    Thank you for posting this video! I purchased the relay, followed the steps, and it works perfectly! I had the chamberlain MYQ installed, in hopes that one day it would be "Alexa " compatible. Only to find out that Chamberlain wanted me to pay a monthly charge for the allowing my Echo device to utilize the equipment I had already paid $80 for! This was a great answer to that problem. I love it!

    Caution that you check all ewelink devices for a POWER ON STATE setting. Many can be set to ON, OFF, or LAST SETTING. If set to ON then, in the event of a power restoration after a power failure, your relay is ON and your garage door opens.

  • @gkfish

    Totally worked for me. Great instructions . Only minor thing was that you cannot command it to 'turn off' as that doesn't do anything. You make the point with the text commands that work in your video, but took me to pay a little more attention that 'turn on' or 'activate' both opened and closed the door. Thanks again for posting!

    Obtained device and went through steps and it works great with Alexa. I also purchased the GarageDoorBuddy Monitor. This device sends a notification to my phone each time the garage door is opened or closed. This way I know the status of the garage door and after going to bed, if I notice that the GDB Monitor indicates the garage door is open, I just ask Alexa to close it. No need to get out of bed.

      Hello FnJ Hannaford, Glad to hear this solution is working for you! I have just purchased a zig-bee sensor that states it will act as a tilt-sensor (wireless). I plan to show that on a coming up video if it works as intended. I'm hoping that if the sensor is tilted horizontally it will state the door is OPEN and when vertical, it will state the door is CLOSED. Here's the one I am talking about: amzn.to/2Um1zJJ I should be testing it by this weekend. Thanks for your comment. Todd

  • @DrFunFong
    @DrFunFong 6 лет назад

    Did it! I used small gauge speaker wire, seriously thought about tinning the leads. Single strand Bell wire would be easier. There was also some learning curve on how to tighten the leads on the board. The opening will open very wide if you loosen the screws completely then tease the opening down, giving you a wide opening, if necessary. Insert the lead ABOVE the metal compression plate, not below like I did, or you'll waste significant time. Were you able to find a small box to protect the board?

    This works great.. Love your videos... I've now customized mine to use the words open or close. I've only had one problem. Occassionally the door reverses.. I believe it's because the inching switch is staying on too long. I've never had the problem when I control the door with the regular transmitter or wall transmitter. Is there and option to regulate the inching switch? Also, I'd love any additional ideas about security to prevent someone from hollering through my window (I had it bolted partially open but have closed it now). I also need to investigate a wireless close or open indicator. I left the door up the other night. THANKS....

    So, did you try to yell Alexa to open the door from outside of your garage while the door was closed?

    • @twHomeShow
      @twHomeShow  5 лет назад

      YES! I did. I couldn't yell loud enough for it to hear my command. I think because along with the garage doors as well as it being tucked up against the refrigerator :) BUT, remember....you could have your alexa right inside your house and speak to it as you're exiting out to your garage...that's an option. It works pretty good with the ALEXA Geo-fencing. I have made an arrive routine that senses me (my smartphone) coming home from work and the garage door automatically opens when I pull into my driveway. That's pretty COOL!

    • @MrJoe8K
      @MrJoe8K 5 лет назад +1

      That’s perfect, I was thinking more of a security risk if someone could just say a command and gain access. So it is good that it didn’t hear you. I mean someone would have to think of telling alexa to open the door too lol

    Ok so some clarifications on this install that I didn't hear this guy mention. While this install worked-out perfectly great, a few items to address: First, I couldn't figure out why this fella installed an Echo Dot in the garage. I thought he was doing this to repeat the WiFi signal perhaps, but quickly shot that idea down due to the fact that the $14 board that does all the magic is itself a WiFi device capable of hopping on your network just fine. So I have concluded it's in his garage for only 1 reason: He wants to voice activate his garage opener from his garage. Why he doesn't just use the Alexa App to do this is beyond me, but this can be the only reason he set things up this way.
    Secondly, Not mentioned in the video -it absolutely matters which wire goes to which lead connecting the smart switch to the opener. On his particular opener (which model is exactly the same as mine) he mentions which 2 connections on the switch to connect the red lead (from the opener) goes to the connection in the corner. The white lead goes to the connection in the middle. My garage door opener errored-out when I reversed the connection.
    Lastly I wasn't really fond of the idea of just mounting my smart switch to the outside of the opener ( dust, humidity) a piece of electronics deserves at least a little protection. So I visited my local Home Depot and roamed around looking for a plastic shell of some kind, really anything. I settled on a gray pvc 1-gang switch box( for an power outlet or switch) and an additional cover blank to screw onto the top for total containment. It had the necessary break-away portions to run the wires through areas and also had areas templated so it could be screwed to the wall. I had planned to do just that, however the space on top of my opener was just large enough to wedge it between the opener and the ceiling so I didn't need to.
    I'm happy to say the configuration was the simplest portion even after I switched routers and had to erase my last eWelink device add, in order to get it on the connection for the new router. I set the app to pairing mode and it found the device right away. I renamed the device to Garage Door and I was voice controlling things right afterwards.

