I am glad that someone really did notice that nuanced bit in the whole scene. That whole subtlety of that lump in his throat is past acting brilliance that it borders on emotional immersion for the actor executing it. One cannot act out such moments. Will Smith really lived the character in this movie.

Finally got my happy ending like in this movie: been at Rock bottom at a homeless shelter since the start of 2022, with no money, no hope. Went to several interviews with no luck, until the boss at Arby's saying I was hired. Hugging my fiance after the moment brought me to instant tears. What a powerful moment in my life. Update: I left Arby's in April of 2023, got a job at Culver's two days later, then at last got an apartment 2.5 months later, finally ending my homelessness after two years.)

I would say though balancing the return on the time and energy put into applying for jobs and any rejections or acceptances is equally important. because if you keep applying for the same job over and over again and the ages of the other applicants keep getting younger and you get older it ceases to be a worthy endeavor applying for any profession. All repeated and endless rejections gets people is stuck in which case a person needs to go back to why they started looking for work in the first place and see if they are really doing what is best for them individually. Status, prestige mean nothing if you are sick every day and burn out before your 50 thats not a tenable situation for anyone.

This is my favorite movie ever. I am a single dad who struggled a lot and barely made ends meet. I finished school last year in march, started a new job right after. I felt like this then when i got offered the position and this December when I received my bonus. The feeling of success is unexplainable. My son deserves the world. If I did it, anyone can! ❤

The problem is, that sometimes it just doesn't work out for you no matter how hard and how often you try.
I find the message of this movie to be highly problematic. What are we being told here? That everybody can make it, if only he tries hard enough? And what is the conclusion of that? Is it, that homeless people just have been lazy, not tried hard enough? So we can ignore them and walk by them, because it's their own fault where they are right now?
This film is the story of one lucky winner out of many losers, who will never make it. At some points in this film, the main character was just getting lucky, and that's all.
So he starts a career. But they didn't even stop there, did they? At the very end we are being informed that the main character ended up a millionaire. Excuse me, but how stupid can it get? The main goal of this movie seems to be to excuse capitalism by telling the tale of how everybody can make it. But it's a lie. Without luck, you cannot.
So, while the acting of Will Smith may be great, the movie itself is not. It's nothing but a stupid fairytale.

This clip hit me hard. I can relate to this literally.
Been an agent for almost 10 yrs now. Tried and attempted promotions for different higher positions and almost got to the point I almost gave up. Said to myself, if I still don't get this, I better stop.
So interview day came in, more than 10 applicants competing for the position in which 3 of those are people I knew personally, who is the best candidate. I almost gave up when I saw them but said to myself. Fck it. I don't wanna leave this company but let me give it a go one last time. I managed to pass interview and I was shaking. I passed nonetheless. Then came the demo presentation came. Given a month to prepare. And that month I'm a agent at day, I do research at night. It was like back in college. Nothing like caffeine to get me through.
Then demo day came in. Made me nervous as hell like the time I faced the parents of my wife who don't don't have good view on me.
Results came out. I passed. The only one. Tears won't stop while they congratulate me. Then all those years as an agent, all the applications I made, all those times I almost quit. It just came rushing through.
I know I can't compare to the the movie. But still.
    I felt it.

I was once in a position of being unemployed. I was let go from my job and was living with my parents. I had never seen this movie and someone told me to watch it. This movie proves that even the worst of the worst things in life are not forever. Just like what Charlie Chaplin said “nothing is forever in this world. Including our problems” I thought about that quote the entire time.
A quote that really hit home in this movie was when Chris was talking to his kid saying “don’t ever let someone tell you can’t do something. Not even me.” That hit home.
If you’re in a rough spot, know that it won’t last forever (even though it seems it will) just know that it will come to past like every storm that has come to you in your life. This storm you’re going through will come to past.

So this literally happened to me yesterday. For 15 years I’ve worked jobs that have been back breaking. Went through a divorce. Lost everything. When the company I interviewed asked me to come in for a third interview I thought “well, if it’s meant to be then it will happen. If not, God has something else lined up.” When they said “would you like to work for our firm,” my eyes watered just like this scene. I can’t tell you the natural high of “all that crap I went through led me to this point. This point right here.” Point is, don’t give up. Your breakthrough will come.

I hate the way that expression is constantly misinterpreted. It took me years to see the subtlety of the statement: It’s not about the literal meaning of the words “Men don’t cry;” it really means “Men don’t let their emotions rule their lives/make their decisions, for them.” It’s really meant to teach us to: Stop, and think about things before taking actions. It’s just that teaching this to young boys often means telling them “real men don’t cry”-because it’s simple-when they are overreacting to what we (as adults) know is a trivial situation.
Sadly, too few people understand the true meaning anymore, which is why it has become so harmful.
