People are missing the point. The reason the rule exists is to increase odds of finishing the game. Baseball is very imbalance at the extremes. Because there is no clock, other team can just take a fan out of stands to pitch when a score differential gets high. They have no incentive to waste arm of a pro pitcher at this point.
Historic comebacks in the MLB happen all the time. The Mariners trailed Toronto 8-1 after 5 innings in the playoffs but came back to win. And look at game 6, Mets-Boston in 1986. Play until the final out, never let up. Don't apologize because the other team is inept.

I play baseball and basketball, and it’s one thing to shoot a 3 pointer when you’re up 20 with 20 seconds left in the game, when there’s no shot of a comeback. But in baseball, you could theoretically be down 20-0 going into the bottom of the 9th and end up that. Which is why this is one of the stupidest unwritten rules in all of sports

It definitely exists even at the lower levels, like high school and middle school, but it doesn’t make any sense. I remember always getting that sign in similar situations and I never got it. I have seen 10+ run innings in middle and high school happen, so I do not believe at any point in time it is impossible for there to be a comeback. That rule is like he said a rule because pitchers are wimps and have fragile egos. If a pitcher gives you a pitch you think you can crush, I do not care if it is 20-0 and the top of the 9th. Fuck even the playoffs that year were boring as we mercy ruled all 3 teams we played. First game I was the lead off hitter hit a base hit we batted around the entire lineup I came up to bat again they switched pitchers and I hit a single against him. Becoming the only player in my region to lead off against two different pitchers in the same inning and get a hit against them both. We were up 14 to 0 after the first inning. Which is the exact opposite of my Little League team. Which went 5-32 in the two years I was on the team and the only 5 games we won were games where I pitched I complete game. Yet the final scores were always like 15 to 10. Even though I gave up 10 runs only like 2 of them were earned as my team would make like 10+ errors a game. Which sucked for me because I was a contact pitcher who kept everything low to get ground balls yet my team couldn't field for shit had a fucking lefty at SS and 3rd base.

People are missing the point. The reason the rule exists is to increase odds of finishing the game. Baseball is very imbalance at the extremes. Because there is no clock, other team can just take a fan out of stands to pitch when a score differential gets high. They have no incentive to waste arm of a pro pitcher at this point.

I think if someone strikes a pitcher with clear intent then that batter should get an automatic home run rather than a walk to first. I think teams would start cracking down on baby pitchers if it started costing them a ton of runs because that pitcher just let two or three people get home because of their ego.

All the unwritten rules are stupid. Those "rules" are how pitchers justify beaning batters whenever they feel like it, and why teams feel the need to all rush out on the field and stand around for 10 minutes pretending to fight at the drop of a hat. Just play baseball!
It definitely exists even at the lower levels, like high school and middle school, but it doesn’t make any sense. I remember always getting that sign in similar situations and I never got it. I have seen 10+ run innings in middle and high school happen, so I do not believe at any point in time it is impossible for there to be a comeback. That rule is like he said a rule because pitchers are wimps and have fragile egos. If a pitcher gives you a pitch you think you can crush, I do not care if it is 20-0 and the top of the 9th. If you want to swing you shouldnt be scolded for doing so. It is sad to see that the game is still being affected by dumb rules like this.

Fuck even the playoffs that year were boring as we mercy ruled all 3 teams we played. First game I was the lead off hitter hit a base hit we batted around the entire lineup I came up to bat again they switched pitchers and I hit a single against him. Becoming the only player in my region to lead off against two different pitchers in the same inning and get a hit against them both. We were up 14 to 0 after the first inning. Which is the exact opposite of my Little League team. Which went 5-32 in the two years I was on the team and the only 5 games we won were games where I pitched I complete game. Yet the final scores were always like 15 to 10. Even though I gave up 10 runs only like 2 of them were earned as my team would make like 10+ errors a game. Which sucked for me because I was a contact pitcher who kept everything low to get ground balls yet my team couldn't field for shit had a fucking lefty at SS and 3rd base.
