@@neverenoughtech my question is can Nakaimichi Engineer the Dragon Sound system that for an additional cost can an owner get two additional 9 pounds up firing speakers for more immersive sounds if they are willing to pay extra?
Great video mate, love your work. A big thing for me with all these videos from various streamers is that they only go so far with connectivity with the sounds systems and how they fit and talk with other technology that the consumer will be trying to use these soundbars with. Such as different brand tvs, gaming consoles like the ps5 and xbox series x and seeing how it actually works with them and are you able to utilise all features together. I'd be super happy to see you tag up with say a tv reviewer and see how these products work together to give a huge overall review of use case. Are you a gamer? Well these sound bar, tvs and gaming consuls are the best to really use all the features, in alot of other cases I have experienced or read online that why can't I get this to work properly with my TV and gaming console. Sounds not coming out of rear speakers when turning on the dolby atmos setting..... For a person like me that has spent a long time on the phone with the tv, av and console manufacturers, I can never get a clear answer because they all say talk to the other one.... seeing a clear picture of this sort of thing I think would definitely help alot of people for what ever your use case is. Love your work thank you for your videos.

Many Thanks for the video. Un-Biased review. Like it. Hope you could give me an advice. Talking about channels, your device yes, it can distribute audio to more channels, but the real "problem" is that you actually really need better blurays. Blurays are set at 7.1 audio. Everything else is artificially spread/adapted by your device.
Always enjoy your reviews. The one thing that annoys me about big name sound bars is they want you to match them to their brand of TV’s. I’ve heard many comments on how Samsung sound bars don’t play nice with LG or Sony TVs. The same goes with those brands also. Hopefully as part of new reviews that somehow could be addressed.
It's more than worth it I don't know if you got to see the launch at the trade show but there's at least a dozen videos out there. The Dragon: “I’m not a soundbar. I am sound, man! (Cough Cough) Sound, man!” Awesome video of the future these are the same ones I’m looking at and keeping track of. Interested in jbl 1300 but not sure if it will be as good/balanced as the 990b. Dragon is just overkill.
I’m with you … I’m curious how the reviews will pan out … sometimes tough to live up to crazy high expectations especially when you’re twice as expensive as very good systems.
OK, as far as the info you have on the JBL Bar 1300/1300X, all of it is correct. The JBL Bar 1300 X is the USA (or possibly North American) variant and it has the 12” wireless subwoofer. The JBL Bar 1300 is being sold elsewhere in the world, starting in Europe and has the 10” wireless sub. This has been discussed on AV enthusiasts forums (likely Reddit, too, but can’t quite remember). This explains the supposed conflicting info that you found. In addition, there has also been discussion regarding the upward channel count. Even though it’s six upward firing drivers, my understanding is that the two on each side of the front act as a single channel rather than as four channels. I’ve also read conflicting info as to whether it has 4K/120hz (I believe this was being discussed around the Bar 1000 which has been out longer in EU) with some actual owners swearing blind that it does not support while other actual owners swear blind that it does and that they have confirmed it using their gaming console. I also read an actual quote from JBL/Harman’s customer support (posted by an owner on a forum) saying that they were pleased to say that the JBL Bar 1000 also supports HDR10+ passthrough. This isn’t totally surprising given ownership by Samsung who are desperately trying to increase HDR10+ adoption. But I’m never one to complain about extra features on tech. ;) FWIW, another YT channel has done some non-scientific testing of the JBL Bar 1000 (which has the 10” sub) and found that it can reach 115db when measured via a smartphone app. In comparison, the Samsung Q990B maxed out at 101db. Again, this isn’t lab testing by any means but an interesting comparison in the same space with the same equipment. I was surprised, especially as we found the Q990b very loud in our space and could never get close to max levels. Daniel, would you please share the link to the JBL Bar 1300 on Amazon? I’ve searched via Amazon directly plus multiple search engines and can’t find a link to the product page for pre-order. I figure you can click straight through to the product page from the order you placed. It will be interesting to see if you get the 12” sub given that the product listed is the 1300 not the 1300X. I know this is unusual but I’d love the option to get the 1300 w/ the 10” sub (vs 1300X/12” sub) given our small space constraints. Finally, I’m not sure why you chose the comments that end up offending and alienating your female audience. Contrary to popular belief, enjoying good sound and tech reviews is not limited to one gender. We’re living in the 21st century now. Yeah, yeah, I can already hear the chides, “hey, can’t you take a joke” but a joke is only funny if everyone finds it so. Truth is, I’m sad because you have a good channel with informative content. You typically did deep for info to share. I don’t want to see you lose viewership.
