01:24 Very nice pronunciation of this color 天青色😀 As a Chinese, I would like to add an easter egg about this color, which comes from a well-known story: In ancient China during the Song Dynasty, there was an emperor, the Emperor Huizong, who was passionate about art. One day, he dreamed of the color of the sky after the rain, and he adored it. So he asked his craftsmen: 'Recreate the color seen where the clouds break and the blue sky emerges after the rain.'(雨过天青云破处,这般颜色做将来) True to expectations, the craftsmen did not disappoint and successfully created a color reminiscent of the clear sky following rain. Today, this color is often seen in Chinese porcelain and dyes, representing the enduring history of Chinese art. Do you remember, Seal U in Chinese market is called Song Plus.
@AutogefuhlChinese I love that ancient story about the Emperor's love of the specific blue colour of the sky, particularly as it clears after a Rain! Knowing that, I do see that colour blue in Chinese Porcelain. Its quite "blueautiful"😊 Is the Song Plus model a nod or tribute to the ancient Song Dynesty? As a musician myself, it's a very cool name!

I think the shared platform with a petrol drivetrain explains the boring and generic compact SUV design of this car. BYD's dedicated EV sedans are beautifully designed but their compact and mid sized SUVs are very boring.
@@gregb1599 Agree. I have a Seal and I'll be embarrassed by association when this ugly thing hits our local market. It may be time to de-badge my car when that happens ☹
@@vasil7410 It's different in China. Seal is not selling very well (BEV: ~3k, PHEV: ~7k, monthly), while this model is one of the best sellers in China (BEV: ~10k, PHEV: ~20k monthly). By renaming this vehicle to Seal, Seal's sales figure looks better.
In Ukraine, there is quite a lot of experience in the operation of Song Plus 2021 and Song Plus Champion 2023 (analogue Seal U), which were produced for the Chinese market. Impressions are only positive.
Still this particular model is an older PHEV based design and is a step below the Model Y, not a true competitor. BYD just launched their actual Model Y competitor, which is the Sea Lion 07, along with its sister car, the confusingly named Song L.
I'm a big BIG fan of your work. Greetings from Portugal and continue to bring us honest, well explained and detailed tests... like this one was a good example.
I am on holiday in Malaysia, yesterday in a shopping mall I sat in a byd Atto 3. Not driven just sat with engine on. Wow, the build quality and interior finish blew me away. I own an eniro in the UK. The Byd is far better build. I will be looking at byd for my next car
I live in Hong Kong and about 8 years ago when I was travelling somewhere in Guangdong province I saw a huge BYD factory. By that time BYD was quite unheard for foreigners. Never thought this company has come so far. Now it’s trying to get into premium markets.
Great review, Thomas! Bravo! I'd like to thank you again for the awesome review of the BYD Seal Sedan. It really helped me to decide before the purchase. Just bought a AWD version and could not be happier. Thank you again! Cheers!
We bought a cheap Atto 3 as a runabout car. Did not expect much but it has been great. Wrt charge speed the BYD seems lower than similar EV but it maintains the Max charge rate for a very long time unlike other EVs (like Tesla hitting peak for 1min and then tapering down). Maybe it is the same with this car since they have the same Blade battery?
The charging speed is curiously slow, but other than that it seems like a much better product than a Model Y. The BYD actually has an interior (and a very premium one at that), a much better build quality and a much more comfortable ride.

Thank you for a thorough review. What I think is shaking out is owners who have charging at home and those who have to rely on public charging a la petrol station fill up. If you can charge at home you can do little and often and do not care terribly how fast a recharge is because you never get that empty. If you live on floor 26 of a high rise you rely on public charging and its much higher cost and do care how long it takes to fill up. A BYD Seal works well if you can charge at home, but perhaps less well if you live on floor 26. I much prefer the UI/UX of the Seal to that of Tesla. However in terms of desirability of owning a Seal it sort of aspires to something built by Vauxhall, which luckily I have never owned. To be kind it is a bit better than a Reliant Robin, but should sell well.
The issues about this car that i found online are: 1-very soft suspension 2-slow acceleration 3- low ground clearence because its not built on electric platform…
Hey Thomas! You are always welcomed in Portugal. With so many reviews done here, you might as well just move here!!! :P I love cars and enjoy your reviews, so if one of these days you find that you need extra help just let me know!!!
I hate the integrated head rest seats. But bonus points on the rotating infotainment and a sun roof that actually still opens on an EV. Only Porsche Macan offers that. As for the styling, I'm getting some BMW X3 and VW Tiguan vibes.
Same with the Volvo XC40 Recharge, sunroof can also be opened and shaded. You're right about the headrests though, I guess this vehicle isn't for tall people. If they want to conquer Europe, they will have to change that!
