An old country boy like me can definitely relate to the tractor rebuild. Very cool. Great job. Enjoy your videos very much
Ralph is a great name and Mr.Finley,is adorable, don't worry about what projects you do,US real subscribers will keep watching, Love always Jim
Dale is our man..trustworthy, efficient..good at what he does..heck yeah y'all !!!
What a deal you two got with that tractor. Thanks to Aaron's diesel and mechanical skills it works like a dream.
Really glad you two are back up and running again , I had no idea what happened, then I watched the video of Aaron explaining about his health issues so glad he’s doing much better, awesome he stopped alcohol just by doing that is a massive game changer for his health you guys are awesome
Love the tractor content! Seeing y’all just slowly and casually work on these budget projects always reminds me that the project isn’t just about completing something. It’s also about learning and making memories along the way!
Exactly! I wish my parents would live around that theory.
It's always great to see her smiling face and how you both work together to get things done.
Great job restoring an old John Deere and keeping it out of the junk heap.
Also good thing you can keep one alive from the time when you don't need to pay a subscription for it to work!
Satisfying to watch the rebuild. Can't wait to see more restoration. Good job, all the best to you and Ralph.
So flippin’ awesome! Fender mounted toolbox is sorta steampunk!
That motor will serve them for a very long time! Very satisfying repair. Hydraulics working too!!
Ralph and John Deere Rocks
the best permatex product ever is indianhead gasket shellac. i love that ya'll got aaron a good project for his healing time. hopefully we see you both on hrpt.
A tractor like that should be very useful around the shop, moving cars, trunks, boats, .... Here is a like and comment to help your channel grow and get you the recognition you deserve.
So glad to see you guys back and please enjoy life nice to see you are not working so much great tractor too
Yeah, they need to build a big rubbery pusher plate for the front of it!
Great video. Your furbaby is precious and sure loves his humans.
I really enjoy this tractor rebuild I also watch Derrick work on tractors. Thanks for such interesting videos.
Personally, I would watch you and Aaron rebuild a bicycle if that's what you decided to do. I love watching you two no matter what your working on. I'm just glad Aaron's feeling better and your doing videos again.
Agreed !!
Sure do appreciate that!!
I enjoyed watching tractor rebuild ,but starting it without radiator on is a no no
Why you have a shop with sheet metal sides and have big wooden doors that have big holes in them why
Very glad to see you two back out in the shop together ❤️. The new vibe is obvious between you, great job taking a life event and capitalizing on it to make you stronger. Excellent job on Ralph too.
I remember the beginning and it being called "in the shop with Emily". I started then and have loved every minute. Getting to meet you two in Champaign Illinois with my Daughters was amazing day and ill never forget it. I agree with Bob Cox below id watch yall rebuild a bicycle.
When he came driving back into frame you can totally see that grin. Have fun be safe you guys.
I love how relatable your content is. Doing projects not having the tools and having to go to the parts store. Reusing parts you can't remove or source. Not like main stream channels that feel more commercial. I'm in the UK and have little interest in tractors but watching you both revive this had me hooked. Keep up the content 👍👍
Sounds really good! Quality work as usual. Emily's face when it fired is priceless!
Aaron, get you a carbide scraper.. like a "Super Scraper"... it rips gaskets like that right off. keep it flat to your work and you'll be amazed.
I love how she innuendoes,, giggles, and Aaron acts like he didn't hear a thing..
Getting a kick out of how excited Emily is when the tractor started for the first time. This has been fun to watch.
New subscriber here.. I picked you up on sick week, thought it was awesome how you guys went around helping anybody that needed it.. enjoyed your engine tractor rebuild. Also have been surfing your boat videos . Really digging your content. Brought a tear to my eye when you showed the old 64 and told how the previous owner passed away. May he rest in peace and condolences to the family. Thanks again peace
Sure glad you’re here!!
The hydraulic filter gets clogged often. It’s a washable metal filter. 3 bolts remove the cover behind the rear left wheel. Slow or whinny hydraulic response is usually an effect that reminds me to clean mine. Good luck with it. You can’t kill that thing. It’s a tank.
It's a Yanmar
@@kd5inm yep. Japanese.
That’s one massive flywheel on that little engine, that gives you that smooth low end torque!
All fluid (no air) SHE WORKS !!!!! HOORRAY!!!!!!! ❤
(You do good work.)
So Aaron has a custom piston table, and a custom parts washer?! Man no fair! ( Although it sounds like the parts washer can be finicky sometimes ;-) )
Great to see ya both back spinning wrenches .. the smiles say it all that 650 is a real work horse .. had one for yrs and never a serious lick of trouble ...great find
Hi from Ralph in the UK.
