If most of Greek mythology is Zeus being unable to keep his pants on, most of Norse mythology is Loki getting himself into a progressively deeper grave.

It's really interesting how Ragnarök happens because of the gods trying to stop it from happening. Like with Baldur's death resulting in Fimbulwinter, and the binding of Fenrir resulting in him killing Odin during Ragnarök.

The story of Balder is actually a description of the changing of the seasons. Because back in ancient times the coming of winter was LITERALLY a life or death situation, something that was not taken lightly as if you were not prepared you may very well starve or freeze to death. So many people did not look forward to winter and in fact dreaded the coming of fall. Balder, representing the happiness of Spring and summer where the days are warm and longer and the nights shorter then starts having nightmares and giving way to the sadness that is fall and winter where the days are shorter the nights longer and the weather colder. Where all living things go into some sort of hibernation and plants wilt and die....all EXCEPT mistletoe, which actually seems to thrive in the winter. They made mistletoe, one of the only plants that seem to get stronger with the coming of winter, the "enemy" of Summer and therefore Balder's weakness.

@@pobbzz897 If you like Norse Mythology there are plenty of books out there that actually give pretty good, logical explanations for the influences for the different stories. And of course reading the pros eda is a MUST. There are some really good translations out there that are free to read on the internet. For years now I've read everything I can get my hands on regarding Vikings and the Norse Mythology, even going so far as to learn Elder Futhark runes. But that last one can be a double edged sword as I find myself pausing movies, tv shows and even video games who use elder futhark in them so I can translate it and know which ones actually took the effort in writing something and who just used it for effect and wrote gobbledygook. Lol.

@@nicholascureton933 There are a LOT of explanations for pretty much ALL the characteristics for the stories and the gods. Another example is Loki, he is always seen as being a trickster, someone to not be trusted and someone who revels in chaos and therefore he IS the embodiment of change. Both change in personal matters as well as the world. Seeing as he was the one who kills balder, he literally is the change of the seasons. Just like many of the stories have some sort of theme to them, all of the gods and goddesses do also.

I never imagined that of all religions that the viking religion had such comedic timing in their stories. This isn't just a religion as a foundation of ethics for a group of people but these are stories with fully fleshed out and dynamic characters with elements of honor, comedy, tragedy, horror, and even a bit of slice of life. Im legit surprised by this. I really thought the vikings would have had 1 dimensional deities but they're really fleshed out.

It would have been good to include more information on Odin’s journey to Mimir’s well. After Odin drank from the well he immediately knew what he had to do. He broke a branch from the tree and stabbed himself with the branch after which he hung himself upside down from the tree with his head partly in the well causing himself to partially drown. The three fold death, wounded, hanging, drowning. After 9 days and 9 nights Odin reached deep into the well and pulled out the runes. The greatest source of magic ever known.
This is how Odin became known as the lord of the hanged and how the runes came to be.

That is a common trait in many mythologies, the greek ones as well. They are portrayals of humans as if they had special powers. The stories are hereby rooted in reality and sometimes don't make a lot of sense and have a lot of plot holes, as to why they are largely not believed today. Christianity is on the other hand almost just a set of rules, the concept of god is so far from human it almost seems plausible to some. That at least is why I think Christianity has prevailed.

Yes! Finally I can listen to the stories of the gods while I'm working. There's not enough time in the day for me to read about about the gods and everything that comes with norse paganism. This alone makes me feel closer, comfortable, and almost empowered by the gods.

I should've been more specific on the type of paganism I follow. It's heathenry, following as close to the old ways as possible, but of course with the twist that works best for me.
These people are not actually followers of the Norse religion, they simply larp in order to seem interesting. Anyone who genuinely believed this stuff wouldn't refer to themselves as a pagan. They simply follow it to stand out from the Christians. By referring to themselves as pagans they unknowingly validate Christianity, much in the same way Satanists do

I’ve always found the stories of the Norse and Greek Mythologies fascinating, and after listening to this I realize how many aspects of the law same stories are referenced within media and our own culture. Just goes to show how long lasting the impact of them has been.
odin tying fenrir is a self fulfilling prophecy. which i think was meant as a lesson. when one seeks to avoid once fate they often find themselves playing right into it. threw odin learning of his demise he did everything in his power to prevent it thus solidifying his fate.
Bruh Odin tying Fenrir, vanishing Hel and throwing to the ocean Jormungandr (help Idk if I wrote that correctly) were all self fulfilling prophecies. Gotta think more abt your actions Odin!

But their religion is based on the restriction of knowledge, and they destroyed much of the early works of philosophers simply because they were Pagan, particularly in the Middle Ages. Only when they found ideas they could use to their own agenda did they adapt it. And even then they 'Christianized' it. Like the theory of Monism. Or Stoicism.

