absolutely love this song. when i heard this for the first time, nothing could have been more perfect. i was in the prime location at the best time.. listening to the best song at that specific moment.
@BrightEyesAtheist that reminds me of the song Waste of Paint by Bright Eyes. There's a verse at the end where he talks about wanting to raise his voice in the choir, but he feels like he can't.
We heard the song on the Roots album and just had to find out more about Monsters of Folk...Damn was We sleeping I feel bad about just finding out about them. The Old Shall become the new..It Folk for the NEW AGE...Wow cats just made 2 new Fans. Just a thought from The Otherz
Putting on my power, righteous as a rose Dynamite the mountain, now I'm walking up the road The love we made at gunpoint wasn't love at all The dancing in the valley, the moons is the mirrored ball Blew open my mind, now it's an empty room Swinging in the hammock, dogs are walking across the roof I watch you braid your hair, you're from another time When the earth wasn't so angry And god was on our side Searching west and east And all points in-between Underneath the lines of thought You're there and then you're not The mayans stole tomorrow, hid it underground We come with heavy magnets but it still hasn't been found I'm sweating out my secrets in the temazcal They're screaming in the calle that there are stars about to fall Looking through the trees Cities and the seas Things we've seen Ovnis on the lawn They're there and then they're gone There and then they're gone Searching west and east All points in between And underneath the hand of god You're there and then you're not
This is the only real version of this song. I love it, something about the syrupy melted butter goodness of this version of the song... not sure why it reminds me of pancakes, but fuck it, I love pancakes, and I love this song :)
Daniel - there are rumours that a new LP is in the works also a Monster of Folk movie (Conor wrote a script) :) I just hope it comes soon and that they put out the album even if they don't get the movie done...
i like this more than the one on the album. that not cause the singer, i think both have their own charme u shoukldnt compare. but i think on this version the e-guitars are a lot better.. just fits very good
The random song TikTok flags for copyright infringement. I love it. If Dylan won the Nobel Prize for incorporating poetry in popular music, Conor should get it for incorporating philosophy. That’s why they were not the same. One didn’t have to rhyme to get his point across. God bless timeless folk music.

@oeddawg He sings it in the album. Personally I like both versions. The version of Sandman, Brakeman and me with Jim James covering it, in my opinion, is better than the one in the album, where M. Ward is the main vocalist.
+troutkiller I'm not implying that you're trolling, but have you seen even a fraction of his body of work? Not to mention any of his solo acoustic stuff, can't really say someone isn't talented when there is no smoke and mirrors. Just saying
Trout - his lyrics lack depth - WTF... easily the best modern lyricist out there, and it's not even close... his lyrics are incredible - deep, honest, personal, symbolic, poetic, etc... maybe his lyrics just fly over your head ;) and if you think Conor isn't talented, man you haven't given him a fair shot or your taste is up your ass... dude plays guitar, piano, harmonica, etc... on top of writing some of the best lyrics of our generation... yeah there is a beautiful sadness to much of his work and perhaps you don't like that style, but to say he's not talented just because his style doesn't suit your taste is ridiculous...
troutkiller Come on dude... we had this conversation already, a long time ago...remember?! For someone who doesn't think that Conor has any talent, you certainly comment a lot on his songs. What's up with that, eh?
i find it very interesting that m. ward sings lead in this video instead of conor like on the album. amazing song. i really enjoy the album. great work guys.
The Temazcal (the Nahuatl temazcalli 'home steam' by temaz 'steam' and calli 'home') is a steam bath, own in the cultures of Mexico and Central America. The term refers both to the place where it is practiced, as the event in which they participate. The equivalent name in Mayan zumpul-che, in Mixteco Nihi.
@5150anonymous Yeah, The Pogues are not exactly what Americans or Canadians would call folk music... it is true that their music is stylistic traditional (with more aggressive overtones) and rooted in Old World folk songs but in North America folk music is a radically different genre than Old World folk music, i.e. traditional ballads. In North America, folk music of America is something that is encapsulated in the works of people like Woody Guthrie, early Dylan, or more recently these guys
@BrightEyesAtheist Not having a dig at you man just think what you said is a little overused and perhaps ought not to be given so many votes as you have. It really is an dig at all those that thought it profound or insightful and thinking it worth a thumbs up! huh...ive got no profound thought by the way, just so you know.
