The Wisdom of Odin is a vlog of my journey through Norse Paganism, a way to assist others along their journey, and a place to promote a positive image for all of paganism.
While I personally declare myself as a Norse Pagan, I speak on topics that also involve aspects of Asatru, Heathenry, and other pagan identities such as Slavic/Celtic/Germanic paganism.
All gatherings are set up and managed by The Fellowship of Northern Traditions, a non-proft religious organization. This channel/community is inclusive to all but is also non-political.

I’m not a gamer…but I do feel that anything that helps to increase awareness or interest in the old gods is a good thing. It’s up to the individual to do the research. One thing I love about this channel is how many times Jacob advises us to research and study on our own, not to just take his word for it.
So I have a confession. God of war was actually what got me into Norse paganism, I was a pagan anyway but never had much interest in Norse other than the MCU .
Then I watched a gamer play god of war and I feel in love with the characters and mythology and not long after that Loki and freya ended up calling me to work with them
I have a feeling that they might have changed Eitri's name to Sindri, because they thought it sounded to close to Atreus and that people might get the characters confused.
I loved the portrayal of Tyr. Took my off guard at first but didn't take me long to be like "actually I kinda love it???"
After this video got me thinking about the next chapter of God Of War. I think it would crazy to see Kratos or Atreus appearing in the Slavic mythology or Egyptian.
Absolutely enjoyed this video, even more so given I'm an avid gamer myself and the ranking of each character was spot on. Hopefully you'll play and review the sequel ragnarok.
Sadly I don't have a playstation anymore (I snagged a series X so I am an xbox guy now lol) I might try to borrow a friends just to play this though
they tried to explain the Loki thing in GoW 2018. When Mimir talks to Jormungandr he says something like "curious. the big guy says he knows you... or will know you?"
something similar was said when it came to Jormungandr fighting Thor at Ragnarok. they might be alluding to time travel shenanigans or the cyclical nature of things in norse mythology
Well it’s because it’s a twisted version. Loki is more of a guardian to Jormangandur and Fenrir, not an actual birth parent, also, Jormangandur is already there because it’s said (and shown in Ragnarok) that Thor hit him so hard he went back in time
In God of War they do address the Atreus/Loki situation, as Jormungandr says something to Mimir and he clarifies that Jormungandr said that "The child looked familiar" and Freya mentions to Kratos that on the day of Ragnarok Jormungandr gets thrust back in time. As for Hel and Fenrir there's no real mention of them in the game, not sure if they will be mentioned in the next one but for now we don't know how those two fit into the universe yet.
Fenrir is mentioned in both games he’s Astraea pet wolf
After playing the game I feel Thor should be S tier because like you said, Thor is the god of brute strength and thunder, and he isn't some cut blonde dude from Australia. I feel they did a great job depicting that. Mjölnir is awesome too.
Hey wouldn't be so fat though. He'd be in one of the best shapes of all the Gods
Let me broaden your very small horizons. See in this world we have certain types of people that have so much muscle mass that they give off the illusion of being some fat bag of pudding, but they’re actually solid. A good example would be sumo wrestles who are built like tanks and the worlds strongest men who are also built tanks. In Norse mythology Thor can outdrink anybody and he’s said to drink mead by the barrel. He can also eat two whole goats for one meal so it makes sense that he would have a gut. Try to be educated on a topic if you want to try to make a point next time.
@@LuminaryMohg445 "have so much muscle mass that they give off the illusion of being some fat bag of pudding, but they’re actually solid. A good example would be sumo wrestles who are built like tanks and the worlds strongest men who are also built tanks."
No. Sumo Wrestlers are strong, but they also have an incredibly high fat ratio and have significant health problems because of it
"In Norse mythology Thor can outdrink anybody and he’s said to drink mead by the barrel. He can also eat two whole goats for one meal so it makes sense that he would have a gut."
He's an Aesir, normal rules on how bodies work don't exactly apply to him
In regards to Balder, take into consideration his profession. There would have been a significant amount of grappling. Take a look at all of your Olympic level champions for Greco-Roman and freestyle wrestlers. Take note of the lighter weights up to 72 kilos. These individuals have a very lean BMI. You're basic male individual is engaging to heavy hand to hand combat. Grappling in this age would have been a very heavy significant addition to infantry tactics. Grappling and wrestling date back to an official ranking structure based in the ancient Olympics based in Athens in the early 8 hundreds BC. Essentially what I am trying to say is that wrestling at its core is the oldest form of martial arts in the entire world wrestling is as old as time itself.
