I want to imagine Odo asking for increasingly ridiculous things and Weyoun just agreeing without question "And I want Dukat to sign this statement saying he's a stupid stupid doo-doo head" "I'll have him sign it immediately" "And he has to read it on the Promenade in front of everyone" "I'm certain he won't object to that" "And he has to wear a ballerina tutu while doing it" "I'll have one replicated in his size" "It shouldn't be his size" "Oh of course. The Dominion War was one of the greatest story arcs of Star Trek. You had the good guys having to make hard decisions, and people on the other side who weren't totally evil but who still felt they had to serve their side.
Rocks and shoals is one of the best star trek episodes ever. Phil Morris should have gotten an Emmy. He portrayed the character with absolute and unwavering loyalty.
I remembered Keevan and the Jem'hadar were in "Rocks and Shoals". I forgot Vedek Yasim and Kira were ALSO in that episode. Two absolute emotional slammers in one hour, peak DS9.
The reason Dax isn’t in much of the episode is the actor has a skin condition and can’t be in heavy sun for long. I think I read there was a heatwave during filming this. The guys in full Jem Hadar make up were clearly suffering!
Fun fact about the USS Centaur (the Starfleet ship chasing the Jem'Hadar ship): Most ships seen in Trek at this point were physical models made from scratch, but the Centaur (and most of the ships seen in the opening shot) were "kitbashes", which are ships built by taking various pieces from Star Trek model kits (like you can find at any hobby shop) to create a new "Frankenstein" ship. These ships don't hold up to scrutiny as well, which is why they're usually limited to being placed in the background or brief shots (hence why the camera never lingers on the Centaur). The Centaur was actually build by a member of the crew for a young fan, but someone saw the model, liked it, and decided to use it in the episode instead (he built another model for the fan).
Once you finish DS9 I hope you'll immediately watch "What We Left Behind" the documentary of Deep Space 9. All our actors are interviewed ( some 20 years or so after the series ended). You'll learn some very interesting things about the show and see the wonderful personalities of our beloved characters. It's a wonderful documentary on every level!!!
If you can obtain this - it was fan-funded, with Cast and Crew involved. I've the blu-ray, after contributing money. Not in stores -maybe still thought the website. Excellent -with extras -and songs. The fan funding got certain element of DS9 film, preserved in Los Angelas archive, to be taken out, and scanned in HD! All of ST:tNG was taken out of archive, scanned in HD and rebuilt into episodes, for blu-ray, and repeats. The blu0rays didn't sell as much as what Paramount wanted -so DS9 and Voyager have not been rebuilt in HD for disc or repeats, just up-graded. Yet, as those two series were filmed, as they went on. more and more effects were digital -some digital files so exist, others would need to be remade. Enterprise, was filmed with digital camera, effects, eventually full-HD, so they look fine on Blu-ray. More modern Trek, is current technology.
As "secondary" characters go, nothing beats DS9. Weyoun, Garak, Dukat, Winn, Nog, Rom, and even a few yet to come. All of them were really developed, consistent, compelling characters.
You’re so dramatic, I love it 😂 And it’s so good seeing someone react to DS9 cos it’s honestly one of the best TV shows of all time and by far the best Star Trek show.
“I'm willing to bet that you've brought one of those famed Starfleet engineers who can turn rocks into replicators.” Wild line in that it shows the Dominion does respect one aspect of the federation and perhaps fears it.
The old Star Trek Magazine had a great article about how the larger ships were supposed to be created by Wadi, Karema, Hunters of Tosk and the blue faced Dominion species but the makeup budget couldn't handle all of that with the heavy VFX cost per episode. Just pretend there are Wadi engineers below decks, toiling away and wishing they were gambling instead!
Maybe it's just because I was trained as an engineer but I feel like that line is pretty iconic. I mean Miles freakin' O'Brien is who he's asking about, YES he can turn rocks into replicators. Even beyond a character or a profession or their technology, the line honors that Star Trek is all about extreme competence. The core of every good Trek series is highly able, dedicated characters working together to solve any problem space throws at them.