I think the guitar sounds better in this version for some reason, and M. Wards' singing in this vid and Conors singing on the CD are definately different, so I don't know if I can say one or the other is better. I do like this version though, and it's cool to see them all lay the tracks at the same time together.
conor wrote it...basically every lyric each sings on the album, they wrote, i believe...conor's songs are all pretty obvious on there - this, man named truth, map of the world, ahead of the curve..something like Dear God though, Jim came up with the music and stuff, but each wrote their actual verse in the song
@ubertomadachi According to the International Phonetic Alphabeth (IPA) (in Spanish AFI) Temazcal is pronounced [ te maθ 'kal ] I`m sorry, I don`t know another way to explain it. I`m from Spain, and it`s quite simple for me to pronounce it, but difficult to explain....
@eheffelf I understand, completely. I think Christianity need to be reborn... with an emphasis on the love, and the tolerance, that you can take from the bible, without translation. However, I'm not sure if you've found the best forum. You may be preaching to the choir.
the music isn't terrible, it isn't anythin special.I personally don't think its ground breaking.. opinions are like assholes, everybodies got one. I don't really know, they may have meant everything from the bottom of their hearts, whatever. Just for me it means nothing.
@handicappeddoilookok gotta disagree with you there they're still playing music, still writing good songs, trying out new things... sure their sound is different, it would get boring if they stayed exactly the same i mean this respectfully... but what do you think they were "really about"?
This is an amazing version of this song, though I personally love both. The song in itself is amazing. If I can ever write something this good I will be pleased with my life.
I really don't mean to be a dick and I really know my opinion means absolutely nothing, its just very unfortunate that all of these peoples egos have gotten so big they have forgotten what they were really about
Conor should have sang this. Not that M.Ward didn't do a good job. Its just that its quite apparent that Conor wrote this song so he should be the one singing it. Conor's songs are probably the best on the album in my opinion.
All who wander are not lost...the message of this gorgeous harmony of voices and music strikes a chord with anyone who has travelled and found something in a moment they will never recapture again. The smile at the end says it all. Perfection 😍
@MrHAVOCtheMAN a temazcal is a ceremonial sauna that was used by the Mayans and the other Indigenous peoples of Mesoamerica. Its uses included things like healing and purifying yourself after battle.
That's a mandolin, built in the style of a danelectro guitar. Probably a custom job, I googled it and didn't find any immediate results with a brand name.
@eltonsawyer I think they should add Robin Pecknold from Fleet foxes and/or Jeff Tweedy from Wilco...really shake things up but sufjan would be awesome too
I picture the Nevada Desert with Joshua trees and a purple sky with some stars and a door to another cosmic space when I listen to this song in bed. :)
There has to be so much extra MOF footage. At the end, if this video kept playing and we saw everything afterward. Imagine that documentary
Mike Mogis is just the silent mastermind that makes takes this song some place beyond wherever they had it
Mogis has been alongside Conor for so long. He’s an important human being.
Mogis is a fucking genius
Sycamore Shade is a supercool name!
M ward makes this song. Bottom line
Mike on the strings is the difference maker
Still coming here when i need it
Yep
wish they still made music together...we need it here in 2020
Ive read an article few years ago that they will continue, but apparently nothing came out of it.
This is seriously one of the most badass sounding songs. The lyrics are like a chiller version of Cortez the Killer. The harmonies are killer.
nice connection
Like The Traveling Wilburys, short lived, but fun while it lasted.
and like the traveling wilburys so damn good
I love the harmonizing of Conor and Jim's voice. And I love this version. It's amazing how they could rotate like that and each version is great!
absolutely love this song.
when i heard this for the first time,
nothing could have been more perfect.
i was in the prime location at the best time..
listening to the best song at that specific moment.
The world needs this band, they are nowhere its only old videos
I love jim james smile in the end, so cute! =)
I feel like a kid again when I listen to this song, like things are ok
@BrightEyesAtheist that reminds me of the song Waste of Paint by Bright Eyes.
There's a verse at the end where he talks about wanting to raise his voice in the choir, but he feels like he can't.