@@autogefuehl No, I'm only driving Dolphin in carsharing service from time to time. But we don't have have BYD company itself here, only foficial side dealers that are selling official models, they saying that thay have some parts and it's no problem for order, that will come in 2 weeks approx, same for other (officially presented too) chinese companies and dealers. A lot of BYD buyers, but cars are new, like 2023 year of production, so they basically not falling appart yet. But we have a lot of people expirience with Geely models, we have even a factory here, but original/official spare parts costs a lot, basically, repairment costs of some Geely models will costs like a fixing a Volkswagen :D So a lot of people buying chinese cars, using it for warranty period (5 years or 150.000km) and then selling them fast. Also, with Geely example, people with warranty issues some times waiting for month for fixing problems (even if it's just jammed rear camera). I hope in Europe situation is better, cuz in my country there last year was like a chinese auto boom, but now people realised some downsides. It's just funny, that nowadays chinese cars repair can cost a German car) (also it depends on country a lot, I guess in current situation there are lot of problem with logistics)
Where Tesla still rules is efficiency at highway speeds. I would say if you drive a lot at 110 or 120, you’d notice a big difference with Chinese cars.
Around town, and obviously with very conservative driving, I can get better efficiency with a dual motor Seal versus my Model 3 RWD. I was quite surprised by this because I have always been impressed with the efficiency of my Model 3 and the efficiency I can extract from my Seal with careful driving is far better than manufacturer specs.
@@chjin1796The BYD Seal has regen braking when you lift off from the accelerator PLUS there is regeneration when pressing the actual brake pedal. The Tesla's brake pedal only uses friction brakes.
this interior of this car is only like medium or basic line in China actually, the involution or rat race of new auto maker(especially ev) in China is really severe, making high quality while keeping the prive low
The success depends on the pricing. Here in Austria and also in Germany the price is too high for what the car delivers. The key areas for an electric vehicle are efficiency, charging capabilities, integration of charging in the navigation as well as cabin and trunk space. These are all areas where the Model Y is better although the juniper update is not released yet. After the update it will be even harder to compete with the Model Y. But I expect that BYD will react if sales don’t develop as planned and start reducing prices. They also did it with the Atto3 which was way overpriced (still is in my view). In general Chinese car manufacturers set prices to high here in Europe (except MG -> which results in good sale figures). I guess they have to learn it the hard way that If you don’t have a known brand you have to start low and level up as your popularity and brand recognition grows. That’s how the Japanese car manufacturers did it and that’s how the Korean car manufacturers did it. This behavior is a stroke of luck for the European manufacturers and wins them some time to catch up.
Maybe you should share your views with your EU Commission currently investigating whether the cheap Chinese evs coming into EU are unfairly state subsidized.
Yes, pricing is not as competitive as buyers would like, but the EU politicians are already threatening to take steps against what they allege is ‘dumping’ of EVs in Europe, so if BYD were to bring it in at a far more competitive price, this would play into the politicians allegations , as their agenda is to protect European car manufacturers via tariffs and other measures, as opposed to letting the free market reign. A case of ‘damned if you do, damned if you don’t’.
when talking about Chinese car, state subsidized always been mentioned. Actually the last subsidized dude since end of 2022. 😂 no more subsidized even in Chinese domasitc market.
I’d happily own this vehicle, however as I like to keep cars for 10+ years, I’m not super keen to jump into a newly established brand (in Australia) like BYD, until they’ve got a proven track record of spare parts, and there’s more feedback about their service centres and overall brand attitude. Here in Oz, some companies like VW have terrible reputations for after sales support. So hopefully I can wait a few more years before my car needs replacing, so I can get more local customer feedback on the brand as a whole. Big thumbs up for physical buttons though.
US viewer here, if I saw this vehicle with no badges on it, I would have guessed that it was a Ford or Lincoln crossover. Definitely gives me FoMoCo vibes based on exterior design.
Its shame the EU is taxing chinese car by 38% so they can save eu car manufactures. BYD Seal U costs around 18k~20k in China and they add up to 40k~45k in EU. Of course there are transportation costs and many more but taxing 38% is tooo much. Wonder if its possible to directly buy it in China and then deliver to EU
In china, actually seal U are below the price range of model Y, real model Y competitors are Zeekr 001and Xpeng G6/G9, which are way better than model Y.
Here in Brazil, I must say we have the most expensive vehicles in the whole world, but BYD came and make the whole actual industry shake their dusts, like Stellantis, VW, GM, and even Volvo, that made me laugh.
Thank you for another great review. I am 187cm and are very interested in the (driver)seats you are reviewing. I have 3 kids and due to max kg load weight on EV's you can hardly have any baggage if we are full family. I still have my S-Max due to the load capacity on EVs.
I own a BYD Atto 3, a great value. This Seal U looks fantastic. We will be changing to a Model Y. The Big difference is the app and software updates and the charging system, which are much faster. I believe that in the long run, the Tesla will hold its value better and stay more current than no Teslas.
Welcome to Portugal. I hope you have fun. Great review and I lot to think about. BYD has a lot of points with this car. Do you think some software updates could have some effect in the drivebility in the future? I think this is a car for people u like to drive a ICE car and could think in the transition to a EV more easily. If this could beat Tesla Model Y? I don't know, but many people will feel more adapted to this car because it has a more familiar interior and exterior design.
