  • REDUCED Engine Temp! Front Mount Intercooler vs Top Mount Intercooler | Nissan GU Patrol
    In this video, I dive into the world of intercoolers and their impact on engine temperature. I compare the performance of a front mount intercooler to a top mount intercooler on a Nissan GU Patrol.
    Intercoolers are essential components in turbocharged engines, as they help cool down the compressed air from the turbocharger before it enters the engine. I've conducted a series of tests to measure the temperature reduction achieved by each type of intercooler.
    Through the tests, I demonstrate the benefits of a front mount intercooler in reducing engine temperature and improving overall engine performance.
    Whether you're a Nissan GU Patrol owner looking to upgrade your intercooler or simply interested in learning more about engine cooling systems, this video provides valuable insights into the world of intercoolers and their impact on engine performance.

    Hi Jase, nice Rig brother. I have the same car and have done mods basically the same as yours just running a smaller tire (33's). I used to drive a fast sedan and saw your videos and other patrol users so I sold my car and bought one, never looked back and loving every second of it. Keep posting your journey bro!

      Thanks mate! That’s great to hear
      Fast cars are awesome but if I had a choice between that and a 4x4, the 4x4 would always be my choice, so much more versatility and heaps more fun stuff you’re able to do

    Awesome video, mate! Super valuable comparison. Didn't realise the front mount made such a significant impact!

    While you’re mainly talking EGTs here, a tip I’ve discovered that could reduce engine coolant temps with the patrol is through blocking off the heater lines. The heater core is actually a constant flow-through design; there’s no valve like cruisers have. Heater control just regulates air flow across the heater. Therefore coolant is always circulating thru the core. Based on hose size, I estimate at least 20% of the water pumps flow capacity is used in recirculating the coolant for the heater. I installed a vacuum actuated tap in my heater line which blocks it when i don’t need heater which then diverts 100% of my water pump flow capacity thru the radiator for cooling. This dropped my max temp going up the same highway from 98 deg C to 84 deg C.
    I didn’t actually do this mod to lower coolant temps. I accidentally discovered this as a result of an engine conversion and the way i plumbed the heater lines resulted in coolant bypassing the thermostat.

      That’s awesome mate!! What vacuum actuated tap did you use - do you happen to have a link to it?

      Could just use a manual tap and turn off in summer?

    Hey mate, really good video. Ive been struggling with my egts as well. Similar sorta temps with the top mount, i recently got a tune (RMR in Malaga), still with the top mount and seeing similar, maybe even a little lower egts than what you are getting with the front mount. So assuming if you were to get a tune ontop of that, your egts would sit far lower. Also recommend an EDS guage from Kings. Reads digital coolant temp and its abour $70. Super worth it. Found with lower egts meant lower coolant temp generally.

      Hey mate, that’s really interesting! Yeah I’ve heard that tuning the ZD30 with higher boost/to be leaner reduces EGT’s, I’ll definitely need to look into it! And thanks for the EDS gauge recommendation, will 100% be getting onto that 🤙

    Thanks for posting. Another excellent video, as always. Full of great information. Since you've started this build, you've given me lots of ideas about what to do with my Patrol.
    Questions: In your walkaround video, you showed yout Manta exhaust.
    Did you install the exhaust yourself?
    Or, do you think it's possible for someone at home to install an exhaust system?
    (I've seen on other posts that getting the original exhaust off is a pain, especially the 3 bolts at the back of the turbo.)
    One option I have is to get a mail order exhaust, and try to install it myself. But I don'w want to bust anyting, so we'll see.

    • @jasereynolds_
      @jasereynolds_  5 месяцев назад

      No problem mate! The manta exhaust is pretty much one of the only mods that I didn’t do myself! But yeah from what I’ve heard, the heat shield and the dump pipe to turbo bolts are the most difficult to get around. It’s definitely possible to do yourself, would want to do enough research on it first I reckon!

    Awesome vid mate! Have just found your channel after researching GU patrols. Would love some advice on what to look out for on the ZD30? I’m looking around 2012 under 150km’s.

      Hey mate! I reckon a good service history is ideal. If these are serviced regularly then they can be very reliable. It’s probably going to have oil leaks, but I would mostly be looking for significant leaks around the turbo or any coolant leaks. Would also check that it’s not been overheating (drive it around and see if the temp gauge moves much from the middle) 🤙

      Cheers legend! Not the absolute greatest given all of the weight, probably around 14/15ltr per 100, but that would definitely drop without the accessories and smaller tyres 🤙

    you probably have seen it by now but the 4wd 24/7 guys just did a vid on the zd30 and they showed that they put a tb48 (i think ) thermo in the zd30 because it opens a little earlier.

    • @andrewly6954
      @andrewly6954 3 месяца назад

      Hmm. Haven’t watched the video but it would have been my hypothesis that a higher rated thermostat would have been better for overall cooling. As there is less draw required on the radiator to maintain the higher equilibrium temp. Accordingly, you would have a greater thermal capacity in your cooler running radiator. That is, the radiator is less heat soaked.

    Be interesting to see what a remap does to your temps. Evolution tuning seems to get 100hp stock to 140hp with a safe tune and lowers the egts from factory by miles
    I'd definitely get a aftermarket water temp gauge my vdo says 110 before my factory one even moves

    • @jasereynolds_
      @jasereynolds_  5 месяцев назад

      Yeah I’ve got a few mates with tunes and they’ve made a big difference! Big thing I was worried about though was like prolonged boggy beach driving that can cause high temps, even with a tune your EGT’s can get fairly high, but I reckon this front mount intercooler and a tune would be the perfect mix

    • @jasereynolds_
      @jasereynolds_  5 месяцев назад

    Has it made a difference to the water temperature at all? With the intercooler in front of the radiator

    • @jasereynolds_
      @jasereynolds_  5 месяцев назад +1

      I don’t actually have a water temp gauge (outside of the factory gauge), but to put it in perspective, when I was hitting 550 degrees with the top mount, the factory water temp gauge would move between the middle and the beginning of the ‘hot’ side - it was essentially getting super hot
      I didn’t see that at all with the new front mount intercooler when I was giving it heaps, even when EGT hit 500, so I don’t think it’s blocking the radiator much in terms of air flow luckily enough!
