      1) Cards’ manager asks them to check the equipment.
      2) Umpires determine bat hasn’t been illegally modified, but is damaged equipment.

It’s a good call. Your not going to know every minute detail of the rule book, so sometimes you come across instances where you simply don’t know what to call. Wish more umpires understood this. It’s okay to not know, as long as you not knowing isn’t about a major aspect of the game (like how to call a strike or what a general out is).

The past precident, as this has happened before in the 1930s , 40s and 50s, is that if the opposing team or officials notice a chipped or broken bat, they must object BEFORE the at-bat, not after. If they admit that they saw it before he came up, they can’t challenge after. This is not a rule but the precident set in earlier games that were appealed. This is what the MLB officials ruled in the prior instances. The precident is clear, they should make it a rule. This would resolve the confusion as it is becoming an issue again, apparently.

The coach asked for verification because, while it was impressive no matter what, it's important to make sure to protect the integrity of the game as well. Of course there's a little bit of metagaming going on by hoping the run won't count but like, I feel the integrity is worth it

From what i understand there is precedent to this rule though in that it has to be done before the At bat. Considering how long this one went with a few foul tips and a ball to only say something after a Grand slam is anything but good sportsmanship. It 's trying to weasel the rules in your favor. It's like playing a game for 8 innings in the rain and calling the game for weather in the 9th because your losing.

That is why the Cardinals were like, "Hey he just gave the fan the bat". He hit 2 HR's back to back and gave the fan the bat?? What player gives his bat away after back to back jacks? Same here. Never really followed baseball, but Jomboy's interesting and funny commentary of odd happenings and obscure rules is just great. His knowledge of the game + his way of simplifying it make it interesting to both fans and people like us. ESPN lost its way a long time ago and most of its commentators are unwatchable, but I can watch Jomboy highlights all day.

Umps probably noticed it but didn't think it was advantageous. No point in making a big deal out of it unless a formal complaint is made. Also baseball players are very superstitious so my guess is he liked the feel of the bat and had some success with it so he wanted to keep using it

Classy move by Castellano, that kid will have a lifelong memory and a souvenir to boot. It reminds me of an incident at a Laker game, when Rick Fox dove after a ball that was heading out of bounds and wiped out a whole bunch of spectators in the front row, including a little boy. The kid was scared and crying. Rick tried to cheer him up, but had to rejoin the game.
When the game ended, Rick grabbed the game ball, made a beeline to the kid and gave him the ball. Picked him up, posed for photos, etc. Love it!
