    • @tricktaylor1983
      @tricktaylor1983 3 года назад +13

      I think he was standing there to give the runner a chance to get back to first by forcing the catcher to watch him. The guy on third had no reason to run. During a more traditional double play at second and first he could have scored. His job is not to get thrown out there. If he wants to go above and beyond he can go just far enough to cause hesitation in the fielder and not give them time to make a double play. And only get the guy at first. However he f'ed that up and couldn't stay in a rundown long enough to allow other runners to advance or retreat safely but he didn't do that either. Terrible base running to have no outs, runners on the corners and end up giving up a double play without scoring or leaving a runner in scoring position. Bush league

      @Donald Iarussi MFA You clearly don't know how the basepath rule works. The baseline is irrelevant until a tag play is being made on a runner......or are you asserting that every runner that rounds a bag on a double instead of making a sharp 90 left-face at 1B is out too?
      7.08(a)(1): Any runner is out when running more than three feet away from his baseline to avoid being tagged, unless such action is to avoid interference with a fielder fielding a batted ball. A runner’s baseline is established when the tag attempt occurs and is a straight line from the runner to the base to which he is attempting to reach.

      It is hard to tell for certain. But In answer to your question though, the ball must be in the glove to record the out. The tag rule really doesn’t cover this. However it is the definitions section which defines what a tag out is. The ball must be in the hand or in the glove that makes the tag. You used to see this more when you had catcher collisions. Often the catcher would hold the ball in his bare hand and have that in the glove to make the tag. The thought is it would be harder to knock the ball loose from the hand rather than the glove. Collision occurs and then the catcher holds up the ball in his hand to record the out.

    Did you notice the obstruction call during that play? Right before Ramirez gets tagged out the runner that was going from first to second turns to retreat back to first. In doing so he has to run around the second baseman who is just standing in the base path. You can see the umpire call obstruction and point at the second baseman. I don't think it affected the play at all so I think in the end it didn't matter at all. But it was an interesting little piece of that play.

    Jomboy you got to do this one. Dodgers D-backs 09/10 6th inning Dodger Mookie Betts takes first after a foul ball. After a review of the count Betts walks. Weird! there was some conversation during the at bat with the Ump.

    DeJong had a cool infield hit last year that I don’t think you ever did a breakdown on and I was honestly surprised. He hit the ball off the end of the bat and it went like 10 feet foul and it had so much spin that it rolled back fair and he hustled it out to get a hit and the home plate umpire tripped over either the catcher or Paul’s bat and ate the dirt. I was thinking the whole time that this is gonna be on Jomboy, but I at least never saw it.

    Honestly coming back to this 2 years later because I love this play and I am Cards fan. I honestly don't think Jose ever saw the CF sneak in towards 2nd. He tells Lindor to go back, See that the 2nd basemen is off the bag towards Lindor and knows the SS was by 3rd so maybe he was baiting Yadi to hold the ball longer by seeming like he was going to attempt 3rd again. Yadi just had a better view and knew that CF was getting close and could make the play.
