There is a bit of an argument for backing off.
You want the opposition to wallow in their own self pity. Do not give them a reason to focus on you. Let them keep seeing how crap they are.
That way they are more likely to keep playing crap.

      - Don't swing at 3-0 when leading big

Ok, on the unwritten rule thing, if the pitcher goes up 0-2, is he required to throw a garbage pitch to take it easy on the batter? That's the same thing, right? If a batter isn't supposed to swing when the pitcher can't find the zone for three pitches, shouldn't the pitcher take it easy on a batter who isn't seeing the ball well enough to hit it? I know this is 4+ years old, but it popped up today and I had to watch it again. Jomboy's breakdowns are great, and this one that highlights the inanity of the "unwritten rules" is one of his better ones. Cheers.
Edited to add: Just watched all the comments following the press conference. Saw one from Johnny Bench. No one doubts his baseball credentials, right? "Everyone should hit 3-0. Grand slams are a huge stat." I'll take his word for this. Cheers.

@AVERY HUEBEL just like football, if you don't want them to run up the score, stop them.
It's selfish to expect the other side to take it easy on you because you are being competitive enough. Even then, beaning a guy because "he watched his home run leave the park" goes back to being a crybaby.

it's one thing to complain about running up the score in a league like the NBA where there is a set amount of time left and each team takes turns having possessions. Sure you probably don't need to dunk on a breakaway with 40 seconds left when you're up 120-65, I can see how people wouldn't like that or find it unsportsmanlike. But baseball has no limit to how many runs you can score in an inning, so a comeback is ALWAYS possible. If you don't want to be scored on when you're down 10-3 then forfeit the game. Otherwise shut up and play better.

I have seen 10+ run innings in middle and high school happen, so I do not believe at any point in time it is impossible for there to be a comeback. That rule is like he said a rule because pitchers are wimps and have fragile egos. If a pitcher gives you a pitch you think you can crush, I do not care if it is 20-0 and the top of the 9th. If you want to swing you shouldnt be scolded for doing so. It is sad to see that the game is still being affected by dumb rules like this.

In 2001, Cleveland came back from a 14-2 deficit to win against Seattle. There have been hundreds of 7-run comebacks in MLB history. Do you owe it to the opposing team to strike out and give them a better chance to come back?
Play to entertain the fans and play to win until the game ends. If you're doing anything less, you don't deserve to be out there. "Unwritten rules" are trash, if a rule is important, it is written down. Not giving 100% in a child's game in order to protect other millionaires' feelings is ridiculous.
