That ST driver deserves a massive shout out. In the roll race you can see how ridiculous his shifting is to be able to keep up with a DSG. Anyone who’s raced against a DSG in a manual knows how every gear change can “shoot” the DSG forward. Fair play to the lad!

I was thinking the same think the Golf R may have Jumped the start 🤔 I think the ST would of Took 2 rounds so it might of been a Even Race between the ST-2 & Golf R
Absolute class driving from the Ford, changing gear like a boss. If it had a DSG it would be faster than the Golf. Nice bloke too, no ego, no comment on mr shouty in the Golf. Golf deffo jumped the last two roll faces clearly.
“If it had a DSG” the Ford has a built engine.. if the Golf had also a bottom end upgrade rebuild it would of been a different story DSG or not. The Golf is limited to torque in its tune, big props to the ford though.
Two things I took from this was that the focus was definitely the faster car as once he was in 4th gear he was either pulling back or indeed pulling ahead as third gear appeared to struggle with getting on full as quickly. And secondly the golf r driver was a little happy on the roll races and definitely left early. Either way great battle guys
Sams focus is amazing. I think a lot of us can drop our cars off to a tuner then run quarter miles in a DSG consistently. But not many of us could build a 4x4 focus like he did and run great times in a manual. I'll have the focus, lots more drama and fun in that thing 😎👍

Exactly. 2 years ago, I sold my manual evo and replaced it with mk7 golf. Sold it again after 6 weeks. While I can't deny how quick it is, it's soooo boring to drive I found my self dosing off sometimes.

Got to say Sam has that gear change down to a point!! Brilliant video and for me even as a VW fan I’d say the Focus really did put up a great fight and I think that car has more to give.It will be back and faster again.

Or another way to look at it - the ST was consciously handicapped. The Golf represents the most common themed gearbox sold today (Autos). Not the Golf’s fault the engineers spent a crapload of money on their DCT transmission to make it a killer.
Yes but its comparing the cars not the drivers, its a tribute to the fantastic DSG that they put in modern VWs audis ect. Driver wise, if they were both manual the focus guy would win easily, golf boy was pretty useless even in a DSG on some of those changes, he should have let the car do it
I'd still take the ST. Sam: Computer rapid shifts in a totally home built variable he's built by himself. Rejected Fast and Furious character: I bought an already fast awd car, spent some more money on it and matted it and let the car do all the work.
Sold my S3 .. DSG is nice however it’s hardly engaging so does take it away, only good point was the paddles in manual mode felt better (more like riding the bike going up and down the gears)👍 but moved back to manual
@@mattg9364 Torque is the answer, the HP dosnt change but now he have only a Peak and with a build engine he have the HP from ~5k to 6,5k rpm and that makes a Car fast.
That ST is crazy!!! You can’t beat the involvement of the manual shifting, so much more rewarding that just stamping your right foot and flicking a paddle!! Props to the ST driver 🤙🏻
Sams ST is ridiculous! Amazing car and amazing bloke! Honestly! Abit of an unfair rolling race in the 2nd and 3rd! Clear as day the VW getting a head start! Nonetheless golf R’s are serious and rapid but would take the st all day long!! Great build!!!

@@boabm6522 The 1.8 is the only diesel made by Ford themselves, the 1.6 I used to have was a collaboration deal with PSA, which is why the reliability wasn't stellar. Those Lynx 1.8s will run and run forever, pretty strong blocks for fettling too, probably get 200hp out of her if you really wanted, why you'd do that with an ST at home is another question lmao. The Volvo 5-pot is a godsend, broke my heart to see her go, but I've bought an old man car now so I can't talk anymore
everytime the st clutches, the golf R moves forward a bit, i guess one cant outshift a DSG even if you're flat shifting, but atleast the ST won the race on the rolling race, i think the 3rd and 4th roll race, the rolling launch worked against the ST, the way the first launch happened was acutally better, Sammy is one heck of a driver !!! if the ST had a Sequential box, he woulda dusted the Golf R for sure