Just a suggestionpn fitting your rings., the ring with you put in the centre groove , may I suggest that is the compression ring and the shape of the ring is called a ridge dodger and is designed to miss any wear in the bore that has heavy wear in it, as anew full sizwd ring will hit the ridge and break mon contacting the ridge first time it comes up the bore.
Allso if you slide the shell bearings in you minimise the risk of geeting dirt trapped between the rod as the new shell scrapes any dirt out as it rotates into place.
I have replaced both main and big end shells in situ without removing the engine or crank Many a time when a crank looks bad, it is often the material from the white metal bearing and comes off the crank easily with parafine and wet and dry.
Place a roofing fent nail in the oil hole of the main bearing journal and wind the shell out, replace the same way.
Good content keep up the channel and lo0ok after the squirrels!!
My best friend and I bought one just like it last year and we like it so much. We didn’t have to rebuild the engine but had to do some other things, they are real cool little workhorses.
You guys are so entertaining! Enjoyed the Deere rebuild, great content. Aaron is so calm and chill.👍🏼
Guys, I have been waiting with great anticipation for this episode!!!! I love old tractors, and to see both of you working on this together, with a super low budget, and making it run again is inspirational! THANK YOU! I would love to see you guys get into free or super cheap projects to get running, just to mix your regular content up! Congrats and keep up the great work!! - Mark
Good afternoon. Our rain is all white and fluffy up north. Shovel shovel. Good for low speed drifting into the drifts.
Ralph is BADASS👍
Great job on the assembly.
I work single handed on almost everything.
A trick I use to make assembly easier is using a couple pleces of threaded rod or bolts with the head cut off as guide pins. Makes it much easier to mount heavy flywheels and clutch plates.
Great Job guys. It is good to see that good ole JD back in service. Every time I go to the dealer to pick up a part for mine I look at the new ones and then look at the price tag and I like mine better all over again. They sure proud of those new ones! I am looking forward to seeing more of Ralph in the future. Take care.
I love seeing old vehicles restored. Tractors are really special. Jason of Cog Hill Farms was given a Ford 8n by his granddaddy to restore. His granddaddy is pushing 100 yrs old!!
We love Cog Hill Farms.
It’s funny you say you grew up with a John Deere 950 because I did as well. My dad bought his new in 84 and I got it when he passed. Soooo many memories on that thing. Keep up the good work!
Great episode!! If I was still teaching auto shop I'd recommend this as a must watch tutorial on engine building. Great information and you guys make it so relatable. "Get out in the shop and do something!" Great advice!!!!!
So awesome to see the ole Yanmar 2 cylinder alive again! Great job you two! Inspiring me to head out to my shop in the pouring rain and get something done. Cheers! Zip~
I have a Yanmar 2210BD which is physically a little bit larger, but uses the same engine and mechanicals as your 650. It is an amazing machine that works and works! I’m sure you’ll find yours will be just as impressive.
As a first time viewer of your channel I must say I enjoyed the video, have subscribed, and look forward to watching your previous videos. -Dave
Great job. You are good at what you do AND your wife is a doll.......and a good helper!!
That is awesome... Glad a memory could come to life for you. Congrats.
Ive got a 1987 JD 950 that just won"t die! It was built by Yanmar and I guess they knew what they were doing. Great video BTW!
That 650 is also a Yanmar. I have a Yanmar YM180D that is basically the same as the JD750.
Woo hoo!! It’s a runner!
Excellent work 🤙
So as it turned out, really fun watching both episodes, so now you know, we will watch anything with you two involved.
I was really surprised as i watched this Video, that you had this channel for nine years. I found it for the first time tonight , and enjoyed it so much. I applaud Aron for his life style change. any change like that does not come easy, and takes much self discipline. I look forward to future videos.
Congratulations Ya'll. Great job by both of you as usual. Nothing better than bringing something back to life and zero debt to boot. Nice!!!
I like the tractor build and great video keep up the good work God bless from GA and stay safe 🙏
A small tractor is a great thing to have, fun, fun.
Working on a small tractor makes it even more interesting, I’m an old farm boy and am thrilled to see both of you working on one.
Great job, I appreciate you guys working as a couple and making family friendly content. Great example of teamwork and commitment to building quality projects. I subscribed today because I try to support the kind of content I feel confident recommending to others.. Thank you for what you guys do!
