"Blinded by Light" is my favorite Final Fantasy battle theme

- Regardless of what people say about Final Fantasy 13, Blinded by Light really shifts the way we perceive and resonate with final fantasy battle themes. Final fantasy has a long history of stellar battle themes and in the case of Blinded by Light we have this fun and almost playful sound quality. It closes in on jazz in a lot of ways, weirdly, too. Which I find immensely satisfying.

Final Fantasy XIII is a role-playing video game developed and published by Square Enix for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles and later for Windows in 2014. Released in Japan in December 2009 and international in March 2010, it is the thirteenth title in the mainline Final Fantasy series. The game includes fast-paced combat, a new system for the series for determining which abilities are developed for the characters called "Crystarium", and a customizable "Paradigm" system to control which abilities are used by the characters. Final Fantasy XIII includes elements from the previous games in the series, such as summoned monsters, chocobos, and airships.
The game takes place in the fictional floating world of Cocoon, whose government, the Sanctum, is ordering a purge of civilians who have supposedly come into contact with Pulse, the much-feared world below. The former soldier Lightning begins her fight against the government in order to save her sister who has been branded as an unwilling servant to a god-like being from Pulse, making her an enemy of Cocoon. Lightning is soon joined by a band of allies, and together the group also become marked by the same Pulse creature. They rally against the Sanctum while trying to discover their assigned task and whether they can avoid being turned into monsters or crystals at the completion.
Development began in 2004, and the game was first announced at Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) 2006. Final Fantasy XIII is the flagship title of the Fabula Nova Crystallis collection of Final Fantasy games and is the first game to use Square Enix's Crystal Tools engine. Final Fantasy XIII was critically acclaimed in Japan and received mostly positive reviews from Western video game publications, which praised the game's graphics, presentation, and battle system. The game’s linearity received a more mixed reception from some critics. Selling 1.7 million copies in Japan in 2009, Final Fantasy XIII became the fastest-selling title in the history of the series. As of 2017, the game has sold over 7 million copies worldwide on consoles. The Windows version has sold over 746,000 copies according to SteamSpy. A sequel, titled Final Fantasy XIII-2, was released in December 2011 in Japan and in February 2012 in North America and PAL regions. A second sequel, titled Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, which concludes Lightning's story and the Final Fantasy XIII series, was released in November 2013 in Japan and in February 2014 in North America and PAL regions. As of September 2014, Final Fantasy XIII series was widely successful and has shipped over 11 million copies worldwide.
The game was added to Xbox One backward compatibility in November 2018 along with its sequels. It is also Xbox One X Enhanced allowing it to run at a higher resolution.

It’s interesting because the composer for FFXIII, Masashi Hamauzu, was born into a musical family (one of his parents was an opera singer) and was classically trained. His own music is partially inspired by the French “impressionist” composers such as Debussy and Ravel. FFXIII and it’s sequels may not be considered the best games in the entire franchise, but the music is amazing.
I can definitely hear the impressionist influences in his music. Even in his few compositions in FF7 Remake, I could hear his distinct style.
It's funny that Hamauzu is inspired by Debussy yet the franchise entry that I feel is most inspired by Debussy is FF12 which Hamauzu wasn't involved in.
Blinded by Light will FOREVER be one of my favorite FF battle themes!

Whole FF7 OST is worth checking tho.
FF13….. i know a lot of people didn’t like this game…. BUT I LOVED IT, despite it’s obvious flaws. But the OST ISNT ONE OF THEM!! And this battle theme SLAPS!!

its OK with amasing moments. overall like 8.2/10. So its not BAD it never was, final fantasy just has huge expectations.
13-2 its the best one, simple because the story is bit more palatable.(8.6/10).
Its much better than 15 which was just a mess, and i would recommend 13 for all who want more final fantasy.
also music is Great, but best songs are in 13-2 like gaius theme.
Also since whole games theme is like "god", the 13-2 does the whole GOD so good. I really like how they potray ETRO, might be best GOD potrayel i have seen. I also play alot of JRPG and there are lot of battles agains gods and demi-gods.