In Australia, where we drive on the left hand side of the road, I just ordered a BYD Seal of a cheaper specification that is apparently not currently available in the U.K. or Europe. It is $50000 Aud - equivalent to 30000 Euros. It has fake leather seats, a 60kwh battery, a 460km range and a 150kwh battery.
@autogefuehl Yes it does. Sorry, I meant to write 150 kw motor & no head up display. Most of the rest of the car is identical. We can also buy the version sold in Europe & U.K. for $A59000.
Great review as always. I quite like the car, it definitely has potential. If they can improve the economy and the DC charging speed, it could be a real option to the Model Y. It’s a pity it is front wheel drive though.
I don’t want to have a home cinema in my car. 15inch is completely useless and I’m sure it would distract me while driving in town. Plus, I don’t find this elegant. But Byd is a serious competitor for western and Japanese/koreans brands so it’s very interesting to see your reviews on their models
15" is great for road maps.. each driver should always stay focus on driving and safety.. many accidents are linked with folks using their hp or speeding.. while driving..
I agree about the screen size. I think 10” is the biggest a car monitor should be. 15” occupies most of the dash, and I dont find it elegant. I also dont like the floating design. I think porsche got it right in terms of EV interior.
And large screens are horrible for people with poor night vision. I even turn my little 7in infotainment screen off when driving at night. Fortunately my car is old enough to still have a number of manual controls.
Nice review and nice car, i would prefer the Seal since i am not really a SUV guy. About leather of pleather....real leather is actually very sustainable as a natural product. Pleather is made out of oil....
Thank you very much for your interest in this topic. I also bought cars with animal skin leather seats before I did my research and got to know the industry. The most important thing is: With today's modern materials, you have nothing to lose, just to gain. You achieve the same kind of luxury and comfort or even better while having the same or better durability with less impact on humans, animals and the environment. You can use fabric/cloth, microfibre or leatherette. The classic approach is using oil/plastic as source material. Overall, a vehicle contains about 300 kg plastic. A car seat needs about 5 kg plastic. So the overall plastic share for the seats is very low and it is at this moment the most efficient way to produce a car seat. A couple of litres of fuel equals a car seat basically. So if you want to save oil/plastic, rather look at consumption for energy, fuel and heating and to other car parts than the seat. Note that animal skin leather also always contains a plastic coating for durability. However, long-term we should of course find raw oil alternatives. So going further, seats can be made from recyclables (e.g. from PET-bottles or old fishing nets) or even increased share of plant-based materials (like pine oil, canola oil or start-up materials like Pinatex from pineapple leaves or Desertex from cactus fibre or the mixed-plant-based Mirum, so be seen at ruclips.net/video/S1aNZeoatmE/видео.html). On a calculation base, by ditching animal skin leather from car interiors, the amount of emissions (CO2e) is reduced by 85 (!) % (www.press.bmwgroup.com/africa-dom-easteurope/article/detail/T0403389EN/on-the-market-from-2023:-bmw-and-mini-models-with-vegan-interiors?language=en) - and that is a very conservative calculation. So it is at this moment the most important thing you can do to make car interiors more sustainable. A good example for high-end luxury with ventilated animal free seats is the BMW X7 with Sensafin: ruclips.net/video/1pRNkW9nrrw/видео.html And the Kia EV9 with plant-based oil share: ruclips.net/video/6vXePQi_MAk/видео.html New leatherette materials can be superior in every aspect, even for cleaning: ruclips.net/video/u94YXJ72UTA/видео.html More and more natural materials are rising: ruclips.net/video/nRSsXEnwHDo/видео.html Also check out what the animal skin leather industry tried to with our channel: ruclips.net/video/nP_CvLlaFlI/видео.html For seeing how the animals are being treated and transported in the global leather industry, watch this footage: ruclips.net/video/tkjCAmq1_8E/видео.html Note that the footage is genuine and was recorded by a highly decorated investigative journalist in Germany I know myself personally. Also a group of researchers and German journalists from public media could recent directly trace the connection between car animal leather production and illegal burning down Amazon rain forest: www.daserste.de/information/reportage-dokumentation/ard-story/videos/illegales-leder-video-100.html In a high animal skin grade, the animals are specifically raised for this matter. However even if meat is the "first" misuse case, the hide remains a profitable body part. That means: If manufacturers put animal leather in a car and you demand it as a customer, you give your money to an industry that earns money by oppressing humans, animals and harms the environment, you make them more profitable. Alternatively, you could support industries with your wallet which try to improve the sustainability of materials. Also, if you turn the argument around to "meat is the waste of the leather industry" you realize that it doesn't make sense (and is ethically doubtful) to discuss the primary use of individual body parts of mammals. Mind experiment: You are getting slain down on the street; would it matter to you if it was for your smartphone or for your purse? Remember that animal skin leather is no different to fur, fur is just leather where the hair is still on. And fur is widely not accepted for clothing anymore, and of course not for cars. We cannot change what we have bought in the past, but with more information and compassion we can change how we decide in the future. For a great insight into sustainability in the automotive industry, you can also check out our extensive documentary: ruclips.net/video/-8gNXlRGngA/видео.html
Its hilarious that Tesla has been getting tons of *hit because of bad alignments etc. but when some other brand has that its completely fine and not even mentioned. Just praise for the interior even though it clearly isnt that well put together. But Thomas has some personal issues with Tesla Model 3/Y interiors because there is no instrument cluster. I dont know why people miss it so much: i understand the complain about not having HUD but instrument cluster is just useless and usually parts of it cant be seen when in perfect driving position because the steering wheel is on the way so you have to compromise your driving position to see speedometer which is stupid.