Well I think you just provided maybe the most informative comment I’ve ever seen. Wish I could have seen it before the video but you have given me a list of issues to clarify for the review. My viewers are overwhelmingly men 35-55. Sometimes 100% based on analytics. I think the 21st century argument was interesting because we are free to pursue and watch what we want and yet overwhelmingly it's still almost all males watching my videos and it's easily observed by the comments. So it's not as if preference differences are somehow (completely or even mostly) coerced - there is a lot of interesting literature about preferences. Of course there are exceptions ... My male comment was more a jab at guys (middle aged) … not at women … more a 'woman are too good for my (our) channel' than the other way around (so self defacing was the aim). So no offense was intended and glad you watched. About the 1300 Amazon link … you know after I pre-ordered, the link went away which makes me a little suspicious that I’m getting it when it says it’s coming. It felt a little too good to be true when I pre-ordered.
@@neverenoughtech Thanks so much for your kind words - and for taking the time to respond. I’m glad you found the info helpful! I’ve been really going down the JBL Bar rabbit hole the last few weeks trying to learn everything I can, especially about the upcoming 1300/1300X. We actually tried the Q990b and it wasn’t a good fit for our space (well, and we had the dreaded L rear and sub disconnection issues). For some reason, dialogue was difficult to hear and it was almost like there was a hollowness to the mids in our space that tweaking the EQ or other settings just couldn’t fix. I know full well that our experience (while not unique) is also contrary to most other reviews but I’d say one of the most important things I’ve learned while researching soundbar systems the last 10 months or so, is that they are very room dependent. All that to say, looking for a Q990b alternative is what led me to research JBL’s options. Given the somewhat rocky reputation of the JBL 9.1’s mids, I was really happy to see that the driver configuration is improved on the new models. I’ve also heard directly from owners (via forums) of both the 9.1 and the Bar 1000 that the issue with the mids is no longer present. That’s encouraging! Given the little available info and reviews on the 1300/X thus far, I’ve also been learning what I can about the Bar 1000, figuring many of their specs, features, and even sound (to a degree at least) will be shared with the 1300 models. I’m super looking forward to hearing your review for the JBL Bar 1300 (or 1300X, depending on what you’re sent). Even though pre-orders aren’t available for Amazon now (disappointing that their link is currently gone!), I’m still hopeful that you’ll get it when they said you would. I’ve seen the Feb 19th release date by many, many reputable outlets/sites, so I think it’s fairly reliable. I suppose pre-orders could have been more popular than expected? Or maybe Amazon just wasn’t supposed to offer pre-orders yet. Hopefully it’s not stock/supply chain issues… Anyway, I’m very excited to hear your thoughts. It looks like it might be a great Q990b/c alternative. One other thing I’d be really interested to learn when you’re checking the 1300 out, does it have a version of Night Mode (or whatever they call it)? I thought I had read that the 9.1 had it but that the Bar 1000 (and possibly 1300 series) did not. I’m unsure if it’s been removed entirely or if it will be added back in as the JBL One app continues to mature. I suppose it’s not a dealbreaker given that we use an AppleTV for basically everything we watch and it has a form of night mode (Reduce Loud Sounds is their term), but I still hope JBL would have it it or add it on. We might not always use an ATV in the future and it feels like a pretty “standard” feature of higher end soundbar systems these days. I also appreciate your comments and openness re: gender and tech. I’m equally sad and confused - sad that it appears a lot of people are missing our on your content (if it’s true you don’t have any female viewers) and confused because this certainly isn’t the first of your videos that I’ve watched. Makes me wonder if the YT algorithm is entirely accurate on that info? Anyway, I love that you do a “deeper dive” into reviews, features, and your thoughts on gear. I like to “geek out” and find out all that I can about products and you often have great in-depth info. Keep it up, and know that you might have more female viewers than YT thinks you do. :)