I loved the art, the character design was on point, and the story was going in cool directions. But it was let down by its pacing, and it deviating so far from the older battle styles threw a lot of people off.
Gapra Whitehood and Dust to Dust are the most relaxing themes too
I met Troy Baker last week. I had a brief moment to say someting and his characters ran through my mind, Booker DeWitt, Vincent Brooks, Joel Miller, Kanji Tatsumi, but I ended up making a 🙏 gesture and said 'Your Snow Villiers man, Final Fantasy XIII....' He put his hand on heart in response and bowed slightly with a 'Thank you'
The whole time I played Red Faction Guerrilla, I heard Snow xD (it is also Troy Baker)
FF13 has a banger ost, and Blinded By Light has been a favorite FF track of mine since the game came out over a decade ago

When the strings get to the higher octave I always have a sense of hope as if you’re uplifting your team to victory.
13's track "dust to dust" is imho one of the best pieces of the entire ff series both musically snd lyrics/meaning wise. So beautiful and yet so rarely mentioned when ff music is brought up

I think what makes it clear the kind of songs that grab you are a reflection of you as a person. The chorus of this song could be considered celebratory; reveling in contest & victory, which I think speaks to your propensity for optimism.

now I feel the urge to play this for like the fifth time
I was too young to appreciate the earlier final fantasies at the time but FF13 was the first one I bought on my own. This track floored me and I wanted to do every battle I could just to listen to it. I almost took up violin lessons solely to learn this one (poor family so never had the opportunity). That single violin soaring above the rest of the instruments would be so much fun to play! Rooftop Run from Sonic Unleashed has a similar feel to this.
This theme becomes something really special when you get to the last game. There are so many tracks with this motif and some other interpretations of the melody, it is a farewell letter to Lightning.
blinded by light is my favorite final fantasy battle theme for the violin alone. it gives me chills, it pumps me up, it makes me cry out of pure hope, its everything to me.
Im so happy Masashi Hamauzu is working on the FF7 remake trilogy. Already so many good tracks from him in Part 1
Yes, this one stands out a lot, it outlives the game easily. It would be right at home in octopath traveller.
FF13 series not only has an amazing soundtrack as a whole but the entire concept art is still hardly matched nowadays, the futuristic vision of that SE team is still impressing me despite the vast amount of good games of these days.
You gotta give Saber's Edge a shot, the build up is crazyyyy. It's my all time favorite Final Fantasy 13 soundtrack. Love these vids!

Oh my goodness, "Blinded by Light" is one of my favourite battle themes of all time, so I'm really glad to hear you talk about it!! I would love to hear you talk more about Final Fantasy songs, or even other Square Enix songs, like from Octopath/Octopath 2 or Kingdom Hearts!
It's nice to see some FF-XIII music on the channel . The music is great and its a shame to see it not be as praised as other entries due to the games mixed reception. It would be great if you'd check out other tracks from the series, especially Almighty Bhunivelze. That boss theme combines many different leitmotifs featured in the XIII trilogy and turns them up from 10 to 11.
I love FFXIII and I especially love their OSTs, this battle theme being one of my favs!
My top 3 Battle Themes are "XIII: Blinded by Light", "XIII-2: Paradigm Shift" and "SMTDD2: Battle for Survival", no particular order, they're all masterpieces to me lol.
This game has a gorgeous OST. It's one of my favourite soundtracks. I love two layers of strings, followed by the distorted guitar. One of my favourite battle themes ever. It always gives me the chills.
FFXIII OSTs are easily one of the best in the series, specially Blinded by Light, it just makes you feel like you're soaring through the skies and such.
Definitely one of the tracks I find myself humming whenever I remember it and stays on my mind the whole day. It just hits all the right notes.
Blinded by Light is definitely the best battle theme. I remember seeing the first trailer and hearing that music and thinking "I gotta play this game". What makes it so great too is that it takes key leitmotif of the game from Lightning's Theme and repurposes it.

It's weird, this song always makes me think of like Muzak for some reason but it's a banger of a battle theme at the same time. It's so peculiar and I really like it. As for FFXIII itself, I think it's weakness is that it's a good game in a series of great games.

I’m wasn’t sure what to expect, but this theme absolutely blew me away! I didn’t expect such a clear and pivotal focus on the violin as a main driving force for a theme, the lightness of the battle really just echoes through.

This takes me back to high school when I was waiting for the release of this game because it had the most beautiful graphics and world I'd ever seen. I intentionally missed the bus to skip school so I'd get it in the mail and proceeded to play it for 12 hrs straight lol. I've recently been rediscovering music from my childhood that I want to learn on the violin since I started learning it last month, (At 32 yrs old) so I'm really glad you posted this and reminded me of this track~

When I first heard Blinded by Light back in the day, it left an impression on me. It just stands out and is unforgettable. No other FF battle them has gotten me quite like this one. The violin goes HARD!