Very nice BYD, and looks like it has classy interior and comfort/space. BYD will for sure grow in Europe in 2024 now, with the new Dolphin, Seal and Seal U models.
Rather than competing with the Model Y, I think this compares well to the Enyaq, but what about the price 😞 Some people (Viking) say BYD are deliberately pricing high in Europe to keep sales low until they build up their delivery/distribution before dropping prices radically. What do you think?
Great video. About the SealU... I don't like, it looks like designed 10 years ago in the outside, a bit old fashioned look. Would go for the Tesla MY rather than this BYD
How are the different manufacturers implementing the speed beeping? Can you turn it off? Will it turn back on itself every time? In toyota in the past you could almost everything switch to wheel vibrations instead, so having something beeping all the time would be super distracting..
Chinese cars are about screens and tech, comfort and shiny stuff, maybe not so much about charging speed or sporty driving experience. Different in Europe and US
@@chjin1796 it’s true that I don’t know a lot, but all the reviews I’ve watched of Chinese EVs had this in common. High tech, a lot of shiny buttons and levers, big screens, shiny “piano plastic”, very soft, comfortable suspension
@@89bazoly The Chinese like these what you said. But the Chinese also want more charging speed and driving experience. Many cars in China use 800V platforms. China also has a lot of vehicles accelerating within 4 seconds. Some high -end models in China use air suspension, which can adjust the hard level and height level as needed.
@@chjin1796 I was just talking about the style for the masses, but I know that the high end Chinese EVs are the best there are on an engineering level and in build quality
@89bazoly For masses in China, a family generally owns one car. When buying the first vehicle, should consider family needs. Therefore, affordable cars that only focus on drivers are not popular in the market. Cars like Mazda's sales in China are dismal.
Elon Musk once mocked BYD, but even he is not laughing any longer. Just because it is an unknown company in the west doesn't mean it is not going to be a winning car. The confusingly named Seal U is part of the BYD Song family of cars, which sold 84,000 units ... just in DECEMBER of 2023. Almost all of those sales were in China, but BYD is now exporting their cars in earnest, and I wouldn't count them out. After all BYD will be the number 1 selling EV brand globally from now on, and part of the reason is they sell many many many cheaper models such as this Song Plus.
Im late to the party. Tested the model y in 2021-2022, and it did not make me move from my model3. This year i had to get a bigger car, a family car. I loved everything about the byd seal u, but there where three things. So much open space up front and no frunk? The storage back was a little lacking, seems like second row got too much space for legs in my opinion. And the driving experience… The car felt wobbly. I don’t even know how to explain it. I have driven expensive mercedes, older toyota and my family is a big fan of Kia. But this is the worst experience i ever had. Felt like going back to an ice car. Anyway, 10 days till i pick up my model y performance from berlin, and i still think i did the right choice. (Also tested enyaq, kona).
I love mid size Suv. Im waiting for Thomas to get his review on the Cupra Tavascan.. thats my dream Suv. THE Seal U has great interior with a lovely glass sunroof that open and close. Well designed. 🎉
Excellent review. I love the Seal, but the trunk doesn't meet my needs. I was looking forward for Seal U, but the charging time and performance leave a lot to be desired. I'll have to wait for Sea Lion 07.
IDK what this car adds that the Atto 3 doesn't. A bit bigger, a lot duller is my initial impression. What they needed was to come out with an AWD model of this size - a softroader to add some versatility and make a family holiday trip worthy.
Certainly Chinese vehicles, especially BYD, have taken a big step forward, but as for the SEAL U and the driving experience... it feels more like a "Whale" than a "Seal" (it feels like driving a small truck), it bounces from side to side massively, and you have to move the steering wheel a lot to get the car moving. In my opinion, driving the Tesla Model Y is much more pleasant and you feel safer...
At this point I'd wait for BYD Sea Lion 07 instead, Seal U or Song Plus has been out in Chinese for a few year already. They just change things up a little bit and move it from Dynasty Series sold exclusively in China to Ocean Series which is BYD's export models. The change in Seal U is only in appearance.
ironic, when showing "Tesla like interface" you chose the Heads Up Display adjustment. To date, Tesla hasn't released any of their cars with HUD. And the Model Y doesn't even have a gauge cluster. As if Tesla said, "Screw it. Driver's information is unimportant, because we think (wrongfully) that our cars drive themselves!"
