I've seen Chris Gardner speak on stage, he said his son was an infant during this time. They made his son older in the movie for more dialog and so Will Smith's son could be in the movie.
But his son acted so well

This x 1000. I actually only just started watching this movie today because I just got out of the worst rock bottom situation I've ever hit in my entire life. I was jobless and homeless for the first time 5 months ago. I stayed in shelters when I could and parks or couch surfed other nights. Without a doubt the worst part of my situation was not getting any sleep majority of the time.
Covid really fucked me over when I lost my job and I just couldn't get a leg up. So many rejections from every company and slowly running out of money, I honestly thought I'd never have anything ever again. But one day someone said to me, you've got nothing else to lose...just keep going on that path and eventually you'll get something. 2 weeks after that encounter I found work with great pay and that helped me get on my feet to move into an apartment. I've been in my own place for 5 weeks now and its been the best I've felt in a very long time!
Just goes to show persistence becomes perseverance. If Gardner done it, anyone can. It's the strength of your will and your mind. 🙏🏽
@@SpongebobsRippedPant I felt like I was reading part of my own story for a second. Only my situation was back in 2013-2014. I also came up, worked my way through college, ended up placing 5th nationally in juco track & field nationals for the decathlon, eventually graduated a few years ago, and am now a teacher and coach. I remember seeing this movie with my dad when it came out my freshman year of high school right before a basketball game and we were both tearing up at that one scene. It’s been my favorite movie of all time since because of the perseverance and determination to succeed. I’ve always been pretty optimistic and that’s what I take away from this film. Happy for you as well!
Yep! My aunt had this movie on DVD. My family was going through a hard time financially … went through bankruptcy, lost our home- … I just couldn’t watch it… especially after my aunt told me it was quite some time before he got to the “happyness”. During that period of my life I didn’t need sad stories…. but I can watch it now ( life is so much better😊🙌)

This film motivates me and makes me cry at the same time. I also know what it’s like to be homeless. My mom lost her job back in 2008 when I was 12 and we were homeless for over a year.
Hey, I have been homeless, gone without food some from lack of money, and feel like it's just common sense to make sure everyone has shelter, food, education, and medical care . All that being said, desperation has driven me to some pretty strong 💡 innovations.
What do we tell people who argue that covering basics would destroy motivation?
(I think that the vast majority of big innovative companies were founded by people who had reasonably secure childhoods, but 🤷 the dramatic "up from nothing" stories are more exciting than,
"I had nothing, I scrimped, had to work very hard, Mummy and Daddy had to cosign a loan for me to get my first food truck." etc...ya know???!!!)

My dad went to high school with Chris Gardner (Washington High School in Milwaukee, WI). It was pretty cool for my dad to show me his high school yearbook and show me Gardner.

Fun Facts: Will Smith's son in the movie was 5 or 6 years old boy played by his biological son Jaden. The real story, Chris Gardner's son was only 14 month old boy still in diapers. That changes everything. Think about it how hard it was for the real dad now.
This movie made me cry like a baby 😭
Has me in tears of frustration and heartache everytime I watch it. Also brings on a little PTSD over horrible back luck of my own. The fear of having no control, no power, not knowing where your next meal or bed is coming from. And that scene towards the end, the night before he finds out if he's successful I can absolutely identify. All that build up and the accumulative, agonising, paralysing pressure of those last few hours before he finds out. Jeez... This film touches more than a few nerves for me. I'm in OK circumstances now. But I have more than a few extra grey hairs and wrinkles. Will Smith and Thandie Newton should have both gotten Oscars.
Even with the liberties taken, this film contains Will Smith’s finest performance. Chris Gardner went through the wringer, but he never failed to give up on a better life. I hope the family is continuing to have a happier life

He was, and even his son was great too. I wish they kept the story more realistic to what happened but it's still great.
Well....in the movie Chris’s character was portrayed in a way that it seemed like he was a very intelligent, good man almost a superhero. While her wife was a totally bad person who actually just left her son forever with a broke father. It seemed quite unrealistic but thanks to this video lot of things got clear.
I’m glad they clarified that his son was a baby. I do like the movie but all that emotional stress that kid went through was a lot for a little kid. Outside of that I do like the movie

I remember when 20/20 did Chris Gardener’s story. From what I heard. Will Smith was also watching and decided it needed to be a movie.
I believe the actual Chris Jr. was an infant during the story and doesn’t recall most what happened.
The reason he got arrested was because his neighbors called the cops on him in an argument and the cops ran his license plate through the system and saw he had unpaid parking tickets

I have looked at the comments on the bathroom scene and yes it made me feel much of the same way as others who have expressed themselves here.
I actually had the privilege of meeting Chris Gardner at a motivational speaking convention which had Lou Holtz, Steve Forbes among many others.
What he told us about the bathroom scene was even more incredible and it shook me to my very core as a man.
When asked if most of what was in the movie was true Chris replied "Yeah mostly but remember the bathroom scene? Now they cast my son at 5-6 years old when in reality he was just 10 months old (Memory is a bit foggy as this was in 2011 so it may have been 18 months either way very young)."
Now I had been homeless for 3 years when I was very young and it was hard on so many fronts.
Your self worth comes into question, Confidence and hope start to go away and it is probably the most depressing and humilating event one can go through but I was alone and not with a child especially one that young.
I do have children of my own now (very proud of all 5) so it was gut wrenching to learn that and although I had so much respect of what Chris accomplished it literally took me to another level when I heard that. I literally stepped out into the corridors to catch myself after he spoke.
He spoke on many things that were very interesting and thought provoking before mentionign his son's age. Truly blessed to get insight from this truly remarkable person.