@@jasoncaldwell5627 Sure he would. Maybe more by the book than Miles, certainly more by the book (that Scotty wrote) than Scotty, but I think he'd manage fine. In terms of engineering anyway; he hasn't got the combat or command training of the other two (though he's likely a better pilot). Plus they could always mess with his visor.
Lillian Chauvin (Vedek Yasim) was in "Predator 2" and "Universal Soldier", Phil Morris (Third) is the son of Greg Morris who was in the original Mission Impossible.
"Rocks a Shoals" was filmed in a California location, at like 110F. A making of this episode details how the actors/stunt men in Dominion costumes, and like Nog and Gary - and make-up suffered in the heat. They had to set up a "cooling tent" and a few "cooling vans" for the cast and crew, provide a lot of water, medical care for heat-stroke. You can see in close-up of the Jem Radar that their eyes are really red. It's an epic episode, filmed in difficult conditions. And, O'Brien, tears his pants!!!
USS Centaur was the last physical model created for Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. All other shots from now on, other than b-roll or shots of DS9 itself, are CGI. It's a kit-bash of an Excelsior saucer and engines, with a Miranda / "Reliant" torpedo bar on top.
It's a nice ship. Worst kit-bash ever is the Yeager Class. I'd love to see Ollie do Voyager, if for no other reason to give him context when he sees an Intrepid class in DS9, but I want him to finish DS9 first and quick before Paramount crack down on him. I didn't expect him to get past season 3 tbh, previously nobody even got to the end of season 1 before they got a pain in the neck with the copyright stuff.

We're used to the status quo changing in an episode of a two parter, someone taking over the Enterprise for example, but this was on another level. DS9 tried to push the Trek "formula" as much as possible
Great reaction Ollie. Have saved these up so I can binge watch and it’s a real delight how much you are loving it! Great to see someone appreciate this brilliant tv for the first time!
Centaur might be one of my favorite designs, basically they threw an excelsior-class saucer on two warp nacelles and a torpedo launcher then threw it at the Dominion.
Terry Farrell had a problem with exposure to sunlight. Her skin just couldn't take much of it. So, on this episode, which was heavy on location shooting, they had to write her out. So, they injured her in the crash
It's funny, every time you see a Jem'Hadar character that we talk to, you always say "he isn't like other Jem'Hadar". You're now on season 6 and still saying it. Have you not caught on quite yet? :-) - the Jem'Hadar are normal people. Genetically programmed to kill, yes, but they all - each of them - have personalities and wants and wishes. Every Jem'Hadar is unique. They always have been. That's what makes them so tragic. They aren't Borg.
Its interesting that Nog began the episode with the mentality to not walk in front of Garak because of the events on Impok Nor last season, then when they were released he was rushing ahead of him. Not sure if its significant, but thought I would point that out. Also Kevan, the Vorta, is a real piece of shit just like Weyoun....except that, for all his faults, Weyoun is actually an interesting and more complex character as you'll find out later on. Kevan is just a one-dimensional, self-serving POS and I half expected Sisko to just shoot the smug little prick anyhow. For all the faults with their blind loyalty to the Vorta and the Founders, the JemHadar are shown here to have their own sense of honor and duty. Third gave his word to Sisko and would have kept it regardless, and both he and Sisko came to respect each other despite how they knew the end would go. Sisko showed them enough honor to bury them properly and not just leave them to rot. Finally, I'm not sure Kira actually became a "collaborator" as much as she simply fell in line and accepted her situation. She has no loyalty to the Dominion, and certainly no love for Dukat (who yes is showing his creepy villain chops more and more -- and believe me, you ain't seen nothing yet!) or Weyoun and would have turned on them the moment Sisko and the Federation returned. But the Vedek did show here that, even in her current situation, there are still better ways than just waiting for liberation and accepting the Dominion's occupation. She needed that little reminder that, yes opposition is going to be ugly, but its better for your soul than just playing along.
But isn't "fell in line and accepted her situation" what some of the collaborators did? Kira tends to have a black/white binary view of collaboration, but if Bajor was like other occupations there were probably cases that were a bit more complex. (Kai Opaka for example.) Even with literal Nazi occupation I think there were individuals who collaborated with them to a degree, but at least thought they could mitigate the damage by doing so rather than having any love or loyalty to Nazis.
i hadnt really seen it before, but i think ducat and the rest of cardassia was thinking they could team up with the dominion conqure bajore, and the alpha quadrant and then dump the dominion and have a huge empire.