Virtually none (almost none) of the reviews and comparisons talk about repairability. I understand it's important to sell new cars, but in Europ[e a car is often used, if not crashed, for 20 years. Can the car be repaired economically sustainably? That means, outside of warranty period - will you have plenty of parts availability for reasonable price? Will 3rd party workshops be able to repair parts? Is it possible to repair / refurbish battery by testing and changing only modules that stopped working or are in bad condition? An owner that can buy the car at age of 8 years will noit be spending 20k euro for a repair fur sure. I think long term sustainability is very sketchy with Tesla as well, for example the chassis being made of 2 parts basically after an accident or in case of heavy rust in some parts you need to replace half the car. At least we know the company is supporting their cars for 10+ years so far. What about Byd, is it going to be comparable? Worse? Better? Without keeping these important topics in discussion I feel these reviews are very superficial and only for super rich that enjoy throwaway cars. I don't know anyone in my circle of friends that can afford to throw 50-40 or even 30k euro away.
Is it correct that when charging a EV it requires approximately 10 % more to fill to its limit ,say a 60 kw battery requires 66 kw to be inputted to make it to its limit ?
Yes. These are charging losses. It depends on a) the vehicle and b) the speed you are charging how much the loss is. Interestingly, the faster u charge, the less loss u have but the worse it is on the battery 😵💫. Thus, slow charging is good for the battery but worse for charging losses. We did do a charging speed and charging loss comparison in this video where u can see it quite clearly: ruclips.net/video/yxwTkaGqjYM/видео.htmlsi=DtW_LSIV9-tzJrNr
When you charge to AC chargers, the car needs to convert that electricity from AC to DC and the converters have an usually efficiency of 92-97%. In cold weather the batteries need to be also heated up and depending how much the heater runs it will consume 2-5kWh more. At DC chargers there is no losses on conversion, but the batteries need to be heated up to 30-50 degrees Celsius and if you don’t preheat the battery before will take energy from the charger to heat it up.
Some real figures from my Atto3 for comparison. With AC charge, my wallbox says it's pumping 7kWh. The Atto3 apps says it's receiving 6.4kWh. So that's about 8.6% energy losses. Charging done at 25°C.
@@Manu-P8 In DC the conversion in done by the charger that is still connected to an AC power source. Do they charge the AC power in the charger or this is covered by the more expensive charge for DC?
Overwhelming majority of Americans travel 30 miles per day. We've been 100% electric for 4 years and had one EV previously for 2 years. Total miles driven around 90,000 miles. Went through the entire battery drama early. Yet we've never drained the batteries. Including many 1,000+ mile trips. Charge mainly at home.
Glad to have you Portugal. You basically did my journey from work to home ahahah Fun fact on min 17 when you did the 50 to 80, there was a radar there ahahah but thankfully it's just up to 80km/h ;)

01:24 Very nice pronunciation of this color 天青色😀
As a Chinese, I would like to add an easter egg about this color, which comes from a well-known story: In ancient China during the Song Dynasty, there was an emperor, the Emperor Huizong, who was passionate about art.
How do the Chinese do it, they have a story for everything, such good memory, remembering their ancestors and folklore. Admirable
This is our colleague from Hongkong btw ✌️
@AutogefuhlChinese
I love that ancient story about the Emperor's love of the specific blue colour of the sky, particularly as it clears after a Rain! Knowing that, I do see that colour blue in Chinese Porcelain. Its quite "blueautiful"😊
Is the Song Plus model a nod or tribute to the ancient Song Dynesty?
As a musician myself, it's a very cool name!
@@timmcgurl Yes! BYD Song is defined as dynasty Song 宋, a period of art and poem.

I think the shared platform with a petrol drivetrain explains the boring and generic compact SUV design of this car. BYD's dedicated EV sedans are beautifully designed but their compact and mid sized SUVs are very boring.
There is no pure petrol version of this car. The platform is designed for both PHEV and BEV.
It's an insult to use the Seal name as it's a totally different model!

I am on holiday in Malaysia, yesterday in a shopping mall I sat in a byd Atto 3. Not driven just sat with engine on. Wow, the build quality and interior finish blew me away. I own an eniro in the UK. The Byd is far better build. I will be looking at byd for my next car
We have a eniro(2021) and a atto3, the atto3 drives much better, we are waiting for the seal u, to change the eniro to seal u, we live in Ireland
I live in Hong Kong and about 8 years ago when I was travelling somewhere in Guangdong province I saw a huge BYD factory. By that time BYD was quite unheard for foreigners. Never thought this company has come so far. Now it’s trying to get into premium markets.
wrrr
From my reading, BYD Seal is cheaper than Tesla in Australia and is getting kudos for superior build and QA.
