- Artist Lori Ehlke will show you how to do a watercolor heart painting step by step. Learn about negative painting and how to use wax paper to get a neat texture!
Supplies:
140 lb watercolor paper (mine is 9x12)
Wax paper
Pencil
Watercolor paint (I used Shinhan Professional Watercolors)
When using the wax paper, make sure that your painting is nice and wet. Otherwise you won't get that nice textured look.

However, this lesson was so calm and relaxed, and you made it look so easy! I will try again to see if I can finally get it. Thank you for your help. God bless you and all those you love. Awesome and cool👌
Thanks
Love this technique! Can you please list the supplies you use in the description and talk more about how much water you add to your paint? Thanks for sharing!
I added the supplies! Thanks for the suggestion.
fabulous! I have just started experimenting with layering negative space objects and tried monochrome layers. It became obvious quickly that texturing would make it much more interesting. It was also my experiment to practice values. Still new to it but all good lessons. Suffice to say, love the wax paper texturing. Cheers!
WOW !
Beautiful!! Can't wait to try it. Thank you!
Of course. Have fun!
Awesome and fun idea to get a super amazing texture. I have heard of people use saran wrap ( plastic wrap) but never wax paper. Thanks for sharing with us have a great day
Yes, plastic wrap works great too.

So cool ❤
Thanks! It's a fun one.
@@EhlkeArt I tried it but my wax paper wasn’t cooperating. I got a small section ok. Will try again. TFS 🥰
@@JoanneOwens1943 make sure the paint is wet so the wax paper sticks. Some of my students wait too long or don’t use enough water so there’s nothing to stick to.
I did this technique years ago with leaf shapes. I haven't done it since then, so this is a good refresher video for me.
Yes, I have a leaf one too. It's such a fun technique. Thanks for watching!
Beautiful, and I'd love to have a go!
Let me know how it goes!
This was a great tutorial, thank you. I struggle with negative painting, this may help.

It is a fun technique to try with any shape!
Beautiful painting! You make the technique look so easy (and I know that’s because you have a gift). I love the colors you used. ❤
Thanks. It's fun to do hearts in something other than pink and red.
You make this look easy…. Idk if I have the patience for it. It’s absolutely amazing and beautiful.
It's kind of nice to work on two projects at once for this one. There is definitely some wait time.
This is so beautiful. Thank you for sharing. I will try and use this in my craft. from New Zealand.

Beautiful!
Thank you!
So relaxing and soothing. Great technique!
Glad you enjoyed it.

I’m farrrr beyond middle school and just learning my way through acrylic abstract painting. You’re description and demonstration of what and how to handle ‘negative painting’ was WONDERFUL! Paint is not my first artistic medium and I have no formal training but you taught this old dog a couple of lovely new tricks. Thank you!
Awesome! So glad it is helpful.
💜
This is so beautiful. You made me feel like I could do this. I loved this. I couldn’t believe how perfectly and effortlessly you outlined those hearts.
Thanks. It is such a fun technique! Try it out and let me know how it goes!
Beautiful art piece, amazing how you used wax paper. Make a wonderful Valentine gift if done in shades of pink.
Yes, I like how it is so flexible on the colors, shapes, and patterns you can use.
Very cool technique! Thanks for the demo!
My pleasure!
That is awsome, thank you for the tip...
You bet!
I love it. I get together with a group of ladies at the Cancer Center once a month to do watercolor painting etc. This is definately on the top of the list to try. Thanks so much.

So cool. I'm going to have to try this.

What a beautiful easy way to paint I. New to watercolor and I am going to try this Most definitely thank you for showing us your beautiful skills ❤️ God bless you and keep you 🙏 ❤️
So glad you like it! Check out my leaf one too if you are in a fall mood.
Wow... Superb... Lovely color combination 👍👍👍👏👏👏
Yes! A fun one that isn't normally used for hearts.
I love this 😀 I'm still practicing and learning negative painting. Beautiful results
It's such a cool technique. I'll have to think of some other ways to practice it too.
Lindísimos corazones... muchas gracias..
de nada... es divertido con hojas también para otoño
Very fun!! Thank you
Glad you enjoyed it!
I love the negative painting and layering and the crinkly look that came from thee waxed paper. Some of that seemed to disappear when you went back to delineate your hearts. Would putting waxed paper on those new places you paint as you work around the hearts allow for delineation as well as maintaining the special crinkle effect?
Yes. You can do it more than once for sure!
So niceeeee
Thanks 😊
Beautiful! Thank you!
Glad you like it!
Amazing effect! I am working on the NeuroGraphic watercolor project. Still curving angles and this video came on next . Very difficult not putting down first one start this one lol I subscribed and save for later 😀
I work on multiple paintings at once all of the time! While one is drying, work on the next!
I love this negative painting you did,it's beautiful, thank you for sharing! I wonder if you wouldn't mind telling us what watercolor paper you used?
I believe I used canison watercolor paper 140lb
@@EhlkeArt Thank you!
@@emicab1222 You bet!
Thank you!! What is the name of the pro-watercolors? Shen-Fenn? Also, when you said "pencil", what type, how sharp, etc. Love the negative painting and all the thought you put into your projects. Again, a grateful Momma, Terri

Any pencil. I usually just use a regular #2.
I've only done this with seran wrap never wax paper this is interesting but you keep saying tissue paper which is a completely different thing so is it wax paper? Turned out beautifully.
Sorry for the confusion! Wax paper. Plastic wrap works too!
@@EhlkeArt thank you, I find the wax paper made a different pattern than the plastic wrap that I've been using, it's quite interesting, bigger shapes and less wrinkly 😂
Planning to use this for V-Day this week! What is the estimated time for drying after that first layer?
I’d give it 30 mins. Maybe work on other stuff at the same time.
Could you use plastic wrap and crinkle it up to get similar effect to the wax paper?
You bet! I did another heart one recently with plastic wrap.
I like this technique, How can you see your pencil lines ?
I usually can see them just fine. It doesn't show up as well on the video. If you're worried about lines showing, you can draw them with watercolor pencils which will just blend in eventually.
I'm still trying to wrap my head around negative painting-- painting what's behind something else and how that needs to be managed.
It takes a little bit of thought! Practice helps for sure....simple shapes too.
Can you use Parchment Paper??
