    Masashi Hamauzu was the composer for Dirge of Cerberus, World of Final Fantasy, and the Final Fantasy XIII trilogy. He also worked on Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy VII Remake. His personal touch stands out more in the Yuffie DLC because it contains some Dirge of Cerberus themes.

    • @nezkeys79

      Not to diminish anything about Masashi Hamauzu (he's great) but when you said "the composer" it implies you think he is the chief composer of the FF13 trilogy?
      FF13-2 was a collaboration (so was 13-3 and Hamauzu has less credits there), including Naoshi Mizuta, and Mitsuto Suzuki. Naoshi had the lions share of new tracks in 13-2 and wrote music for most of the main characters and scenarios (Serah, Noel, Caius etc)
      Hamauzu is mainly credited because of his music in FF13 being reused in 13-2 and 13-3. Mizuta also wrote most of the music in FF11. I think Nobuo contributed a lot to the base game, but everything past the base game was purely by Naoshi Mizuta, iirc

      I legitmately have not seen ANY FFXIII hate online at all in the past ~5 years. It's exclusively comments like yours that say the hate is unwarranted and the game is underrated. Well, after hating the game initially, and then seeing this new wave of positivity for it, I went back and revisited it.
      The game fucking sucks. The "soulless corridor simulator" critiques that people levied against the game on release still hold true. I finished the game on launch and disliked it, and will never go back to it.
      I'm not trying to yuck your yum here, I'm just trying to offer what I now view as the underrepresented viewpoint - that the game is *severely* flawed and the strongpoints of visuals, musical composition, and character design are all but wasted on that husk of a game with that borderline offensive storyline. As gimped as XV was with its story, XIII is somehow just as gimped. My love for games comes from character drama, storylines, and gameplay. XIII lacked all three. XIII did however have excellent visuals and music, as stated earlier. It just depends on what you prioritize as a gamer. I will say that building different rosters of teams and having to switch between them did get more fun in later boss fights, but we are talking about, like, 30+ hours in before the fights get fun, and the journey to get to those fights are never fun, it's just a slog of a straight line of constant nonstop encounters

      Personally, I probably prefer the FF7 battle theme most… Man with the Machine Gun from FF8 is always a joy… I don’t know if I’d say this is one of the best, necessarily, but then you have two or three that are amazing, then everything else is pretty great lol… Although, if you include boss battles, I’d say this fails off pretty sharply…. FFXs Battle Theme is fantastic on a melodic level, shifts and changes in style throughout, and even has a number of cool time signature changes. As a musician, I'm in awe of how they composed it. I also just re-listened to it because you had me doubting myself, but nope, it's still just as fantastic as I remember. It reminded me of how addicting it was to hear the battle theme and the little post battle jingle - up there with FF7's battle and jingle. I used to love FF9 and FF10 battles so much and I think it's largely down to their battle themes.

      I haven't owned Playstations up until the PS4, so i was more than happy when they announced FFXIII would be coming out for the X-Box 360, because up until that time, i had only played Final Fantasy Tactics Advance. Which i loved, dearly, it's still one of my fav games ever, but it wasn't a main entry to the series, of course. Then XIII came out and i barely made it six or seven hours into the game or so before i dropped it, because i couldn't stand it at all... i'll admit thought, the music is great, the graphics were, too, and i really like Lightning. I am glad though that my next foray into the series were XIV and VII Remake, they definitely salvaged my bad first experiences with the main series...

      @@BlakeAustin2011 Nah, 13 is bashed hard because it's a tragedy novel in ways that just don't mesh well as a videogame. If it was a book, it probably wouldn't feel as poignant as it does. Ultimately the gameplay and the story just don't mesh together particularly well, so the hallways feel like more of a chore. But frankly the comparison to 10 is good, and more than that, a good point can be made towards a lot of other FF titles! The problem is the presentation of the gameplay, mixed with a plot that's a downer for like 80% of the game, with a gameplay that's deceptively complex but doesn't open up to that control until way way way later into the game... ultimately it feels like a drag in several levels.
      I dunno, I love it and hate it at the same time. It's got potential, but it's got its interesting points.
      ...XIII-2? Lightning Returns? _No, silly, there was only one FF13 game._ q^q

      I dunno. I always found the music in FF13 to be a bit... repetitive. It seems like there were only 2 or 3 tracks they played at 3 or 4 tempos in 5 or 6 styles. his reaction 'oh, its already looped' is basically my reaction to most of the music unfortunately.