Skyrim was my start into Norse mythology
I'm a huge God of War fan, the 2018 game really helped me through a hard time and I really connected and related with Kratos and Atreus, and I've recently became a Norse Pagan (I've felt drawn to it my whole life, as young as 6 years old, it's only now that I fully committed to it, technically speaking, the 2018 game and Ragnarok is what helped me take the leap into Norse Paganism lol) and so I was pretty excited to see this video! It'd be cool to see an updated list since Ragnarok has been out for a while now! I agree with you on most of these, I'd be tempted to put Freya higher but that's probably because I love her character, especially after Raganrok (!!SPOILERS!! KINDA!!) the pain she went through and struggled to break free from throughout the game is something I've experienced so I just really connected to her through that so that might be clouding my judgement a little lol. I do disagree with you about Atreus/Loki though. I've had a lot of connections with Loki throughout my life, and I felt like it made a lot of sense that he was Loki, especially after the Ragnarok, where it gave a pretty good God of War-y in universe explanations about his children that I don't mind. I would've put him at a B or even a A. But that's just my opinion :)
I find it interesting how Jackson said tattoos were never a norse pagan phenomenon and is attributed to the modern era
Norse Paganism is still evolving today, so even if its not historical, it can still be part of the culture now 👍
Now that the game is out, what are your opinions on Thor's character arc in the game compared to his stories?
I'm not a usual audience member of this channel but I thought I'd pop in to say this:
Any kind of representation of the Gods in a series that actively promotes the view that They are not worthy of worship is already polluted beyond repair. Full stop. End of story. We have a million things out there saying the Gods are evil tyrants. How about we support the creation of projects that show Them the way They ought to be treated? Let's stop selling our Gods and our traditions short because "Hey! All publicity is good publicity! :D". No community worth a damn would ever give as much leeway as the Pagan community does at times to people that are hostile to the Gods and it's one of our worst qualities.
Just asking if you know any pagan gatherings in UK
All these videos are interesting. I think what went over everybody's head is the fact that it's about a fictional Greek God in a norse world, did anybody expect accuracy over narration? Absolutely not.
I think coryxkenshin said it best when he said Odin sounds more like a used care salesman than a god
eitri and sindri are the same and both names are sometimes used, but also they are sometimes different persons, same for freya/frigg right?
Being a gamer I can appreciate the aesthetics of these games but I just can't bring myself to play something where I kill one of the gods, or even just a fictionalized depiction. That being said World of Warcraft Classic Wotlk is out now and I am thrilled to quest and raid to help free and aid their versions of the gods.
You clearly haven't followed any GoW news very closely if you think Thor will be a surface-level character.😂
He might be avoiding spoilers.
I don't think he played Ragnarok prior to making this video. He speculated about killing Freyja and didn't mention other characters like Odin and the other Aesir gods. He also used the younger version of Atreus/Loki and not the older version
Hey Jacob, i've always been really curious about how modern Pagans are planning to reach Valhalla? Can you share your Knowledge with me?
he actually has a video on this ruclips.net/video/p2K8HmnWhfA/видео.html
I have made several videos on this. The most poignant is called "The Valhalla Dilemma"
You should do some
More live streams my man lol
My name is Brock. Fuck yeah. Good job mom and dad.
Update the tierlist Jacob
I want parte 2
elves are ethereal beings. shining and beautiful.
The character of Baldur in the game is great, is it accurate to him in mythology, no
I don't like fatbody Thor. The Red hair is accurate, the tattoos are fine, but the fat just isn't necessary and doesn't make sense.
Yes there are powerlifters who are fat. If you look at Halfthor Bjornson however, huge Nordic powerlifter, the man has abs when he wants. When he was training for power + fighting he was cut. Thor is not a God of just eating and lifting. He fights, he travels, in many of the myths by foot, which means he doesn't skip out on cardio.
The Roman and Greek historians depicted Germanic people as having large frames. Tacitus mentioned "beast like" bodies for some tribes and I think Eunapius said the Goths were large and heavy and pinched at the waist. If our ancestors were fat considering how hostile the Romans and Greeks were generally towards Germanic people, they would've mocked us for it.
There are also depictions of Goths and other Germanic tribes like The Ludovisi Battle sarcophagus created by Romans in the 3rd century where the Goths are buff "large frames" but not fat.
If you look at boxing, kick boxing, wrestling, mma, you won't see a lot of heavyweights that look like this because it's not optimal. (There are exceptions)
You also won't see a lot of people this fat in the special forces of any military. (There are exceptions)
I'm a big guy (naturally husky) who lifts and fights and can go a month eating only rice and still walk around easily over 220lbs. When healthy I walk around with 18-20% bodyfat, but this Thor is like 35% - 45% fat.
I mean look at his sons in comparison? They're huge but they're not flabby. I think the part where they dropped the ball was the emphasis on flabbiness and underdeveloped muscle tone.
In my long opinion its a bit goofy to depict Thor this way.
Just wanna throw something out.loki/Atreus could have been the father of hel and February and jorm because of the fact that both jorm was sent back in time due to his fight with Thor so he was sent back before his own birth
I feel I should have had some imput in this video.