I don't often watch an hour long video, however this was so well done I actually thoroughly enjoyed this. I've been on a journey for spirituality and, since my family comes from Danish Vikings, I figured I should look into Norse mythology. This makes everything so clear and...well just great job

We also discovered that we are (very removed) related to the danish royalty as well (like our common ancestor was 13th century and probably not first in line, not sure who. We did this when I was probably like 6-8ish)

My favorite religion! I am but a bit Irish and mainly Hungarian ancestors... but, I find Norse ways to be personally amazing and leave me in awe. My new gf is Swedish ancestors and I love letting her in on these wonderful stories ❤️
I keep seeing a common theme where Odin sees a problem in the future, and so tries to do what he can to prevent it before hand. The thing here, though, is that his actions “in the now,” end up having this butterfly effect to cause what he was originally trying to avoid! Fenrir is one of my examples (unless I’m reading into it incorrectly - totally possible). The Asgardians try to try the wolf, and he realizes something is afoot when he succeeds in the chains challenge. Guy probably (rightfully) feels slighted, and the whole butterfly effect occurs.

This is called a self fulfilling prophecy, a very common trope in modern literature - no doubt, this story was one of the first of its kind.
I've seen a lot of versions where Hel and Jormungandr's prophecies of Odin are also self fulfilling prophecies, as Oding casting Jormungandr into the ocean was why he grew so big, and by sending Hel to the land of the dead, he made it possible for her to rule them

I am impressed by the quality of the compilation (great work!) and Norse mythology in general, much of it could and should have been preserved in Europe.
I really enjoyed the stories. Watching the TV series “Vikings” now I understand better when they talk about their gods.
Yeah just so you know we don't know 100% how the norse worshipped their gods and according to modern day asatru worshipers the show wayyyy over do it
But ther stories are from the original norse stories so yeah

At this point I'm an atheist but the norse culture is really beautiful and not to mention one of the greatest fighters in human history were vikings, no king wanted to meet vikings in battle, they were not scared of death because dying in battle was the best thing a viking could do to enter Valhalla
Also many things sound like scientific metaphors, like the big bang, and using animals and mystical creatures/races as symbols for scientific reality, or could be substituted in context at least.
But the depth of their stories and back stories brings flawed and realistic personalities and actions of the gods, making them relatable to different aspects of humanity.
I love how after Lokis mare incident he sends Thor in as the bride in the next! Hahaha he was not about to take another one for the team!

They pick only the strongest, most honorable and escort them to Valhalla. So unless you're part of your country's special elite military force and plan on dying in battle.. The nine realms are the nine frequencies of white light. IR, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo,violet, UV
Norse mythology is by far my fave. In my humble opinion it blows away Greek mythology. Much more fascinating and presents the elements of the human experience that are real and not just "happily ever after." The Norse dealt with the cold and harsh winters and dealt with the harshness of life and showed it in their myths.

I just read a book called a witch's heart that tells the story of angraboda, lokis giantess otherwife.. it does a great job of weaving most of these stories together, taking a few liberties. It is what made me look up the real mythology. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys Norse mythology.
I am going to buy this book purely because of this comment.

Great videos. I really like this kind of thing when I'm doing chores around the house. One thing though, you refer to Loki as evil a lot, and I don't think that's accurate. Loki is a trickster. Tricksters are not evil.
For instance, in my culture, our trickster is also our cultural hero. He's the main character. He stole fire for us. Our people believe that laughter brings you closer to the great mystery (not a god, not personified in any way, more like the source).
He plays tricks throughout the traditional stories. Loki might play what we consider to be more mean spirited tricks (and they certainly feature more violence than my culture) but that's just a cultural judgment and it's unfair to say he's evil because he wasn't in the Norse culture. We can't apply our own cultural perspectives to the ancient Norse.
Loki is morally ambiguous. That's the point of tricksters, they play tricks for the fun, and often times they have to fix the problems they create in stories because it usually isn't their intention to bring unending torment. They're just amusing themselves. They're not malicious.
It's the way that Loki is treated that gives him the darker motivations he possesses. He becomes increasingly incensed by the way the other gods treat him, and that jumps a hundred fold as his children and partners are mistreated. But those aren't the attributes of the trickster, nor is it because he is an evil being, that's his character arc.
He is a trickster god, but his story is that of a misfit who gets bullied to the point that he lashes out, hurting the ones who he had tried to win the respect of for so long. Just like how Zeus is the ruler of the Olympian pantheon, but his character arc is turning into various animals to SA mortal women.
Odin himself fulfills the prophecy of his own doom at the hand of Loki's children. It's his own actions of cruelty that trigger the chain of events that result in Ragnarok. Not Loki being evil. Loki is like the origin of the phrase, "If a village refuses to give a child love, he will burn it down just to feel its warmth". I just think it's an important distinction and calling Loki evil is misleading to anyone not familiar with Norse mythology.
I would say the opposite. All considered Loki to be evil already back in the old age.