We heard the song on the Roots album and just had to find out more about Monsters of Folk...Damn was We sleeping I feel bad about just finding out about them. The Old Shall become the new..It Folk for the NEW AGE...Wow cats just made 2 new Fans. Just a thought from The Otherz
Sounds GREAT!!!
This song helped me out through some really depressing moments...
I'm thankful for these guys, honestly.
Damn! one of the best folk songs ever!
Putting on my power, righteous as a rose
Dynamite the mountain, now I'm walking up the road
The love we made at gunpoint wasn't love at all
The dancing in the valley, the moons is the mirrored ball
Blew open my mind, now it's an empty room
Swinging in the hammock, dogs are walking across the roof
I watch you braid your hair, you're from another time
When the earth wasn't so angry
And god was on our side
Searching west and east
And all points in-between
Underneath the lines of thought
You're there and then you're not
The mayans stole tomorrow, hid it underground
We come with heavy magnets but it still hasn't been found
I'm sweating out my secrets in the temazcal
They're screaming in the calle that there are stars about to fall
Looking through the trees
Cities and the seas
Things we've seen
Ovnis on the lawn
They're there and then they're gone
There and then they're gone
Searching west and east
All points in between
And underneath the hand of god
You're there and then you're not
Awesome. But I believe it’s “comb with heavy magnets”, not “come with”. I figured they had metal detectors in mind when they wrote it :)
I love hearing M Ward singing this.. What a voice!
sends chills down my spine every time I hear this version.
This is the only real version of this song. I love it, something about the syrupy melted butter goodness of this version of the song... not sure why it reminds me of pancakes, but fuck it, I love pancakes, and I love this song :)
lmao wake n bake with pancakes...this song in the background, sounds good to me xp
FateBinder are you a plastic surgeon or a mammogram administrator?
Thats exactly what i feel too. Ive been trying to figure out how its produced, but cant find anything that resembles that guitar flow.
You like M. Ward singing it more than Connor. That’s why.
@@Brinnaaan yeah m wards voice is deep and rich like honey, or i guess syrup haha
@vanceoliver An electric mandolin I think, sounds like he's running it through some reverb with a shimmer setting.
so fucking good, just pray they make another album someday
Daniel - there are rumours that a new LP is in the works also a Monster of Folk movie (Conor wrote a script) :)
I just hope it comes soon and that they put out the album even if they don't get the movie done...
M Ward, that man has a voice.
WOAH I knew the voice was similar oh and the background noises
This is what the pulse of my lungs sounds like.
i like this more than the one on the album.
that not cause the singer, i think both have their own charme u shoukldnt compare.
but i think on this version the e-guitars are a lot better.. just fits very good
I like his voice, it fits the song...
yes, please.
@knrose10
This is connor's song... he sings it on the album, and usually live... just him and ward switched parts this
Really good song. =) Love it.
The Highwaymen would be proud .
2019 anyone? :)
HEY!
2020
this song in the voice of m. Ward is just overwhelming. I prefer this version to conor's
This is great, but I wonder why Conor's not singing this one, like on the album
this is magic
I have MOF as a Pandora Station, and lately....... they have made my crazy trip we call life much more pleasurable.
This sucks
Nice video, but is that olde time video effect adding anything at all?
To be honest, I think they're both great voices.
m ward and jim james were made to sing together
+Corey Vaughn shh
+Corey Vaughn and Conor is the perfect contrast to their voices harmonizing
Why isn’t this a thing....? There it is, beauty right in front of you, in the whispers of wind and nobody to hear it. Great record.
True beauty
Putting on my power, righteous as a rose
Dynamite the mountain, now I'm walking up the road
The love we made at gunpoint wasn't love at all
The dancing in the valley, the moons is the mirrored ball
Blew open my mind, now it's an empty room

I wish so much they would've done another album. Every song they did was so good. True talents all of them. Monsters.
"sweatin out my secrets in the temazcaaaaaaal"
MOF at is prime
i watch you braid your hair, you're from another time
when the earth wasn't so angry, and god was on our side
..you're there and then you're not
This is just unreal.
@oeddawg He sings it in the album. Personally I like both versions. The version of Sandman, Brakeman and me with Jim James covering it, in my opinion, is better than the one in the album, where M. Ward is the main vocalist.
