okay, that was hilarious… Tom under the bed? The avalanche of pillows? Hysterical!♥️
Thank you Tom for making my husband realize my 6 throw pillows are not that bad 😄
That video was SO good!
I love it when Tom participates in the videos. You two are a great team :)
Tom's acting is incredible!! He will be signed up for a movie roll in no time
For me at my age hard things to get rid of is all the stuff that I don’t want my daughter to have to deal with when I’m gone.
Tom was having wayyyyy too much fun...!
Love you two! 😁
Needless to say, it’s taking FOREVER, but I’m getting to spend a lot of time with her which I cherish♥️
Thank you for giving me guidance throughout this process 😊
My grandmother kept a "flat" (12 cans) of each: peas, green beans, creamed corn and beets under her bed. She was very good about rotating her stock and she & my step-grandfather went to the store EVERY DAY to replenish anything they had used. When I asked my Dad about it, he said they were SO poor during the Depression, my grandmother told him she vowed to never be without a full cupboard again. Those times impacted people for life.
@@trumax33 We will all probably be keeping our stock of covid masks -- to the dismay of future generations!
Yeah well what's supposed to come in fall and winter, of food Shortages or anything due to inflation cuz that's not going anywhere!
Went to my toolbox, pulled the part out and danced across the kitchen floor singing 🎵🎶 I'm a hoarder!🎵🎶🤣🤣😂
30 second because of Justin, whereas a trip to the store would have been 3 hours and $6 in gasoline to get there! Oye!
Who knew the acting abilities you and Tom have! The way he gripped and convinced you was very effective! Very true to how we are when we try to declutter and keep so much just in case. Despite owning very little, throw pillows are an absolute necessity for me.
🤣 Wow, Tom missed his vocation. 👏 This was so funny. I bet you guys had loads of fun making it. I'd love to see the blooper reel. 😉😄
I’m all for a blooper roll too
Yes!!! Bloopers from this video please!!
Remember when Tom didn’t want to be in videos and did them grudgingly??
OMG I almost thought he was going to squeeze himself into the bathroom cabinet! LOL:) You guys are too funny! Justin Case is my nemesis! It's so easy to get rid of the low hanging fruit, but these just in case items are holding me back. Thank you for the reminder!
We already loved him -- but he was great in this!! 😆
Like you, Dawn....I just
never found the time.
Frugal and Minimal are good friends, especially if Trendy isn't around. Cheers!
Wow next level on the pillows 😆 as marie kondo says....as long as it brings you joy
Next time you're stuck & asking yourself "but what if i need this" just counter with this BEAUTIFUL sentence:
*"Just use something else, then"*
BOOM
COMPLETE MAGIC. "what if I need this dress for an occasion ?" Just wear something else, then. "What if I need this patterned paper for a craft project ?" Just use something else, then. "What if I need this for that" just use something else!!! If you DIDN'T have that specific thing, you WOULD be using something else
This phrase has been KEY in helping me declutter all unused items that I had difficulty parting with and I hope that this reaches someone who needs to hear it!!!
I have found that the rule of three works for me 🙂 i e I can either keep or purge 3 items at a time . Bizzarely just removing 3 items can make a big difference to a space . It only takes minutes so now I do this in every room every day 🙂 x
Good self talk...I will certainly try that....thanks!
Excellent!
Love it & will use "Just use something else then" in my decluttering ventures. Thx for sharing!
This is SO good!!!!!!
I did see a pair of magnifying glasses with a light on them in a post office brochure yesterday and thought now they would be good for my cross-stitch when I'm 70! haha
You are so creative, and Tom is a good sport. I appreciate you and the time and effort that you invest into your viewers’ lives.
I loved seeing you and Tom interacting on this one. I've decided that "Justin Case" does not live here and if any of his stuff is here, it's got to go! Thanks!
Brilliant!!! You got the message across loud and clear and with humour 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 well done you two
HAR-LAR-IOUS!!!! Love Tom's input... Justin Case!!
Tom is a sweetheart! You couldn't find a better playmate and video co-star! Lol! Love him! ❤
Could you do a video talk on vehicles? Ideas for thoughts of how to keep that clean and organized….. minimal?
This video made me laugh out loud! Your husband playing Justin Case was a riot. You did, however, bring up a lot of really good points. You have given me a lot to think about while I try to declutter my craft supplies...
This is one of your funniest videos. I love it.
My Mom was deep into Genealogy, and my niece follows in her footsteps. My Mom died over 22 years ago. As I was going through books for a Garage Sale this weekend, I came across several Civil War books. I erased my was holding on to these books “Justin Case”.
They are headed to the Garage Sale. Big Win !!
Y'all are to to cute. My husband and I enjoy y'all's playfulness. It's helping us learn how to be more playful in our relationship.
This was SOOO FUNNY! My husband is always saying just in case and he also says it doesn't take up that much room,
Love the 'be a human before a minimalist!' Absolutely.
“Justin Case” is why I declutter when my husband is at work!
OMG! I can't stop watching you two! You keep outgoing yourselves! Don't stop - Tom adds a great, goofy element to your production. Love it!!
If one size is busy on a dormant project, this will push you to unravel or finish it
3) don’t impulse buy yarn (except a couple sock yarns maybe)
4) keep a list of your favourite yarn dyers. Shop updates create a FOMO feeling but there is always beautiful yarn out there!
5) keep your stash contained: one bin or one dresser, whatever you are comfortable with
6) to get there, fear not donating or gifting some skeins.
Thanks 😃👍🙏
I love the name tags 😅 Tom’s acting debut 👌
Thank you for the laughs and encouragement! I am working on kicking Justin Case to the curb!!!👍😊
Same…it but really hard, but also kinda scared me that I’ll never have time again 😩 Definitely have to lessen my “hobby”stuff.
@@KarmaSlave717 agreed. Dawn mentioned in her last post growing hobbies vertically, meaning getting better and more detailed at one thing rather than having several different ones and bouncing back and forth. That really resonated with me now that my time is so very limited.
I know, I was like "nooooo!" Bubble burst. 😂
This is hilarious!! Love it when Tom joins you Dawn!!! It is always a good time!!😜😜
Tom IS such a good sport I was cracking up!
I'm prettymuch loving that you've incorporated some humor and honestly it's a great way of teaching! Haha plus I laughed through the whole thing!
Tom is so funny and I love your ideas….
Tom is a great sport!! He went from “don’t make us look weird” to Justin Case 😂❤
You guys are the best 😅
Tom played a good “Justin” 😆
This really helped me wrap my mind around the “just in case” items I hold onto.
Hilarious! Love Tom under the bed & throwing the pillows!!!!
I’m fortunate to have my own craft room. This past week I decluttered it. Now I have tons of floor space. Yay me