If you want to know whats different about Bashir in that first scene, Siddig didn't really appreciate the addition of genetic enhancement to his character, so he always played it kind of flat.
He didn't love the genetic enhancement (as a reflection of how he might've played some earlier scenes if he'd known), but he DEFINITELY didn't like the addition of twerpy lines where for some reason Bashir wants to incessantly show off random math calculations every episode :)
Kira the terrorist who hates collaborators realising she's become one. DS9 is just on another level when it comes to showing the complexity of people and that nothing is ever so simple in war.
cope and seethe. I could easily explain how we are correcting the errors you have unwittingly forced upon us but I am tired of defending myself from your false accusations.
3:55 Thats right, a _thirty-two point seven_ percent chance. *Thirty-two* has always been associated with disaster in the Star Trek Genre. But, the number *seven * has always gone along with the heroes and / or good guys. We are being warned the war will be especially devastating, but that Starfleet will win in the very end. 😉
Keevan is no Weyoun, but he's a top three Vorta for me

Season 6 is the absolute BEST season of this show and probably the Trek franchise in general. The scary part here is that the Federation and Klingons are getting their butts kicked by what amounts to the little finger of the Dominion. Rom's idea for those special mines is the only thing stopping the Alpha Quadrant from being totally overrun right now. I noticed a goof in 6X1. When Jake and Wayoun are walking along the promenade we see at least a few ARMED Bajoran security personnel walk past, yet this is BEFORE Odo made his request to Weyoun that they be reinstated. Perhaps the promenade scene was meant to be shown later in the episode?
The Jem'hadar cannot surrender, they serve the vorta who serve the founders, no matter what, it is the order of things. Also remember the entire federation is at war, so somewhere out there, Picard and the crew of the USS Enterprise 1701-E is fighting. Paramount made a huge mistake not making a movie out of this!
*Priest commits suicide in public protest*. Ollie: 43:47/44:53 "Maybe the episode will have a happy ending." 😬🥺 DS9 gets really dark sometimes. But it does it so, so well. 28:16 DS9 hasn't killed off any main characters (yet?), but its recurring characters are definitely in danger. Bareil had 7 episodes, Eddington had 8, and on Patreon you've just recently had the death of a character with 9 appearances. So.... who's next?
30:05 Wait.... Maybe they could not get rid of the grass when they filmed on location, But there is no reason they could not have taken out the sounds of the birds! 😒
I always felt like this show became more serialized, in response to the success of Babylon 5, which was really the first show to start doing that back then. DS9 also started using more CGI, in the space battles, about now, after seeing what B5 could do, with a much smaller budget. I do think that show would be right up your alley, even more so than something like Star Trek: Voyager, which I assume you're continuing to. Voyager is ok. Babylon 5 is one of the all time greatest sci-fi shows, and much more epic than any of the Star Treks.
Glad you loved the episodes, Ollie! DS9 really hits the gas here and never really lets up very much. And as for Keevan, don't worry. He gets a memorable, fitting, and utterly hilarious retribution later in the season for what he did here. :D
I like how Weyoun legitimately wants Bajor to be an ally of the Dominion and berates Damar for his bigotry, actually shows a depth to the Dominion that they would actually lift heaven and earth to protect a species that has committed to be under their protection. Even if there still is a bit of a creepy cult like motive to it.
"Serialised" was something of a taboo word for Star Trek as it's not very suitable for syndication. But the writers knew that was the way to go and it certainly works. I love when Garak looks under his eyebrows. He just looks dangerous in those shots - dangerous but fully in control of himself.