Why can't I like this song every time I return to this page and listen to it?
Which is pretty much a lot.
either way, yim yones is a master of harmony. all these fellers kick ass on this one no matter whose singing. best song on the album i say
dunno, i think conor's version is way better.
to me, conor's way of delivering his lyrics is near unbeatable. oh well..
What is Mike Mogis playing? It kind of looks like a mandolin but has 12 srings.
I hate to say it but this version takes the original, hands down. Love Conor but M Ward nails it
+troutkiller I honestly cant believe that you think Conor Oberst isn't very talented.
+troutkiller I'm not implying that you're trolling, but have you seen even a fraction of his body of work? Not to mention any of his solo acoustic stuff, can't really say someone isn't talented when there is no smoke and mirrors. Just saying

Come on dude... we had this conversation already, a long time ago...remember?!
For someone who doesn't think that Conor has any talent, you certainly comment a lot on his songs. What's up with that, eh?
This video is a peak experience. The vibe is so good. The song so perfectly itself, so beautiful.
i find it very interesting that m. ward sings lead in this video instead of conor like on the album. amazing song. i really enjoy the album. great work guys.
This brings me back, reminds me of slower smashing pumpkins. I really love this song, every note and word, absolutly brilliant.
the greatest collaboration since peanut butter and chocolate first hooked up. my mind = blown

Did anyone else love these guys separately before they formed M.O.F and then when they did freak out so much you died?
Speaking from the afterlife right now.
@BrightEyesAtheist

its a cosmic joke that these guys only made one album as monsters of folk. but i'm not laughing. -__-
This is an amazing version of this song, though I personally love both. The song in itself is amazing. If I can ever write something this good I will be pleased with my life.

this version is so much better, they shouldve just stuck with it for the album.
i just listened to the album version...and didnt like it at all haha.
@BrightEyesAtheist
Sorry brighteyes but that is such a cliche which i must shake my head at. It is neither profound nor insightful, simply overused.
that's one of my fave songs ever..
but sadly i don't like any other song of them that i heard...
rad
@braholicpunk I know, but he isn't singing in the album version right? I think it's Conor who sings in the album...I could be wrong though...
conor sings this on the album right? does anyone know who wrote it? that would be so awesome if he wrote it and then let mward sing in for this.
it does have 6 courses as opposed ot the usual four...sounds incredible. the vocal recording quality is so good
Great song. Nicely done. Best done by Molly Tuttle and her family band, though, if you ask me. Before you blast me, listen to it.
MOF are like CSNY with Jim James being the Y. Respectable musicians that sound great together but not near as good with out the Y.
@achurley
No he plays very obscure makes, I'd love to know they sound just as nice as a martin and I bet they are 10 times cheaper.
Connor is the best. Idk about monsters of folk I'm going back to bright eyes
the entirety of their album
oh i do, that's why this is terrible. stop listening to what pitchfork tells you is "creative." its all regurgitated nonsense.
Anyone else suddeenly start thinking "Do you like where you're living? Do you like what you do?" at the end of this video??
This is a really farout song!!! MOF ftw!!! This is kinda stupid but can some one some tell me how to pronounce temazcal
I like the other version...I'm glad I read these comments b/c I thought I was crazy in thinking the song was different.
i agree 100% i did know of bright eyes and jim james before this band tho i love them all and all the songs great stuff.
all this band needs is john mccauley and it really would have all the monsters of folk
@johnmorisi8 I like both but something about M Ward's voice in this song is so haunting, I have to say I prefer it!
just do the youtube to mp3 thats what i do when they don't have versions like this on itunes :D 480p sounds good
@greenfishbowlacidkid - that's what happens when you listen to Trevor Dandy and sample one of his drum tracks :)
can anyone tell me what instrument mogis is playing? is that a 10 string mandolin?
M. Ward is the only person who can wear sunglasses inside and not look like a total douche. I love these guys.
@mwilsonian He does some awesome stuff with that...is it a twelve string guitar, or a mandolin or something?
What's the thing with all the knobs next to M. Ward? Is that like some sort of effects processor or something?
Is it just my impression or this song is about 2012 and the mayans' prophecies? LOL
Wonderful song anyway =)
