Let's be honest. What we saw in this video was a completely unfair comparison. He admitted he was willing to hit the hill a lot harder with his own truck than with the new Dodge. Good video and beautiful Chevy. If you have plenty of power and a manual trans, a higher gear (like 2nd) and low to medium throttle are the best way to forge through deeper snow. It helps distribute torque more evenly to all wheels when you don't have locking differentials. Granny gear is better for climbing or descending steep, rough hills. 🙂
Great job getting through. I'd like to see the TRX with those tires on it and see the difference. Old tech vs new tech, basically boils down to the right tool for the right situation. Weight and traction vs speed and power. Good job boys.
I love your old truck and it is obvious you do too. When it comes to snow though more weight is better generally. If you throw a pickup box full of wood on old green she would have walked right up that hill first time. Biggest issue for the dodge was those cooper SSTs even with a shorter tire that dodge may have made it. One more thing is if you bust the trail first with one truck (in snow) the next one has a better chance. The reverse holds true in mud.
When soccer moms became a big part of the truck/SUV 4wd market because they wanted to sit as high as anyone else on the road while driving a Cadillac car......that's when 4wds lost their true purpose. This video proves it again.
@@thomasmartini7879 You haven't done much 4wd in snow with hills or mountains then, more weight is the last thing you want, nothing in general about it. Common knowledge: gravity and traction is a bigger SOB with more weight.
@@decibelinterference2033 Yeah, that'd be a big fat negatory on that one driver. There's no common knowledge about it, @thomas is correct. How are you supposed to get the tires to grip if they're just floating/spinning in the snow? Unless they're paddle wheels...you need traction & without enough weight, you won't get enough traction. Throughout MANY of our winters spent up in Lake Tahoe...if my empty Peterbilt 10 wheel dump truck (w/full rear locker axles) starts spinning or losing traction in the snow...we either throw a couple fat scoops of snow in the bed or (if height permissive) I'll just raise the bed up so all the weight is concentrated over/on top of the axles...& she'll walk on out every time. Not going to debate, just know what works/makes traction for me & that's downforce personified, resulting from the extra weight. However, as he said...that's NOT so much the case when it comes to deep mud.
My 98 long bed k1500 Silverado can go anywhere and haul anything... I've had it for a long time and get sticker shock when I look at the new trucks that can't do what I can do.
I have countless memories wheeling my old square body with buddies when we were growing up. They are great 4x4 trucks. We got ourselves in all kinds of nasty situations. And got out as well.
That was cool ....now hopefully you guys can get a 4-5” fresh snow cover only, everything to freeze over and than try it again with Big Green breaking the trail. A+++
Now, for the sake of a fair test and comparison, you have to find a place on open space in the deep snow where the old pickup will get stuck, and then try to drive there in a new pickup. Because as I understand the only thing holding you back is not even its weight, but its width, so as not to damage it.
Drove the same truck as your “big green” hunting for years in Canada’s North. Always had “pizza cutters” on ( skinny tires with good grip) and it would go amazing places. Those tires are too wide for good winter driving, especially on slick pavement.
I don’t care how high you lift it ,the axles and the pumpkin are going to limit what and where you go because you will be pushing snow or mud with them!
I’ve been a big green fan ever since tfl truck was looking to buy big green and rebuild it. It would be cool to have green vs every truck you review 👍🏽
I had a 79 suburban 3/4 ton with 4” of lift, 35” mud terrains, 4.56 gears, locker in rear and front diff , 4 speed and a transplanted 327 that pushed 400hp. By far the best piece of heavy iron I ever had. There was no stopping it
We're paying for over engineering and things that break easily... I had exactly the same model as big green even in green slightly darker with no four-wheel drive but a 1969 327 in it what an awesome vehicle I should never have sold it
Nice. i like both trucks and have a 1980 K10 myself. I've also lived all my 65 years in New Hampshire and I'm not really sure that the RAM couldn't have made the hill with the same tires but also with the second run at it with more speed and not as much concern about hitting the trees like you did with Big Green. In the end though, I would have done the very same thing. :o)

Big fan of Big Green!
So proud of big Green!😁
Thats awesome. Good for you. The old 4x4's still rule!
Sometimes the 60k dollar price difference, and ownership makes the difference between how hard you push the vehicle.
Yeah. You're not pushing a 100k truck like you will a 20k truck, especially if you have the title to the 20k truck.
I have the exact same truck!! Love my 85 chevy!
Rather have the old simple Chevy. True truck.