It was pretty much taboo across the board, not just for syndicated series. The argument was always that it was tougher to 1) maintain viewers that HAD to tune in every week to keep up with the plot (and remember all the previous developments) and 2) get new viewers since they would be frustrated coming in and not know what was going on. Never mind the success and popularity of soap operas that did just that on a DAILY basis, viewers were seen as having short attention spans and wanting to put in little effort to keep up with a series. Decades later some show called 24 comes along, then Lost... and their success seemed to finally convince studio execs that serialized tv shows were viable in the ratings market. Nowadays I see some reactors on youtube complaining 'oh, this is just a filler episode', 'when are we getting back to the main story', 'this episode didn't really have an impact' etc... amazing how times have changed.
This season doesn’t waste any time showing how bleak things have already got, with the fleet and crew already pretty battered and war-weary. It’s cool seeing Garak a proper member of the Defiant crew though. It was also weird seeing the station full of Cardassians and Jem’Hadar too. I actually thought they should’ve changed the opening titles too, replace the Starfleet ships with Cardassian and Dominion ships, have the logo change to “Terok Nor” and put Marc Alaimo, Jeffrey Combs and the others in there.
It took people's self control to avoid mentioning the optimism and excitement of the closing scene of the previous episode goes away pretty fast. --------------------------- Obedience brings victory Victory brings life
It's a rarity in general scifi, but typical for DS9 that a rather attractive species can be made out to be so villainous. Usually the bad guys are ugly (and there are plenty of them here) but this is a nice change.
TNG never went these places because Gene had certain ground rules on acceptable stories - his utopian vision was of a Boy Scout/choir boy view of the Federation. Everything was black and white, and Sarfleet personnel always wore the white hat. But DS9 intentionally decided to portray the univese in a very chaotic way, and our heroes often found that there were grey areas between right and wrong. Watching some your reactions tells me that you are at the threshold in your life of discovering tha tthe world isn't an ideal place - and as you keep on watching DS9, you will see tha they often left our characters in a moral conumdrum.
its interesting that you think a main character dyeing isn't out of the question. it does show how much different DS9 is to any other star trek show. i wonder if thats the serial nature of the show, With shows like TNG there would never be a thought of say jordy getting killed, everything would go back to normal by the end of an episode or 2 parter. but in ds9 every episode has consequences. like they didnt lose the station at the beginning of the episode and get it back by the end or something
@@E_y_a_l nope... I swear to God there was an episode wear Sisko took off his jacket and had another combadge on his vest. Anyway it’s too much to have the vest underneath the jacket. Notice in this episode on the hot planet. Too many layers.

They succeed in making us truly hate the despicable, self-serving Vorta, Kevan. The Jem hadar come off much more honoralbe than this particular Vorta. I won't spoil the episode for you, but i can tell you that he will appear again in a later episode...

Oh, I cannot wait for Ollie to get to In the Pale Moonlight. I will say nothing beyond the title. But one of the finest hours of television ever made.
39:50 Nog put his back to Garak here, either he’s too scared and not thinking or he decided to trust him.
Fun fact, the actors who play garak and dax, both were in the movie series hellraiser.
12:16 to 12:26 is one of the wisest conversations in the entire series. 😢
I love all three of the Siskos.
The other Dominion species are equally tragic.
HE TORE HIS PANTS!
Thanks, Oliver! 🖖
@@ThomasReeves-s7u All true. These things are not so black and white. There are too many gray areas here.
As a mere 65% hertosexual man I have to say.. there is something about Bashir's arms in that opening scene that just does it for me lol
i hadnt really seen it before, but i think ducat and the rest of cardassia was thinking they could team up with the dominion conqure bajore, and the alpha quadrant and then dump the dominion and have a huge empire.
season 6 tends to be my favorite.
also, the last two seasons of DS9 are pretty dark at times, which is actually what i love about it
If you want to know whats different about Bashir in that first scene, Siddig didn't really appreciate the addition of genetic enhancement to his character, so he always played it kind of flat.
He didn't love the genetic enhancement (as a reflection of how he might've played some earlier scenes if he'd known), but he DEFINITELY didn't like the addition of twerpy lines where for some reason Bashir wants to incessantly show off random math calculations every episode :)
Congratulations on 24K 👍
Kira the terrorist who hates collaborators realising she's become one. DS9 is just on another level when it comes to showing the complexity of people and that nothing is ever so simple in war.
