You're confused. Police don't enforce or investigate law when it comes to Police. They only investigate and enforce policy. Hence why they don't care about or know the law, but will fold whenever you mention policy and ask for a supervisor. You'll never file a complaint and get an IA review that says an officer violated the law, just policy and procedure.
I see people every day who get why transparency and accountability are important, and how simple it is for the public to record police encounters. And then I see LEOs with confusion, disdain and disregard. How is there so little overlap?
A severe lack of empathy. They're Type A personalities. Narcissists. Psychopaths. Sociopaths. With badges. Their actions are only for their sick kicks. Law enforcement is based on the more you catch the higher you climb in rank. Which gives incentive to act horribly and be protected.
To all auditors: Keep fighting the good fight! Until these public servants realize integrity and accountability are values not to be feared, you are needed. Thank you for your service.
Still haven't heard of a cop being shot by an auditor, or anyone else peacefully observing while recording. The fact that they feel threatened by a person when they are recording vs when they are just watching tells you what you need to know. Every one of these idiots suddenly worries about their safety, feels the need to control where you are, limit where and what you can record, whether or not you're allowed to be armed in their presence, and suddenly forget their name and badge number. Thr antagonism you gain simply from recording is obvious, blatant and it's going to bite them in the ass.
But keep in mind, the chief will tell you that what we just saw didn't occur. If you sat down with him and went over it sentence by sentence, he'd say that you misunderstood. NOTHING will change.

Police need to learn their place. These two presumably never knew it. Seems we, the people, have to do all of the training in that regard. I'm not certain where that process ends but hopefully reasonable conversations will prevail before this dynamic escalates too far.
How hard was it just to give your name and badge number. The problem is they think that badge and uniform makes them better than the people they are to protect and serve. It’s like we are beneath them. That’s their mindset.