My 98 long bed k1500 Silverado can go anywhere and haul anything... I've had it for a long time and get sticker shock when I look at the new trucks that can't do what I can do.
Thanks for an awesome review of a basic truck. Keep'em coming TK!!
A+++
Sweet truck! Sheer coolness....chevy for the win every time
Big Green prevails!
Awesome video!
They don't make trucks like big green no more ! Nice truck guy luv it ! 👍
Every time I went to play in the snow in my 89 blazer . I pulled out some many different trucks out there . Just unstoppable!
That Chevy is beautiful. My dad has had a few square bodies he put through the ringer 😂 I’d love to have one but they are so rare now.
Now, for the sake of a fair test and comparison, you have to find a place on open space in the deep snow where the old pickup will get stuck, and then try to drive there in a new pickup. Because as I understand the only thing holding you back is not even its weight, but its width, so as not to damage it.
The RAM would have made it if it had pre-existing tracks as well like the Chevy had.
I've been there done that and loved that last run ! You gave her hell just like you're supposed to .
The right tire is a big advantage as well. , loved your video
Drove the same truck as your “big green” hunting for years in Canada’s North. Always had “pizza cutters” on ( skinny tires with good grip) and it would go amazing places. Those tires are too wide for good winter driving, especially on slick pavement.
Hard to beat a good ol square body Chevy. I sure miss mine. Nice truck sir.
Green truck is impressive. Old school, simple straightforward. Love it.
To compare them accurately, you need to have identical tires on both.
Yes, and also the Ram made tracks for the Chevy to make it up as well. Ram most likely would have on another attempt too.
Awesome. Love older trucks!
Yeah that big green is cool, simple and less stuff within reason definitely the way. Nice one
STT PRO'S are MT tires, TRX has Hybrid tires inbetween aggesive All Terrains and MT tires.
We used to call that extra low gear a "bull low". I love the Chevy trucks from that era.
I don’t care how high you lift it ,the axles and the pumpkin are going to limit what and where you go because you will be pushing snow or mud with them!
That's what I call having fun!!
Big green looks amazing 🤩
Ya can't beat good old fashion simplicity and reliability
That was AWESOME!!! :D Just think how much easier it would've been with lockers :O
Oh yeah Big Green is Kick ass! I would never thought that TRX was so heavy?! Great video Thanks 🤠
I’ve been a big green fan ever since tfl truck was looking to buy big green and rebuild it. It would be cool to have green vs every truck you review 👍🏽
Throw a Detroit locker in the front and a true trac in the rear
I am not a Chevy fan but I would drive that truck. Nice job big green.
@@Tony-bg6ql Lmao yeah right
Now put 1000 lbs in the back and try it again. Had a k30 with s bale bed. With two 1800lb round bales on the back it was unstoppable.
100% correct. Need that weight over the rear axle!
I just want to be able to buy a single cab again
Old chevys never disappoint, can’t beat old 70’s and 80’s trucks for off road in general
I knew big green would do it! I just knew it! Great job guys!
I had a 79 suburban 3/4 ton with 4” of lift, 35” mud terrains, 4.56 gears, locker in rear and front diff , 4 speed and a transplanted 327 that pushed 400hp. By far the best piece of heavy iron I ever had. There was no stopping it
That is a very clean example of an 85 square body.
I think with lunchbox lockers and a camed 454 it would close the gap for about $4k
You gotta send it!
As a fellow nh man, you got to send it, and you call that a hill?
NH lifetime 68 year old man here! Fun video! In 86 I bought my first brand new vehicle which was also my first truck. A new F150 regular cab with manual 4 speed with 1st gear granny. It was my daily driver and I Drove that truck through snow while hunting on tote roads and everywhere else. In 95 I bought a new one but I didn’t trade in the old 86. I put new tires, gas tank, and ball joints on it and gave it to my Dad! He had it for years. I still miss that ole truck with a ton of memories attached to it. Fast forward to 2020 after a number of other trucks, I bought my first Ram. I just put a set of Falcon AT3W tires on my 2020 Ram Bighorn 4X4 crew cab and they are awesome. I love the truck and still hunt, I just wish I still had the physical agility I had 37 years ago when I bought that 86. I was adventurous back then lol The new Ram, now 3 years old next month will likely last me my lifetime cuz I’m loving it and the prices of trucks now is crazy! Again, fun video!!
I bought a 78 K/10 Scottsdale that I am slowly going through and rebuilding, 383/TH400. The new stuff just can't compare long term! LOVE IT!!