So what if Chris Gardener got a bit physical with his wife, we all make some mistakes, doesnt make him a bad person in general, sometimes in certain situations and circumstances things get out of hand and become uncontrollable, im sure he wasnt an abusive person, he could ve let his son be taken by jackie, but he wanted to be there for him, i swear this is a rare thing in our society and fathers in general are already villainized by the mainstream media in general. My dad and my mom once fought, but my dad took care of my mom for 3 years when she was in coma and after she died, he still cries in his sleep cause she died and he couldnt save her, he even sleepwalks to this day thinking that mom might be in the enxt room and that its hot and if he opens the door my mom wouldnt feel oht, but then wakes up and realizes she died a long time ago. Think about it, we all make mistakes in our lives, doesnt make us irredeemable for life, he already went through so much in his life, and im sure his son must be proud that he was there for him and proved to be a responsible and a good parent. Im not saying that getting physical withvyour partner is a good thing, but sometimes certain things we dont intend to happen can happen, before you judge, learn to understand about the person more and be objective.

When you go through all that trouble and with all the stress, you have an unsportive persom besides you, you get to tge edge. He might have been physical with his wife, but was she verbally abusive. I mean, i am a women, but sometimes, the law overprotect the female forgetting that Mens are human beings as well.

So his story is even darker in real life. He was morally broken as well as financially broken by beating his wife at one point.
Beating his wife?
She said he got physical, that could have been nothing more than what they showed in the movie, him grabbing her shoulder, etc...could even have left a bruise...not okay, but more of an urgent need for mediated conversation, not evidence of him being "morally broken".
He was not convicted of domestic assault....he probably would have been if he had beaten her, since the judge already had him, and kept him in jail ten days for parking tickets.
(Probably as a warning ⚠️)
I have intervened and stopped domestic assaults, which is extremely dangerous, the victim and attacker are often both drunk, and the victim can go from "Heeelp!, HEEEELLLP!!!" to "Don't you lay a hand on my man!" and you're suddenly under attack from two...it's usually people acting out the effects of multigenerational trauma....I am not dismissive of domestic violence, but you're smearing the guy as a wife beater, when there's no evidence or even accusation that it was any severe violence, or much less a recurring pattern.

Trading is the hardest easiest thing I am presently doing...being a broker must not be a piece of cake , series 6, etc, I forgot that Chris' profession was a broker. This movie-Smith's portrayal and the real story, always got to me . So happy he did well, bless Mr Gardner, he is inspirational aside from the material blessing/wealth
Most brokers get through the training portion but 98% of Series 6 holders are out off the industry within two years.

I watch this movie before I saw the struggle of him and his family and for some reason I want an ending where at least I can see his son enjoying a good life. I know they are having a good life but still I wanna see it.
Only saw the movie few days back like after 14 years. This film was always in my 'to watch list' after hearing all people say it was a pretty good movie. But I never brought myself to watch it. I'm saying this I really don't know why I didn't watch it before. The film was awesome and Will Smith and Jaden Smith did an excellent work. I'm not a type of person who would easily cry but I did.
The movie was brilliant and so Chris Gardners life. Will S. Did actually nailed it on this film same w/ his real life Son Jaden. I can relate so much with this, all the circumstances 😥 as I'm a father myself. Bravo 😉👌

Saw it at the school theater by our history teacher that'd teach us outside the books and would hold class in the theater because we liked the comfortable chairs. Dude liked to travel and had visited a bunch of places around the world. Maybe he didn't have a teaching degree but we learned a lot and he was the assistant of our history teacher.
Love how this movie grorify a "dream job" more than family or your own health, and it was not about him doing sacrifases to get a job he loves doing, it's just about money, really sad

The thing is, when films change the nature of our heroes and lie about them wish such as the arrest for domestic abuse of his wife... then it paints a false picture, and we don't allow people the compassion they deserve who may also be our future heroes?

Gardner's wife's name wasn't Linda. It was said that Linda was actually a depiction of two women that Gardner had been with in the past: Sherry and Jackie. Sherry was the first wife of Gardner where shortly after the marriage, Gardner cheated on her with a neighbor down the street, Jackie. Gardner felt he was giving up his innate sexual ways when he married Sherry. He discovered that he could be intimate with Jackie, the way he liked it, so Gardner eventually left Sherry for Jackie because of the physical intimacy he and Jackie were having, but also because he found out that Jackie was pregnant with his son, Chris Jr. who was born in 1981.
Btw, he was arrested for domestic abuse against his Wife, and he was a drug dealer during his relationship with Sherry. They used to be drugged the whole time.

Also show to make an entertaining movie that elevates one's character certain things have to be left out. Like the wife not telling him where the son is and result of his domestic abuse. And that was BEFORE metoo. To put that in the movie would be suicide, you'd ray rice yourself. that's why Dre didn't get too graphic in straight outta Compton, Bobby changed details about him robie and whitney fights and good thing jayz didn't even try to defend himself against Solange. had he even pushed her or grabbed her wrists his career would be over

I really dont know why it didn't get oscar
I saw an interview once, where the real Chris Gardner actually said that he spent some days in jail for not having paid his tickets. He said that the police did go to his house after that big argument with his wife, but the reason he went to jail was because the police had run his license plate in the system and had found out about all those unpaid tickets.
Another thing Chris Gardner said is that his son was 14 months old by the time he was doing the internship at the firm, so i doubt his son might have been old enough to say that Chris was a good father in those days, but i imagine he might have said that (and more than one time) during his childhood.

Judging from what I heard about will Smith's potential involvement with Django, the story/character changes in this movie were probably his idea.. dude hates realism.
Also Chris Jr. was 18 months old and not 5 years old as depicted in the movie.

The true story was amazing enough. They didn't have to Hollywoodize it.
BART stations are not open all night, they close at midnight. So while you could sleep there, you couldn't sleep there all night.