Season 6 off to a great start
Let's go, I am ready for your reactions to it. This is a great season.
Thanks Ollie, the pass 12 hours have been depressing. You're a bright spot.
agreed, but tell that to the ukrainians in the trenches or the palestinians in the hospitals.
Amen, brother.
Today matched the start of season six very closely.
cope and seethe. I could easily explain how we are correcting the errors you have unwittingly forced upon us but I am tired of defending myself from your false accusations.
@@igorbuckel8060 Tell that to the hostages the Palestinians are still holding captive, including 3 children, one of them is just a baby.

Thats right, a _thirty-two point seven_ percent chance.
*Thirty-two* has always been associated with disaster in the Star Trek Genre.
But, the number *seven * has always gone along with the heroes and / or good guys.
We are being warned the war will be especially devastating, but that Starfleet will win in the very end.
😉
I love your "Quark's Bar" t-shirt! 🙂
If you thought DS9 has been good up until now, these last two seasons will demolish your expectations. This is astonishingly great TV.
They better be nice to Jake.
Yes!!!! Excellent set of episides!!
Perhaps the promenade scene was meant to be shown later in the episode?
so really Rom saved the alpha quadrant
@@joeeyaura It was he who also figured out what the Keiko-Par Wraith was up to so he also probably saved the whole galaxy!
So.... who's next?
shhh
Frodo as a vorta 😂
The Jem'Hadar are awesome but also tragic. And what happens to that Vorta... no spoilers.
The Jem'Hadar are much more thoughtful and intelligent than they appear to be.
Doberman Pinschers crossed with timber wolves are more thoughtful than the Jem'Haddar appear to be.
It took people's self control to avoid mentioning the optimism and excitement of the closing scene of the previous episode goes away pretty fast.

Obedience brings victory
Victory brings life
It's a rarity in general scifi, but typical for DS9 that a rather attractive species can be made out to be so villainous. Usually the bad guys are ugly (and there are plenty of them here) but this is a nice change.
15:08 Vader in the background?
I want it now
The poor guy in the back.
The Algorithm is life
one more season. well yes guess 2 since you havent seen this one yet.
curious to know three people you think will die and three you think won't
Welcome to serialized Trek.
I guess you forgot Tasha Yar died in TNG, as well as Data in ST:10.
@@E_y_a_l oh i did forget about tasha, i still dont count data though. since he just keeps coming back, though tasha did too
What do you mean 6 hours? Lol
you'll have to wait a bit, but you will see keevan (the vorta) again
Yeah, because surprises are bad things for reactors. 🤨
That's a SPOILER, you dumbass.
WTF is wrong with you?
Am I the only one muttering to myself "I HAATE Ferengi..." lol
I love Ferengi. That was so... poetic.
@@richardstarkey2247 have you not seen the episode "The Magnificent Ferengi" yet?
Did the STARFLEET uniforms actually have an outer jacket with combadge...a vest with another combadge...a department color shirt and an undershirt???
Jealous?
@ why the stupid comment?
I don't understand what you are asking, they move the combadges between clothes, Garak just put a combadge on his own clothes.
@@E_y_a_l nope... I swear to God there was an episode wear Sisko took off his jacket and had another combadge on his vest. Anyway it’s too much to have the vest underneath the jacket. Notice in this episode on the hot planet. Too many layers.
@@kunserndsittizen2655 The Starfleet combadge has a built-in mini-transporter so it actually beams itself to the next layer of clothing once the top layer is removed. Very nifty. ;)
They succeed in making us truly hate the despicable, self-serving Vorta, Kevan. The Jem hadar come off much more honoralbe than this particular Vorta. I won't spoil the episode for you, but i can tell you that he will appear again in a later episode...
I won't spoil it either but that episode is quite funny
You'll find out in the middle of season 7 why dukat wanting to be intimate with kira is even more creepy
Dukat is bad in these episodes, but he hasn't lost his mind, not yet. You'll see it, and it is absolutely heartrending. A man who was hardly mentally stable finally breaks.
Cool can you tell us more about what Ollie will see later? Dying to know.
If the war arc were just one episode shorter... we would never have had rocks and shoals.