I found more info on the specific drivers for the system. It does appear that there are 21 total PLUS additional passive radiators in the rear surrounds PLUS the sub driver. There are 15 in the main soundbar, plus 3 active drivers in each of the rear surrounds in addition to the passive drivers. With the sub, it’s 22 drivers total if you don’t count the passive radiators. Here is the total breakdown: • Soundbar transducer: 6x (46x90)mm racetrack drivers 5x 0.75” (20mm) tweeters 4x 2.75” (70mm) up-firing full-range drivers • Surround speaker transducer: (46x90)mm racetrack driver 0.75” (20mm) tweeter 2.75” (70mm) up-firing full-range driver 2x (48x69mm) rounded rectangle Passive Radiators (Because of how this is written, I’m not sure if this is 2 passive radiators in each of the surround speakers or one. Since the other drivers are listed describing a single surround, it’s unclear if it’s one passive radiator in each surround or two, as written. One might make more sense but it’s not in keeping with the other data where the info is describing the drivers in a single surround speaker.) The soundbar also appears to have WiFi 6 (802.11AX). Source: JBL Bar 1300 Official Product Manual (support.jbl.com/on/demandware.static/-/Sites-masterCatalog_Harman/en_US/v1670919874054/pdfs/JBL_HA_Bar%201300_OM_Global_V6_EN.pdf)
So I am as obsessed with the 1300x but I am a little deeper in the rabbit hole. So the 1300 is the uk/rest of the world model. The 1300x is exclusive to the us with the single difference being the 12" subwoofer. The wattage is the same but they are a different size so there's that. The two missing channels you can't find are on the sides of the bar so the side firing tweeters that finalize the 21 driver count and 11 channels. I'm super stoked about it can't wait for the review
@@neverenoughtech no sweat man I appreciate the content. It is kind of weird they locked up two channels when the speakers are charging/docked but we'll see how it sounds soon enough I guess. Good luck!
@@TheVdog12 Thanks for sharing more info. I’ve also been down a black hole of research on the JBL Bar 1300(X) and am very much looking forward to its release and subsequent reviews. I knew the info about the 1300 w/ the 10” sub vs the 1300X which is the USA (or possibly North American) variant with the 12” sub. However, I’ve not read anything about hidden side facing speakers which are covered when the rear surrounds are connected/charging. Is that what you were describing in your earlier comments? Do you have any more info on this? Forums posts, photos, specs, tech articles? I’d love to learn more. I know there are side firing speakers across the front of the soundbar with the other drivers, which is one of unique design features about this bar. AudioTribe’s YT channel has a tear down of the Bar 1000 which has a similar driver layout (just less of them than the 1300/X which you can compare directly via the JBL product videos which show the driver layout as also shown in NeverEnoughTech’s video) and you can easily see the angled drivers. You can check if out here if you’re interested: ruclips.net/video/7BKyvZh6iCI/видео.html. I listened to his audio comparison vs the Q990b and I have to say (even given the highly imperfect issues with sound comparisons via YT due to audio compression etc) that I preferred the JBL. I also saw a YT short only about 30 seconds long from a JBL retailer showing a “clear” demo version of the rear speakers. Interestingly, it looks like it might have four drivers on each one (two on the front, one forward and the other angled plus the main upfiring on top with what looks like an extra driver/passive radiator on top that almost looks like a mini sub type driver). I could easily be mistaken. But I’d like to hear what you think. Here’s the link: ruclips.net/user/shortsetGJ4-sLDxQ. Either way, you might enjoy it if you’re as desperate for any bit if new info on the 1300 as I am! I’ve watched it multiple times (and the same of the Bar 1000 tear down). I know, it’s sad how impatient I am for any crumb of new data on this soundbar system!!
@TheVdog12 I found more info regarding the specifications and numbers of drivers from JBL directly, if you’re interested. I’ve included it in a reply to my first comment on the video. Sorry I can’t link directly to it from here. But I also added a link to the official product manual in that comment.
I tend to do extensive research before I make a medium to large purchase because I obviously want to make sure I'm not only getting the best thing out there but also the closest to what I'm looking for in regards to finer details. I've watched quite a few tech reviewers on youtube, read just as many or more pages in tech/av forums and reddit, along with the more data driven websites like rtings. I find myself trusting your opinion over basically all others. Maybe something about the sassy/sarcastic additions to the reviews. At any rate, thank you for making these videos and for going in to the details that you do. Helps people like me out a lot and its very appreciated. Anyway I was all set to buy the Q990b since you (and others) have rated it over-all either the best or at least close to it as a soundbar surround system, until I saw this video and realized how close the release is for the new JBL, and then the new samsung after that. I'll definitely wait for your reviews on them before making the final decision. I'd love to consider the Dragon, too - or even a "legitimate" A/V surround system but alas, those are a little out of my price range for now. Thanks again.