    • @MrInuhanyou123
      @MrInuhanyou123 Год назад +2

      @@BlakeAustin2011 my issue is that ff13s linearity is very poorly masked, not that it's linear.
      There are lots of things and side quests to do in FFX. You can go back to almost every area eventually and do something different there , you can customize your weapon and accessories with almost every status element in the game, the sphere grid allows for characters to take on any skill with some planning, there are secret summons out of the way of the main plot you can completely miss etc
      With ff13 it's almost the complete opposite. The crystarium is locked by story progression on a specific track, so you can't grind or decide anything specific, all moves are specific to the character via class even when you open up all the class types. Most of the game railroads you into not having your whole team available for team usage so your forced to play in the way the characters available dictate. There is not even an illusion of exploration as all the shops that would otherwise be in towns which also don't exist are confined to a menu in the save station, NPCs in general are otherwise completely non existent outside of like 1 area in the game and even then you cant directly talk with them. Even inside the shops all your doing is buying selling and breaking down generic scrap to funnel into getting your weapon to max damage rather than the freedom to customize your load out further.
      That leaves many people with the sense that all your doing is running from story cutscene to story cutscene with nothing in between. Even when granpulse opens up all your doing is hunting monsters.
      The surface level appearance of "linearity" may be there but how both games execute is completely different.

    Blinded by Light is the main battle theme, there are several battle themes but this one in particular is used for the vast majority of fights. The pacing of it is really well done with the intro being used to establish the fight and then once the violins come in you've gotten into the swing of things and your characters attacks are coming out. It is a little on the repetitive side, due to how short it is. "Blinded by Light" is utilized as battle music a lot, but it's also the theme for the main character of the XIII trilogy, Lightning Farron. She's the second female lead of a main line FF title, the first being Terra from VI (technically Lightning's sort of the third if you played a female character in the FF mmo XI). But her theme is sorta' a reverse of Terra's theme, because it is used as battle music while Terra's theme was used a "World music", ie the music played when you're wandering around the world map.

And yeah 13 is super linear except for one big area near the end of the game. 13-2 was a nice sequel gameplay wise but wasn't really needed. It improves a quite a bit on what 13 did so most people seem to like it over 13 bc of that. Lightning Returns is 13-3 and was definitely not needed but just as 13-2 it's gameplay was another big step up and is super fun. This is a pretty good one, and thankfully so since it's the song you'll hear more than any other in FFXIII. I definitely think the game gets more hate than it deserves. I admit, for me it was hard coming off of FFXII, with it's exploration and freedom, into FFXIII's *very* linear style. But after focusing on what it was, rather than what it wasn't, I had a lot of fun with the game. I wouldn't rank it in my top FF games for sure, but I cannot say that I don't like it.
    There's definitely some great songs in the game, but I feel much more strongly about the soundtrack of it's sequel, FFXIII-2, which I feel is absolutely amazing. I can't speak much on Lightning Returns though, as I've never played it.

    FF 13 is actually a trilogy… 13, 13-2 and Lightning Returns is essentially 13-3… Originally 15 and type 0 or whatever were part of the 13 world or something too, I think, but things got shifted around a bunch…
    The 13 series is kinda weird… Some cool ideas, but not necessarily what fans wanted… They would be fine as their own game, but as a Final Fantasy? And then they did a weird thing that often lead to people auto attacking through fights, rather than strategising as much… I think the kinda formation job system helped mitigate that issue, but it wasn’t popular with many fans… 13-2 improved the town aspects, but damn that ending lol. People often say Lightning returns is much more fun as combat, but some felt insulted by the story… Some weren’t fans of Lightning and got annoyed about how much she got pushed for games lol… Oh well… It’s not that bad, but certainly has issues

  • @undeadMonk

    There's Final Fantasy XIII (I liked it! It was weird!), Final Fantasy XIII-2 (A direct sequel! It was really frickin' weird! I kinda liked it!), and Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII (Another direct sequel! It was really weird! I really liked it!)
    But I don't know if I could recommend them to anyone, despite how much I enjoyed them. As I said, they're weird - the first one's the most "grounded" (which I'm sure will come as a shock to anyone who's only played the first game) and it's probably the easiest to recommend. All the weirdness comes from typical Final Fantasy plot and storytelling stuff - I _still_ can't tell you what a L'cie and a Fal'cie are and what the differences between them might be despite that being what the game is about. It's one of those 'if everyone would stop speaking in vague allusions it'd be fine' kinda games, I think. 2 is just... strange. Bizarre plot, crazy visuals. Centred around, like... time and dimension travel? There's some cool stuff in there, but wow, I still only sort of get what happened in the middle. Lightning Returns was a fun experience for me, and I can honestly recommend trying it out to anyone. It's _also_ really weird, but there's no time travel (... I think?), so that helps.