I'm curious to see your reaction to their depiction of Odin 🤔
I honestly really don't like it 😂 I watched the first 2 hours of gameplay and think Odin is terrible, sounds bad, looks bad, and even his dialogue is just weird and doesn't fit any version of Odin that is represented in the myths
They made him seem like a slimy lawyer.
@@ALKMST nice. That's a great way to put it!
@@TheWisdomOfOdin Haha I had a feeling you wouldn't like him. That was like the first thing I thought when I saw him. "Oh no, Jacobs going to be let down"
Too scrawny and scared.
Tho one thing I did sorta think was cool is that his ravens were tattoos. Not mythologically accurate but pretty neat idea.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who was thoroughly bothered by their depiction of Baldr.
I am not fond of the portrayal of the All-Father and the All-mother. They try to make Odin a lot like Zeus and he just wasn't. Also the way they lump Frigg and Freya together is not a good look either. There is some stipulation in our community that they are the same goddess or were at one point but they have very different functions and attributes. As someone that follows Frigg, I did not appreciate that.
Well the story in God if war is that Jörmungandr was hit so hard by mjolnir he traveled back in time. I don't personally like the rushed answer but it is what it is🤷🏽♂️
I intend to play the Norse GOW games, having played the Greek GOW games myself.
I definitely agree about how they didn't portray Baldur properly. Baldur is a loving god after all. For Thor, could've been better. Jormungandr looks fitting.
Also got to say that, I know this may be showing what GOW Ragnarok depicts, is that I could put their portrayal of Odin in F. That's really not like how Odin is at all.
It's very foolish of u to underestimate Santa monica's ability to tell a good story and make good characters. Thor was a very complex character, I think u def need to play it
Sad that Vê and Vili the brothers of Odin + Forseti,Nanna,Sigyn,Iduna,Bragi,Hoder,Uller,Hermod,Vali,Meili and Vidar Along with Fulla,Var,Ran,Hela,Lorride,Simara,Bil,Saga,Hlin and Gefjunn They didn't appear in this game mainly in asgard and Along with others Midgardian humans l would love to see their relationship with Atreus especially after the death of Baldur,Magni and Modi Too bad it didn't happen and didn't have
This game should be a part 1 and part 2 so having a trilogy or more games in Norse Mythology but no.. they wanted to make only 2 games in this mythology it's really a pity There were so many things missing creatures others Gods/Demi Gods Like Siegfried/Sigurd and Beowulf Midgard Warriors as they are versions of Samson and Hercules in Norse Mythology including more Valkyries since there are many of them in total there are 28 Valkyries and only 13 were used And the return of Baldur,Magni and Modi + Freya's priestesses are: Vjofn,Sjofn,Lofn, Syn and Snotra
Really they destroyed the franchise and it would be cool if we had the Nordic trilogy But no.. they just do it in two games and that's Disappointment 🥺😔 like and Bye!
The games have always been technically at the highest level since part 1, but story-wise the developers make it too easy for themselves, the gods become evil for outrageous reasons. Installing shades of grey, daring something new, not really. But I'm curious, the developers once said that Kratos could possibly meet biblical figures. But that was before the PC era. That Yahweh is killed, and as a mass murderer with an inferiority complex he offers himself to become a boss. I doubt.
I think it’s more possible now than ever for him to meet Christian mythology figures. People are more PC now, but not really when it comes to Christians.
I really like the depictiom of Thor, and I agree- I did not love the approach they took with Freya.
This is why I don't play these games I don't like how they take the gods and do whatever they want with them. I personally do not believe the gods should be used in a game, but hey that's just me.
Sorry lol I got caught up in the mood every since I seen the Thor image release I've been hardcore against it while I know God of war twists mythos but I don't think the god who protects both the gods and mankind is a fat shit, I do however like the move away from marvel but I think this is a rather disgraceful depiction of both Thor and Baldur
i think they did Odin dirty it should have been surtr as the main villain.
As far as depictions go I generally agree with this tier list. I'm biased and haven't played the game, from what I see of it I like the interpretations of Magni and Modi. Baldr's interpretation is awful and makes me wonder if the whole point of the game isn't to disrespect pagans. I'll probably do an early life check on who made the game. It's either got to be edgy hot topic aethists who think "ah lets give them like tragic drug addict personalities, like me, that's never been done before it will be so cool," or the people who took a billion dollars from Ye.
Ok early life checks out lmao how did I know? Crazy.😂 Yea this series is intentionally disrespectful.
I dont like the way they portray the gods and the way thor dies in the new game but its a good game
So Loki is the good guy and the Allfather the bad guy. I don't like it. But this is just a game with virtual characters, so be it.
(Also, I hate the way Odin talk. It feel somehow too modern, like a gangster would talk.)