My girlfriend picked the LG GX system instead. Big mistake. May have to return it as it resembles a tin can. We'll look at the Sony HT-A9 possibly. Thanks for the video, we enjoyed it !
Great work (as usual). The Q990C would be interesting, since the B is already a fan/reviewer favorite, but I think I'd be most interested in any new Sonos flagship. Don't tell my wife, but I'm looking to go atoms this year and upgrade the my Bose 700, Bass Module and skinny (and wimpy) little surrounds to something else. I love the Bose mostly, but I've had some dropouts and small issues that makes me want to go to Sonos, because Sonos has a history of just working very well and reliably.
"С" means Chromecast I guess. Finally they did it. Most amazing Samsung, which makes better Android phones and don't provide connection to their own bars.
Hello, I bought a HW-Q990b based on your excellent reviews to pair with a 77 A80j. I'm upgrading from a old Vizio 5.1 with satellite speakers. I'm having an issue with the volume swings of this thing. Dialogue is barely audible while sound effects are crazy loud. If I turn volume up to hear dialogue, next line will be too too loud and sound effects ear piercing. I've tried numerous modes and turned on and off adaptive and auto eq to no avail. Tried voice boost settings while keeping volume low to try and offset, but it didn't work. To be quite honest, standard mode with night mode turned on has been the best with leveling volume, but it completely neuters the subwoofer. What would you recommend I do? I don't want to have to return this thing or try to sell it at a loss. Any further settings you recommend I try? I wanted to go with the A9 but I have vaulted ceilings. My old toothpick Vizio actually did a better job at volume leveling than this behemoth. It didn't even have the number of speakers or adjustments possible. Please help! Thank you.
yikes, sorry to hear about that. I probably have dealt with what you're unhappy with but to a milder degree. Yes night mode basically turns off the woofer. From what you are saying it seems like the product may not be for you unfortunately ... perhaps stick on the sound mode (can't remember the exact name) that gives you access to more EQ bands and play with that perhaps boost the mids lower the highs a bit ... if you are seeking a replacement you might consider a slightly more domesticated animal like the Arc or Bose (though bose is buggier) ... I think you could try one of them out and return if it doesn't work for you. If you have vaulted ceilings - then all these higher end bars will suffer to some degree on precision so its not as if A9 has a special problem. It will probably sound better than you think. COntradicting myself I also wonder if you had the Q990B in a more traiditonal room whether you would have the same problems to the same degree ... in which case it may be the room is challenging acoustically for the more bombastic type systems
@@neverenoughtech I appreciate the response. That is disappointing that Samsung doesn't have a way to reduce dynamic range on their soundbars without crippling the subwoofer. Wild swings in volume when dialogue is too quiet but things like explosions, gunshots, etc are uncomfortably too loud.
Sonos could be up there. Heard rumours of an Arc V2 in May, then their new Omni directional rears in September/October which could put them back in as a contender. If Sennheiser release rears then that would also be one to watch out for, otherwise I'd say pretty much spot on with these three, although you could buy the 990C and 1300 together and still have change left over than buying the Dragon 😂
My question is will Nakaimichi dragon get an update that you can purchase 2 additional Rare up firing speakers to get a more immersive sound? It can be an option for those willing to spend more like Sonos owners? Plus as a owner of 2 previous 9.2.4 SSE, I already ready for 4 speaker stands for the surround speakers! Now if you can turn on each of the subwoofer independently if shouldn't be difficult to control 4 surround speakers? My question how many channels would that make it? The remote is very important in the dragon!!!
I like the thought but I really doubt they would support in this version. Could see some kind of 5k version in the future where they add … probably would need updated hardware.
I’m here in oz trawling the net for the best bar to buy (kinda holding out for the dragon) In Australia 1x Sonos arc. $1499 2 x era 300 $1498 2 x gen 3 subs $2198 = $5196 With these sums the dragon doesn’t seem that ridiculous. On paper Atleast. Just my thoughts
I don’t know if you wanna shout shell out for it but a dragon versus the 9.1 system from Nakamichi would be an awesome video. Since one system has dedicated surround speakers, and the other one has virtual surround, it would be cool to see if it’s worth the upgrade price.
I've had a Q950T since release but I'm not entirely satisfied due to the lack of calibration function, so I wanted to upgrade to Q990B because 990C has too few innovations, but when I saw the nakamichi dragon I knew what I wanted to buy even if it costs more than three times as much. Unfortunately...Unfortunately not available in Europe...a shame
@NeverEnoughTech please give us a review! I'm deciding if I want to buy it. Can you specifically let's us know if the sound stage is wide. Reason I ask is I have a 77" oled and the smaller main bar without the surrounds visually looks small in front of it. Kinda mentally screws with me because it feels like the sound on my 9.1 jbl is just coming from the center of the TV. Vs. Giving a wider sound stage.