    Quick question, can I simply connect the same 2 wires I use for the for the wall button as it is an old system and hardwired. By connecting the module that way I am theorizing it should work. This should also work for anything that is a connect to turn on such as the fireplace, or anything else. also does the other button that is not used for the LED activation, activate the function of the module. IN that way I should be able to retrofit and put in a box to push the button and use the entire module as a wall button with a 9-volt battery instead of the Micro.

    • @twHomeShow
      @twHomeShow  5 лет назад

      Hi Larry, It almost seems that you could tap into the same two wires at the switch, but I'm not sure if that would cause the board in the switch to either short out or something to go haywire...They are the same two wires but you would be crossing the old garage door buttons/board if you wired directly to your button's circuit panel (maybe you could splice into the wires before the switch). If you just eliminated the switch it would surely work. As far as the buttons on the eWeLink board...they don't activate the function as far as I remember, they just allow you to select what service you want it to perform ( the middle button lit, allows for momentary inching or jogging mode. The outer button lit, allows for constant mode).

      Hello, Yes, you must power the eWeLink board with 5V. It doesn't supply any power to your garage door components. Todd

      I've had some power loss since installing and have never had to re-program. Once- I had to press the button to change the LED light from the continuos mode to inching-jogging mode.

      This is odd. I have Liftmaster with MyQ. No problems. Worked instantly with no issues. I would read the comments and reviews left for this product on Amazon. Lot's of people have down this. Maybe someone has a similar situation with a solution. Todd

      Yeah, I've had the myQ working for years, now. But it's so limited with what you can do now-days with SmartHome integration. I am really happy with this discovery!

    • @billabney243
      @billabney243 6 лет назад

      Mine does the same. I'm guessing the wall switch uses a resistor to adjust something. I'm sure the manufacturer did this so you'd have to buy their switch and not just re-purpose an old doorbell switch (or any momentary switch) like old days. I'll put a meter on the leads later see what mine needs. ruclips.net/video/bM5cK01I6OI/видео.html

      Just wanted to follow up on my question and your helpful response : I received the module today and it was very easy to set up thanks to the instructions you provided. I also created 3 routines for my Alexa: "Open garage door", Close the garage door" and "Stop the garage door". They technically perform the same action but make controlling the device a bit more intuitive to me and the family. I'm now looking for a module that can provide feedback if the door is open to add better functionality.

    Hello, I'm a techy guy as well but i don't think i can talk to a voice activated app all day. After a while it starts looking retarded. Also what happens when you have company and they say Echo, turn on lights or activate garage door when you are oppose to it.Now you've just given someone else power you no longer control. Some thing are just better to live without.

    • @UGotTheFunk
      @UGotTheFunk 5 лет назад

      It doesn't look like anything other than what you think it looks like. In all reality, who really cares. I'll talk to a machine if it means I never have to worry about something being on or off, opened or closed, when they should or shouldn't be :). Also, if your opposed to having company use the automated equipment, than, just simply either mute the Alexas or power them down and resort going back to normal usage for the time being. Although, maybe in some point in time they'll put in a security measure for that scenario by needing to use an access code in order to activate home automation which can be enabled when you have company.

      Almost all smart devices can be controlled a number of different ways:
      1. Physical button: You can still turn lights on/off and open garage doors by pressing a physical button.
      2. Native app: As with this device, most come with a native app that allow you to control everything with a press of a virtual button on your phone/tablet. This means that you can sit with your family at the dinner table and adjust the lights and or music without getting up or yelling at your voice assistant.
      3. Voice control: Alexa/Google Home integration. Anyone with kids knows that having your hands full is a reality that's unavoidable. Starting music, setting timers, turning lights on/off, or opening the garage door with your voice is a great luxury that's hard to explain. You have to experience it for a few days to truly appreciate the convenience. (Having kids is not a prerequisite.)
      You are giving up nothing and gaining two other convenient ways to get a task done. One day you will have your hands full and you will just ask the assistant for help and you will never look back. Sure you will fight Alexa and Google Home, but your phone has one, so just embrace it! You can still hold on to your "powers".

    So this guy traded his complete 24/7 privacy within his own home simply because he was to lazy too open his garage door by hand. I find it sad how little people value there own privacy. I don't need alexa listening to everything I say.