    1. It's linear, don't even try to wander off the beaten path even when the game opens up, it's a waste of your time

      This is just outright wrong, some of the best battle content in an FF game is gained through exploration when the game opens up, and the battle system rewards picking your own attacks, if you take the time to learn what each attack does it gets very rewarding to use each in the right situation and to juggle bosses while staggered to achieve the 5 star rankings on each encounter.

    • @nekorion
      @nekorion Год назад

      @johnnyshins511 the game doesn't open up until post game. As an aside: Pulse isn't "opening up", you can functionally go where the game wants you to go or you can get your ass handed to you by stuff you have no business being near.
      Autobattle always selects an attack the enemy is weak if your character knows one, and if it doesn't, it cycles through attacks both magical and physical till it finds something effective or you can libra and force it, thus the actual attack doesn't matter outside of ultimate attacks like death/army of one/last resort, all of which are near end game anyways, which is why the job matters not the attack.

  • @Tarrot
    @Tarrot Год назад

    On 13: Pretty much everyone agrees that the graphics and sound are amazing for this game. The game is 13 years old and the graphics still hold up. On why it's divisive, it usually comes down to the battle system, how linear it comes off, and the story-telling. The first two are personal preference things, and the third, there's an in-game Encyclopedia which is basically required reading to understand the plot, as terms and certain storylines are not directly explained to the player. I like it but it's probably in the lower half of FF games for me.
    On Blinded By Light, it's mostly a battle theme. The main motif appears in other songs as well in 13, which is probably why it was chosen.
    For 13, there are 3 games in the series. There is 13, 13-2, and 13: Lightning Returns. 13-2 is, IMO, one of the best FF games there is, which was poisoned because of how many people didn't like 13, so it doesn't get the respect it deserves. 13: Lighting Returns is, while I don't want to say outright bad, probably the worst received main FF game there's been, and justified IMO, for a lot of the choices they made design wise.
    Also, when 13 came out, there were plans to have a bunch of games set in the same universe, the Fabula Nova Crystallis series, where they would share terminology but be independent games. Due to a ton of behind the scenes issues, Final Fantasy: Type 0 is the only game that was released in this series. Final Fantasy 15 when it started out in development was initially Final Fantasy 13: Versus, but got rebranded with how long it was taking to come out, and ended up not having the terminology or lore that the 13 series and Type 0 have.

      I know people don't like the linearity and how the story goes, but look at it from this perspective; the group is being hunted by their own government. They're fugitives on the run, they can't really go and explore every nook and cranny of every area and explore the entire world at their leisure (like in most FF games). I think people tend to forget that.

      @@Dimumouto Linearity is never a problem. The way it's HANDLED is everything. FF7r is very linear. And it does get complaints about it, but nowhere near on the level 13 does. FFX same thing. Linear progression is VERY common, but when you dress it right nobody cares. 13 didn't dress it right at all. It is linear and it FEELS linear. You aren't just effectively going down a corridor, you're literally going down a corridor. Even when it opens up it feels like a corridor, either because you've been trained to feel constrained or because there's nothing of interest in the expanded area. An improvement, but not a solution.
      Speaking of the corridors: the graphics. They're great. But thats a double edged blade because it highlights the really poor art design. Everything looks so bland. The only things that got care and attention were nonsense monsters. Which there's nothing wrong with nonsense monsters, every FF has em and they're great but... they can't be the only thing that got an ounce of fun put in em.
      Being pursued by the military could have been so cool. But it didn't feel like you were pursued by the military, because all you do is long jog to the next cutscene. Which happens to be in the direction you haven't been before always. Which is to say, if the military wasn't hunting you you would probably be doing the exact same thing anyways. Perhaps even with a modicum of wiggle room to get attached to this place you're supposed to want to save. But definitely don't.
      And yeah the combat is definitely not easy, especially if you take on some of the challenge fights. But it's not especially hard either. And the most important part is whether you found it fun. And some people absolutely did. Most didn't. Neither are wrong about that. It's an interface, mileage will always vary. For me I found it incredibly unsatisfying how matter of fact and pizzazzless it was. Why did my sentinels take less damage? Low art forcefields. Why do ravagers build stagger fast? Cuz the game said so. What kind of damage is this enemy weak to? Blue damage. The one to the left is weak to red damage. The next one has no weaknesses so pelt it with whatever food coloring you like. This is another example of poor art design btw.
