I grew up in the village of Tuscarawas. We just all called it Tusky. Gnadenhutten is about 4-5 miles away and all us locals just shorten it to Gnaden. Yep. Grew up in the village of Tuscarawas near the Tuscarawas River in Tuscarawas County!😂
I'm from Cleveland and never heard of that Gn city. I had to look it up. And I would have mispronounced it! G's are usually silent before a consonant. 😂 Elyria... Eh leer ee ah. Here's a few to add to the list.. Solon. Chardon. Xenia. Ghent. Lima. Milan. 😂
I've seen the first one in writing but I only knew it as a river, I didn't realize it was a city. Should have. I've seen the second one too, I just have no idea where or when. I don't know why it surprised me that they had trouble with Chillicothe. Would have been funny if you threw Cuyahoga at them. I don't think there are any tricky pronunciations down in this little corner, biggest tissue we run into is people put in too many t's and not enough n's.
Milan (me-land), Vienna Vy-enna), Beallsville (Bells-ville), Bellaire (Blare), are also fun. But don't get me started on towns in Washington State...they're just as silly (Puyallup) or Oregon (Willamette).
I live near Cleveland, my friend lives near Columbus. She made fun of me the first time I mentioned the Olentangy River. I pronounced it “oh lin tang ee”. Needless to say, I have prounced it correctly ever since.😉
Basically, it was places that had Indian or French names. Then, in the late 18th century and into the early 19th century, settlers from New England, who had odd accents to begin with and were not overly educated, tried to pronounce these places the best they could. That and they actually founded towns and gave them French names because they were veterans of the Revolutionary War and liked the French... but again, they didn't know how to pronounce them correctly. Later, German immigrants came and messed-up the pronunciations even worse.
I'm originally from Cleveland and now live in the Chicago area. In Ohio, it's "Meh dye nah". In Illinois, it's spelled Medinah and pronounced "Meh dee nah".

Might have been interesting if they had included Maumee. I know of at least 2 people who pronounced it wrong or emphasized the wrong syllable. And a third person who heard me say it and just thought it sounded funny.
I live in Geauga county! But California native, before I knew how to pronounce it I pronounced it "gay-ooh-gah" lmao it's "gee-ah-gah"
I was expecting to see Mantua in this video. “Manny way”.
Toledo, Lima, Elida and Wapakoneta are also fun to hear people mispronounce. 😉
You guys did pretty good. Just gotta remember Native Americans has a huge impact on names and places here in Ohio and half the US.
I know of nobody who says "El ear yuh". Even on local TV, it is "El ear ee ah".
It's great how Russia, Versailles, and Houston (How-ston) are all within like 25 miles of each other.
With Piqua and Wapakoneta not far away.
Tuss-kuh-ROAR-uss
Galluh-puh-LISS
And no CUYAHOGA?!
Also Mantua (MANna-way) and Mentor (MENNer)
I’m from Piqua and now live near Bellefontaine and my dad lives in Russia 😂
Should have thrown one of the Cuyahoga towns in there... Cuyahoga Falls, Cuyahoga Heights...
I didn't even know about Russia, OH lol
But try Wooster!
Or try Bucyrus
I live in Lima, Oh, no one here says behl FOWN tuhn. We all say bell fountain lol.
Grew up in Steubenville, Ohio. Lots of unusual names to the towns. A lot of the names are Native American words
They should have included Mantua.

I've lived in Ohio my entire life and hadn't heard of the first 2 ever! Lol
Try Medina (meh DIE nuh). GPS says "meh DEE nuh" like "Funky Cold Medina".
Bellefontaine is misspelled.
Lmao, I'm from Ohio and didn't know how to pronounce the first two 😂
You spelled one wrong in the capital lettered actual town names.....It's not Bellafontaine, it's Bellefontaine. The 5th letter is an E, not an A.
Probably pronounced it wrong (according to those who've lived there, anyway)
Scioto. Nuff’ said…
Sigh-Oh-Toe.😂
Love to hear them pronounce Ravenna, Dalton, Massillon, and Cadiz.
Or Mantua.
Don’t think any of those are hard for anyone in the country.
Dalton gets everyone
Tuscarawas isn't pronounced tuss-kuh-RAW-wuss, it's pronounced tuss-kuh-RAW-russ. You have to pronounce the r that isn't there.
Depends on where in Ohio you are, I guess. Where I am (Stark County) I mostly hear it called tus-kah-RAW-wuss or tus-kah-RAW-wuhz.
Even the locals won't tell me how to say Tuscawaras. They told me it's Tusc and not to worry.
Bucyrus..Wapakoneta, Xenia,
Let's throw Wauseon in there.
Love how youtube is trying to make sense of the names by saying "translate to english" under them...but then it all just stays the same lol
I used to live in Xenia! 😂
This needed to include Lima and Vienna. 😆 Or Olentangy. 😁
And Wapakoneta
@@ViperLemondemon Yes! They never use Wapak in these!
And Celina

Try Cuyahoga County...lol
If it doesn’t include a hog, it’s wrong! 🤣
@@dsephotos not a hog, a hoe!
There are two ways locals pronounce Cuyahoga. Just don’t confuse it with Cayuga which is in New York.
Good try u guys. Ohio has wayyyyy more funny places.
As a guy from Chillicothe they did good lol
People often pronounce Medina wrong.
I'm originally from Cleveland and now live in the Chicago area.
In Ohio, it's "Meh dye nah".
In Illinois, it's spelled Medinah and pronounced "Meh dee nah".

Fun fact, Elyria is where the twisted tea incident occurred
I live in 1 of those cities. A lot of those of Native American names.
How could you have done this video and left off NEWARK (Nerk), Ohio?
They forgot xenia 😆
Imagine living here 🤣.
Elyria in the building 😎💪🏾 My hometown
Forgot Ashtabula!
It’s Bellefontaine and is pronounced bell-fountain.
I'm from gnadenhutten and I can't even really say it in a quick sentence
Might have been interesting if they had included Maumee. I know of at least 2 people who pronounced it wrong or emphasized the wrong syllable. And a third person who heard me say it and just thought it sounded funny.
Try Florida names. LOL
I'm from Cleveland i knew most of them. 😂
Mantua, Padua
No mantua?
G awe ga county or G awe ga lake
Make them do vandallia. I once heard someone pronounce it van da lee ah and it stuck. lol
I usually say Van-day-lee uh.
I'm from Cleveland. We mess up everything!😂
Im from northern ohio and i dont know how to pronounce some of this cities lol
Berlin, OH is not pronounced like the city in Germany. Emphasis on the first syllable.
Who else lives in Tuscarawas?
Welcome to the buckeye state
Add Berea
Oh stop! I was born & raised in Ohio & haven't heard of some of these, so being from CA & mispronouncing some of them is not big deal.
As an Ohioan, just no to half of these.
Stop it. People born and raised in Ohio don't know how to pronounce these names
I know how to pronounce Roo-she
And Versailles
And Bellfoutaine