Huge fan of Sam and his crazy Focus ST... takes alot more skill to drive that manual!! Also the Golf cheated in the last two Roll-races, bc he got himself a headstart ^^
Sam great gear shifts, great build and I think you need to invest in some lightweight wheels like some OZ Ultraleggeras or something... But the Golf shows how terrible sounding and boring DSG is .... but fast tho!
That was a really great match up these two. Really caught my attention throughout. Was on the edge of my seat! I am a Golf R owner but I have to give it to the ST. That thing sounds amazing with every shift! Sick car and a humble owner. Great content Jamie.
The focus driver is what I call a real Driver any1 can hold there foot flat down that's what my 12yr nephew does on a weekend but to be able to shift like that and keep pace with dsg you deserve respect👌🏻
That's been one of the best battles yet. Both rapid cars, and really good launches compared to the STI / Evo battles. DSG is deffenetily faster, but i still prefer driving manual.

Engaging and raw would have the home built ST all day long. So much more manly for me if you gonna have a toy the st would be a lot of fun. Sound the noise pops and bangs it’s pretty much a road going WRC car.

The VW gearbox is the difference here. Every manual gear change in the Ford dropped the car back. Goes to show how well a modern auto box is. If the Ford got a sorted auto/dsg box it would be a complete set up. 👍

The st looks like an absolute blast, having driven a golf r before I found it very boring, extremely consistent and felt very safe, all the time but that's what made it a boring car to drive
Anyone can get a Golf R re-mapped, but not everyone can build a 4x4 focus of that calibre in their shed, massive Kudos for that, close with very capable cars, came down to manual Vs DSG in the end of me though.
I can't take automatic drivers serious. I mean they feel like racecar drivers or so but you manage to put your foot down and and keep the steering wheel in a straight line...so much talent...every idiot could do the same like the Golf driver.
The focus takes the moral victory here fpr each race, in my opinion, the golf drives itself and despite how fast it is, its not engaging and is just a play station with a go pedal, sam has built a proper car there
Having owned both a modified focus st and mk7 golf r I would say that even though the golf r is quick for what that focus st is I would own that car any day over the golf r.
I raced a golf identical power to this one a couple years back in Mexico on my super naked road bike. They are seriously quickly - especially to about 80ish which was near identical to my bike
If that focus had flat foot shift I reckon these 2 would be even all the way on the 1/4 drag. The seamlessness of the dsg shift is the only variable separating things on that race but the roll race was fucked by the focus messing up the rolling launch timing. Both weight and power exactly the same and I’d imagine torque figures are nearly identical. But this goes to show what everyone knows golf R stage 2 are literal cheap supercar killers.

2.89 in a Golf R👏. An absolute beast at stage 3. It would smoke so many 'better' and far more expensive cars. That said as a Ford fan boy you've gotta praise the ST.

Big time, u need around an extra 50/60hp at the wheels to keep up with a DSG from a dig I found, And that’s nailing the shifts

Or another way to look at it - the ST was consciously handicapped. The Golf represents the most common themed gearbox sold today (Autos). Not the Golf’s fault the engineers spent a crapload of money on their DCT transmission to make it a killer.

Sold my S3 .. DSG is nice however it’s hardly engaging so does take it away, only good point was the paddles in manual mode felt better (more like riding the bike going up and down the gears)👍 but moved back to manual

Honestly, this shows how much DSG takes out of a drag race in terms of skill. However, what a great invention. That ST driver is such a good dude.
Throw a sequential in the ST or one of those shifters that mimick a sequential but still keep the original trans and it will be a different story .

@@mattg9364 Torque is the answer, the HP dosnt change but now he have only a Peak and with a build engine he have the HP from ~5k to 6,5k rpm and that makes a Car fast.