Great review, Thomas! Bravo! I'd like to thank you again for the awesome review of the BYD Seal Sedan. It really helped me to decide before the purchase. Just bought a AWD version and could not be happier. Thank you again! Cheers!
Thanks for tuning in, please recommend our channel!
I feel it's a car for family use and has their own charging pile at home, then it's a perfect one
LFP is the biggest reason. I would take same size LFP anytime

To be kind it is a bit better than a Reliant Robin, but should sell well.
i don't think Seal U is after Tesla Y....... BYD is after Toyota Rav4, Honda CRV owners looking at moving to EV
The issues about this car that i found online are:
1-very soft suspension
2-slow acceleration
3- low ground clearence because its not built on electric platform…
Hey Thomas! You are always welcomed in Portugal. With so many reviews done here, you might as well just move here!!! :P I love cars and enjoy your reviews, so if one of these days you find that you need extra help just let me know!!!
Looks Modern than Model Y
BYD Seal Above Tesla Model Y anyday
I hate the integrated head rest seats. But bonus points on the rotating infotainment and a sun roof that actually still opens on an EV. Only Porsche Macan offers that. As for the styling, I'm getting some BMW X3 and VW Tiguan vibes.
The Nissan Arya and some other EVs have an opening sun roof
Same with the Volvo XC40 Recharge, sunroof can also be opened and shaded. You're right about the headrests though, I guess this vehicle isn't for tall people. If they want to conquer Europe, they will have to change that!
Super review ! I still prefer the exterior styling of the Y, but interior of the Seal U and ride quality may give BYD the win.
This car is one of the most sold cars in Uzbekistan
I had decided to buy Tesla Y, but totally fell in love with the Byd Seal U - so I bought that today instead! So excited and happy! 🎉😍
We got a lot of BYD in my country today, people love it. The main question is about repairments costs.
any experience on that topic yet?

Interesting report!
You are amazing! This review gave me the best idea of which car to buy between those 2 manufacturers. Many thanks !! Greetings from Dubai :)
Best greetings! Feel free to recommend our channel!
Where Tesla still rules is efficiency at highway speeds. I would say if you drive a lot at 110 or 120, you’d notice a big difference with Chinese cars.
True! Especially due to cD value
@vasil7410 Tesla’s efficiency is achieved by single-pedal mode. But Chinese electric vehicles tend to retain the driving habits of gasoline vehicles.
@@chjin1796The BYD Seal has regen braking when you lift off from the accelerator PLUS there is regeneration when pressing the actual brake pedal. The Tesla's brake pedal only uses friction brakes.
Love the build quality!
this interior of this car is only like medium or basic line in China actually, the involution or rat race of new auto maker(especially ev) in China is really severe, making high quality while keeping the prive low
You should thank EU corruption for sanctioning Chinese electric cars sk ce they can't compete with price
"These are all areas where the Model Y is better", hmmm...🤔
Definitely gives me FoMoCo vibes based on exterior design.
ford is not cool, no one want to be like ford...
@@shuli6021cruel but true 😂
Its shame the EU is taxing chinese car by 38% so they can save eu car manufactures. BYD Seal U costs around 18k~20k in China and they add up to 40k~45k in EU. Of course there are transportation costs and many more but taxing 38% is tooo much. Wonder if its possible to directly buy it in China and then deliver to EU
In china, actually seal U are below the price range of model Y, real model Y competitors are Zeekr 001and Xpeng G6/G9, which are way better than model Y.
Beautiful ambience near the sea☺
Hi, Thomas The new BYD Seal U it's very cool!
Nice review as always ❤ ✌️
Good and fair review dude 👍
Thanks 🙏
The price for the 605km version in China is around 23k EUR, while in EU it's TWICE more expensive, as you say 45k!
This is actually nice to look at, unlike the Model Y.
At 11:11 he said “good build quality” and im losing it, staring at the uneven stitching above the glove box lol
Nice test! In my own town! Like this BYD model, and this review was very useful! Great job! Thank you!
Cheers! Best area!
Thank you for such balanced and informative reviews
What is the ground clearance?
Here in Brazil, I must say we have the most expensive vehicles in the whole world, but BYD came and make the whole actual industry shake their dusts, like Stellantis, VW, GM, and even Volvo, that made me laugh.
Thank you for another great review. I am 187cm and are very interested in the (driver)seats you are reviewing. I have 3 kids and due to max kg load weight on EV's you can hardly have any baggage if we are full family. I still have my S-Max due to the load capacity on EVs.
thanks for the awesome review, its a EV that i am waiting for in Australia.
Are we only getting the PHEV version in Australia?
I own a BYD Atto 3, a great value. This Seal U looks fantastic. We will be changing to a Model Y. The Big difference is the app and software updates and the charging system, which are much faster. I believe that in the long run, the Tesla will hold its value better and stay more current than no Teslas.
Portugal is such a beautiful country!!
How did it look in other colors than this blue?