Auditioned the 990C, and to my ears, that bar is utter trash. There’s little to no bass response, and the bar itself is WAY too bright of a sound signature for movies. It’s performance is so overhyped in just about every video I almost feel like Samsung is paying these reviewers to give it praises.

But I’m never one to complain about extra features on tech. ;)
FWIW, another YT channel has done some non-scientific testing of the JBL Bar 1000 (which has the 10” sub) and found that it can reach 115db when measured via a smartphone app.
Here is the total breakdown:
• Soundbar transducer:
6x (46x90)mm racetrack drivers
5x 0.75” (20mm) tweeters
4x 2.75” (70mm) up-firing full-range drivers
• Surround speaker transducer:
(46x90)mm racetrack driver
0.75” (20mm) tweeter
2.75” (70mm) up-firing full-range driver
2x (48x69mm) rounded rectangle Passive Radiators (Because of how this is written, I’m not sure if this is 2 passive radiators in each of the surround speakers or one. Since the other drivers are listed describing a single surround, it’s unclear if it’s one passive radiator in each surround or two, as written. One might make more sense but it’s not in keeping with the other data where the info is describing the drivers in a single surround speaker.)
The soundbar also appears to have WiFi 6 (802.11AX).

I have q990b, my room is 14' x 14' with 9' ceiling, all plaster. Is the dragon too much for my room size?
So I am as obsessed with the 1300x but I am a little deeper in the rabbit hole. So the 1300 is the uk/rest of the world model. The 1300x is exclusive to the us with the single difference being the 12" subwoofer. The wattage is the same but they are a different size so there's that. The two missing channels you can't find are on the sides of the bar so the side firing tweeters that finalize the 21 driver count and 11 channels. I'm super stoked about it can't wait for the review
I appreciate the clarifications!
You do realize that the Samsung 990C will retail for less than the 990B
@@MrBjorn6 Have your heard what the MSRP is supposed to be? That would be great if the price is lower. :)

For good movie use, proper surround, what do you recommend, the 990B or the 1300X ?

22 reproduktorov je spolu so SF
Great work (as usual). The Q990C would be interesting, since the B is already a fan/reviewer favorite, but I think I'd be most interested in any new Sonos flagship. Don't tell my wife, but I'm looking to go atoms this year and upgrade the my Bose 700, Bass Module and skinny (and wimpy) little surrounds to something else. I love the Bose mostly, but I've had some dropouts and small issues that makes me want to go to Sonos, because Sonos has a history of just working very well and reliably.
I have over 40 Sonos products. They work quite well
"С" means Chromecast I guess. Finally they did it. Most amazing Samsung, which makes better Android phones and don't provide connection to their own bars.
Great video as usual.
@@neverenoughtech surely an environmental problem in your living room...
Had Q990b and now dragon. its a huge difference in power, clarity and detail.
It should be with the price and R&D difference!

This is all true … Though I tend to favor the products that bother to announce themselves. I’m not opposed to amendment videos however
@@neverenoughtech Look up Sonos news today on the verge link. Era 100 and 300 new speakers incoming.
I’m here in oz trawling the net for the best bar to buy (kinda holding out for the dragon)
In Australia
1x Sonos arc. $1499
2 x era 300 $1498
2 x gen 3 subs $2198
= $5196
With these sums the dragon doesn’t seem that ridiculous.
The 9.1 has real (detachable) surrounds … the Ambeos I think are better examples of bars trying to virtualize … I think the dragon crushes all of ‘em.
Can't wait for your dragon review.
Here ya go … ruclips.net/video/aGGxA2xtDk8/видео.html
I've had a Q950T since release but I'm not entirely satisfied due to the lack of calibration function, so I wanted to upgrade to Q990B because 990C has too few innovations, but when I saw the nakamichi dragon I knew what I wanted to buy even if it costs more than three times as much.
Unfortunately...Unfortunately not available in Europe...a shame
Supposedly behind the detachable speakers are side firing tweeters and the bar will come with caps to cover them. I could be wrong though.
yup ... very sneaky - and there are two passive radiators on each surround firing up and down. Got the X in front of me right now
@NeverEnoughTech please give us a review!