100% accurate. Had 2 Focuses myself, 1.6 TDCi and a mk 2.5 ST-2, amazing little cars (had nearly as much fun in the diesel as I did the ST)

@@boabm6522 The 1.8 is the only diesel made by Ford themselves, the 1.6 I used to have was a collaboration deal with PSA, which is why the reliability wasn't stellar. Those Lynx 1.8s will run and run forever, pretty strong blocks for fettling too, probably get 200hp out of her if you really wanted, why you'd do that with an ST at home is another question lmao. The Volvo 5-pot is a godsend, broke my heart to see her go, but I've bought an old man car now so I can't talk anymore

everytime the st clutches, the golf R moves forward a bit, i guess one cant outshift a DSG even if you're flat shifting, but atleast the ST won the race on the rolling race, i think the 3rd and 4th roll race, the rolling launch worked against the ST, the way the first launch happened was acutally better, Sammy is one heck of a driver !!! if the ST had a Sequential box, he woulda dusted the Golf R for sure
You just can't mess with DSG, I already knew the outcome of this before watching. Good effort tho ST👍🏾. Complete waste of time pitting manuals against DSG.

Sam great gear shifts, great build and I think you need to invest in some lightweight wheels like some OZ Ultraleggeras or something... But the Golf shows how terrible sounding and boring DSG is .... but fast tho!
That was a really great match up these two. Really caught my attention throughout. Was on the edge of my seat! I am a Golf R owner but I have to give it to the ST. That thing sounds amazing with every shift! Sick car and a humble owner. Great content Jamie.
The focus driver is what I call a real Driver any1 can hold there foot flat down that's what my 12yr nephew does on a weekend but to be able to shift like that and keep pace with dsg you deserve respect👌🏻

That's been one of the best battles yet. Both rapid cars, and really good launches compared to the STI / Evo battles. DSG is deffenetily faster, but i still prefer driving manual.

I have the mk2 st2 currently sat at 350bhp and it’s amazing.. the golf sounds like it’s dying on the limited.. you can’t beat the look or sound of the 5 pot st...

My stage 2 golf r runs good times and would have been a better match up against the focus.
Engaging and raw would have the home built ST all day long. So much more manly for me if you gonna have a toy the st would be a lot of fun. Sound the noise pops and bangs it’s pretty much a road going WRC car.

The VW gearbox is the difference here. Every manual gear change in the Ford dropped the car back. Goes to show how well a modern auto box is. If the Ford got a sorted auto/dsg box it would be a complete set up. 👍

Man like Sam needs some respect, he can drive that focus. No denying that R is fast but that ST is wag1 mode.
The st looks like an absolute blast, having driven a golf r before I found it very boring, extremely consistent and felt very safe, all the time but that's what made it a boring car to drive
Predicability = consistency 🔨, this means you can drive the car faster
Anyone can get a Golf R re-mapped, but not everyone can build a 4x4 focus of that calibre in their shed, massive Kudos for that, close with very capable cars, came down to manual Vs DSG in the end of me though.
I can't take automatic drivers serious. I mean they feel like racecar drivers or so but you manage to put your foot down and and keep the steering wheel in a straight line...so much talent...every idiot could do the same like the Golf driver.
The focus takes the moral victory here fpr each race, in my opinion, the golf drives itself and despite how fast it is, its not engaging and is just a play station with a go pedal, sam has built a proper car there

Having owned both a modified focus st and mk7 golf r I would say that even though the golf r is quick for what that focus st is I would own that car any day over the golf r.
I raced a golf identical power to this one a couple years back in Mexico on my super naked road bike. They are seriously quickly - especially to about 80ish which was near identical to my bike
As much of a VAG fan I am I would rather drive the Focus, DSG means you just cant drive, rather drive a manual Lada stock from the 80's than a DSG.
Working for the company that tuned and supplied a lot of the parts on the Golf R for the previous owner, it’s awesome to see it on here 👌🏼
If that focus had flat foot shift I reckon these 2 would be even all the way on the 1/4 drag. The seamlessness of the dsg shift is the only variable separating things on that race but the roll race was fucked by the focus messing up the rolling launch timing. Both weight and power exactly the same and I’d imagine torque figures are nearly identical. But this goes to show what everyone knows golf R stage 2 are literal cheap supercar killers.

2.89 in a Golf R👏. An absolute beast at stage 3. It would smoke so many 'better' and far more expensive cars. That said as a Ford fan boy you've gotta praise the ST.
We have to give a huge respect to the ST because manual and that car is a fliping BEAST. Both cars are insane and I loved this video but the ST needs more respect ✊🏾