This not supposed to be a Y competitor, the Song L and SeaLion coming this year!
Obrigado! The software updates wont change the suspension or smth though, I guess they could update charging speed though
In Australia, where we drive on the left hand side of the road, I just ordered a BYD Seal of a cheaper specification that is apparently not currently available in the U.K. or Europe. It is $50000 Aud - equivalent to 30000 Euros. It has fake leather seats, a 60kwh battery, a 460km range and a 150kwh battery.
very interesting! So it is available with leatherette in low trim in Australia then ?
@autogefuehl Yes it does. Sorry, I meant to write 150 kw motor & no head up display. Most of the rest of the car is identical. We can also buy the version sold in Europe & U.K. for $A59000.
@autogefuehl sorry again, Yes it is. Regards Craig Applegate
Cheers!
Great review as always.
I quite like the car, it definitely has potential. If they can improve the economy and the DC charging speed, it could be a real option to the Model Y.
It’s a pity it is front wheel drive though.
My view is that in order for BYD to do well, they must lower their prices. Why would I choose this over a Model Y if it's the same price?
Byd is thinking about it 😂, building a factory in Hungary and building its own fleet of shipping vessels in the near future
EU claimed they are too cheap and nowc considering whether they should increase the tariff on them.
Fairly speaking, Byd has better build quality and much decent interior.
and objectively much better looking exterior as well. Although It's not hard to make a better looking car than a Y.
I don’t want to have a home cinema in my car. 15inch is completely useless and I’m sure it would distract me while driving in town. Plus, I don’t find this elegant. But Byd is a serious competitor for western and Japanese/koreans brands so it’s very interesting to see your reviews on their models
agree
15" is great for road maps.. each driver should always stay focus on driving and safety.. many accidents are linked with folks using their hp or speeding.. while driving..
I agree about the screen size. I think 10” is the biggest a car monitor should be. 15” occupies most of the dash, and I dont find it elegant. I also dont like the floating design. I think porsche got it right in terms of EV interior.
And large screens are horrible for people with poor night vision. I even turn my little 7in infotainment screen off when driving at night. Fortunately my car is old enough to still have a number of manual controls.
If it was (at the same price) 4WD, under 8s to 100kmh and up to 200kw charging then it would be a great competitor
Nice review and nice car, i would prefer the Seal since i am not really a SUV guy.
About leather of pleather....real leather is actually very sustainable as a natural product. Pleather is made out of oil....
Cheers for tuning in!
A good example for high-end luxury with ventilated animal free seats is the BMW X7 with Sensafin: ruclips.net/video/1pRNkW9nrrw/видео.html
And the Kia EV9 with plant-based oil share: ruclips.net/video/6vXePQi_MAk/видео.html
New leatherette materials can be superior in every aspect, even for cleaning: ruclips.net/video/u94YXJ72UTA/видео.html
More and more natural materials are rising: ruclips.net/video/nRSsXEnwHDo/видео.html
Also check out what the animal skin leather industry tried to with our channel: ruclips.net/video/nP_CvLlaFlI/видео.html
For seeing how the animals are being treated and transported in the global leather industry, watch this footage: ruclips.net/video/tkjCAmq1_8E/видео.html
Note that the footage is genuine and was recorded by a highly decorated investigative journalist in Germany I know myself personally.
Also a group of researchers and German journalists from public media could recent directly trace the connection between car animal leather production and illegal burning down Amazon rain forest:
www.daserste.de/information/reportage-dokumentation/ard-story/videos/illegales-leder-video-100.html
In a high animal skin grade, the animals are specifically raised for this matter.
For a great insight into sustainability in the automotive industry, you can also check out our extensive documentary:

The stitching above the glove box does not match ! Is it the cam angle or there is actually a mismatch
Yes, at 11:10 and it's not because of the camera angle 🙂
I don't think that the Model Y's fate has been sealed yet for now😂😂
😂👍
Agree, also if new Model Y will be released soon in the second half of the year, will be definitely best selling car also in 2024
Y *AND* Seal will be a problem for others?
Hmmm. Tesla for charging infrastructure but BYD for quality and comfort. Thinking ... Great review, thank you.
Rather than competing with the Model Y, I think this compares well to the Enyaq, but what about the price 😞 Some people (Viking) say BYD are deliberately pricing high in Europe to keep sales low until they build up their delivery/distribution before dropping prices radically. What do you think?
new to ev, what would u pick, a new byd seal u or 1½ year old skoda enyaq 80 same cost in denmark
More competition is always good for consumers. No one wants to see a Tesla Monopoly.
Dutch coast looking awesome as always ;)
No sorry...is it in Portugal....
Great video. About the SealU... I don't like, it looks like designed 10 years ago in the outside, a bit old fashioned look. Would go for the Tesla MY rather than this BYD
The side profile kinda looks like the Q5 with all those creases
Is it popular with Navy Seals?