Sure do thank you for this comment and the kind sentiment! We’re so thankful for the support ❤️
It would probably be good to replace the hydraulic oil and filters at this point as well. I don't know if yours has it but there should be a cleanable pickup filter that you should clean as well. It looks like the hydraulics are working smoothly so you could probably get away with not replacing the oil. Also check the oil in the front axle. Looking forward to seeing that move some dirt.
I love the tractor stuff and pretty much anything with a motor in it as well. What ever you two are working on, I'm in. I have quite a few older 60's and 70's garden tractors that I have rebuilt, and run around my acreage. The latest rescue is a 1973 Bradford PowerTrac with a 44 inch Bercomac snowblower on it and 16 HP Kohler cast-iron series. So whether it's boats, trucks, cars, skidoos...lol...tractors, I'll be watching. Cheers from Saskatchewan, Canada.
That funny sound is how that motor got the nickname "Jonny Popper".
These are great little tractors. I picked one up last fall. Just looking for a loader for it now.
This is a great build! You guys need to make a shirt with Arron saying “mm hmm” lol
The nob on the steering wheel that you said is so fun to use is called a suicide nob, it was put on old hotrods in the past.
I think those old Fury's were great cars, I had a 1968 Fury 3 4 door. About 5 weeks after it (a demo car), I pulled it into my carport and fine tuned it, I then loaded up my wife and young brother in law and took them back to Colorado where I grew up. I also took them up to top of Pikes Peak. The trip was from almost sea level (Orlando, FL) to 16,410 feet above, with no problem on regular gas, a 318 single carb.
Love y’all’s work🎉❤
Man you guys are so inspiring! I want to do the things you guys do but I keep going to work and paying others to fix my stuff. I just need to get out there and do it!
Heck yes you do!!! Find something broken and dig around the internet for good cheaper parts & fix it!!! Such a good feeling 😎 You got this 🤗
Place short lengths of tube ends on the rod bolts helps tremendously on line-up on crankshaft! First time I seen it done! I thought 'waste of time'. Now I recommend that!
Really enjoyed this tractor rebuild series. Definitely do more of these "off-type" series. Keep up the great work. Love watching you guys.
I've already watched the other tractor episode like 3 times already lol. Lovin the content guys keep up the great work 👏 👌 👍 🙌
Thank you so muuuuch!!!
Excellent couple of episodes. Really enjoyed watching Aaron rebuild with such skill, knowledge and care. Great that you didn't have to spend anymore to get the bucket working as well.
GREAT JOB RESTORING A BROKEN TRACTOR with so many hours of good life left in it. Thank you so much for filming and showing us all how important it is to TURN OFF THE TV and get into the garage!!! It is so important to learn all you can about so many things. Once its in your head no one can take it away from you, and you can take it any where.
I use to take a 8” piece of broom handle and grind it down to fit the pilot bearing. And wrapped masking tape to fit the clutch disk. Worked perfect for lining up the clutch
I love your excitement Emily, it's so visual!
Did you check the ring gap in the cylinders? I think that's a pretty important step before you put them on the pistons. If it's too tight, you can file the ends of the ring to get it right so they don't hit when they expand from the heat.
I wondered why no piston ring scrapers in the last episode?
Was that a hacksaw blade to clear the ring lands? Just a touch with the pointy bits and you're getting oil blow by on the rings like holes in a colander.
Yesterday was my first time watching your channel and now I’m HOOKED.
I guess it's too late to check it runs and it's done
"Nothing Runs Like A Deere."
Man I really enjoyed watching you two tearing down that tractor. I drove my family's John Deere Model A when I was six (1955). To this day I still enjoy hearing that distinctive sound of the John Deere. Keep up the great work you two and the best to you all.
That was FUN kids! J.D. family here too... Models 40,60 and an old B... loved them all. ;)
For the algorithmic machine of our RUclips Overlords
Y’all making me homesick for my old farming days. Had an old ‘65 Ford tractor that we used for everything and did our own maintenance. Enjoy Ralph!
I've got a 650 just like that! Minus the loader 😞 You are going to love it! Thanks for sharing some of the details of the rebuild, I have a couple of old two-cylinders that need rebuilding and appreciate the tips you shared as I've never done it before.
IT CACKLES SO NIIIICE...LOVED GETTING THINGS TO RUN GOOD!!! NEATO TRACTOR...!!! ❤👍🇺🇲💪🙋
Thank you loved the video!nothing better than the first fire up. Still remember the first engine I did. 1953 Jag xk 120. Bare block in car for thirty years. What a high when it ran.
I "inherented" an MTD 15.5 hp lawn tractor. Evidently someone hit something very solid. Bent one of the blades and sheared the flywheel key. Got it running, and the oil pan gasket leaks! Split the case today and test run tomorrow! Yee Haw!
