  • Ever thought about building up the ultimate family overlanding road trip rig, loading up all your recreation gear and heading out on the road with your kids for a whole year? In this episode we talk with Carrie and Nate from Our Journey Overland about how they’ll be traveling North America for a whole year in their Toyota Tundra, 4 Wheel Camper and custom utility bed trailer. There are a million different vehcles and setups you could use, but our friends Carrie and Nate settled on a pretty amazing one based on a used Toyota Tundra, a used Four Wheel Camper and a custom utility bed trailer and a lot of deals, finds and hard work.
    Before they set out on their year-long overlanding adventure, we caught up with them at Snag Lake, CA to get a tour of their setup and how it works for them.

    Rad setup, you'll have a great trip. I'll disagree with your assessment of 'budget' and 'as cheap as you can build' though. I did a seven month round trip from Montana to Panama for under $6k total. That included all of our travel expenses, food, gas, beer, and the purchase price of the used 4runner! Granted, we slept in ground tents, cooked outside on the tailgate, and didn't have a cool looking winch bumper, but that was not an issue in Central America.

    • @ourjourneyoverland1271
      @ourjourneyoverland1271 4 года назад +2

      That's awesome! You must have grabbed that 4runner for a song. I've completed several builds and adventures for much less, but this was my budget build when I actually had a budget. And I was packing a family of 4 and camping in sub freezing temperatures. Can a stock rig make it to the ends of the Earth? Of course. Would that make an interesting walk around? No. This was a budget build for a family of four who wanted to bring all their toys and be comfortable and secure. Can it be done for less? Sure. But not this nice

    This is a friendly piece of advice, not an insult. If you go through BC, Canada, you will get pulled over. Suspension upgrades do not increase payload, nothing increases payload. The camper, gear, fuel, passenger weight, your mods and the trailer, have you way overweight. In BC, they can make you pull your trailer and camper off of the road, if you're overweight, and leave it until you have a capable truck. Have a great safe trip!!!

    Hey! I just found this video and I know it's a bit old.. but how is this set up working for your family? I'm looking at a four wheel camper for our family of four. My two kids are 7 and 9. I feel like the roll over couch is the best option for two kids, but I'd love to hear your thoughts on the sleeping arrangements. Thanks!

    Really enjoyed the walkthrough. Great rig setup! I wonder if you are using the 6112 with the spring comes with it, or you change to a higher spring rate one. Curious how it works out with the added weight of the bumper and winch. I have a 19 tundra and considering the 6112 as well.

    • @camsbeoch
      @camsbeoch 3 года назад +1

      We are running the springs it came with. With the weight that far back with the camper and trailer it actually lightened up the front end a few hundred pounds. It rides perfect with and without the trailer.

    Stoked I saw this video. How many miles do U have on the truck. How is it handling with the weight and towing? I have 230,000 on mine and want to put a pop up in the bed and tow my Polaris rzr 4 seater behind.was towing a enclosed trailer with no worries before. I’m a tundra snob and won’t buy anything else regardless

    • @ourjourneyoverland1271
      @ourjourneyoverland1271 4 года назад +1

      We have about 120,000 miles on the truck. It has not handled the weight very well. All the suspension mods helped. Really the main shortcoming is the brakes. But in the tundras defense it is overloaded

  • @DeePunter
    @DeePunter 3 года назад +1

    Ok so great build first of all but Tundra only have have 7100 gvwr, it weighs 5500, so u have about 1600 to work with, now camper is 1300 dry, family of 4 is about 450, modifications on truck is at least another 500, food water battery solar misc things in camper 300, then fuel 46gal is 280. That come too 2830, so without the tongue weight of the trailer u r 1200 pounds over weight and pulling a good size trailer. Can the Tundra really handle it?

      They made it back. So yeah.

    • @camsbeoch
      @camsbeoch 3 года назад +1

      Your numbers are spot on! The Tundra did great! Not one single issue for the whole year. On really steep inclines the trans would get a little hot if I forgot to hit the tow/haul button, other than that it was great.

      Yes. Years and years on several continents. The A+track is pretty good on these things. I've had at least one locker on most of my rigs and have used them several times. I was just hoping to stay out of trouble on this trip. It didn't work out. I've already needed it.