How are the different manufacturers implementing the speed beeping? Can you turn it off? Will it turn back on itself every time? In toyota in the past you could almost everything switch to wheel vibrations instead, so having something beeping all the time would be super distracting..
The shifting lever in my mind should be forward for D and backwards for R. Wouldn't that make intuitive sense?
For traditional petrol cars backwards is D...
Chinese cars are about screens and tech, comfort and shiny stuff, maybe not so much about charging speed or sporty driving experience. Different in Europe and US
You don’t know enough about Chinese cars. Different manufacturers have completely different styles.
What is doing BYD with FWD and only 9s to 100 kph ?? Come on, this is outdated .... As always, Superb review Thomas !!!

the sales figures already determined who's the Winner
Elon Musk once mocked BYD, but even he is not laughing any longer. Just because it is an unknown company in the west doesn't mean it is not going to be a winning car. The confusingly named Seal U is part of the BYD Song family of cars, which sold 84,000 units ... just in DECEMBER of 2023. Almost all of those sales were in China, but BYD is now exporting their cars in earnest, and I wouldn't count them out. After all BYD will be the number 1 selling EV brand globally from now on, and part of the reason is they sell many many many cheaper models such as this Song Plus.
Does it compete with the Ssangyong Korando? 🤔
And the driving experience…
The car felt wobbly.
(Also tested enyaq, kona).
yep gotta agree !
the Seal U being a front wheel drive, whats its turning circle in comparison to model Y?
I love mid size Suv. Im waiting for Thomas to get his review on the Cupra Tavascan.. thats my dream Suv. THE Seal U has great interior with a lovely glass sunroof that open and close. Well designed. 🎉
Jut googld Tavacn and what a disgusting form factor an SUV coupe is. To each it's own though!
Nice qashqai. I am curious about the longevity of that opening roof in combination to the instant acceleration of the performance version 😅
Thomas, pls put back some 20 sec sequences with background music before every part of the video😢 you had before and it was really nice.
Excellent review. I love the Seal, but the trunk doesn't meet my needs. I was looking forward for Seal U, but the charging time and performance leave a lot to be desired. I'll have to wait for Sea Lion 07.
Thank you very much.
IDK what this car adds that the Atto 3 doesn't. A bit bigger, a lot duller is my initial impression. What they needed was to come out with an AWD model of this size - a softroader to add some versatility and make a family holiday trip worthy.
Byd added a dmi system to it, so it can use oil and electricity at the same time
The shape is so old fashion!😮
Awesome review, as always.
I feel like the glove compartment sewing should be a bit more aligned.
Morning! Does the BYD feel premium inside or cheap?
BYD is not a premium car brand, Denza Fangcheng bao and Yangwang is
The Seal sedan feels more premium and feels better put together than Tesla Model 3.
See remarks in the video!
Anything feels premium except tesla
This is like a medidum class
Certainly Chinese vehicles, especially BYD, have taken a big step forward, but as for the SEAL U and the driving experience... it feels more like a "Whale" than a "Seal" (it feels like driving a small truck), it bounces from side to side massively, and you have to move the steering wheel a lot to get the car moving. In my opinion, driving the Tesla Model Y is much more pleasant and you feel safer...
yes indeed
At this point I'd wait for BYD Sea Lion 07 instead, Seal U or Song Plus has been out in Chinese for a few year already. They just change things up a little bit and move it from Dynasty Series sold exclusively in China to Ocean Series which is BYD's export models. The change in Seal U is only in appearance.
In China, BYD don't salt this model but another model call SeaLion 07. with 4WD and 530hp.
This is very nice ev car and the hibird system is even better for the famliy.
ironic, when showing "Tesla like interface" you chose the Heads Up Display adjustment.
Very good point yes! It’s of course something that cannot be assessed at this point so very hard for us to
Is it correct that when charging a EV it requires approximately 10 % more to fill to its limit ,say a 60 kw battery requires 66 kw to be inputted to make it to its limit ?
Good report thanks!
@@Manu-P8 In DC the conversion in done by the charger that is still connected to an AC power source. Do they charge the AC power in the charger or this is covered by the more expensive charge for DC?
The moment you say "very good build quality" at 11:16 the stitching not matching is a torn in my eye
I thorough test would have included an urban route, with ramps, parking, low speed ride etc.
The new Sea Lion seems more similar to the Seal and a generation ahead.
Yep but it will be probably years until that one is available in Europe
FYI. the entry level price of this thing is 20k euro in China.
wow... whats the Model Y entry price?
@@autogefuehlhi, just checked, the price for model y in China starts from 33k euro
Guess that explains the fact explosive sales of BYD in China
Will there be an awd version
there is but not sure when it will reach Europe. 390Kw
You basically did my journey from work to home ahahah
Fun fact on min 17 when you did the 50 to 80, there was a radar there ahahah but thankfully it's just up to 80km/h ;)
Very goog video!! We just have one.
i dont know, maybe i missed it, but what is the topspeed?
175 kmh 110 mph I mentioned it somewhere