Gotta love tractors I have a 1967 ih 2424 diesel tractor with front end loader that I rebuilt and a 1959 case 610b plus lots of impliment 2 14 plow, brushhog mower, 3 point backhoe, rear blade, 3 point sprayer sub soiler ,mf1 post hole auger they are tools I use alot.
I have a 1950 Ferguson TO20 that I got running about 5 years ago. I am still mowing fields with it. old gal runs great for a 73 year old Tractor.
Well done! Stumbled onto the 1st video of this. Tractor content videos are huge on YT.
Ah, another GTO owner! Bought my 05 brand new, it currently has 91,000 mi. and runs like it is still new. No problems at all.
It never gets old (for me) the first few breaths of life from a fresh rebuild, have been at it since the late 70s.
Thanks Flying sparks garage.
Central California watching.
Loved this small John Deere tractor engine rebuild, very cool. I noticed you didn't take your right angle air sander with a 100-120 grit sanding disc to the flywheel surface in a swirl pattern to do a "backyard resurface" where the clutch disc engages it. Wouldn't that have helped the clutch hold a little better for awhile? I just know I've seen a lot of very inexpensive engine rebuilds of all kinds where the flywheel on a go-kart all the way up to a big piece of machinery wasn't surface turned on a lathe but they went ahead and put a good swirl scratch pattern on the clutch mating area to take a lot of the smooth/polish out of the steel for more clutch grip.
Ralf looks great. See you all soon great job guys bloody awesome 👌
Great job on the John Deere!
You both were smiling from ear to ear and so was Ralph the tractor.
I worked for John Deere 40 years and like seeing them
brought back to life.
As the saying goes “Nothing Runs Like a Deere”.
I wish you luck sorting out the hydraulics and any other bugs that Ralph may have.
Enjoy your content and will keep watching!
Oh, the familiar sound of that two-cyl Yanmar click-klacking away. Brings me back to humid summer mornings, trying to mow most of the yard before the heat got bad. Or the rain came.
I grew up operating one of these as our main mower. Family bought it new in the 80's, and it still runs to this day with nothing besides seasonal maintenance and fluid/filter changes. Slow as hell but I'm sure it'll be around long after I'm gone. Thanks for bringing back memories of home, guys.
My Dad has a 650 just like yours and it sounds the same way. The motors sound funny cause it's a two cylinder but that's just how they sound it's normal. It has a 5 foot snow blower on the front. Awesome video!
I loved watching the two of you rebuild this old John Deere tractor! I do hope that you will find a space in your shop to keep Ralph indoors! I grew up with John Deere tractors as well!
Sounds like a great children’s book, Ralph The Tractor.
Started in the workforce at 21 as a JD Mechanic. Have worked on so many different tractors and equipment but am true to the bone JD fan!!! Love the boat, plane, cars, trucks... Love you guys! Thanks!!! A+!!! 👍🏻👍🏻😎😎😎
Yeah I used to mechanic at a kubota dealer myself. Love the Yanmar tractors
@@kd5inm Worked at a Kubota dealer for several years. Yanmar has got a great little engine! 👍👍
The sharp knocking sound you get on start up is actually the fuel igniting when the engine is started some diesels the ignition pressure in the cylinders can be over 1000 psi in the cylinder. Compression ignition style. Sounds good .with good maintenance it should give you some good service. 😊
Old tractors never die, they just need to be loved!
Clutch tool: Get a long bolt or threaded bar . . . Wrap tape on it for the crank bearing size then tape on for clutch plate size and use it to line up/assemble the clutch. Be careful with it as its only tape. . but wrapped tight it works fine.
Fill all filters if possible. So much better than cranking and cranking. The rest is exactly what I would do (I'm not perfect . . just my 10cents worth)
Sounds good, just remember she's got s/h crank and old pistons etc. . . so won't be sounding like a Rolls Royce . . I'd be soooooooo happy with that.
You saved a fortune there
Just subscribed and love the channel. To scrap gaskets if you don't have a carbide gasket scraper spend the money and get one you will thank yourself every time you use it. It is great for the stubborn stuck on stuff.
Super cool following the restoration of the John Deer tractor. Bravo!!!
Great video. Lovely tractor. My Son in law grew up with tractors. They still have Grandfathers Fordson 3 cylinder in the garage & rebuilt a bit like you have done.
Sweet little tractor! I've got a 450, a 318, and a 420. Love them Deere's!
You two are a true inspiration ! You treat each other so well and have so much fun together. I am inspired to do better...
Aaron ahah … love it dude…. Great stuff guys best wishes
