Squatty Run for Acceleration Development

  • Too often we are taught to "run tall" and hit "triple extension" on all our sprint drills and mechanics.
The problem is that elite accelerators in athletics do neither of these things.
This is where a properly performed squatty run can play a helpful role. The squatty run (inspired by my mentor Adarian Barr) offers the benefits of a training environment where athletes can self-organize in a manner that focuses on:
    Compressive Forces
Low hip position that simulates acceleration in sport or the first 10-20m of a linear sprint
An opportunity to improve timing and posture in an acceleration-specific position
An opportunity to focus on impulse and not over-extending.
If you are interested in learning more, check out my new book "Speed Strength" which shows how this exercise fits into the grand scheme of speed development.

why not just accelerate normally from a low start position if you're trying to train those positions?

If you're already accelerating like an elite sprinter, than sure. If not, work on the extreme end of the spectrum, to get some stimuli closer to the positions needed to accelerate like an elite sprinter.

You also mentioned in an article about “bucket runs” to help acceleration where the runner puts an actual bucket or hoop behind them. I couldn’t find anything on the web. Are there any videos on how to do that?

Hey Joel, i read your book: "Vertical Foundations" and currently trying your 3-day explosive strenght and power programfor 2 foot. The Problem is, i´ve got patella tendonitis and i would add the Knee Extension at the machine with the 3-0-3 Tempo at the end of each workout for my knee health. Will the slow tempo at the end disturb the development of my vertical leap? Big Fan of your work, keep up the exellent work!

Gulasch, thanks for buying my book; and to answer your questions, something as neurologically taxing as a knee extension (not taxing) there isn't too much worry with the slow tempo here, no problems!

@@JoelSmith7 Thx a lot for the answer. Rare to get an answer from someone, you read a book and look up to!