Masashi Hamauzu is a master of making very unique battle themes such as this one. I highly suggest fans of this piece to check out "Double Dimension Battle", a composition Hamauzu did for a game "The Legend of Legacy". It might very well be my favorite battle theme of all time. I also suggest checking out the battle themes he did for saga frontier 2, known as feldschlacht 1-4.

I love seeing people show FF13 love. I know it's a divisive came in the series, but i personally love it! The soundtrack for this one, and 13-2, are fantastic! Blunded by the Light is definitely my favorite FF theme, and that's saying a lot because there have been many great ones. Dust to Dust, in particular, is one of the greatest songs I've ever heard in a video game.

Final fantasy 13 is one of my favourite games of all time as well as 13-2 and lightning returns, I remember watching walk throughs for the game and telling myself when I get older and get a job this series is the first thing I’m buying and sure enough that’s exactly what I did. This game may be divisive and I can understand why people can dislike the game to each their own, however one thing that can’t be bad about the game is the soundtrack absolutely incredible 👌
The 13 series is my jam, definitely something I like to replay every now and again.

The song was so popular when the game came out. I remember the moment I played the game and heard it for the first time. It was so epic, I never got sick of it. I played it non-stop on guitar and piano. Such a fun and addicting song to play. I fully agree that it is one of the best battle themes ever.

I will always use Blinded by Light WHENVER possible in my DND Campaigns. Really, ANY of the FFXIII OST. It's absolutely enchanting to me, and such a treat. And intense, and full of so much life and character.
I have never had the honour of playing any of the FFXIII saga and yet this piece of music has been burned into my head since 2009.
As much as I don't like FXII's story and its gameplay, Blinded by Light, especially the haramonic violin drop, easily carries an otherwise daunting, random encounter battle beautifully🌸❤

Final Fantasy 13 holds a special place in my heart. It was my favorite game during my high-school years, it also showed me that video games could be a great story telling medium. It also happens to be the second game I played that has a soundtrack that I fell in love with. Dissidia Duodecim (a FF spinoff) came first.

I've never played a mainline FF game, but I heard this in Dissidia 012 the first time I heard it, and I just fell in love with the Violin (?) in the main section, with the electric guitar backing its one of my favorite battle tracks out there.

This battle theme definitely compliments the combat on XIII, which also has a rhythmic quality about it.
Underrated comment!!! There's nothing like listening to this theme at end game and post game high level gameplay with all the crazy enemies and abilities you can do with the paradigm shifts. It flows perfectly with the music! Especially post game Long Gui super boss.
XIII-3 has a spectacular remix called Crimson Blitz, if you haven't heard it.

Some people think Undertale's Hopes and Dreams sounds suspiciously similar to this and not gonna lie, I've gotten confused trying to remember the melody of one when I've heard the other recently... I don't necessarily believe it was intentional, but the resemblance is interesting!

Sometimes I'd toss the controller on the couch while my party was on auto-battle and just get up and break it down to the strings part XD
I love that Square used Blinded by Light as the motif in Lightning Returns.
People can debate the quality of the XIII trilogy forever, but the music is honestly some of the best in the series. And I know that's gonna sound like heresy to some given FF has Uematsu and Soken.
If you haven't already heard it, I highly recommend checking out Crimson Blitz from Lightning Returns FFXIII. It's one of the many battle themes in it and it might sound very familiar.
This is the one track I heard in the trailer PVs that made me want to play the game... and I did... and I loved it! Perfect game? Nah, not by a mile. But gawd that battle music... or FF13 music in general!
Ooohh Marco!!! You have to hear some of the orchestral pieces of the soundtrack that were performed by the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra!!! The orchestrations and writing in general are so gorgeous!!!

FFIX and FFX's battle themes are my faves, but this one was definitely catchy when I played FFXIII.

FF13-2's Full Speed Ahead is another great battle theme with a jazz feel to it similar to Torna's Battle! (which is either my favorite battle theme of all time or second after mechanical rhythm from Xenoblade Chronicles 1).
Marco, if you enjoy this theme so much, just wait till you hear Dust to Dust for the first time, whether it's in game or not.
I bet you'll have an eargasm when it gets to 'that' part of the theme. And within the context of the game, it's simply beautiful.

FF13 lightning returns was my first final fantasy for some reason, and I think I remember hearing this track in there and it has been stuck in my head for the past few years, mabye I should actually play finish that game...

FF13 is definitely worth finishing. Orphan's Theme Part 1 has amazing Latin lyrics that go hard. Really gives you the feeling like the fate of existence is in your hands.
